    - WSUS 3.0 Install I am installing WSUS 3.0 on our SBS 2003 SP1 and was following the http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=92399 document for installing on SBS, but it seems incomplete. This is not an upgrade from any other version of WSUS and I havn't used WSUS before, so I may be missing something. The document says to cancel the wizard and skips to trouble shooting without any setup/configuration instructions. I'm not sure what I need to do next, is there more to this document somewhere?     - Stay with SBS 2003 or move to server 2003 std. ed.? Hi everyone, I need some opinions on when to migrate to Server 2003 Standard Ed. I just started with a company and inherited a network currently running SBS 2003 with exchange (setup for public email use), 20 users, and about 12 member servers running SQL 2000 and some custom apps. Durring a planning meeting, I found out that our company plans to exceed 50 people in the next two years. I know that SBS only supports concurrent 50 users. The funny thing is that active directory isn't being utilized other then for exchange (none of the client computers are joined to the SBS domain). So again, as I plan our structure for the future; I can't help but wonder if I shouldn't drop SBS NOW and implement Server 2003 Standard or enterprise. But then again, I don't know how time consuming it would be to migrate once we exceed 50 users. Not to mention that we are going to open several branch offices.     - POP3 connector Hi evrybody I have a little question about the POP3 Connecteur. I configure a SBS Std R2 for a client this week. I use the POP3 connecteur for the mail, cause my client doesn't have a domain name for the mail, he use the domain of the FAI ( like @yahoo.com for exemple) So, in sbs i create a user (myuser), so the mail of my user is myuser@mydomain.com and i create configure the pop connecteur to send check the mail like mister.user@fai.com to myuser@mydomain.local. It works very well. But now, when my user send mail, there contact receive a mail from myuser@fai.com. there a mix with the name of the user in AD with the doamin of the FAI. When i reply, the mail doesn't work cause the mail adress doesn't exist in the FAI. What can i do to correct this probleme and have the good adress when he send mail?? (Sorry my english was not good.     - Exchange Issues Our SBS box crashed last week and while I thought all was well after hours and hours of recovery, I am still experiencing problems. The latest problem is with Exchange. I was noticing that I would get regular email notifications (the pop up) and then when I would look for the mail, it was gone. At first, I thought nothing of it and that I was losing it. But I kept seeing it happen. I finally logged in to the Remote Web Workplace and the emails I was missing are there, but not in my Outlook on my PC. It makes no sense!!!     - TCP Chimney, TCPS and Task Offloading I re3cently ran the SBS 2003 BEst Practices Analyzer and had theses four Issues Reddexed! Receive Side Scaling; Task Offloading; TCP Chimney and TCPA. All are enabled, by default I must assume, and I am told to tur them off. Can anyone in English explain what they are and why it is better for them to be off?     - SBS 2003 upgrade to R2 I have a customer that has SBS 2003 premium. Is it possible to upgrade an existing SBS 2003 to R2, they are going to need SQL 2005 Workgroup edition and I believe it comes with that I could be wrong correct me if I am.     - Freezes We have SBS 2003 running here. I can provide specs if necessary. We are a design firm. Digital design. We have about 16 WinXP machines running on the network. With 5 file shares through the SBS. When someone is saving a file everyone connected freezes for about minutes. It is sporatic which is frustrating because it is not consistant.     - Fax problems - Unable to answer as Fax call Hi Guys, On a server I maintain, the fax seems to have stopped functioning - giving the error 'Unable to answer as a fax call'. I tried swapping out the internal modem for a USB US robotics modem and I'm still getting a problem. Could this be a line fault or am I doing something wrong?     - RWW Download Connection Manager Link broken When connecting to the RWW from a non public system and trying to download and install the connection manager receive page can't be displayed error.     - Deny Simultaneous Logins to All Users EXCEPT Admin? Windows 2000 Small Business Server With Windows XP Pro Workstations I am using roaming profiles and folder redirections. I want to restrict individual users to only one (1) login on one PC at any given time (no simultaneous logins by any given user).     - Trend Micro CSM for SMB Vulnerability scan issue? Do any of you folks have any familiarity with this product? I've got two machines that are popping up in the vulnerability report for a patch that is 3 years old now. I know for a fact both of the machines (my own machine) and a newly deployed machine have this patch installed. Trend is giving me a Critical Threat Level for these (3 bars). This is the vulnerability: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS05-004.mspx I even re-applied the patches via a downloadable executable and re- scanned the machines and the report doesn't change. What's odd though is that none of the other machines have this problem, and they are all deployed via the same Windows XP SP2 CD with connection to my WSUS 3 server. I called Trend Micro and they said that the vulnerability scan checks the windows version number to assess threats.     - Exchange w/ no PTR and Smart Host Setup? I'm having some problems with mail sticking in Queue for recipients from AOL and a few other places. Using google, it seems that it's a problem since my IP address doesn't have reverse DNS. I'm willing to accept that fact, as I doubt my provider will give one up. So I'm checking into smart hosts. My question to you professionals is this: Is using an SMTP smart host simply passing the outbound email off to an external provider, such as the company whom hosts our webpage, which also provides pop/smtp email access? In short: If I put my web hosts smtp address in the smart host box, and in the outgoing authentication box put in an appropriate login for pop/smtp authentication is this all that is required?     - WSS3 Backup Jop on SBS 2003 Hi I have WSS3 installed on SBS2003 following the instructions to keep WSS2, but my backup job fails. I think it is trying to backup the WSS2 site (as it is talking about port 80). Object SharePoint - 80 failed in event OnPrepareBackup.     - DNS and RWW Connection Issues What exactly does the DNS do that could affect the RWW connection to a PC. I had an issue yesterday that a user couldn't connection RWW to his PC. I check all connections and made sure the PC was on. I left the issue for a couple of hours and came back to only find that the RWW connection now works.     - VPN and ping/Oracle problem Trying to use a PPTP vpn on a SBS 2003 using ISA 2000. I can vpn in. I can \\SBSservername and see shares. I can \\oracleserver and see shares. I cannot ping the SBS or Oracle. I cannot connect to the Oracle database. Support says I need to be able to ping first. I make a pptp vpn to my office running SBS 2003 and ISA 2004 and I can ping the server. So the question is this. What click do I need to do at the customer office that will allow ping to the servers? ISA 2000 is a lot less restrictive than ISA 2004. XP Pro clients but that should not be relevant.     - Volume License Key Question? I have a new client that purchased a volume license key via Dell for SBS 2003 R2 Standard (T72-01675) and 5 additional cals (T74-00245). I called to register the authoirization number and license agreement number and I was sent an email with 2 Product Keys so I am thinking all looks good. Since the only purchase was for volume keys and no media I used media I had from another installation (this media was from a retail box of the same thing) figuring I just use the new keys from the volume license, but no go.     - Slow Logon It seems that my 2 clients are experiencing slow logons. I am using folder redirection (Desktop & Documents) only. I am using roaming profiles.     - NT4 with Exchange 5.5 to SBS2003 R2 using ADMT Hi, I have a customer who wants me to do their migration from NT4 to SBS2003 R2. Since I've never done it and I've lived on an NT4 domain for the last nine years (don't fix what aint broke), I took the opportunity to use my own domain as the guinea pig for a test migration. I found the ADMT help lacking but, I was successful migrating the domain. I actually spent several months sort of pregnant but duplicating the users and key group, syncronizing the new sbs file server with the old file server and then mapping user on the old dome to shares on the new domain. The only snag with that was security which I was able to address.     - DHCP? Hi All, I have one SBS2003 Premium Server and 2 clients. I also have a Westell327 Verizon DSL Router. I have set the router up NOT to assign IP address. I use static IP's for the server and the 2 clients. Do I need to have the DHCP service running on the Server? I noticed it is trying to do some funky things with one of my client XP machines. I can see one of my clients in a pool with a different IP than what I assigned it but when checking the client it has the IP I assigned.     - Need help with determining what the problem is so I can fix it Hello i've got an odd one I was hoping I could get some assistance with, This customer has 10 new xp pro computers and 1 sbs2k3 server that I installed. They rely on PaperPort for their document/pdf/scanning management. Several times a week when copying or renaming a file within paperport, it freezes. When it freezes on this users system it takes down every application for every user on the network, with the normal unable to open file type of error. I unplug her system from the network thinking it is the source of the problem or interference, this does not change anything. Here's where it gets wierd. Even though none of the applications will run, I can still access the mapped drive and copy and paste items from it. I can ping the server and bring up the internet. Outlook remains connected and recieves mail fine. However, no network applications will work. With performance monitor running on the server I can see the number of open files go from 170 down to 0 immediately following the paperport crash. In task manager on the server my processor is normal and below 15%, ram and virtual memory are normal, there are no tasks eating up the processor. There are no events in the event log relating to any type of problem. I disconnect the server from the network and attempt to rename the folder (via win explorer) that the user was copying when paperport crashed, I cannot rename it explorer essentially freezes. Only a reboot of the server will bring the network back to its normal state. My question is this: What performance monitoring counters would you recommend I watch to determine why the server is not processing requests? (I can't seem to determine to what it's not processing since the mapped drives are still up and running, and outlook is as well) (please omit the default counters, current drive queue length, ,active connections and open files) When a workstation copys a folder from the server to another directory on the server and the workstation crashes in the middle of the copy, what process or service running on the Server would be effected by the workstation crashing? Theoretically If I can see the files on a mapped drive without any problems but when I go to open those files in any app (word,excel,adobe,etc) and the app freezes without any errors what would this be indicitive of? (assuming of course it's not a permission problem, I can open said docs locally on my workstation, and after a server reboot those files open fine) It seems the server is detecting a partial copy or corrupt file and for some reason this is taking the server down. Oh there is one important thing I forgot to mention, they were having the same exact problem on another server before I installed the sbs2k3. Also, all workstations have been replaced with no results. I am absolutely positive this is a paperport specific issue (sorry, and yes I have posted in the paperport newsgroup as well).     - Redirection Problem SBS 2003 R2 Standard. I had redirection turned on. I did not like how it worked, so I created Home drives manually, setup permissions and mapped a drive to the new location. A script then copies various files form the client machines to the server when a user logs on. This appears to be working, except for the following: A. User logs on and opens Excel, the from within Excel, opens a document - opens quickly. B. User double-clicks a desktop shortcut to the same document and it takes at least a minute to open. I think it is related to the redirection getting messed up. If I disconnect the drive mapped to their documents, the file will open quickly either way (A or B). When the drive is mapped, and trying B it appears to be doing something on the mapped drive, like looking for redirected files. This user is connecting remotely via a DSL connection and is very noticeable. When looking at the properties of a couple of these documents, the "start in" folder was pointing to the old \\servername\username redirected file, where the file no longer exists. I corrected this, but it does not help. Excel is just an example, it does the same thing with Word, Adobe, or Access documents. Any ideas? Tag: Desktop Files on Server? Tag: 387504

    - Laptop randomnly dropping wifi signal - any ideas? Hi guys, I have a laptop on a SBS network, for some reason it keeps randomly dropping the network - I am not entirely sure what is going on, but it seems to keep losing the wireless access key. I have another laptop on the same network which is, however, still connecting fine. Both laptops are XP, using the same wifi point, and both users have the same permissions level. The key is being assigned locally rather than via any policies - could this be the issue and if so how do I configure to automatically provide the wireless key, as this could resolve quite a few problemos!     - Roaming Profiles and Redirected Folders Inconsistent I'm Running Windows 2000 Small Business Server as a PDC/DC/AD, DNS, and Terminal Server with a Windows 2003 Server running DHCP, DNS, and File Server. Clients are Windows XP Pro. On the W2K SBS, I set the default policy to include folder redirection of the users' "My Documents", etc. folders. In AD, I set the users profiles to be redirected (different path, same server, W2K3) as well. The redirection is not working consistently. I've had cases where a user logs in from one computer and their folders are redirected. The same user goes to another computer and logs in - the folders are NOT redirected. It is "hit and miss" as to whether the folders/profiles are redirected or not. What should I check to diagnose and fix these problems? What needs to be changed? Tag: Desktop Files on Server?     - Using DHCP to separate activity? Is it possible, within Windows DHCP (Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2), to specify a range for wired clients and a separate range for wireless clients? Background: a small organization, two servers (both domain controllers), one running DHCP. Client systems connected to this network fall in three categories: 1. Permanently wired desktop systems for office workers, members of the domain. 2. Wireless notebook systems for office workers, members of the domain. 3. Guest laptops needing Internet connectivity only, not members of the domain, wirelessly connected. All three client types will be getting their addresses from DHCP. I was thinking of disabling DHCP services on the wireless router (Linksys) altogether. I wanted to specify a range of IP's, perhaps even on a different subnet for the wireless clients to keep them as separated as possible from the domain. Then create reservations for the couple of laptops that are domain members, assuming that would supercede whatever rules could be established to force wireless guests to a different range/subnet. I'm supporting a VERY small, non-profit organization with not much of a budget for this kind of work. Most of the equipment I have at my disposal is either old, borrowed, or was obtained cheaply/free. Labor to design and implement whatever I come up with will be donated. Sparing me the "you get what you pay for" anecdotes...what's the most efficient way to accomplish separating guest wireless connections that need Internet access only, from legitimate office workers on both wired desktops and wireless laptops? I cringe at the idea of trusting the Linksys router for network security, but perhaps I'll need to do that if I can't separate things out a little via DHCP. Perhaps DHCP is not the tool to attempt isolation/segregation with. But GPO's/IPsec will only apply to members of the domain and guests will only interact with resources on the LAN at the level of the router and DHCP server. I don't have too many other options right now. The only networking equipment I have at my disposal is A) a DSL modem, B) a wireless Linksys router, and C) a small 6-8 port switch with little to no onboard intelligence (doubtful any VLAN capabilities).     - Poor Fax Line Quality? OK, I need some advice here. I have a new SBS 2003 Standard install that is using the faxing capabilities. The users are reporting they are having faxing problems. When I look at the incoming logs I see alot of "poor line quality" or "the machine did not respond in time" errors. On the outgoing logs things look much more normal. This occurs in about 1/3 of all incoming faxes. I changed out the modem and put in an USR modem on the HCL and still have the same issues so it's not the modem. I even watched the monitoring as a fax came in and I did notice that it took about 2-3 minutes to transfer 1 page and for what the content was on this page that took way too much time. Before this the user was using a standard fax machine with no reported problems so I'm a little stumped here short of getting verizon involved in looking at the line.     - Sharepoint Extranet disabled RWW Scenario: I've setup an extranet site on SBS03. When I applied SSL certificate to it, I can no longer access the RWW and OWA sites. Before I did this, I had not problems. Setup: https://file.domain.com goes to sharepoint extranet https://file.domain.com/remote userd to work, but no longer does. This is the tool set that replaces the adminpack.msi tools pack for XP. Vista SP1 is required.     - Exchange Users Although we only have a limited number of SBS users, we are quickly running out of Exchange managed mailboxes.     - NTFRS 13552 and 13555 Erorrs on SBS 2003 Following Tornado I'm running SBS 2003 Premium w/sp2 (not R2). A few weeks back, we were hit by the tornado that came through Atlanta and the server sustained a shutdown due to power events that overwhelmed our APC UPS. Following the event, I'm now getting several NTFRS 13552 and 13555 errors in my SBS event log. The FRS error status is FrsErrorMismatchedJournalId. I've done a good bit of research on these errors, but I'd like to get some feedback from the SBS gang to correct the issue. Currently, the FRS service will start, but it will post these errors in the event log. The SYSVOL and NETLOGON shares are functioning properly and the users can login just fine on the network. Also, my SBS Group Policies are working fine. I do not have any other domain controllers, but I do have one member server running MS-Windows 2003 Server w/sp2. Symantec AV is set to exclude the necessary folders from realtime scanniing like SYSVOL. I do also have a good backup of the SystemState from before the store with Veritas Backup Exec 9.1. What would be the best recommendation to correct this issue. I'm guessing that I can perform a non-authoritative restore using my backups of the SystemState, but I'd like to try the baby steps first.     - SBS Backup & NAS devices This is SBS 2003 R2 Premium. On the LAN we have two NAS devices. One (A) is not joined to the Domain but can be accessed via the LAN. It has a list of authorised users and is setup so the user Administrator can access all areas. The other (B) has been joined to the domain, and uses the domain users for access control. Again Administrator can access all areas. If we use the Backup wizard and configure it to backup to A and a specific folder, it then runs quite happily (if a little slowly) and the backup files duly appear (until it runs out of space!!). If we use the Backup Wizard and configure it to backup to B and a specfic folder (with the same access privileges as A) and then run it, the process creates the sub-folder "Backup Files" (as it does above), but then fails unable to access the folder. At this point there is an empty file in Backup Files and it wont let me look at it as I (Administrator) dont have sufficient privileges. I've tried changing the ownership permissions of both the file and the folder but it still wont allow me to access the file or delete it. I have a brand new, fresh install of SBS (brought current settings over via a swing migration, had no issues that I can identify with that). I have rebuilt the server completely a few times, so I can pretty much rule out a bad install. At the end of the SBS Setup, I get the error: "An error occurred while creating user accounts. I have no idea what has happend but its become quite a problem.

A few days ago, I used remote desktop to connect to our server
(terminal services) and upon connecting I noticed all the icons/files
from my local machine's desktop were now on my desktop of the server.
I minimize the session to see that the icons/files that I had on the
server desktop are now on my local machine's desktop. As if they were
now mirrored.

Not thinking too much about it, I went back on the server and deleted
the files so that only my server desktop items remained. Upon logging
off and returning to my local machine I noticed now that my normal
desktop icons were gone from my local machine. I looked everywhere for
them but they were completely gone.

I have heard of sharing Printers and Drives with remote desktop, and
those settings can be turned on and off. But I do not see anything
about my desktop.

Specs:
Local Machine: Windows Vista Buisness
Server: Windows 2003 SBS R2
Group Policy: Desktop and My Documents stored on server

You logged onto the server with your username and password rather than
administrator, correct?

If so you must have had roaming profile on, so of course if you deleted your
files they will disappear as where you are currently logged in, is where you
profile is loaded.
