Hi Jason:

Can you furnish any more information?

Do we mean that it stops responding from the console, or that all services
such as file and print, email, access to the inet etc all stop?

SBS standard or premium? Premium services installed?

What Anti Virus is installed?

No messages? No errors or related warnings in the event logs? No
spontaneous restarts? Just stops running?

At what stage? What is going on when this happens? Someone working at the
console? Someone RDP to the server?

Any new hardware or software been installed?

What is the free space on the drives/partitions. Should be bare minimum 20%
free space.

Have you run the SBS BPA and fixed what ever it finds?

Make sure the server isn't overheating (check all fans, CPU fan and case
fans). Could also be a bad power supply or other electrical glitch. (I'm
assuming you have no mouse pointer or keyboard control once it "hangs".
i.e., it 'freezes').

The server is attached to a ups power system and yes there is no mouse or
keyboard, the clock at the botton tell me when the system went down

Ahh. Once I read the clock thing, I realized you've posted this multiple
times.

So I'll repeat my question from the other post...

You can *see* the clock on the console? Are you leaving this server open
with a user logged in??

Jason,

If you are using NOD32 (ESET) v 3.0, you may want to check which build
you have. V. 3.0 is known to cause some serious "hanging" and "freezing"
with Windows 2003 (inc SBS). I'm not saying this is the issue, but it
is one avenue to explore.

See these posts for more information:

http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=212989
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=196980
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=198897 (v long, but has
the whole thread)

I had a similar issue with v.3 and rolled back to v2.7 which is flawless.

It is supposed to be fixed in build v.3.657 onwards, but I've not
checked. Still running 2.7 here and will probably move to Trend when the
license runs out.

Make sure you also set up real-time scanning exclusions.. (i.e sysvol
folder etc...).

Its a server and doesn't need to be left logged in for Exchange to work.

Re: SBS2003 Keeps crashing Help!!! by Cliff

Jason:

A hard lock like that (even the clock stopping) would seem to indicate a
hardware issue. James makes a good point though, I've heard of Nod32
causing lock-ups as well...but never that hard. Still worth checking out.

So, in this order:
1) try disabling NOD32 or updating it to the latest version.
2) Check your hardware for problems. Fans not spinning, buildup of dust,
etc.
3) Power related issues. Even if the UPS is good, if the power supply IN
THE SERVER is failing, it'll cause problems.

And on an unrelated note, you do NOT need to leave your server logged in
with an administrator account to work. In fact, leaving it logged in is
very very bad from a security standpoint. All system services (such as
exchange) run with various system accounts and run in the background. The
"console" is exactly that...just a window to adjust how things run...but not
necessary for them to run in the background.
