I've just setup out new SBS 2003 R2 box and tried sending out some test
messages. The problem is they are getting routed to my boss' junk folder on
outlook 2007. He's got it set on the default
Low: Move the most...
with
Disable links...,
Warn about suspicous domains..., and
When sending email, Postmark...
checked at the bottom of the options page.

Any he hasn't listed our domain on his black list (that would be a weird
thing for the owner to do:)

So how can I figure out what's happening and make it stop. We really don't
want all our email to clients ending up in their junk folders!

We do not have a 3rd party certificate yet, I just had SBS create one.

Thanks

BTW I promise we are not a spammer. We will only be sending emails to real
customers.

Hi Scott:

It is not clear if you mean that the boss is receiving, and junking, your
mail while part of the SBS LAN, or if he is receiving them on his home
computer from some outside service, or ?.

If you are, for example, scott@company.com, joined to your SBS, and he is
boss@company.com, also joined to the SBS, and this is internal scott to boss
messages using exchange, that would be very strange indeed.

If, on the other had, you are scott@company.com and you are sending mail to
boss@otheraddress.com, which he is retrieving from his ISP with pop3, then
he has some trigger in his outlook that causes that. Could be that your
email domain is somehow on some black list somewhere.

If you are so inclined, send me a message from the same account and let me
see, and check for you.

It is scenario 2 scott@energyacuity.com -> boss@msn.com

Looks like I don't have the remote access working quite right, so can I send
you the email in the morning?

thanks

Hello Scott,

Thank you for your post and thanks for Larry's good clarification. :

My name is Robbin Meng, and it is my pleasure to work with you on this
issue!

Please allow me to confirm that my understandings are correct. As I
understand it, the issue is:

When users are sending emails from your energyacuity.com to other email
domain like msn.com, users would receive the new mails in Junk E-mail
instead of Inbox.

If I have misunderstood your concerns please feel free to let me know.

First, I would like to confirm with you that:

1. Does this issue only occur to MSN.com? Have you tried sending to other
emails domains like yahoo.com or hotmail.com?
Please try to send the email to other external recipient. What's the result?

2. Besides your boss email address, does this issue occur to all users
@msn.com?
If it occurs to all users @msn.com, the recipient email server mark the
email as junk, this may be the recipient email server issue.

If you can send email to other external recipient without problem, this may
be the recipient email server or client(your boss's email account setting)
issue. Please contact the recipient for assistance to confirm why it mark
your email as junk.

Based on my tests, the mail server of energyacuity.com is
mail.energyacuity.com and IP is 64.207.46.203, is that right? At least, the
result from the RBL website is good, it seems your mail server is not being
listed in Blacklist of public RBL organizations.

Multi-RBL check 64.207.46.203
http://www.robtex.com/rbl/64.207.46.203.html

Hope this helps. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not
hesitate to let me know.

Thank you for your time and cooperation!

Best regards,

Robbin Meng(MSFT)

Hi Scott:

Your mail server is not answering, and I cannot telnet to it. If this was
true when you sent the mail to boss@msn.com, MSN may test for that. The
rest of your public DNS records look ok.

Since your RWW was not working either, I wonder if you have configured your
router / firewall. The ports for RWW and mail should be forwarded to the
listening nic on your SBS. If you have two nics, that would be the one
attached to the router.

If you plan on VPN, you will need to add 1723, and if you want to RDP
directly to the server, 3389.

Larry and Robbin:
Thanks for your help on my email/junk problem. I opened up the firewall
ports as larry suggested and got outr ISP to update our MX record to point to
the same IP as our public web site.

That seems to have solved the problem with other domains except for msn.

So I can send mail to the Inbox for
me@energyacuity.com -> co_worker@gmail.com
me@energyacuity.com -> co_worker@mines.edu
me@energyacuity.com -> co_worker@du.edu
me@energyacuity.com -> co_worker@comcast.net

but messages
me@energyacuity.com -> co_worker@msn.com and
me@energyacuity.com -> my_boss@msn.com

end up in the junk folder. Both the msn accounts are setup with the default
low spam setting, and energyacuity.com isn't in the black list.

It's a mystery, but I suppose I can live with it if you don't have other
suggestions. I'll just add the energyacutiy.com into my boss' white list.

Thanks

One additional question. Is there a list of what ports should and should not
be opened in my firewall for an SBS installation? I tried doing the UPnP
setup for my firewall router and the CEICW failed and told me to rerun the
wizard and answer no. So I've got to do a manual setup.

Thanks

Hi Scott:

The mail you sent to my personal address was received. Strangely, Mail
Washer Pro, using the ORDB database flagged you as Blacklisted. Not to
worry, the ORDB database has been off line for a couple of years and it
flags everybody as Blacklisted. But if MSN has some link to this block list
that might explain the problem.

Your public DNS records look much better, and I can telnet to the server at
"mail.yourcompny.com" so you should be receiving mail.

The ports are:

Hi Scott,

Glad to hear from you and know the information is helpful. :-)

Considering the issue had been resolved, for the purpose to help other
people to get help from our experience, I would like to make a summary
here. If you have any further concern regard to this issue, feel free to
let me know.

Problem Description:
===================
Outbound emails are being delivered to exteranl users' Junk folder instead
of Inbox

Cause:
===================
Wrong network configuration and DNS records

Resolution:
===================
Opened up the firewall ports
ISP update MX record to point to the same IP as public web site.

Regarding your concern about what ports should and should not be opened in
my firewall for an SBS installation, I'd like you have a look at the
