    - VPN Remote Access Issue - Can Login, but can't access local resour I'm trying to log in remotely to a SBS 2003 Domain, fully patched. I'm trying to login from my XP Pro machine at home which is also fully patched. Environment is as follows: There are a total of four servers. 3 Servers exist at the office, I have an additional BDC server that exists at home(remote location). Here's the rundown: At the office: 1 SBS 2003 server (Jupiter) Jupiter has two nics, one nic has a live static IP on the internet which is a FQDN, the other is an internal static IP address for the local business network of 172.16.10.7. 1 Win2K BDC and Print server (Mercury) 1 Win2K File and DHCP Server (Venus) Several desktops connected to the 3 servers At home(my remote location): All computers (desktops and servers) at home connect through a router, with all IP addresses starting with 172.16.11/24. We Have: 1 Win 2K BDC and backup file Server (mars). 2 desktops connected to Mars at home both remotely VPN to Jupiter. The BDC server at home (MARS) connects to the SBS 2003 (Jupiter) via VPN. Home network uses the following internal IP addresses: 172.16.11/24 Business network uses the following internal IP addresses: 172.16.10/24 Everything on the local network at the office (or at home) works flawlessly. Here's the route of the problem: From home, I can login into my SBS 2003 server remotely. But I can't do anything once I get there. If I use my MS Outlook 2007 or Outlook 2003 while logged onto Jupiter through the VPN tunnel, a message keeps popping up saying "needs password". I have entered the password 20 times, and nothing... Today, I again attempted to login remotely via VPN. I obtained an IP address. However, this time I got one ping off to Venus before everything else timed out. I also tried to ping Jupiter, all timed out. System was working flawlessly until about 2-3 weeks ago. Then my home Outlook started crashing all the time because of what appeared to be a problem with access to a public folder that we heavily use at the office, so i decided to delete my pst file at home, delete all my outlook settings, and start over. Only after I deleted my exchange settings at home, I could never get them to populate back when I tried to reconfigure Outlook. Eventually, I noticed that my vpn connections were not listing a VPN IP address. I thought this peculiar so went to the office and checked out the DHCP server (Venus --it's also our file server)). At first, I thought the problem was related to that. So, I rebooted the Venus Win2K server and DHCP was working. I then confirmed that we were getting an ip address via VPN thru a PPP adapter at home. I poked my head around some server settings on the SBS 2003 Server (Jupiter), did the internet configuration wizard again and the firewall config wizard on the SBS 2003 server and went back home. Once I got back home yesterday, everything was great. I could access all network resources from home. I could access everything. I was getting a DHCP address via VPN at home (remote location) and my exchange inbox at home downloaded megabytes of email from the exchange server. Life was good........Until I rebooted my home computer. I don't know if the problem just rematerialized or was related to my reboot of my home computer. Considering that the other computer also gain access again to its server, and then lost it after I reboot, my natural inclination is to blame the reboot of the home XP Pro machine, but it could just be coincidence. Now I'm back to where I started from (sorta). When I connect to the VPN, I'm getting an IP address. It's 172.16.10.25. Last night, I could ping all the servers, mercury, venus, mars, jupiter. I just couldn't do anything inside the network at work. Now I can't even ping the servers. If I try to access a mapped network drive, I get an error message saying "the local device name is already in use" The connection has not been restored. If I boot up outlook it says "needs exchange password" and refuses to do anything else except ask me to renter the password. Same thing happens on the other XP Pro machine at home (I didn't reboot that one). Now, my outlook at home does nothing. It keeps saying "trying to connect to exchange server", but doesn't prompt for a password. Problem seems to be morphing.... I'm really at a loss here. Doesn't appear to be a problem with DHCP or DNS. Perhaps WINS playing a role? Firewall settings on Jupiter (SBS 2003 server) seem like the obvious area to explore. I can login remotely to jupiter by using the remote desktop access, but I just can't access the office's network resources which obviously is problematic for me. Interesting, ever since I installed the SBS server, it has never permanently accepted any changes made to the firewall settings. What I mean here is that if I access "server management" and click on the "change firewall" settings, I must then go through the internet connection wizard everytime. Obviously something is amise here. Might it have something to do with Hosting the DHCP server on Venus (a win2k server)? Am I required to have the PDC/Exchange Server also function as a DHCP server in SBS 2003 environments to support VPN? Further update: When I could no longer ping the office from home via vpn, I reset all of the Firewall settings on home desktop computer and solved that problem. I can now ping away again, but get the dreaded "enter password" when trying to access the exchange server. So perhaps the problem is in the firewall settings, question is where. Is it the server? Desktop PC? If it is the desktop PC at home, why does the other desktop PC also not get access when no changes have been made to that machine....this to me indicates it's a server issue. Question is where is the problem. Any thoughts, greatly appreciated.     - User profile changes when logging on Hi, SBS 2003 SP2. I set up roaming profiles for 3 users by creating a shared folder called profiles on the d: drive. I then changed the location of the users profile to this folder. One user has had her profile change twice since Thursday when she logs on. I only changed these 3 users to the new folder without making any changes to the default server settings.     - Exchange SP2 - no autoupdate? I just realized one sbs server at a client's location isn't running exchange sp2 yet. I can't remember installing it on the others but this is the only one without it.. Is SP2 for exchange supposed to come as an auto update or only manually?     - Desperate to email; Can you HELP? Greetings, I have re-examined my email setup on this new installation over the last several days and frankly, cannot find the error.     - Very unusual problem trying to log into SBS domain I have an XP SP2 Dell laptop that is part of my SBS domain. Worked fine before. Today the boss said he cannot log into the domain and asked me to take a look at it. Very strange.This computer was joined previously to the SBS domain and has a computer account. When I try to log in to the domain I get an error "The system cannot log you on now because the domain DOMAIN NAME is not available." Ok so I thought I would eliminate the wall connection and cable and took it to another office and plugged it in there. Same results. So I thought perhaps it could ne a bad internal nic so I plugged it directly into the dsl router, gave it a static public address and everything is fine. So I eliminated the nic. So I tried again. Same results. I did notice that it could not obtain a DHCP lease so I assigned it a static. Same results. I'm out of ides and options here. Anyone got a clue?     - Adding a second SharePoint Server I have a development team and the manager is adamant that he have his own SharePoint site. Currently the one that came with SBS is not good enough for him, I guess. So I have loaded an old P3 1.2 Ghz 1GB RAM with Server 2003 and added it to the network. I was just about to load in SharePoint when I thought I would get your opinion first. Is this a good idea? is there a way to make a sub-level in the current SharePoint website that only the developers can get to? Currently the Companyweb has the usual phone list, Pictures, a few anouncements. *shaking my head...why do they ask for these things. Lucky for us we have images so we can restore.     - WSUS 3.0 Update On friday I ran the windows update on the server and it wanted to update WSUS 2.0 to WSUS 3.0. OK. So I let it update and then I log off the server and go home for the weekend...paint the kitchen have a couple of brown pops come back Monday and the WSUS 3.0 is no whereot be seen. To do this, you specify the IP addresses of the servers in your internal network that you want excluded from Sender ID filtering.     - Remote Web Workplace SBS 2003? I can access the site externally. I can login to the site (domain admin). When I go to login to the server or any workstation I get the following message. The client could not connect to the remote computer. Remote connections might not be enabled or the computer might be to busy to accept new connections. It is also possible that the network problems are preventing your connection. Please try connecting again later. If the problem continues to occur, contact your administrator.     - Fax services stuck in "starting", buttons to stop/start greyed out Over the weekend I installed fax services into SBS so that I can fax from Outlook. Everything worked. I had shut down the server since I'm still in "test" mode.     - Repeated Event Viewer errors during SBSBackup I have an SBS 2003 R2 server (fully patched) that is working extremely well in every respect except for some niggly errors that occur during the SBSBackup process. My backup takes place at midnight - I'm using all the defaults - and backups are sent to an external USB HDD (they are around 12GB at the moment). The backups themselves never fail, but pretty much every Performance Report sent to me in the morning contains some red shields (I'm beginning to hate them) in the "Critical Errors" and/or "Critical Errors in Application Log" and all of these errors occur when the SBSBackup process is running - NEVER at any other time. The errors are all related in that an error is generated when the system attempts to backup log files for certain services (DHCP/Exhange/WSUS etc..)during the SBSBackup: DHCP - error message: tcpsvcs (1740) An attempt to move the file "C:\WINDOWS\System32\dhcp\j50.log" to "C:\WINDOWS\System32\dhcp\j5001250.log" failed with system error 32 (0x00000020): "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. ". The move file operation will fail with error -1032 (0xfffffbf8). OR: tcpsvcs (1740) An attempt to move the file "C:\WINDOWS\System32\dhcp\backup\temp\" to "C:\WINDOWS\System32\dhcp\backup\new" failed with system error 5 (0x00000005): "Access is denied. ". The move file operation will fail with error -1032 (0xfffffbf8). WSUS - error message: The Windows Server Update Services Server experienced an error while attempting to write to the log file. 264.3 System.IO.IOException: The process cannot access the file "C:\Program Files\Update Services\LogFiles\SoftwareDistribution.log" because it is being used by another process. Exchange Info Store: Information Store (7936) First Storage Group: An attempt to move the file "C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\mdbdata\E00.log" to "C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\mdbdata\E000005D.log" failed with system error 32 (0x00000020): "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. ". The move file operation will fail with error -1032 (0xfffffbf8). ---------- In most instances the error is easily fixed by stopping and restarting the service, but in one instance I had to reboot. Now these are really niggly annoying problems and I wonder if anyone has come across this before? Here is my troubleshooting so far: - plenty of free disk space - Anti-virus exclusions set fine - in particular on the files and folders specified in the above errors. - SBS BPA only reports a warning about an old driver for my NIC - so far not updated it I am going to update the NIC driver to see if that helps, but apart from that I am at a loss. My other thought was to exlude these specific log files from SBSBackup... Any one any other thoughts? Is it likely to be the SBSBackup that's causing these errors (seems that way as they only ever occur during the backup)...? Could it be a problem with the VSS Writers (http://blogs.technet.com/asksbs/archive/2008/04/23/troubleshooting-vss-and-backup.aspx)?     - how to setup faxing service Hi , I have setup a Microsoft faxing service with 4 modems to one computer. I set up one modem to both receive and send and the other 3 modems are only for receive. the send and receive work well, but I have a problem for distribution. the 4 modems are bound to 4 telephone number xxxxxx1,xxxxxx2,xxxxxx3,xxxxxx4. I set up the 4 receiving fax for above 4 number to 4 email address (e1@.xxx.xx,e2,e3,e4) the problem is : no mind which number I send to , the fax is always received by the xxxxxx1 and sent to mailbox e1@xxx.xx.     - Migrating SBS to new hardware I was following the article "Migrating Windows Small Business Server 2003 to New Hardware" http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsServerSolutions/SBS/en/library/4082d695-2075-4ca0-8af8-99fd04b78b2d1033.mspx?mfr=true and along the way my destination server stopped booting. It would get stuck at "applying personal settings" Same thing under safe mode with networking, desktop never appeared. In my haste I decided to scrap my new destination server installation and reload Windows from scratch and start over. Problem now is I had already promoted that first destination server as a global catalog server and transfered the operations master roles. So now when I got to that point on my second run through I get "ERROR" where my source server should be and below that it says "the current operations master is offline. this role cannot be transfered." in the Operations Masters dialog. If I click change I get "the current FSMO cannot be contacted" etc and clicking help from there talks about siezing the role. So my question is this the only way to procede? This is the help text I get; "The domain controller currently acting as the RID master is not available. This could be caused by network problems or by a failure of the RID master computer. There should be a RID master in each domain. Temporary unavailability of a RID master is not visible to network users. Seizing the RID master role is a drastic step that should be considered only if the current RID master will never be available again. Before proceeding with the role seizure, you must permanently disconnect the current RID master from the network. Important After the RID master role has been seized, the boot drive for the original RID master must be completely reformatted and the operating system reinstalled before that computer can be returned to the network. " This is ok with me because that first destination server is already formatted. Is this the best way to go or should I try something else?     - SBS Exchange Backup issue Hi All We have a SBS 2003 premium server and we use SBS Backup to backup all partitions, system state and Microsoft Information store to a network drive on a NAS box or occasionaly to a USB drive. The backup logs in SBS server management indicate no problems. However when we use the NTBackup restore tab to inspect the backup files and drill down to the log files, mailbox and public folders the backup program reports 0 kb and no entries in each of these 3 exchange backup folders. Could anyone please tell me if this correct as it appears very worrying to me when the logs show no problems. The backup file size would seem to indicate that the info store is indeed backed up as they are backed up once from the info store part of the backup and again from the full partition backup. I created a user, setup the RRAS network connection, and fiddled with settings in ISA. If you need more info on this I can provide it. At the moment both of these sites are connecting, but I am experiencing strange behaviour and was wondering if I have setup the connections correctly. Problems: Branch A: sometimes a connection will be added to the â??Remote Access Clientsâ?? instead of â??Network Interfacesâ??. When the branch router instigates the connection the users of the VPN not to be able to get internal websites, but they can still reach external websites and internal network locations. Also I get regular errors in the event log stating: â??Event ID: 14147. ISA Server detected routes through the network adapter Network Connection that do not correlate with the network to which this network adapter belongs. When networks are configured correctly, the IP address ranges included in each array-level network must include all IP addresses that are routable through its network adapters according to their routing tables. Otherwise valid packets may be dropped as spoofed. The following ranges are included in the network's IP address ranges but are not routable through any of the network's adapters: 10.255.255.255-10.255.255.255;. Note that this event may be generated once after you add a route, create a remote site network, or configure Network Load Balancing and may be safely ignored if it does not re-occur.â?? Branch B: reports regular errors in the event log stating: â??Event ID: 20050. The user Domain\CrVPN connected to port VPN5-6 has been disconnected because no network protocols were successfully negotiated.â??     - auto-started services not running (messenger service) Recently is I have been getting Server performance reports that the messenger service is not running, I have verified this in the services mmc, and it is reporting that the service is stopping. Yhis used to happen when installing updates for exchange server, and restarting the server would put it back to a running state, however this no longer works.     - Converting from POP3 to SMTP.... And I have two questions and want comments... If I understand all that I read here and elsewhere, I can add an MX record with a higher priority than the current one so that mail goes to my server, but then if my server or connection is down, it will go to the same place it's always gone, my hosting provider's servers, correct? The big question though is how does my "catch-all" stuff get handled? Currently, I have tons of "@mydomain.com" addresses floating around that I give out when I order stuff online. They aren't attached to an AD account, and I don't want to attach them, but I still want that mail delivered to my mailbox. Is there a setting in Exchange that will allow that to happen, and won't just reject the mail because the address doesn't exist? I realize that I will get tons of spam because of this, but I do already. :) I already have my domain, and I have a dyndns.org account that I can point the MX record to.     - not able to connect to the Terminal Server on SBS network We have a SBS2k3 Standard (2 nic and a router) and a Terminal Server within the domain. We have a job site where users get on the net via satellite. Everything was fine until the satellite internet ISP was changed - the users on the job site are not able to connect to the terminal server any more, while users from other remote locations are fine. Here is the details - Users on the job site are able to launch RWW without a problem. (https://office.mycompany.com/remote) - However, when they click on "Connect to my company's application- sharing server", they get errors like below: VBScripte: Remote Desktop Disconnected The client could not establish a connection to the remote computer. The most likely causes for this error are: 1) Remote connections might not be enabled at the remote computer. 2) The maximum number of connecitons might be exceeded at the remote computer 3) A network error might have occurred while establishing the connection. 4) The remote Web Workplace designated port might be blocked by a firewall - Users from other remote locations do not have this problem. I think the new satellite ISP is blocking port 4125. But they will not do anything or change anything, simply nothing they will do for this problem.     - Disk with NTDS failing Hi everyone, I've got an SBS 2003 SP2 server. The disk on which NTDS resides (not the boot disk), is failing, and keeping lsass.exe from starting. I can boot into Directory Services Restore Mode, logged in as machine Admin. My AD event log has events indicating that AD can't access its database, such as this (event ID 508) NTDS (412) NTDSA: A request to write to the file "C:\NTDS\temp.edb" at offset 172032 (0x000000000002a000) for 122880 (0x0001e000) bytes succeeded, but took an abnormally long time (122 seconds) to be serviced by the OS. This problem is likely due to faulty hardware. Please contact your hardware vendor for further assistance diagnosing the problem. SO: How do I move directory services (x:\NTDS) to a different disk?     - Autoarchive not working... I've imported messages & folders from Outlook Express to exchange and tried some autoarchive tests. Nothing archived. I set outlook to archive older than 9 months and had messages well over a year old. Autoarchive did not archive these messages. I'm guessing it has to do with the fact that they were imported from OE? I can manually move these messages to the archive folder as a workaround.     - Can't login to OWA Runing SBS 2003 Premium fully patched. ========= I've done (proper - with MS KB's) uninstall and re-install of Intranet and WSS 2.0/SWSS 3.0 SP1 (separate issue), have run CEICW, iisreset and SBS, Exchange, and ISA BPA's until zero-errors, and event logs until zero-errors. I can login to RDP (from inside) and RWW (remote) from outside just fine. But I can't log into OWA. I get the login screen to come up (although I could swear it used to say "Domain\Username" to the left of the box but not it just says "Username") but I can't login. I've tried it with and without the "domain\" before my login name, but no luck. Tried inside and outside the domain. The error says, "You could not be logged on to Outlook Web Access. Ensure that your user name and password are correct, and then try again." I am using https://mail.whoopingcrane.org/exchange . From inside I try http://<servername>/exchange . Both result in the same error. Since I've no errors in the event logs or the BPA's, I'm at a loss of what could be wrong. I suspect something within the Exchweb virtual directory of the Default wesbite in IIS. Any ideas out there?     - Moving from test lab to production, will Change IP Address tool do it I'm moving my SBS box from my test network onto the production network soon and just wanted to check and make sure that using the "Change Ip Address Tool" would do everything that I needed in terms of changing the IP address for my SBS box?     - Remote server Backups I have a remote Server 2003 R2 x64 SP2, with exchange 2007 installed. I back this up with Backup Exec 11d. I find that i have to re-register/reboot this server everyday because the writers seen when using the vssadmin list writers command show that all are waiting for completion. If i dont re-register and reboot, backups fail. On occasions, they may recover but the exchange writer will display a retryable error which again means i have to re-boot.     - SQL 205 License Hi I'm just installing SBS 2003 R2, my second time around. I've got to the point that I want to upgrade the MSDE instance to SQL 2005 that comes on the Premium Technologies Disc. When I ran the setup.exe I get prompted for a license key, so I went back and ran the top level setup which gives the option to install ISA 2004 or SQL 2005 from an application window. I click on SQL 2005 and the same thing occurs, I get past the basic config and then am prompted for a license key. I'm fairly sure this key should auto-populate but it hasn't. The only thing I haven't done which I can think might be affecting it is activate SBS online as I'm still running my first install of SBS on old hardware. I've been avoiding activating it so that I don't have any down time. Can you suggest what it might be, and if it is simply that I haven't activated SBS yet?     - SBS2003 and Debugging VS 2008 Web Projects I am have a devil of a time trying to debug my VS Web project on a SBS2003 network where the IIS that is hosting the web project is a server inside the SBS internal network (not the PDC). Yes, ISA is installed and running (I believe it is the latest supported with all SPs installed). The problem seems to be an issue with the Debugger_Users group. I have installed the remote debugging tools on the server (and VS2008) and cannot seem to install the Debugger_users group on the local machine. I have even installed the remote debug tools for VS2008 Team Architect on the SBS server... still no debugger_users or any group that looks like it. In the VS project, I am unable to attach to the machine manually and automatically. The documentation seems to describe a dependency on debugger_users. Where/how can I create/load this group on the local and/or the SBS machine? Can I create a group named debugger_users? I did this and still am unable to connect. Thanks for your help with this!!!     - OWA, SSL, and 403.6 error when accessing externally (internet) Hi, I'm not natively an SBS person, so forgive me for lack of experience here. This issue refers to SBS 2003 with Exchange 2003 SP2. I saw a post not long ago (6 April I think?) which describes same issue we're seeing with clients accessing OWA via SSL from the internet (internal access OK). I have checked all virtual directories (and the default web site), and they are all ticked to grant ALL IP addresses (no restrictions). The cert is installed OK, the chain verifies fine, and the Exchange virtual server is configured to allow directory browsing, so I don't think there is any issue with Exchange or IIS per se. I am guessing the issue is somewhere with SBS or a built-in security mechanism in place (does it use ISA?). Reason for guess is because we migrated an Enterprise edition DC over to this new server and everything went quite smooth, but in the process I had not config'd the SBS in the standard manner (using the wizards) because I was working remotely via RDP a lot and could not afford to have the network config (and firewall, etc..) get changed on me and kick me out :-( so all work was done manually (no wizards) and with the ICS/FW disabled. Later on I did eventually run the CEICW and specify that Outlook should be permitted from external, but I still get the 403.6. Do I need to re-enable the FW and let the CEICW do its thing? If so, I will attempt to get some out of band management set up so I don't have to worry about the changes it could make to the local network config. I just feel like some security setting is not getting config'd properly. Or perhaps I can do this manually? Everything else was config'd manually without the wizards and is working teriffic. application pool for new version and a virtual directory. However, in
the new virtual directory it does not give me the option of choosing
3.5( just 1.1 and 2.0). I did not get any installation errors and I
am not sure what to do from here.

I think you are in the wrong forum for this type of question. You might
want to visit microsoft.public.dotnet.framework.aspnet and post your
question there.

For information purposes, you can specify the .NET version you want to use
from within Visual Studio, when you develop your application.
