To the best of my knowledge I've configured the Internet & Email = Configuration wizard correctly and I can send out test emails from = within the network accounts to addresses outside the network, for = example my Hotmail & Yahoo accounts and the mail is received just fine, = but when I send a test email from any of these email accounts (Hotmail = or Yahoo) to a user inside the SBS network, the mail is not arriving and = no message is received to indicate what the problem may be (at least not = yet anyway). Is there anything else that I should configure on the SBS box to allow = external email to come into the network and be delivered to the correct = user? I can send email from one user to another user inside the network = just fine so I know all of the internal email accounts are setup and = working properly, they just don't seem to be able to receive external = email at the moment and I'm not quite sure why. If anyone can offer any suggestions or if something is glaringly obvious = that I may have missed, I really would be very grateful of your feedback = - I only have a few small issues that I'm trying to resolve and = everything else is working great.     - Mail rejected by Windows Live Hotmail Folks: My customer is reporting that the following error message has recently started popping up (within the last week). Prior to this, all the messages were being sent and received by the recepient correctly. What can I do about this. I searched Google without any helpful results. It is important that this recepient be able to receive our emails. We are using SBS 2003 R2 with all the latest service packs and Exchange 2003. Please help...     - DFS replication between Windows Sever 2003 R2 & SBS Hello, We have a Windows Sever 2003 R2 Standard Edition SP2(hostname is Mars) running on Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q6600 @2.4GHz and a Windows Sever 2003 for Small Business Server SP2(hostname is Doublehelix) running on Dual Core AMD Opteron Processor 270 @ 2.01GHz. They are on the same sub-network but in different locations and domains(lakescom.net & blcomfor.local). Each of them is a domain computer of the other one. Doublehelix has most of our important data, applications and MSSQL services only. A fault tolerance/disaster recovery solution is necessary for us. If Doublehelix goes down, users can still access data and run programs on Mars. First, we created DFS roots and linked them to share folders on both servers, and then tried DFS replication group for data collection on Mars but failed. The error said â??Doublehelix.lakescom.net: the service control manager cannot be opened. Access is deniedâ??. We are not sure if the reason is, that not all new functionality (snap in's) are showing after doublehelix upgraded to SBS R2, specifically the DFS management console. Could you please tell me what would cause this problem? In our case, is the DFS replication possible and enough for us? If so, how can we implement it? Does one domain have to be removed? Do we need to upgrade one or both servers? If so, which edition (2003 Enterprise/2008)? Is Severs-Cluster or High-Availability system applicable and necessary? Any other solution available?     - Problem after removed "domain users" from "local administrator"s g Hello all, We are running SBS 2003 SP1 Premium with approx 14 workstations running Windows XP Pro SP2. We finally decided to remove the "domain users" group from the "local administrators" group on the workstations and since doing that we have a strange problem happening. The users can log on the network successfully but then they can not start any programs - as soon as I reverse this setting everything is fine again. This does not make sense to me - has anyone come across this before? We want this setting to tighten up on security...so users can no longer install applications, etc. If anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this that would be great!! Thanks so much in advance!     - Server/Drive Speed I have taken on a client who had a Dell Precision Workstation (2.x GHz P4 with 1 GB RAM) converted to a server (SBS 2003). They have 2 IDE hard drives (1 for OS and one for Data). They seem to be having a lot of random problems with email: Exchange and SMTP services stopping or not starting, Queues occasionally not emptying, ... Can hardware speed have effects on such things. I am considering suggesting that we flatten the server and start over, or that they put it back into service as a workstation and buy an new "SERVER" with RAID drives, etc. Any thought would be greatly appreciated. Also they are fairly low budget; do current SATA drives perform adequately to handle all of the tasks necessary for domain control and email.     - proxy setting policy removal I am running a sbs2000 system. We currently have the ISA installed, but are not using it. We have a hardware firewall we are using for security. Once in awhile the desktop machines will get an error because they are trying to use the server as the proxy instead of going directly to the internet.     - Problems Reinstalling Intranet (WSS 2.0 & CompanyWeb) I'm running SBS 2003 SP1. I had installed WSS 3.0, side-by-side install using the docs, and then removed it. I am now having problems with the intranet (WSS 2.0 & CompanyWeb). I followed directions from MS Support (829114) but I cannot reinstall the Intranet component now. I get the following error from the sbs installer... "An error occurred while installing Windows SharePoint Services and creating your intranet site.".     - network connection problems after Windows updates I have a problem with LAN connections after applying updates KB951748, KB951746, and KB948110. I can not connect to the SBS 2003 server or SharePoint Website nor can I ping anything from the SBS box. Has anyone else had any troubles?     - Domain Users cant execute applications on SBServer This is SBS 2003 R2 Premium as Domain Controller, with Server 2003 for Terminal Services. Remote users can log-in to the Terminal Server and execute applications on there, including Outlook and the usually installed applications. However, one group application is installed on the SBServer and when a non-Adminstrator user tries to run this they get the error message: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appopriate permissions to access the item" I've checked the user are members of the Remote Web Workplace group, and that the application they are accessing lives in folders which have Full Control permissions for Everyone.     - Aol and Hotmail marking sbs mail as spam The olny reason I can think of is the mail goes through a Backup MX server before it gets to me and the IP where the mail is sent and the IP of the domain don't match up, but that doesn't seem to be like it should make a difference. Any ideas what can cause this or how to fix it?     - Internet Connection Timeouts & Failures Hi, We are encountering â??Error Code 10060 Connection Timeoutâ?? errors very regularly (5% - 10% of our web requests) ever since we replaced our SBS 2000 (running on old hardware) with SBS 2003 R2 Premium (running on a new). Most pages that donâ??t â??timeoutâ?? load slowly. This happens on the server itself as well as for our users. Weâ??re running ISA 2004 and it appears to be configured correctly (no errors or warnings from the ISA Best Practices Analyzer). Iâ??ve configured the new server to match the old server wherever possible and weâ??re using the default Firewall rules. There were no changes to the network topography or hardware, and weâ??re using the same broadband provider & level of service. All our users are running XP Pro, are using the SBS Firewall client and have the same security privileges. We donâ??t block any sites or restrict any traffic. The Firewall monitor shows â??alertsâ?? that there are â??timeoutsâ?? and sometimes that there is â??no connectivityâ??. I get matching entries in the Application Event log (see details below). Any ideas on how to improve our internet response time would be greatly appreciated.     - Applying SBS SP1 atop of Windows Server 2003 SP2 Hey Guys, Need to ask I ran the best practices analyzer tool on an SBS 2003 SP2 machine. Seems all the patches were applied EXCEPT Windows SBS 2003 SP1, Win2003 SP2 was already applied. I guess there are some updates to the POP connector and a few other SBS only updates in SBS SP1. My question is, will there be any issues applying SBS SP1 if 2003 SP2 has already been applied? Will I have to re-install SP2 after the SBS SP1 update is applied? What about Exchange SP2 should that also be re-applied after the SBS SP1 update? Thanks for any valuable advice, the SBS SP1 and Exchange service packs are not usually detected by windowsupdate.     - User Experience Questionaire I'm carrying out a review of a clients small business server network and as part of that i want to interview a selection of the users to find out what their experiences of the sbs network are. I'm going to ask them things such as: Do you experience any delay accessing files? Can you access the network remotely? If so what is the experience like? Are there any limitations with the current email setup? Do any of you folks carry out these user experience reviews? If so what other information do you look for?     - Installing DFS on a Transitioned SBS 2003 Server. Hi All, Up until recently, we were running Small Business Server 2003 R2. We have now installed the transition pack on this server to now make it a full Windows 2003 Server (R2 I assume) I want to use the R2 version of DFS as we have branch offices that will benefit greatly from this but I cannot install Distributed File System from the Add/Remove Windows Components.     - SBS 2003 licensing I hope this is the correct forum for this question. I have a SBS server in local office with the original 5 user CALs. We have up to 7 users although only 4-5 usually access the server at any one time. We have a remote office that has workstations that connect to the server to run various applications. They are using Terminal server. All workstations are XP Pro. We set up a backup server at the remote office which uses VPN, mounted disk and backup software to backup the server. The backup server worked fine at suppliers and could connect and backup OK when tested. When it was installed at the remote office it originally worked Ok but we are now experiencing connection problems; the VPN fails to connect. The remote workstations often experience problems as well. I sometimes have trouble using Remote Desktop Connection from my home office to the server as well. It has been suggested that the problem is related to licensing. If it is a licensing issue do we need more User CALs or do we need Termnal Server CALs? As per the recommendations by Microsoft, I've configured the internal = domain as: <ServerName>.<DomainName>.local and when a user navigates to = this addresses from within the internal network using their browser, the = page displays just fine, but when a user navigates to = https://www.<DomainName>.com from outside the network over the internet, = they receive an error indicating 'There is a problem with this website's = certificate'. To be honest I would expect this anyway as the default certificate would = be configured for the Internal domain but is there a way to add a second = certificate for www.<DomainName>.com, users can obviously continue to = navigate past this certificate error page but it's more of an annoyance = than a problem and if someone can walk me through the process of adding = a secondary certificate (I've never done anything on the server to-date = with Certificate Authorities etc so this is a little new to me), I would = of course be most grateful.     - Problem sending faxes with a cover page SBS 2003 R2 We are running SBS 2003 recently upgraded from SP1 to R2.     - RWW using Mac? Is it possible to do an RWW session (servername\remote then Connect to Client Computer) from a Mac? I can get to the \remote and select Connect to a Client Computer but it wants to download the ActiveX control to do an RWW session. The only problem is this is a Mac. What options do I have?     - Local Vista Profile Question I have a Vista Business client computer on an SBS 2003 R2 server. The user is complaining about everything being slow (ie takes 45 seconds to come up). When they log in under a different user name on the same computer everything works great. That makes me think it's a profile issue. Normally in Windows XP I just rename the c:\documents and settings\(username) folder to something else. The next time the log in a new profile is created for them and I just have to go to their old profile to grab their IE shortcuts and some desktop icon shortcuts. A new Outlook profile is created and their My Documents are in tact from the server. Simple process.... but when I do the same thing in Vista (although going to c:\users\(username) folder and renaming it, when go to log back in Vista is telling me there was an error with the profile and instead loads up a temporary profile and says no changes will be saved (shortcuts etc).     - Licensing, Activation, Backup, & Re-Installation. Help! I inherited a SOHO network after the SOHO business moved to a new location. They also changed business type and market. I wiped their servers and re-installed OS and software using what I found in cardboard boxes after the move. Some of the items which went into storage during the move never made it to the new office (or were damaged or tampered with). The SBS 2003 software is apparently of questionable authenticity (either that, or Microsoft's Activation system is buggy). I cannot activate the OS. I ordered a new set of CD's and key from Microsoft directly. What we received is SBS 2003 R2 Premium. The existing server won't recognize the key we received from Microsoft. Apparently, I must wipe and reinstall again with the new CD's and new key obtained directly from MS. However, I had already setup the server the way the SOHO owner/manager wants the system to work. I don't want to go through all of that again. What needs to be backed up, what needs to be restored, and what steps need to be taken (in what sequence) to wipe, re-install, activate, and have the system running exactly the way it is now (all the configurations, policies, shares, user accounts, etc.)?     - Running ASP.NET 2 and 1 with SBS I want to run our external website and the SBS CompanyWeb & RWW on the same SBS machine. I've setup the external site to use ASP.NET 3.5 and when I try to navigiate the RWW from an internal client machine I get the following event viewer message: Event Type: Error Event Source: ASP.NET 1.1.4322.0 Event Category: None Event ID: 1062 Date: 7/8/2008 Time: 10:49:34 AM User: N/A Computer: ENERGYACUITYSV1 Description: It is not possible to run two different versions of ASP.NET in the same IIS process. As a result, the DHCP service on the server cannot be installed and then configured by Setup. It is recommended that you use a private IP address for your server's local network adapter, as this is a more secure configuration.     - Paging Size Requested Exceeds limit Allowed I recently ran into an error message iin my event logs that said my system resources were very low. I did some research and it said the size of the paging file was likely set too low. I'm running SBS 2003 with 4 gigs of Ram, when I look at the properties for my paging file, it says the current size is 3701 MB but that it recommends I set it to 4606. The problem is the paging file has a max upper limit of 4096. any Ideas what is going on? I'm running the following SBS 2003 STD - Current on all service packs and updates.     - DHCP Problem Very strange problem for you all. We have a server running SBS 2003 configured for remote access via VPN's. Everything works fine except for the VPN clients get disconnected regularly. By regular I mean the same time every hour. The time they are disconnected coincides with when DHCP service was last started. So if DHCP service was started at 10:05 the VPN users are disconnected every 5 past the hour. I've done a network trace and sure enough every hour there are 4 DHCP Discover packets followed by 4 DHCP offer packets. The client MAC address inside this packet is 00:00:00:00:00:00 and hence no machine is actually assigned the offered IP address. What could be causing the zero mac address request?     - Slow access to network files in SBS Premium 2003 I just upgraded a client from a Server 2000 basically running in Workgroup mode to a SBS 2003 Premium running full Active directory/Domain services. Now some of the users are complaining that it is taking longer to access their files that are stored on the server. They are mainly small files too, mostly Excel and Word files. The server is plenty 'beefy' with 4GB of RAM, Xeon processor, and RAID 5 SCSI drives all on a 100 megabit switched network. Is there anything I can check or tweak to help speed up network access??     - Printers not Publishing I installed a new printer on an SBS 2003 R2 Premium server via the To Do List/Add Printer wizard. Everything worked great. When I had the XP clients log off and log back on (even tried restarting XP client) the printer did not appear in their list of available printers.     - Installation locks up eating memory Hi I posted a few days ago about a problem with SBS2003 fresh install locking up during server tools setup on Internet Explorer 6.0 installtion. I had a reply saying it was probably due to an active internet connection. Since this i have installed a brand new harddrive and pulled the plug on the router while attempting the setup. Again the initial part of the setup is fine, its when it gets to the actual server configuration. Its gets as far as installing server tools, the message says its doing internet explorer 6.0. Ive left it at this point for several hours and it gets no futher. A look in the process list shows the setup process is just eating more and more memory. After a few hours it was up past 1gb of memory. I searched the harddrive for what was growing as i was also loosing harddrive space during this point.     - Migrating SBS 2003 To new hardware - Need Help! Sorry for this, but I really need some advice... I am moving an old SBS 2003 installation to new hardware (with new licenses). I am following the Technet whitepaper "Migrating Windows Small Business Server 2003 to New Hardware". I completed Step 2 of the white paper and was waiting for "Line of Business" application developer to set a date of when they can be on site to move their application before I proceeded to migrate Exchange. In the mean time, the server started rebooting today every hour with event codes 1001, 1012, 1011. The event codes say that I am in violation of EULA since I have two SBS servers in the same domain (following the instructions from Technet as described in the white paper above). It appears that there is a two week limit on having two domain controllers on the same SBS Domain! So... with my customer's application server rebooting every hour (this really isn't funny - Nagware at its worst!), does anyone have a suggestion? - Is there a way to lengthen or reset the timer? Two more weeks would do it. - Can I reverse the steps in the white paper and restart when the vendor is ready? This would be painful as the original process took 4 - 5 hours to get this far (the old hardware is lacking). - Proceeding with the installation cannot occur for a couple of days, which means the Doctor's office server will reboot 20 - 30 times... One of my customers needs several groupings of public address list of various orginization groups that can be set up by a clerk and read by the staff managers.     - Server Management Console Has Blank Pane SBS 2003 SP2 Standard Edition. Server has been the most stable of all the ones I look after. Event logs squeaky clean, etc. Trouble started within a week of installing AVG 8.0 Anti-Virus SBS Edition. Coincidence? Symptom is that there is a blank pane displayed for every node one clicks on in server manager except for some of the Advanced Management nodes. I have set the usual scan exceptions with AVG but it makes not difference. All services are running and the event logs are clean. I have done an IIS reset but no joy.     - DNS Configuration I have one machine running SBS 2003 SP 2. DNS is configured on this machine. Recently we had a website set up for us but hosted outside. I can't access our website from our network as I keep getting error messages that the page could not be displayed. I have no problem accessing the webside from anycomputer outside our network. I pinged domainname.org and got replies from my Server's internal IP address. I then pinged www.domainname.org and got the message that "ping request could not find host www.domainname.org."     - EventID 221 Good evening! Have a client who is terribly under-licensed: SBS2003 Premium. I remoted into their server today to do something and was greeted with the warning. I then looked in the Event Viewer and in the Application Log saw the 221. This Event ID ed for appeared for the first time today (kinda surprised that it took this long....). Question: what happens next (and 'client purchasing sufficient CALs' is not necessarily the answer....)? I know that with 'normal' Windows you can disable the Licensing Server. That service is flaky at best. I have done it at least 75 times in the last two years. No repercussions (but, then, all the clients are properly licensed!). However, I *know* that many things are different with SBS2003. Let's just assume for a moment that the client is not going to take our recommedation (today formally via e-mail; made many times over the last year verbally....) to purchase an additional XX number of User CALs. Will the system let only the first 20 users log on (as they do have 20 User CALs - at least this is what I see in the LICENSING section of Server Management) and deny every subsequent user that trys to log on? I have heard that this will happen but have never seen any documentation. If so, when does this start? Next week? Next month?     - Existing Server 2000 add SBS 2003-same domain or new? I have a simple one machine domain using Windows Server 2000. Exchange is not currently being used (but will be in the sbs 2003). I have just purchased SBS 2003 preloaded from Dell on a new server and I want to add it so it is the "main" machine for the company but would like to have the users have the same logins etc that they have using the existing windows 2000 server. Not sure what to expect when I plug the new Dell into the existing network and walk through any wizards that may appear. I have seen much documentation but still not sure best/easiest way to do this so that the SBS 2003 has all the roles it needs and the original windows 200 server can be either just used as a file server or taken off line without any domain consequences. Or would it just be easier to create a new domain with the new SBS 2003 and reconfigure users. Not sure what happen to their Outlook stuff etc as that is login dependent on the old domain?     - CALs/unable to create mailboxes I've just purchased 10 more user CALs for small business server 2003, specifically two of the per-user 5-CAL type (T74-00002). I had 20 CALS installed previously. Running SBS 2003 Sp2. I'm running into a problem now when I create a new user with an email address using the wizard, and the mailbox is not created. Logging in with outlook and OWA doesn't create the mailbox, in fact I get errors. OWA returns an "http/1.1 503 Service Unavailable" error, and Outlook returned an error that I'm assuming has something to do with the mailbox not existing (don't remember the exact wording.) I've sent test emails as well. I've since rebooted the server, and based on some information on the web had both 'updated' and 'rebuilt' the Recipient Update Service from the exchange manager, but still no mailboxes. I count a total of 20 mailboxes, I seemed to be maxed out even though I should have 30 now. Is it a problem with the CALs, or is there something else I need to do?     - Problem Installing SBS Into Existing AD Domain I am trying to install SBS2003 R2 into an existing AD Domain following this procedure: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884453/en-us I get stuck at transfering the schema master role. When selecting the sbs computer name (step 9.e.h) I get the error message "The following Active Directory error occurred: The Domain Controller could not be set. The parameter is incorrect.". I tried to go to "Active Directory Users and Computers" and connect to the AD server (x.y.com) as well as the sbs (xsbs.y.com) but I still got the same error. Please note that I log into the sbs with the administrator account that is used on the AD server. I could not login with a local account (don't know why). Also note that in "Active Directory Users and computers" the current domain controller is listed as x.y.com (AD server) and bellow I have three entries ("Any...", x.y.com, xsbs.y.com).     - Installed BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server) now SQLServer process is I recently installed BES pro software to integrate my own blackberry with outlook. A few days later I started getting a critical error in my daily performance report that a task was taking up a lot of memory. The task was a SQLSERVER. Looking in taskmgr I have 3 instances of SQLSERVER running, one at 45 megs, one at 50 megs and one at 945 megs. 1. Anyone ever seen BES do this to a server? 2. How do I tell which instance of SQLServer belongs to which process? 3. Help!!! delivery receipts, failed backup alert etc.. from being stopped by it... I
have added the sending address to all locations I think required to clear
but must be missing something...

Huh. I've read this several times and don't understand what the problem is.
Any chance I could get you to rewrite the problem, perhaps a little more
explicitly (avoid using generic nouns like "it, that, thing, doohickey,"
etc.? :)

I haven't run into your issue too much, although the occasional server
status message does go into junk mail occasionally. Perhaps you can key off
a unique keyword in the emails in the custom weight XML file or use the
connection accept IP list?
