They are all a variation of this:

Software Installation failed due to the error listed below.

The system cannot find the path specified.

Additional information may have been logged. Review the Policy Events
tab in the console or the application event log for events between
6/26/2008 1:56:18 PM and 6/26/2008 1:56:18 PM.

In short, the only bit of software I have a policy install is the User
Hive Cleanup tool. By the error given you'd think that the workstation
couldn't get to the installer.

However browsing via UNC gets me there with no qualms. So I figured
maybe the network isn't 'ready' yet.. so I set a policy to 'wait for
network'.

This is the same machine that earlier in the week I posted about it's
refusal to get GPO's from the server. Now that that got 'fixed' (by
itself no less) this is the last of my current problems with it.

FWIW I ran the .msi right from the same UNC path the policy holds and
installed the Hive cleanup tool no problem.

Hello Ryan,

Thank you for posting here.

According to your description, I understand that you want to deploy User
Hive Cleanup tool to clients thru group policy, but get error 101, 103 and
108 on one client. If I have misunderstood the problem, please don't
hesitate to let me know.

First I want to know the following information:

1. Does this issue happen on all clients or individual client?
2. Do you run SBS 2003 as DC?

Based on my research, I suggest we try the following steps to see if we can
resolve this issue:

1. Folder redirection and software installation policies will be bypassed
if your enable Fast Logon on the client. Please ensure you disable Fast
Logon on the client.

To turn off Fast Logon Optimization, you can use the following local policy
setting on the client:
Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Logon\ Always wait
for the network at computer startup and logon

2. NetBIOS over TCP/IP Service is disabled on the client will also cause
this issue.

a. Open Control Panel -> Network Connections on client
b. Right click network interface, select properties
c. Double click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
d. Click Advanced button
e. Select WINS tab, select Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP
f. Click Ok three times.

3. Make sure "Client for Microsoft Networks" and "File and Printer Sharing
for Microsoft Networks" options are ticked on the client and SBS's Network
Card properties dialog box.

4. Run command "services.msc" on client and SBS to open services console.
Ensure service 'TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper' is enabled on client and SBS.

5. I suggest you use the 'Client Application Wizard' on SBS to deploy
application to client:
=====================================

a. Create a server share and store client application on this server share.
Set at least read & execute permission to proper users.
b. Open Server Management and Click Client Computers node
c. Click 'Setup Click Applications' links in the right panel
d. In the available application page, please click Add
e. Input Click Application Name, such as "Client Application #1". Click
'Browse' and locate the application package. It could be exe file, msi file
or other executable file. Finish the wizard.
f. Click 'Assign application to Client computers' link
g. In the Client Computers page of this wizard, choose the computer that
you want to apply the application and click Add. Add all computers you want.
h. In the Client applications page, please confirm that "Client application
#1" is checked. Finished Wizard.
i. On the client computers, log off and log on again to apply the
application

However, with this method, a shortcut for your customized application will
be put on the client computer desktop when they logon, instead of
installing directly. This is exactly a design of "Assign application" to
give the users a period of time to prepare their client computers before
the installation begins.

6. If the issue persists, I suggest you delete your application deploy
group policy and recreate it test this issue. You can perform the following
steps in the KB:

How to assign software to a specific group by using Group Policy in Windows
Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=324750

If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the steps above, please
help me collect some information for further investigation:

1. Run command "ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig_client.txt" on problematic
client, send the files c:\ipconfig_client.txt to me at
v-terliu@microsoft.com

2. Run command "gpresult /v > c:\gpresult_client.txt" on problematic
client, send the files c:\gpresult_client.txt to me at
v-terliu@microsoft.com

3. Save the application event log and system event log as evt files on the
problematic client and send to my mailbox: v-terliu@microsoft.com

4. Gather MPS network report on SBS:

a. Download MPSrepot_network from
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE

b. Run MPSRPT_NETWORK.exe.

c. The tool will automatically collect the information. This procedure will
take 10~15 minutes.

d. Open Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder:
%SystemRoot%\MPSReports\Network\Reports\Cab\

e. Send the .cab file directly to me at v-terliu@microsoft.com

I hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu (MSFT)

Both of these seem to be ok. My NetBIOS setting is set to the Default
which is set to get NetBIOS from the DHCP server. I have the
appropriate NetBIOS config on my DHCP server options.

Exactly. I do not want to give the user the option to install it as
they never will.

Hello Ryan,

Thank you for your update. I'm sorry for the delay response due to the
weekend.

From your reply I want to confirm that:

1. Please try to apply the policy to another client. Does the issue reoccur?

2. What do you mean by "I've had this feature set since day 1"? What is
"day 1"? Do you turn off Fast Logon on the client?

3. How about my suggestions 2#, 4# and 6#? You did not reply those.

If all the steps unable to help you to resolve the issue, please help me to
gather the information I mentioned in my previous reply for further
investigation.

I appreciate your time and look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu (MSFT)
