Hi All,

I have one SBS2003 Premium Server and 2 clients. I also have a Westell327
Verizon DSL Router. I have set the router up NOT to assign IP address. I use
static IP's for the server and the 2 clients.

Do I need to have the DHCP service running on the Server? I noticed it is
trying to do some funky things with one of my client XP machines. I can see
one of my clients in a pool with a different IP than what I assigned it but
when checking the client it has the IP I assigned.

If no, do I disable from the DHCP window on the Server or do I disable the
service from starting??

Hi J. M. De Moor,

I see in the DHCP window an option to "DELETE"........should I do that or
just stop the service from starting via the services window?

Don't delete anything you may need some day. Just stop the service.
Then change the Startup setting to Disabled.

DHCP does more than most people think. It is not just for handing out IP
addresses. It is also responsible for dynamic DNS updates for your LAN's
reverse lookup zone.

DHCP should be enabled on your server, not in a router. Even if you have
static IP addresses on member servers and/or workstations, they use their
own DHCP service to do dynamic DNS updates to the SBS server.

Your client showing in the pool with a different IP could be an old record
it got before you made the workstation static.

I'll never understand why so many people will not let SBS do the jobs it
does SO WELL.

Are you using two NICs with Premium, or just one NIC?

Dont stop the service, keep the static IPs on the clients if you want to
(not recomended by me and others) and If ypur IP shows up, It either an old
lease or If i missunderstand, you have assigned an IP static thats also
shared from your DHCP, If thats the case, just exclude this sepcific IP in
your DHCP. do believe Its the first option of an old lease still kept in
your DHCP and that will go away after the lease time expires.

You are right, of course.

If cornered, however, I would rather see a potentially useful service
disabled than removed. Hate to install any service from a disk after a
server has gone through months or even years of patching.

Agreed on that :-)
