I'm getting ready to move my users (a whopping 4) from their old
environment of Outlook Express & pop3 to our SBS box with Exchange.

I need to deal with their old pop3 mail as they will want to retain it
and in one case (company owner) who has an extensive mailbox of
messages all tucked in folders on the sent and received side. No way
to get him to get rid of it.

I noticed while testing that my Outlook client noticed a OE account
and offered to import it.

What options are available to me? I guess I could import their pop3
accounts into outlook and that would give them access to their old
mail? Does it put it locally, or into the exchange store?

Are there any other options that I should be considering? Any good
links on email integration/upgrade I should be looking at?

Thanks,

Roveer

When setting up their Outlook use "cached" mose. that will give them offline
capabilities as well as having a copy on the Exchange server. Import their
OE file into their Outlook profile.

You can import the mailbox content into Outlook, but if you're going to
continue to use POP3, I recommend using the connector in SBS. Configure the
Outlook profiles to use the Exchange Server mailbox, and don't configure POP
in Outlook. Then just go to the Server Mgmt. Console on the SBS and
configure that to pick up the messages from the POP mailboxes.

You may have to re-run the CEICW to configure e-mail if that hasn't been
done already. If so, just choose the "do not change" option for anything
that doesn't apply.

Hi,

Lanwench will tell you not to 'Import' into Outlook/Exchange as corruption
is common when importing. Instead, copy the email/contact data etc into
Exchange. I've no idea why the corruption occurs but the lady's an Exchange
MVP, I'm not and I'm all for taking good advice from someone who knows
better than me - Exchange is something I would not want to reinstall for the
sake of an extra hours work.

Regards Colin.

Don't do that - if you *must* continue to use POP, at least do it from the
server.

It should go to Exchange. Don't use any PST files.

Also - never import data in Outlook - always export from the source app.
Create the Outlook profile first. Then launch OE and use File | export.
Otherwise all the time/datestamps will change on his messages, which will
annoy him.

Note that if he has a LOT of old mail, you may not want to bring it in.
Everyone should have quotas (even the business owner) and if he starts out
with a 3GB mailbox ....well, it ain't going to work well for long. Perhaps
his data should be temporarily brought into his mailbox & then put in a
public folder for his access. Or it could be backed up to a DVD and given to
him for safekeeping. Sure, he can save everything forever - as long as he
has the hardware, software, backup/restore & technical resources to support
that request. Most small offices don't.

Import their email into their company Exchange/Outlook profile.

Setup the POP3 Connector to pull email from their pop3 accounts every 8
hours.

Make their POP3 account MX record a level 20, keep their Exchange server
DNS (Public) email record as a level 10. This will allow email to be
stored on their POP3 account when the SBS server is down, and when SBS
comes back online it will automatically pull the pop3 emails to their
Exchange accounts.

I've done this thousands of times, using Outlook to import a PST file
from a POP account into Exchange via Outlook import and never once had a
problem. Maybe I'm just dang lucky.

Yes, you're lucky. :-)
