Adding Dedicated Exchange 2003 Server to SBS 2003 Network
I'm currently running SBS 2003 Premium (not R2). We have 65 SBS CALs, so
we're getting closer to the 75 limit. We have just recently purchased the
SBS 2003 Premium Transition Pack and upgrade CALs, but we have not actually
performed the transition install yet.
My question is can we legally install Exchange 2003 on another member server
running Windows 2003 R2 server? I have ordered the Exchange 2003 CD/DVD
media to go along with my Transition Packs. It seems like I'm covered both
ways, but these licensing questions are way, way above my paygrade.
And the reason we have not actually installed the Transition Pack yet is
because we don't currently need it. The sole reason we purchased it was
because the older SKUs for pre-R2 SBS Transitions Packs are discontinued and
hard to locate. I listened to a podcast related to the SBS Transition Pack
install process and it addressed not actually installing the TP--it implied
that you simply needed to purchase it to be in compliance.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Redirect My Documents
Right now I am re-directing My Documents of all my users to their

access to GMail through ISA 2004
Running SBS 2003 Premium. Got a staff member who has asked for a
"loosening" of ISA so she can get to her GMail account. She says "half the
time she is disconnected" when trying to access the site.
I don't have a specific rule for or against GMail, but I recently used
ISAServer.org's and MS's papers on security for ISA and hardening of ISA, so
think that is the reason.
I'm personnally against any loosening of ISA, but would like some comments
on whether my settings are preventing her access, which rule(s)/setting(s),
and whether it's an acceptable risk.

Connecting SBS Server 2003 to SBS Server 2003
I have an existing SBS 2003 domain that is running fine. I have an
additional SBS Server 2003 license that is not installed anywhere. Can you
join a second SBS 2003 Server to an existing SBS 2003 serve domain as a
member server? I found docs that say Win 2003 Server can be a member server
to an SBS2003 domain, but nothing abaout SBS joining SBS. Please point to
any Microsoft technotes.

Slow browsing thru My Network Places
SBS2003 PDC and about 25 W2k workstations. Some machines experience
very slow (4-20 seconds) each time the navigate thru a folder tree on
the file server. Interestingly if one uses a drive mapping or directly
access the UNC path the responsiveness is less than a second for each
mouse click. IOW the latency only occurs when accessed via My Network
Places.
I have checked many posts and have not found a solution even though
many have had exactly this same symptom. Saw a post the eliminated
some registry key about looking for scheduled tasks but that had no
noticeable effect. Any ideas? Tag: Find easy what you need for windows(98, ME, xp, vista) Tag: 394172
SBS Backup and priv1.edb
Good day forum
SBS Backups have recently started failing on an SBS 2003 R2 Premium server.
The backups were running 100% error free until 10 days ago. We are backing
up to USB drives and we are doing full backups.
Exchange appears to be operating normally (from a user perspective), but
from the backup perspective it appears a little off color.

RE: Backups to an NAS (Configuring)
Greetings,
Some time ago I posted this request:
I purchased a Snap Server 210 as a means to backup my network server
using Microsoft Small Business Server 2003. However, I discovered an
article (Article ID : 317173) on Microsoft's support page stating,
"Microsoft does not support network-attached storage
If access to a disk resource requires that a share be mapped, or if the
disk resource appears as a remote server by means of a Universal
Naming Convention (UNC) path (for example, \\servername\sharename) on the
network, the disk storage system is not supported as a location for
Exchange Server databases.
Microsoft only supports using Microsoft Windows Hardware Quality Labs
(WHQL) qualified storage devices with Exchange 2003. Exchange 2003
addresses a number of issues that prevent earlier versions of Exchange from
being used in conjunction with network-attached storage devices. With
these changes, you can host Exchange 2003 database files on
network-attached storage devices, but any solutions that provide this
capability
must also provide additional functionality to fully enable the solution.
This includes manually moving the Exchange database files to the device
because the Exchange 2003 System Manager tool does not support moving
database files to a remote file system."
Is it feasible to use my Snap Server for backups? If so would you
please provide me detailed instructions on how to accomplish this.
Here is valuable insight on this topic submitted from Adaptec's technical
support.

Thank you,We have received your correspondence about how to back up data from
your EXCHANGE 2003 server to your SNAP SERVER 210 and that doing this
through SMB ("Samba")--which requires a mapped network drive--is not
recommended by Microsoft. The only way we can see this working is
most-likely through iSCSI, where the Snap Server is configured as an iSCSI
Target
and the EXCHANGE server uses an iSCSI INITIATOR to connect to that
target and configure that target as if it were a local drive connected
externally like SCSI, FireWire or USB. There are two advantages to this
from the perspective of the EXCHANGE server:
1.) With the EXCHANGE server seeing this as a local drive and not a
network drive, it can be treated like a local drive, all the way down to
configuring and partitioning that drive as an honest-to-goodness NTFS
partition. This takes SMB and the GUARDIANOS on the SNAP SERVER 210
out of the picture. The only connection is from the iSCSI Host through
the INITIATOR to the Target.
2.) With the EXCHANGE server seeing this as a local drive and not a
network drive, one does not need to worry about the SMB configuration on
the system where the network drive is actually stored and whether or
not the SMB emulation will transfer all the inherent rights and
permissions of the local system that EXCHANGE uses, such as CREATOR OWNER and
EVERYONE, which are local system policies that are local to the EXCHANGE
(or WINDOWS server or workstation) host machine itself. The Snap
Server's version of SMB will not support those and one can not configure
these to work correctly through SHARE ACCESS or the folder rights and
permissions from a WINDOWS workstation. In an iSCSI configuration, this
is taken out of the configuration because once again, the iSCSI target
on the Snap Server
is seen as a local drive, not a mapped network drive.
Hopefully this has given you "food for thought" here. "
I have not had the time to implement this approach still having problems
with receiving emails on this install, however, I hope this helps anyone in
the community.

SBS at server hotel
Hi!
I have the issue of having our SBS moved to a server hotel where it only has
a network plug and a certain amount of ports that is opened to it from
outside Internet. I tried to run CEICW and told it that the server was hooked
directly to the Internet, as the firewall doesn't have any IP address.
Having only one NIC (the onboard one) in the SBS, I was prompted to insert
yet another one in order for the server to accept the new Internet
connectivity method. When having done this, I had yet another trouble and
that was that I could not access the file shares that I had created on the
server. I have tried to access the file shares from both Vista Business,
Vista Ultimate as well as Vista Home Premium machines. Some of them were
connected to the domain of which the SBS is the DC.
Now, when I try to connect to the VPN connection through which I use the
server, I succeed. Exchange is working perfectly across this VPN link, as
well as WSUS 3.0. However not the file shares.
CEICW prompted me to insert yet another NIC and so I did, but as there was
no LAN to hook it up to, it is still left unplugged. The network connection
that is to be connecting the server to the presumed LAN is hence
disconnected. Might this be the reason for me not being able to access the
files on the server? If yes, how do I change the settings in the CEICW or in
another spot of the server in order for the file shares to become accessible
again?
A funny thing that I think is extremely peculiar is that when I tried to
connect from a Vista Home Premium machine, and typed \\FQDN\share name, I
actually succeeded in getting a connection to the server shares and I could
see and read them. When I connect from a domain connected computer however,
it only tells me that I cannot access the file share. If I instead type
\\[Server internal IP]\share name I get the same result, so I start to think
that there is something seriously wrong with the config.

Migrating from single sata to raid 5
Hi,
I'm planning to migrate a old SBS 2003 server from the single sata
drive they have at the moment to a RAID 5 configuration with 3 drives
(including the original drive).
I have Acronis backups of the whole server and could just build the
array clean and then recover from the backup image.
But I was wondering, never having done this before, if it's possible
to somehow just attach the existing drive to the raid controller and
let it take care of building the RAID 5 array by itself? Or does the
management software which usually comes with raid card allow you to do
this?

incoming mail to sharepoint+PF+folder

PDF file gets saved on a document folder.
in short, i need that this incoming mail gets treated as a direct incoming

how can i do this?, i tried searching on how to add a mailbox to a

SBS 2003 losing netbios resolution
We're seeing a strange problem .... SBS 2003 r2 approx 10 XP Pro clients.
They have applications that look at Netbios names to run... eg. sage etc.
they look for \\sbs .
They work fine for hours and then all of a sudden they stop, and if you do
\\sbs to see the shares all it shows is the offline redirected my documents.
If you do \\sbs.domain.local then the shares all appear fine, however because
the apps use just \\sbs they don't work.
It takes a reboot of the server AND the workstations to get everything
working again.
Have run dcdiag and netdiag and it passes all tests.
I've tried an entry for the server in the hosts file but that doesn't help.
Clients are all dhcp node type 0x8 which I believe is hybrid. WINS/NBNS and
DNS Server ip's are handed out over dhcp too.
This is causing major pain for my customer so any help is greatly appreciated. Tag: Find easy what you need for windows(98, ME, xp, vista) Tag: 394135
Wireless WPA on SBS not authenticating
Morning,
I am trying to configure an Cisco 1200AP and a Linksys WRT54G to work with
certificates. I followed this guide to perfection that I was given earlier.
http://home.comcast.net/~clearviewtc/
It was a great guide and helped immensly with my implementation. I did the
following:
Installed an configured Certification Authority
Installed Internet Auth Service
Defined my RADUIS Clients and Access Policy for Wireless
I created a wireless group and a wireless GPO
GPO consisting of Autoenrollment for "Computer" Certificates
I set my gpo so that it only authenticates Computer Certs / TKIP/ WPA
I can see on a client machine that the cert is there and it is the correct
cert
---- But naturally when I go to connect to the Network with a client device
I get no luck... just says Validating Identity -----
Im guess im frustrated because I can see where I went wrong on with this
guide, Im working with my linksys now and still no luck, any good guides to
peap maybe?

Domain Admin on 2nd Server can't run programs across the network
Hi all,
I have an SBS 2003 Server (SP2 + R2), and recently added a 2nd Windows 2003
R2 Server to the domain as an Application Server. When logged on as any SBS
Domain user (even as the Domain Administrator) on the application server, I
can run/execute any program on the local disks, but when I try to run or
install a program accross the network I get the following error:
"Windows cannot access the specified device path or file. You may not have
appropriate permissions to access the item."
However, if I log on to the application server with the local administrator
account, I can run programs across the network. Domain users on the XP Pro
workstations can also run programs from across the network.
So it appears as if there is a policy being enforced by the SBS server which
disallows logged on domain users on additional servers from running
executables across the network.
Help. Can anyone shed light on this?
Thanks.
If I log on as any SBS user (even with Domain Admin rights) I can not run
programs across the network.

svchost.exe, wmiprvse.exe, 100% CPU and http 404
I have a problem with my SBS Service Pack 1. Quite often I get the CPU to
run at 100 % for a few minutes at a time. I have installed Process Explorer
and I see it comes from both svchost.exe and wmiprvse.exe. In reading around
here, it seems to be an issue of last year.
Looking into my UpdateServices, I see that my settings seems to be proper,
but when I click on Update Services in Standard Management I get the http 404
error, the ressource cannot be found. When I look at the expanded tree under
Update Services: Installation Error, Waiting for Review, Installation
Status, they all work but mostly empty, except Installation Status that only
has old stuff. So I guess my Update Service does not operate properly.
Also when I go in Internal Web Site, under Standard Management, the window
opens fine, but pretty much anything in it like Manage Your Comany's Internet
Web Site I also get http 404. If I type http://companyweb on the browser on
the server or client I get the Welcome Page of SBS. On that page if I click
My Company's Internet Web Site, I only get the Welcome Page of SBS again.
I am wondering if it is not all related. Any ideas what the problems are ?

RWW and Companyweb Not Working
Hello
I have a new install of SBS 2003 Premium w/o installing the Premium options
(SQL and ISA).
During the install, I left with disk 2 running. When I got back, it appeared
the computer had rebooted. I restarted the process. I tried to complete the
process and was only partially successful. Exchange would not install. NNTP
was corrupted. I uninstalled and reinstalled it. Then installed Exchange.
As far as I can tell, everything is now solid EXCEPT companyweb and RWW. I
found and followed Manfred Zhuang instructions on a thread with the same
subject line as mine.
I have removed and reinstalled the SharePoint Services
(http://support.microsoft.com/?id=829114).
I reran CEICW (again) but this time making sure that I did not use the 'do
not change' option.
Nothing working yet.
I have downloaded the IIS 6 resource kit.
If someone has a quick answer, I'd sure like it. Failing that, I need
someone who can read the log files when I generate them.
Thanks.

We are using SBS 2003 Premium and have an account for Hackersafe, which test
every day our server for vulnerabilities. The last few weeks we got a report
that this server is not hackersafe. The report says that it found an Blind MS
SQL Injection Vulnerability. The server is fully patched! Sometimes when we
do an on demand scan at hackersafe, there is no problem, but after a few days
the vulnerability shows again.
The Blind MS SQL Injection vulnerability is found at the following point:

Unauthenticated Network
Hi Everyone,
I have one user with a Vista Business Notebook, whose network (in Network
and Sharing Center) keeps changing to Unauthenticated.
Once it changes to Unauthenticated, they are unable to access any network
resources, including the internet.
After a reboot, the Unauthenticated part goes away again - But it seems to
come back a few times a day.
Has anyone else seen this before?
The Notebook was added with the wizards. Tag: Find easy what you need for windows(98, ME, xp, vista) Tag: 394082
Domain Name Question
I struggled with this one and finally figured it out but I want to
understand what is going on with this network.
Single DC on the network. When I looked at all of the domain members
under computer properties, the domain name only reads "local". I also
looked under the active directory on the server and the computer
properties of the server and it was listed as "local". I assumed that
someone prior to me had set this up as a single level DNS domain name.
So I tried to add a member with "local" as the domain name and it
continued to fail.
So eventually I noticed that if I browsed the network on a workstation
that was already part of the domain the domain name was actually
"DOMAIN". So I tried to add the member with this name and it worked.
But it still displays as simply "local" when viewed under computer
properties, under active directory on the DC, etc.
Why is the FQDN not showing. I expect it to be displayed as
"DOMAIN.local"??
Is there a group policy setting that hides this part of the domain
name.
All is working fine I just wanted to understand why this is happening? Tag: Find easy what you need for windows(98, ME, xp, vista) Tag: 394072
OT? OWA, Calendar item, categories...
How does one enter or edit these. A user wants to categorise some of
the new calendar items (appt's) they are making.
Is this possible via OWA?

clicking send in OWA puts the message in drafts...
OWA runs perfectly on the server. The server is SBS 2003 Premium SP2.
Outside of the LAN, OWA runs fine except for two things.
FIRST: You can't open the contacts.
SECOND: When you click on send the window reloads to the Exchange main
page and the message is put in the Drafts folder.
What do I need to do that will fix it.

Exchange mailboxes cannot be retrieved by Outlook
I have a problem that involves SBS2003, Exchange Server and POP3 mail.
Brand new installation, all patches and SP applied.
Currently using POP3 from ISP until domain name based accounts can be set
up, and will need to continue it for several months until all clients are
converted to new email addresses.
Outgoing email works fine (forwarded to host).
POP3 retrieval works, and appears to deliver the messages to the appropriate
mailboxes.
The event log has no errors. Shows opening the pop3 accounts, downloading,
and delivering, then closing out.
I can go into message tracking and search for and pull up messages for any
given user. They're all there w/ dates, times, who from, etc.).
Of course, I can't read the emails - just know that they are there. And
that's one of my questions: is there any way to actually read these emails?
When I try to retrieve these emails via Outlook 2003 (SP3, all patches), it
finds nothing there. I have tried reconfiguring Outlook settings (removing
the Exchange account, rebooting, adding the Exchange account again). All
that did was to delete all the cached info on the local workstation and give
me a blank account. I definitely have the correct login/passwords on the
Exchange accounts.
On day 1, the email was actually working, then stopped on day 2 for no known
reason. ie: absolutely no changes to Exchange or POP3 settings. Only change
that day was to install Kaspersky's Enterprise Space Security, which appears
to be functioning correctly.
So my questions are:
Is there any way to read those emails if I cannot retrieve them through
Outlook?
Is it a POP3 problem, an Outlook problem, an Exchange problem, or a
Kaspersky problem?
Any chance that uninstalling and reinstalling the POP3 connector would help?
Is there anything that you can think of that would cause this?
Even without an answer, any ideas on direction for troubleshooting would be
greatly appreciated. Tag: Find easy what you need for windows(98, ME, xp, vista) Tag: 394054

Need help deploying software via Group Policy Management
We are trying to roll out the Office 2007 compatibility pack company
wide. We are using the group policy manager to do so, and are
assigning it by computer rather than user. On out test computers the
program is installing successfullly, but it looks like its doing it
even if it was manually installed beforehand. Thats not the big issue
though. The big problem is this-
Computer A and computer B both get tossed in the group and on their
next reboot they both install the desired software. Then on computer
A the program gets removed for some reason. Next time it is restarted
and logged into it does not reinstall the software. Why? It is still
in the same group as before. We thought maybe if we gave it a day it
would reinstall, but no such luck.
Thanks for the help. Tag: Find easy what you need for windows(98, ME, xp, vista) Tag: 394042

Setup Routing on SBS for I/net as well as for access to L-o-B web-
Dear All,
Can anyone help me with the following issue:
At one of my Customer location, we had setup SBS 2003 R2 Prem. as the Main &
only Server. As the customers wants the access of the server from outside. We
had configure RASS with a Static Public IP on the external LAN Card connected
to a DSL Router (Router configured in Bridge Mode to ISP's Internet) and a
192.168.0.1 Static IP on the Internal LAN Card. DHCP is also configured on
the SBS Box.
Internet Access on Server is fine. Server is accessible through RDP outside
the premises over Internet.
Current Scenario
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Currently my Customer is having about 10~15 client computers.
2. My Customer business is related to telecom, so all his client computers
are supposed to access certain L-o-B web-apps, of which access is provided,
by
the, parent telecom company. All these L-o-B web-apps are (in a way) intranet
website of the parent telecom company.
3. To access these L-o-B web-apps, all client computers are configured with a
Static IP from the parent telecom company.
4. Connectivity to access Static IP = They have another DSL Line from the
same parent telecom company, on which Internet access is blocked, but
Intranet access is available. This DSL line is terminated into a DSL Router.
The DSL Router is connected to a Switch (Semi-Managed, but currently being
used as an unmanged switch only, as no services are configured) and all
client computer are also connected to this Switch
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, the prob. is as under:
We have to configure the SBS Server to route both:
1. The Internet Access &
2. The Access to the L-o-B Web-apps
We want to get away with the static IP's provided by the parent telecom
company as managing them in a workgroup environment is becoming too much a
prob. And at the same time we would like to move to DC environment for better
usage & control of the resources and environment.
I'm having the prob., as to how to route the traffic of the client machines
once connected to SBS Server via. switch to access the L-o-B web-apps of the
parent telecom company?
Please help! Any guidance is this regard will be of great help.
Thanks,

New Exchange domain
The company has sold and has a new name (therefore new domain.com). I know I
can't change the domain without a reinstall. That is not necessary in this
case anyway. How do I change the Exchange email from david@abc.com to
david@xyz.com? What happens to all the old mail in the old stores? Can they
be moved? Thanks, David Tag: Find easy what you need for windows(98, ME, xp, vista) Tag: 394027
activesync over air error 0x85010001
setting up 1st mobile phone version 6, activesync 4.5?
first of all, i set up my iphone with imap and it is ok.
we have a purchased ssl cert.
phone refueses to sync, reports 85010001. it does not ask me to re-enter
the user credentials, so that's probably correct.
eventvwr:
Unexpected Exchange mailbox Server error: Server: [server-name.DOMAIN.local]
User: [user@website.com] HTTP status code: [400]. Verify that the Exchange
mailbox Server is working correctly.
i've tried:
checked permissions in IIS for virtual dir, all 3, exchange, oma,
activesync. security access, and non require ssl. -as listed in numerous
threads. no luck.
checked the iis metabase, and Dynamic Compression (2 settings) were already
set to FALSE.
i turned off ip address filtering, so all addresses are granted for oma
if i open a browser to https///exchange-oma itpops up a clear text auth
window, i can login and see the folders and messages.
the phone still gives same error code, and server the same error.
the phone settings only keeps the website address, not the https, nor the
/exchange-oma, so that must be automatic.
exchange server is up and running and the same user is in outlook on his
workstation, no problems.

Plain Text vs HTML in exchange
Hi,
Suddenly I receive emails in plain text in where all images come as
attachments -- not part of email body.
When I reply, or forward it goes out as plain text.
In option mail format i have specified for outgoing mail is HTML.
Any idea how to fix this???

Fax Server on SBS 2003
We bought an 8 port fax modem and it all works well for all client OS except
Vista SP1. We have a few Vista machines but it never installs the network
fax printer off of the SBS 2003 server? IS there a workaround to do this?
I am assuming that Windows 2003 OS does not have the appropriate drivers for
the Vista Network printer - is this correct or logical assumption? What
would be the workaround? thanks. Tag: Find easy what you need for windows(98, ME, xp, vista) Tag: 394011
Anyone using AVG8 on their SBS box? Need some advise on which
While I wait for Grisoft to get back to me, I figured I'd get a faster
answer here.
Going to eval AVG8 since I've been using the free AVG for a few years
and am happy with it.
They have a version for "file servers" AND a version for "email
servers", but what I have is both. My server is for file/print and
email. Will the "email servers" version do both?
What I'm hoping for is a single product that protects the server,
gives me workstation software AND email scanning capabilities.
Hopefully AVG does this in 1 product otherwise I'll have to keep
searching. I think I evalled another product that worked that way.

Email Integration options? Moving users from pop3 Outlook express to
I'm getting ready to move my users (a whopping 4) from their old
environment of Outlook Express & pop3 to our SBS box with Exchange.
I need to deal with their old pop3 mail as they will want to retain it
and in one case (company owner) who has an extensive mailbox of
messages all tucked in folders on the sent and received side. No way
to get him to get rid of it.
I noticed while testing that my Outlook client noticed a OE account
and offered to import it.
What options are available to me? I guess I could import their pop3
accounts into outlook and that would give them access to their old
mail? Does it put it locally, or into the exchange store?
Are there any other options that I should be considering? Any good
links on email integration/upgrade I should be looking at?
Thanks,

My documents redirection error - Old server still trying to sync
Hi,
I've redirected to another server than the SBS 2003 box. Files have been
moved as they should everything seems to be working fine except for one
client that keeps popping up about computers being offline. The computer in
question is the SBS 2003 that is no longer storing the My documents for our
employees.
Any ideas on how to stop this error?
If I go to my explorer and choose Tools-Synchronize I only see the new
server as I should.
I guess that it's a registry error of some kind.

Problems with RWW and WSUS
Running SBS 2003 Premium, Exchange 2003, SQL 2000, ISA 2004, WSUS 3.0, WSS
3.0, 2-NIC's.
==============
Been chasing my tail the last week or so trying to get WSS, company web and
WSUS to all work at the same time. Still no luck so I thought I'd put out
the details and see if anyone has ideas that I can use to fix them.
WSUS - clients not reporting in. I got my PC in once I used dcomcnfg.
Haven't tried it yet on the other computers or servers. WSUS is retrieving
updates and notifying me - console works well. I suspect a
setup/permissions problem that bis related to the RWW problem.
I can access http://companyweb and http://<servername> fine (WSS 2.0 and WSS
3.0, respectively) fine.
Server Usage Report is not viewable; I get "Server Error in '/Monitoring'
Application".
http://<servername>/remote and http://<servername>/exchange both result in
HTTP 404 errors.
Nothing in Event Logs.
ISA 2004 BPA - no errors.
SBS BPA - Warning items: "Sharepoint instance does not use SQL Server 2000
SP4", and "STSVersion registry key is at RTM version"
In IIS Manager:

I did not install "fax service" on fresh SBS install but now I want
When I built my SBS box I elected to NOT install fax services. In
hindsight I think this was a mistake since it has been requested.
First let me ask the question.
If fax service was installed and running on SBS can my users FAX from
Exchange? What has been requested is that when sending an email some
recipients don't have email and do have fax machines. My users would
like to address email and fax users when composing an email and thus
have the fax only users receive this email via their fax machines.
Does the SBS fax service allow this capability?
If it does, Is there a way to go about installing fax services into
an already existing SBS install, and if so, how would I do this.
Thanks,
