Hi

I'm using Small Business Server 2003. At 3 am this morning, my
MSSQL$Sharepoint service stopped running and the server restarts by itself,
most probably due to an update. And this morning when I came to work, I
discovered that when I try to access http://companyweb/, I receive the
"Cannot connect to the configuration database." error message. I followed
KB823287 and KB833183, but still couldn't access the website. I managed to
ping, nslookup, and even login to the SQL server successfully.

I checked my Events Log, and discovered that the Event 1000 Windows
SharePoint Services 2.0 Error appeared almost every 5 seconds. The error
description reads, "#50070: Unable to connect to the database STS_Config on
servername\MICROSOFT##SSEE. Check the database connection information and
make sure that the database server is running."

Besides, it sometimes accompanied with a 18456 Failure Audit, which reads,
"The description for Event ID ( 18456 ) in Source ( MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE )
cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry
information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer.
You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see
Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event:
NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE, [CLIENT: <named pipe>]."

What can I do? Please advise, thank you.

Hi, there is a known issue with one of the recent MS updates that
patches SQL Server instances (Companyweb uses SQL). MS are recommending
holding off installing it for now. Check out the below links:

http://simultaneouspancakes.com/Lessons/2008/07/09/kb948110-and-sharepoint/

And this one which tells you what to do if it is already installed:

In case that last link dies here is what it says
-----------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATED: Hold Off on Installing Hotfix 948110 on SBS 2003 Servers
We have received a few reports of hotfix 948110 causing issues with
SharePoint (Companyweb) on SBS 2003. At this time please hold off on
installing this patch on your SBS 2003 server. Installing this hotfix may
prevent the SharePoint WMSDE instance from starting. We are currently
investigating the issue and will update this blog post as soon as possible.

Update 1:

If you have already installed this hotfix AND the MSSQL$SHAREPOINT service
is not starting you can perform the following steps to fix this service.

1.. Rename C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$SHAREPOINT\Binn to
Binn.old
2.. Restore C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$SHAREPOINT\Binn
from a backup taken previous to installing hotfix 948110. If you do not
have a backup try using volume shadow copy.
3.. Start the MSSQL$SHAREPOINT service
4.. Test CompanyWeb
This should fix CompanyWeb. If you go to Windows Update you will once again
be offered update 948110, do not install this update for the time being.

I have restored the bin folder, but I still get the HTTP/1.1 404 Connection:
close Date: Thu, 10 Jul 2008 09:10:00 GMT Server:
Microsoft-IIS/6.0 MicrosoftSharePointTeamServices: 12.0.0.4518 X-Powered-By:
ASP.NET message. I think it's because I ran the SharePoint Products and
Technologies Wizard before. And now, if I visit http://servername, another
SharePoint website appears.
What can I do to undo my error?
