    - Changing Server IP Range When I set up a client SBS 2003 I used the IP range of 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.252 Giving the Server a fixed IP address of 192.168.1.2 The router has an IP address of 192.168.1.254 I have DHCP enabled on the server where the clients get their IP address from. Having set up remote access for several users, they cannot connect to the server. This is because their hope ISP router uses the same IP range.     - Proliant ML350 G4 Server SBS 2003 & Server 2003 Console Freezes Hello All; We are running two Proliant ML350 G4 Servers. One server is running MS SBS 2003, the other is running MS Serve 2003 Std. Both are on the latest MS Service Packs. Sys Vol have 4 Gig or greater available on both systems. The data drives have greater than 50% space available. Both servers are runnng ADS and are the primary domain controllers. Both servers have been recently experiencing console freezes/ unresponsive. The servers can be pinged, RDP works, but when issuing Server Restart through RDP, server will not shut down. Have had to hard restart to get console to return. Have checked all Event Logs, etc. and cannot find an indicator as to the cause. This issue has been occuring more frequently after applying the most recent security packs to the servers.     - GPO Delegation "Apply Group Policy" deny for Domain admins does not I'm trying to diagnose a problem with my WSUS/WindowsUpdate GPO. So I go into delegation and tell it to Deny application for Domain Admins and I run gpupdate /force /boot and re-log in. However, all of those settings are still applied? If I disable the policy as a whole and gpupdate /force /boot then most of the settings change back to their default. The exception being that I had previously told the GPO to disallow going to windowsupdate.microsoft.com so that people can't manually patch their systems. However even upon disabling that GPO I cannot go to the WU site. All the other items (such as my automatic update preferences) have reverted back. At any rate, I guess that's a three part question: 1) Why why I deny this policy does it still apply where as Denying my IE7 GPO works as I think it should (ie the settings revert back). 2) Why can't I go to the WU site even with my GPO disabled? I ran RSOP and checked this particular policy and it is set to 'not defined'. 3) Why even after disabling the GPO itself can I not go to the WU site? It tells me a policy is set disabling it.     - GPO Folder Redirect causing Permissions Error Last night I applied a new policy to redirect user folders. An example from the policy report: User Configuration > Windows Settings > Folder Redirection > Application Data Group: DomainAdmin Path: \\FileServer\Admin\%USERNAME%\AppData Grant User exclusive rights...: Enabled Move the contents of App...: Enabled Policy Removal Behavior: Leave Contents This has been mirrored to four other groups, to four other locations, for App Data, Desktop, My Docs, and Start Menu. The share has the permissions: Everyone: Full Control The folders created for Appdata, Desktop, etc have the permissions: Admin: Full Control %USERNAME%: Full Control I still have the default policies enabled and have scanned through them but can't see a reason for there to be a conflict or problem. The problem is, since the change, if you try to run a iexplore shortcut (for example) from the QuickLaunch bar (effectively AppData folder), from the Desktop, or from MyDocs, you receive a permissions error: "C:\Program Files....iexplore.exe" "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item" This also happen regardless of what you try to execute within the above listed folders (shortcut, exe, etc). Shortcuts will run from the start menu however, despite the start menu folder sharing mirrored policy and permissions as the other 3 folders. I'm stumped, anyone know what I've done wrong?     - SBS 2003 to SBS2003 R2, new hardware Hi All, I'm just about to move our SBS2003 Pre SP1 server to new hardware at the same time I'm going to upgrade to SBS 2003 R2. Out current server has very limited space about 1.5GB on the System drive and 2.5GB where exchange data files are installed. I'd prefer not to have to upgrade the SBS to SP1, but exchange is at SP2 already. Not having the same server name shouldn't cause us that much of a problem, we have around 70 users but most use OWA for mail.     - SBS2003 NTbackup overwrite/delete problem I am having a problem backing up my SBS 2003 SP2 server to a Netgear NV+ NAS using NTBackup. I have NTBackup configured to save 3 copies of the .bkf file in the \\readynas\Server Name\Backup Files folder. The backups work fine until I have 3 backup files in the Backup Files folder and the 4th backup file has to overwrite the oldest file. At that time the backup will fail with a Event ID: 5634. Eventually the oldest backup file is deleted, but NTbackup has already aborted by then. A sample failed backup log appears at the bottom of this post. After doing some additional testing, I have confirmed that the my problem with oldest backup deletion by NTbackup is the amount of time required to delete a 82GB backup file from the NAS. Deleting one of these files from my server can take 2-3 minutes or longer. I think that due to this delay, NTbackup is aborting before the oldest backup is deleted. If the backup file size is smaller (42Gb for example), the oldest backup file is successfully deleted and the new backup completes successfully. How can I resolve this problem? Do I need to modify my Small Business Backup Script.bks (file contents below) file somehow? Any suggestions are appreciated.     - Shared calendars with OWA issues Hi, I have problems viewing 1 users shared calendar with OWA. All others appear fine, and if I use Outlook I can view this calendar. I am using outlook to set the share permissions (you have to, can't do it with OWA) I am using this method to view the shared calendar with OWA, log into OWA, and then add /username/calendar to the url. This method seems to work properly for all users except for 1, and of course this is really the only user we need to have her calendar shared. (Murphy's law, and I am not exempt!) When we try this method for this user, we get a "The Page cannot be found" 404 page, that appears to be generated by IIS. I know this is a clue, but can't find the culprit. Further testing shows me that a user using this method that does not have permission to view the calendar gets the login screen and not the error page. We are using sbs2003 standard, and outlook 2003 that comes with it. We would love to make this work with OWA, so I can set this calendar up as a shortcut from bosses desktop.     - Open Relay Issues with SBS 2003 I'm running SBS 2003 Standard with SP2. All of a sudden my server is starting to get blacklisted due to open relay issues. Nothing has changed, however. I have verified the relay restrictions on the Default SMTP Virtual Server and they're the standard settings that are usually on an SBS server following the use of the Internet Connection Wizard. The granted IPs are 127.0.0.1, 192.168.16.2 (255.255.255.0) and my external LAN NIC, which is a valid IP address. The "Allow all computers which successfully..." checkmark is selected as well. I do have a valid reverse DNS entry and MX record on my external DNS record. I am using the standard R&RA firewall settings that comes with SBS Standard. What is wierd is that some of the external open relay tests come back negative and some come back possitive even thought I'm using the same IP/host when running the tests. I've used http://www.abuse.net/relay.html, http://www.spamhelp.org/shopenrelay/ and also followed the Microsoft KB to test for open relay, which comes back negative. It seems that the tests that run multiple open relay checks at the same time are getting a few through, but the ones that run a single test comes back blocked/negative.     - SBS 2003: Some Services Do not Start on Reboot I have an SBS 2003 Professional installed. Everything is working normally. However, when updates are installed which require the server to reboot, either the Information Store will not start or the Firewall Service will not start. I have a dual core Intel Core2Duo 2.0 GHz processor with 4 GB of memory. Unfortunately, up to now, every time I am out of town the server will reboot and I will either loose all connection to it or loose connection to the Exchange server. Any help is appreicated.     - adding sbs2003 to existing domain I am adding a SBS2003 server to an existing network. I have and will follow http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884453 I had an SBS on this network once before (it was at one point, the only AD)... but after another server (Server 2003 - NOT an SBS) was added a problem occurred where users couldn't connect to the network unless the SBS server was up. I had set the Server2003 was AD/GC I need to make sure that users can login and access the other server, even if for some reason the SBS becomes unavailable. DHCP is on the router (I know, I know...) I'll continue to run DNS on both servers. Do I _have_ to disable the GC on the Server2003? Is there anything else I should do? FWIW, the reason is that the primary focus of the SBS is the 40 hour/week back office, whereas the Server2003 supports the 7day/18hour retail side.     - Server Management not working correctly While in server management console, I've got a couple of problems. First the font size for the side bar on the left has turned very small and is almost unreadable. All pages have the small font on the left menu. Also, I cannot use the "add user" or "add client computer" options. When I select these links I simply go back to either the list of users or computers. The SBS 2003 R2 server is up to date with latest service packs and updates. I don't remember installing anything which might cause the problem. Monitoring and Reporting is working fine.     - RWW accessed by W2K machine? Are there any issues I need to be aware of concerning a user accessing their SBS network (via RWW...) from their older W2K computer? I don't know exactly what version of IE they are using, I suspect whatever version was native to W2K.     - Indexing Service now only indexes 30 documents Hello All I previously had indexing service running on SBS2003 Premium nicely indexing the contents of the shared document folders on SBS with a link (via Simon Gibson's ASP search) to the companyweb home page which gave a very convenient way for our staff to search all company documents. When I went to use it the other day, I could not find any(!) documents. Checking the indexing service, it now only lists 30 documents being indexed rather than the several thousand I had previously. If I reindex, I don't get any more. If I start a new index and add the appropriate directory, still no more. I allowed WSUS to upgarde windows desktop search to clients and servers, I don't know if this has messed something up. I don't want to use windows search on clients and server as it slows down all the machines, I want it to work the way it did before. Any tips or pointers? Any more information I can give to narrow down the problem. I have various versions of SQL server installed, I don't know if this could have affected anything. This is not normal. I've been receiving this error since I've installed SP3 on my XP Pro machines. No setting, permission have been changed on the server!?     - Slow SBS Backups Over the past few months my backups for my sbs server 2003 with service pack 2 are taking longer & longer to complete. Going from a couple of hours to over 8 hours, backups are done to an external hard drive connected via usb. The file size is about the same size. Sometimes the backup fails totally. I never updated the server to R2 as till now was working fine, can I restore my server to R2 or do I have to restore it to as was then update to R2, is it a painless upgrade, how do I know if I've completed all the updates prior to updating to R2? I was thinking of doing a restore of the server using one of it's backups onto a hard drive of similar size just in case it all goes pear shaped.     - Exchange emails ending up in Outlook 2007 junk folder I've just setup out new SBS 2003 R2 box and tried sending out some test messages. The problem is they are getting routed to my boss' junk folder on outlook 2007. He's got it set on the default Low: Move the most... with Disable links..., Warn about suspicous domains..., and When sending email, Postmark... checked at the bottom of the options page. Any he hasn't listed our domain on his black list (that would be a weird thing for the owner to do:) So how can I figure out what's happening and make it stop. We really don't want all our email to clients ending up in their junk folders! We do not have a 3rd party certificate yet, I just had SBS create one.     - SBS Exchange over WAN Hi everyone, Our company has about has about 25 workstations including laptops and they are all part of the domain controlled by a Dell PE 1900 with 2 Dual core Xeon 5110 CPU's @ 1.6 GHz and 4GB of RAM running SBS 2003 sp2 Standard. This server is running sharepoint services, WSUS 3 Sp1, BES 4.2, Symantec 10.2, and Yosimite back up for an intergraded RD1000 cartridge backup drive. We have Verizon DSL 7 mbps down and 768 up and I am thinking of getting a bonded T1 service because we use a web based medical billing and database through AdvancedMD.com and the DSL seems to bog out more and more. I have run across a few issues with allocated memory due to sqlserver and the exchange service instance. I had read and applied the command from KB283037) article to allocate less memory to the service instance and have had somewhat better results and uptime. I aslo changed the allocated memory for the sql service. With all that we are having a second office location and these workers will need to access the exchange server over WAN. I know I could configure the outlook clients to access the current SBS server of http but I was wonder if there was an easier solution then that or having to configure them to do it with VPN. There was a option when setting up the exchange server is SBS to retrieve mail from another server. I am trying to figure out what OS to use at this other location and if that is an option to retrieve the mail from here to the server at the other location. Does SBS 2003 support being accessed this way if I was to install SBS 2003 on the server at the new location? Would I need to move the mail boxes to another windows server OS? Thank you so much!     - Companyweb credentials issue Hi, Recently the companyweb page has started asking a couple of users (not all) for there logon credentials. These users are internal and not external where for obvious reasons, they are asked for credentials. They have been working in the past without any logon credentials needed. Now, the credential box comes up and if they press ok or cancel 3 times it allows them access to the site, then, depending on what you are doing the credential box will reappear.     - Can someone explain "Extra Registry Settings" to me? GPMC and RSOP? I've got a few policies, such as the Small Business Client Computer GPO which has "SyncForegroundPolicy" under "Extra Registry Settings". Why does it show here? I can go in and enable (or disable) "Wait for network..." (which is the SyncForeGroundPolicy) and it'll show in my Settings Summary page under both Extra Registry Settings and Administrative Templates/System Logon. Furthermore, in RSOP I have Extra Registry Settings for the IE7 settings I made with the new ADM file. I have a policy called "IE Settings", in which I linked inetres.adm to. (I overwrote the old one in \%systemroot%\inf). If I don't delete inetres out of the linked gpo it still shows the smaller 1.6MB size. Once I delete it and re- add it, it shows the 2.3MB(or whatever) size. Anyway, RSOP shows these policies under "Extra Registry Settings" as opposed to in their appropriate 'tree'. The way I "fixed" that was to re-link the larger inetres.adm on every single GPO. Why is it when you replace a .ADM file all of the GPO's don't start using it? Anyway, once I did that and ran gpupdate /force on my workstation all of the IE policies appeared in their 'appropriate' tree's rather than in "Extra Registry Settings". Can anyone help me on this?     - Permissions Error from Logon VBS I have recently been employed to assist the setup of a new business, and deploy a network based on Windows Server 2003 Small Business Edition SP2. I've written up a small VBS that simply logs a users logon/off to a text file on the server. I've added the script to a domain wide group policy, and I've set the permissions to the folder in question. 'Everyone' has been given write and append permissions, and I personally have full administrative permission. However, the logon script is generating a permissions error. If I go to the folder the log is supposed to be written to locally "E:\Shared\Logs\" I can access, modify, etc. If I go into the folder from the network "\\server\Shared\Logs\" I have no rights, though the permissions show the same as if I had gone to the folder locally.     - multi-homed appliance for SBS and web server Hello Everybody, I'm trying to connect a web server with dynamic content to SQL of SBS Premium (ISA 2k4 installed), by positioning the webserver in DMZ behind the hardware firewall. Network topology: ISP -T1 -> Hardware Firewall -> WebServer (DMZ) -> ISA (SBS) Since port 443 is already forwarded to SBS and also need a different SSL certificate for the web server, I realized that I need a second public IP. Can somebody recommend a reliable multi-homed router? Also, would I be able to link the web server directly to SQL through ISA without going on the Internet, and what is the best way?     - Memory Leak SBS2003 STD A couple of months ago I had to rebuild a SBS2003 STD server for a customer from scratch after a server meltdown and no working backup (Yeah Yeah, I think he has learnt his lesson). I noticed after a few weeks they were getting lack of memory warnings, after investigation it seems that a sqlservr.exe process was the cause, digging deeper the process was furnishing Windows Sharepoint Services, stopping this service (MSSQL$SHAREPOINT) cures the memory leak. It also obviously stops the SBS Intranet/Extranet. Q1. Is there a quik fix available for this ? Q2.     - Fax setup issue I have an external modem that I installed to use under sbs faxing. It is installed on the operating system, but when I try to use the "Configure Fax Services" wizard it complains that I have "not shared the fax". I figured I would share it from the control panel under "printers and faxes". It does not appear here nor can I figure out how to add the fax.     - TCP & UDP connections to server dropped from the Windows 2003 Server Hi, We reloaded Windows 2003 Server SBS, and unable to access the any shared resources (i.e. shared folders). Also, the server cannot do Windows update, and when try to browse the net using IE or Firefox, we realized that it can't access the internet and other network resources. Using ping, tracert, nslookup yielded positive result so the NIC is confirmed to be ok. Our router is acting as DHCP server, so DHCP service for the server has been disabled. Whether the firewall is enabled or disabled, the effect is the same. The TCP and UDP connections were dropped by the system as shown in the log file of the Windows firewall when enabled. Please help!!!     - SBS Update Services 3 Server My Update Services updated themselves from 2.0 to 3.0 in March. I've worked through a number of problems with that install and the clients seem to be updating themselves ok. The SBS console is not reporting any problems with any client or server, and clients do seem to get updates. However... I have not seen an update on the server itself in quite a bit, and the update services console is saying that the server has not been checking in.     - Event ID 1030 + 1058 on workstation + no access so system shares I had this problem right after setting up SBS 2003 3 years ago now and I disabled the SMB signing on the server and it fixed it. I've not had this problem since then. However upon trying to configure a new HP XP Pro SP2 system via http://domainname/connectcomputer. After getting that set up I noticed none of the policies were applying. Turns out I'm getting 1030+1058 in event viewer. I've tried changing the DFS registry value per some help I found somewhere but this has done nothing. None of the other workstations in the network have this problem.. so I can only assume it's this workstation's configuration. Thanks HP! It doesn't matter what user I log in as from that workstation, I cannot browse the system shares on the server. Can anyone give me suggestions on what else to try? I've done the DFS registry key, rebooted a number of times. Made sure the NetBIOS Helper was enabled. DNS and DHCP are fine on the server and workstation. On the Exchange Servers I've so-far set up, I've had to revert to relaying email via the ISP SMTP server as so much email gets bounced by the receiver's anti-spam if we send direct.     - shutdown and restart problem Hi, got a laptop with windows XP Pro SP2 logon to SBS 2003 SP2 domain. I am using roaming profile. I am also using dual monitor with a docking station with the laptop monitor as the secondary monitor. The problem i am having is that when I do a shutdown (or log off) Start > Shutdown/Log Off > choose shutdown it doesn't do anything. When i do it the second time, then the shutdown prompt automatically moves to my secondary montior then it will work.     - How can I get ntbackup to save 5 versions of my backup file like it I'm using SBS backup to perform my nightly backups and it works just great. There's an option in the wizard to tell it to keep 5 backups which I love because you never know. I need to run a scheduled NTbackup (because I can only run a single sbs backup right?) to backup a large (70gb) folder of pictures. I don't want these in my nightly backup but once a week I'd like to capture these in a seperate backup. I'd also like to keep a few versions of this backup similar to the 5 I keep in sbs backup. Question: How can I do this using ntbackup and the windows scheduler? Is there an automated way, or do I need to write a batch file? Believe me, I've done this more than once, but I thought ntbackup might have the functionality built-in since SBS backup seems to be able to do it.     - Mapped drive capacity I have a windows small business server with two hard drives. I am sharing the root of the second ( Data ) drive. When I map a drive letter to this share, windows XP reports the capacity as 1.0 gb with only a few kilobytes free. This drive is a 50 gb drive with 35gb free.     - Cannot connect client to server 2003 My customers network disconnected 2 clients that were connected about 10 day ago. I deleted and reinstalled the computer accounts and even created new ones but I still cannot connect. None of the methods I used were able to connect them so I formatted and reinstalled all of the applications and tried to connect them again. I keep getting the message "the server cannot complete the request." or "the domain cannot find an account for this computer" I checked and the server can see the computers after I put them on a "workgroup" but I still cannot connect.     - Transition Pack for SBS 2003 OEM to Windows 2003 Standard Greetings, I have a domain setup with SBS 2003 Premium SP1 as the Primary Domain Controller. The version of SBS that we have is an OEM that came with the computer from Dell and we do not have software assurance. We do have the maximum number (75) user CALs for SBS. I would like to upgrade to Windows Server 2003 Standard to remove the user limit (and other) restrictions. I would also like to purchase additional CALs to have a total of about 150. After completing the upgrade, I would like to split Exchange off of the SBS machine onto a new computer. A separate SQL Workstation server operating under a processor license is already available on the network so we do not really need a separate SQL Workstation license. The best route appears to be purchasing the SBS 2003 Premium Transition Pack, 75 Transition Pack CALs, 75 Windows Server 2008 CALs, and 75 Exchange 2007 Standard CALs. However, I have a few questions about this process: * Can the Windows Server 2003 Premium Transition pack be applied to the OEM version of SBS? * If yes, would the stand alone licenses provided by the transition pack be retail or OEM? Mainly I am interested in whether we would have transfer rights for the stand alone licenses Windows Server 2003, Exchange Server 2003, etc. or if they must all still be installed on that same Dell computer. *Is there a transition pack still available for SBS 2003 SP1, or would we have to upgrade to SBS 2003 Premium R2 before using the transition pack? If I must upgrade, would there be any licensing problems with applying the upgrade to the OEM SBS version? *If yes to the first two questions, would it be possible to add Software Assurance to the retail licenses I receive once we purchase the transition pack and if so would this allow me to upgrade to Exchange 2007 and Windows Server 2008? *Could I also add SA to the transition pack CALs and if so would this allow me to upgrade them to Exchange 2007 and Windows 2008 CALs?     - Connecting to Exchange... I have recently installed SBS2003 on a Dell PowerEdge server. I cannot ping my server or connect to Exchange with Outlook, however, I can log in to Exchange/OWA via a web browser using the server's static IP or DNS name.     - offline files SBS 2003, XP Pro. Laptops are setup to enable offline files when configuring, workstations are not (I hate the things, major PITA, but users need their stuff when out of office with the laptops). Their My Documents are redirected via SBS GPO, and syn, but nothing else unless they manually select stuff. So far for a couple years, no real headaches, except for having to explain to people that Access databases and psts won't sync, and to manually make a copy if they need it when traveling. Starting yesterday, one user, DaveD, is suddenly sycing offline files with a different user, KathyS's My Documents when loggin off and on (as well as their own). He has local admin rights, and can change any of his own Offline File settings, including turning off completely, or selecting which of his My Document's folders to sync - but he can't get rid of the Make Available Offline checkmark on KathyS\KathyS's Documents or any of the subdirectories - the option is checked off but greyed out. KathyS has not logged on to this laptop in months. We deleted her profile on the laptop, cleared all offline folder cache, turned offline files off and rebooted, then on logging back in to the domain turned offline files back on - and again, her documents folder and subfolders are checked and cannot be unchecked. For now, DaveD has disabled offline files completely, as KathyS has massive amounts of crap he has no need of and it's taking an incredible amount of time to sync, but I need a solution ASAP as he is going on the road Weds and won't have internet access where he's going. (yes he could manually copy the stuff he needs, but... ) I've double checked that there is nothing defined for offline files via rsop.msc, and can't find anything - as I said, this just started yesterday, and nothing has been changed as to GPOs.
