    - Sharing folders via intranet site Hi Guys, Sorry if this seems a dumb question, but how can I add my shared folders as document libraries. By default my fax folder is availble, However, I have a folder called scanned images and I want this also to be available from my documents and lists page.     - Set GPO for specific user group hi all, We have a user group defined for certain folks who connect via RWW only, who need certain policies applied: 1. Force logoff after idle 2. Change IE homepage from company web 3. Specific file/folder auditing I created a new OU and GPO (setting just the IE homepage for now), linked the GPO to the OU, set teh OU to the group, verified the new GPO is the first item in the OU Precedence list. The IE homepage is still set to companyweb for the users in the group (applied via Default Domain Policy). Then I set the OU to Block Inheritance, but still no joy. What am I missing or doing wrong?     - backup and restore HI all, I had a system lose a couple of harddrives and had to restore data that had been backed up using the backup utility with SBS. When we restored we can't find the backup of the my documents redirect folder anywhere. My understanding was the backup backed up everything except what we have excluded.We didn't exclude this as far as we know.When the backup shows it is doing a shadow copy of the partition and then a regular backup. Is there a different place we need to be lookingat on the tape.     - SBS 2003 xp pro clients losing network shares I did post this some time ago, but the problem is still occuring. We're seeing a strange problem .... SBS 2003 r2 approx 10 XP Pro clients. They have applications that look at Netbios names to run... eg. sage etc. they look for \\sbs . They work fine for hours and then all of a sudden they stop, and if you do \\sbs to see the shares all it shows is the offline redirected my documents. If you do \\sbs.domain.local then they sometimes appear, but often it fails. It takes a reboot of the server AND the workstations to get everything working again. Have run dcdiag and netdiag and it passes all tests except that Messenger service isnt running. I've tried an entry for the server in the hosts file but that doesn't help. Clients are all dhcp node type 0x8 which I believe is hybrid. WINS/NBNS and DNS Server ip's are handed out over dhcp too. This is causing major pain for my customer so any help is greatly appreciated. Follow up on this... Last week we fitted a new NIC and it was ok until this morning... about 6 days.... then the problem reappeared.... What we're also seeing now is that even trying \\sbs.domain.local , ie. dns name is not finding the shares either. However if you ping with \\sbs or \\sbs.domain.local it finds the ip and responds even after an ipconfig /flushdns. It does sound very similar to http://blogs.technet.com/sbs/archive/2008/01/30/sbs-clients-lose-access-to-shares-and-or-cannot-get-dhcp-addresses.aspx but the Symantec s/w is DEFINATELY NOT installed, so its not that, though the problem seems very similar. The NBTSTAT -A is the same from a client when it's all fine AND when they have the problem. Theres nothing in the event logs that would indicate the source of the problem.     - Fax Console will not refresh automatically Hi i have a SBS 2003 installation , i am using the build in fax server feature. Everything is working fine but on two of my clients XP pro SP2 , the fax console will not refresh automatically , instead the user hat to click F5 to refresh. I have read some of Les's posts but they were followed with posts that appear as though the problem still exists? Its quite frustrating as the reports work for a number of days, then the SBSMonitoring page gets emailed and then it works again the following days with no intervention.     - SBS2003, dual nics, no router, Install Barracuda 300 Hello, We have been using SBS2003 in the dual nic configuration and would like to try a Barracuda Spam Filter. Current set up is: Internet DSL Modem (static IP)-SBS2003 Internal Network (10.0.x.x) Since I don't have a router, I do believe this makes things a little more challanging. Is it difficult to set up ISA2004 to forward port 25 to an interal address address that would be assigned to the Barracuda, then have the Barracuda 300 process the mail and forward back to the internal address of the server or would it need to go to the external IP address.     - EFS File Share Help Im trying to use EFS and CA to encrypt data on a remote file Share. Im having problems. Encryption is working on the File Share(Server) but its using Self Signed Keys when using a remote machine(Workstation) and copy a file to the Share. Also when I encrypt the file on the Share as Admin and try to share it using the authorized users and select the Key for my Workstation user and Verify the Fingerprints Match. The workstation cannot decrypt the file. I know the Self signed key is on the Share(Server) Because When I encrypt locally on the Workstation it uses the Key that was assigned by the CA. Another problem... I really cannot use roaming profiles. Long story it just wont work in my situation. All im looking for is a Shared folder to be encrypted and accessible by multiple users. the CA was originally intended for SSL but I figured this could work too.     - Windows update Not sure why, but recently Windows Update is rebooting my server at night after an update. In XP it is clear where to turn this setting off but I don't know where it is located on the SBS server. Can someone help?     - Installing an existing GoDaddy SSL on another SBS box.... This is probably a dumb question; I'm pretty much an IIS moron. But I've got a functional GoDaddy SSL cert installed and working on my own SBS box...and I'm now moving that server to new hardware (well, technically, I'm rebuilding it in a virtual server). It's a pretty vanilla install so far. When I first ran the CEICW I just entered a bogus / placeholder self-signed SSL cert - I now want to replace it with my real one so it's ready to go when I do my cutover. I installed the intermediate certificate properly, and then re-ran the CEICW to install the main cert, thinking that would simply work, silly me! I got an error that there was no pending request for the default website (there wasn't, of course) so I prepared one. I did this by following the "official SBS Blog" instructions, which are what I'd followed to order the cert in the first place - I created a new website using the appropriate host.domain.com name & got the certreq.txt generated. The CEICW still wouldn't let me install the existing CRT file - same error. I then tried removing the existing request from host.domain.com and running the same request on the *default* website. Same error; no dice. Abandoning the CEICW, I ran through the SBS blog instructions again & recreated host.domain.com and prepared a new request. Then tried to go through & assign the .crt file. That yielded "The pending request for this response file was not found. This request my be canceled. You cannot install selected response certificate using this Wizard" I tried copying the certreq.txt from my existing server to the new one to see if that made any difference - no dice. When I've gotten third party certs before I've always created the certreq.txt file on the server & run through it with the SSL cert provider at ordering time - it's always worked fine that way. However, I've never done anything like this after I've already *got* a valid certificate and want to install it on a new box. Q1: Do I have to go back to GoDaddy to get a new one issued for download, just as though I'd never done this before? Q2: Will that do anything bad to my existing, working SSL cert on the as-of-yet production server? I haven't run into this at a client site yet, but I'm sure it can and will happen, and I'd like to know what the proper procedures are so I don't show them what an IIS moron I am. Help!     - svchost 100% CPU is back! I rolled out the latest updates that Microsoft put out on the 13th, and a couple of computers on the network have the high cpu usage bug. Originally, i have read about the issue but none of the computers were effected by this. My set up is SBS 2003 SP1 with WSUS 2 SP2. Can the reason for this be that I still use WSUS 2.0?     - VPN error 720 when connecting to remote server I just took over a Small Business Server 2003 Premium Edition. The server is configured with two NICs. Both being used. One connected with ISP and the other connected to LAN. There is ISA installed and used To Do list to reconfigure the remote access . I downloaded the connection manager to my computer and tried to connect using it. I get the following error information from the connection manager: A connection to the remote computer could not be established. You might need to change the network settings for this connection. For further assistance, click More Info or search Help and Support Center for this error number. (Error 720) For customized troubleshooting information for this connection, click Help. I have logged to the SBS server via RWW and used the ISA Best Practice Analyzer and it shows the following: The VPN connection failure warning was signaled 78 times: Events that triggered the alert: 5/12/2008 4:54:55 PM - The VPN connection attempt by user wmontgomery from VPN client IP address 192.168.16.15 could not be established.     - Problems applying godaddy SSL certificate to WSS 3.0 website for external access Here is my current environment: SBS 2003 SP1 ISA 2004 SP2 MS Exch SP2 I've got all my sharepoint services websites published for external access and all work fine. I have a registered FQDN pointing to my external IP so that I can use to access my SSL site using the below listed links. https://FQDN.com/exchange https://FQDN.com/remote and https://FQDN.com/:444 These all work just fine and dandy. I used a self signed certificate that I generated within SBS and this works fine. You get the website error when you first go to one of the above listed websites but once you install it the next time and there after everything is fine. Recently I installed WSS 3.0 in a side by side install as recommended by MS. I went to godaddy and requested a web certificate. Got a great deal. 5 years for like 14.99 a year. Anyways I went through the whole process and created my CSR in IIS and sent it to godaddy. Now here is where I think the problem exists. When creating the CSR to submit to godaddy for my SSL I used the same "COMMON NAME" that is used for the above websites. I thought this was ok because it was using a different SSL port. So when I try to go the the WSS 3.0 website externally I get the following....... https://FQDN.com:5050 I get a page not found error. The error code is Error Code: 500 Internal Server Error. The target principla name is incorrect. Well after doing some researching and speaking with godaddy TS I was told that my SSL certificate from them still shows I'm using a self signed key as opposed to the private key issued to me by godaddy. They use the tool Open SSL to view the certificate being used. So I thought about it and discovered it has to be because my other SSL websites are using the self signed SSL certificate generated within SBS with the same name. So they suggested I get rid of thse self signed keys and rekey another one for reissue. I went into the MMC/Certificates and under the Personal Certificates removed all gomajaro self signed certificates as well as the new godaddy one. I created a new CSR and rekeyed my web certificate and resubmitted using the same name as the common name. Applied to the WSS 3.0 website and made the apprpriate changes in ISA. Still get the same error messages. I can still access my old ssl websites I can access internally http://companyweb (WSS2.0) as well as http://servername:8084 (WSS3.0) Now from the outside when I go the any one of the above ssl websites and view the certificate is shows publishing.domainname.local Where am I going wrong and what do I need to do. thanks for the assistance once again.     - I have screwed up Exchange and need some help please I'm not scared to admit it either. So I was having two problems: VPN users accessing companyweb and I wanted to setup PHP for my IIS install. I installed IIS after grabbing the files referenced at www.iis.net/php and restarted IIS. Then, I tried restarting IIS again later today to see if there was something wrong with companyweb that my VPN users couldn't get to it. I can internally, but it's veerryyy ssslllooowww. Apparently I have done something at some point that has my IIS confused as hell. When I open http://<server-name>/exchange in Internet Explorer, I get a directory listing of all my Exchange users names. This is not what it was doing yesterday. Yesterday (and obviously before) it would show the Outlook Web Access if I went to http://<server-name>/exchange, after prompting for credentials of course. I don't recall that I made any particular changes to my Exchange directory, but now my Windows Mobile 6 phone won't sync to the server either. In addition, if I try to connect to https://<server-name>/oma/ (and it seems to accept my credentials) I get: The website declined to show this webpage HTTP 403 Most likely causes: This website requires you to log in. What you can try: Go back to the previous page. so I think I totally hosed something here, and I don't have a clue what it was. Any help? Those are all of the pertinent details I can think of, but maybe if you have a question you'll jog my memory of something else that I might have done at some point down the line.     - System Administrator Undeliverable emails I keep getting these emails. Sometimes it comes in groups of about 40 to 50. Norton Corporate Edition is installed on my server and clients and my virus definitions are up to date. I have scanned and found nothing. I also have Symantec Mail Security for MS Exchange installed on my SBS server. Called Symantec and they say someone has my email address and is using it, but there is nothing I can do about it. Sure there has got to be someway to stop all of these messages. There is about 25 employees here and about 6 have already had this problem.     - Setting NTFS permissions Correctly Hi All, I 'm having NTFS permission issues. I'm trying to lock down a folder on a shared drive so that only one person will have access to it. However, when I try to remove the domain users group, I get a notice pop-up saying something about 'child objects' and 'inheriting'. There must be a standard way of doing this, especially in SBS.     - Quick Swing Migration question 2003 > 2003 R2 I did a swing once several years ago and don't remember exactly how it went. And I can't get into my swingmigration.com account because I forgot the password, and the email address I used at the time no longer exists so I am waiting for my account to be updated with my new email address... anyway. I have a client who is currently on SBS 2003 and is planning on replacing the hardware and running the transition pack to standard versions of the server apps. The transition pack is for R2 so our plan is to swing the current SBS to the new hardware upgarde to SBS R2 and then transtition from there. Can I save a step and swing directly from SBS2003 to SBS2003 R2? that is use the SBS 2003 R2 media to build the TempDC and the final new DC?     - Static IP My client has a SBS 2003 server. Everything seems to be working correctly except the static IP. I have the IP set to 192.168.123.166. The IP address does not change, but when i look at the IP settings, they are set for dynamic. I connect a second NIC with the same results. The server is fully patched and has the latest drives.     - Exchange maintenance after loading/deleting messages. I've been working with my SBS server in a test environment and have been experimenting with the migration of email from my OE clients. On several occasions I removed from exchange all of the messages and then re-established them with the outlook client. This has caused my exchange db to grow. I guess I'm concerned that I should run some manual maintenance before putting this into production to make sure exchange is healthy, OR is there regular maintenance that is taking care of this? If so, can I look at the maintenance logs to make sure everything is all right? My experiments have been with 2GB's of mail each time and my present priv1.edb is 3.4GB. I've read a few posts about whether or not to run manual maintenance and it seems there are 2 camps on this. I don't want to over do it, but I also want a healthy system. Advice.     - Blackberry vs Windows Mobile This is more of a general question. I have configured Windows Mobile 6 phones and it's quite easy with SBS 2003. Can I sync any/all folders I want including calendars and contacts? I want to do this syncing "over the air" via Verizon. 1. Can Blackberry sync all of the same things that a Windows Mobile can? 2. Is there anything special I have to do. 3.     - PCI Sound cards supported from Legacy audio driver I have checked the HCL to find the PCI cards supported from the Legacy audio driver, as I must install a sound card and I don't like to install any software not designed for Windows nor software from vendors. The HCL *do not report* the list of hardware compatibility with Legacy audio driver.     - Netopia 3347NWG with Remote Desktop and Remote Web Workplace I currently have a Netopia 3347NWG, using PPOE to connect to Deltacom (a local DSL), which is connected to the WAN Ethernet Adapter of an SBS 2003 Premium R1 (ISA not installed). The LAN Ethernet Adapter (of the SBS) is set to 192.168.16.2 and is connected to a switch into which is connected the rest of the office network. IP passthrough is enabled in the Netopia's Expert - Configuration section to User Configured PC, and the WAN Ethernet Adapter has the static IP address (72.xxx.xxx.xxx). Despite that, external ping and RWW and RDP will not work. Internally, I can use Remote Desktop from a workstation to access the server (via Remote Desktop Connection). I can also ping the server, on either the WAN or LAN adapter. If I try to access RWW from the workstation via https://sbs2003/Remote, I get "Internet Explorer cannot display this webpage". If I try to access RWW from a workstation in the LAN via https://192.168.16.2/Remote, I get "There is a problem with this website's security certificate", and if I then click "Continue to this website (not recommended)", I get "The page cannot be found" (HTTP error 404). In IIS Admin, Default Website is running and can be browsed; companyweb also is running and can be browsed. Remote Access directly into the Netopia setup works, via http://72.xxx.xxx.xxx:8080. Obviously, this needs to be changed, but prior message strings refer to configuration settings which do not seem to be present on this Netopia model. There is a telnet access available to this Netopia, from a local workstation, which seems to provide a lot more options -- with little helpful instruction.     - Restoring OEM SBS 2003 to different hardware after catrastrophe We are developing / testing our disaster recovery processes and are using Acronis True Image with the Universal Restore option. However, I'm pretty clueless about MS licensing... If our SBS 2003 domain controller dies ... we have an Acronis image that we can restore to a different piece of hardware using the Universal Restore option (bare-metal to different hardware). 1. How does MS licensing impact this scenario? 2. Will we be allowed to activate the OS on the new hardware platform since it is an OEM version? 3. Would this be any different if it were Windows Server 2003 instead of SBS ? (we have that scenario also) 4. Is there a way to upgrade our OEM SBS 2003 to a non-OEM version that can e transfered via a disaster restore? Finally, in order to even test out our disaster recovery plan, we would need to activate Windows Server on the new (different) hardware platform for a short period of time to validate that everything works. ...How are other companies working through this same disaster recovery scenario with MS licensing? I have 2 ESATA external 500GB hard drives that I back up to and rotate weekly. When NTbackup runs I get an alert that the disk drive is low on disk space and the back up fails. It is acting like NTbackup cache localy to the C: partition and then transfers the back up it to the external drive? and is there a way to fix this so I dont keep getting this low disk space error.     - Full restore won't work. Help! I'll try to keep this succinct. I'm no SBS or server expert but I've set up a SBS Std server for my small office of about 15 PCs and kept it running fairly well for the past four years. This weekend I found it wouldn't boot with the error "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \system32\NTOSKRNL.exe" After researching and trying to repair from CD and checking the boot.ini file, chkdsk said there were unrecoverable errors. I do regular full backups to an external drive so I slapped a new hard drive in the tower and did a fresh OS install, then followed the instructions I found on restoring from a backup. After many hours it completed and went to reboot, where I got the message "Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk." I tried again with another hard drive, then from an older backup file. Same problem each time. Then I saw in another post that I needed to get the fresh OS up to the SP2 level I had before so I tried that and still have the same error at boot. Clearly I'm doing something wrong. I need to either 1) repair the failed restore state I have. 2) figure out why my restores don't work and do it correctly. or 3) reinstall a fresh OS and migrate my user accounts, email, sharepoint, etc from backup data.     - Need help using msiexec.exe I think I found a way to fix my "hang" problem during setup, but I need to install Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable to do it. Situation: I am in "forced" Setup mode and am at the point where my server "hangs" at the 12-min left mark in "Registering Components". The problem, I think, is with the system not being able to find and use Visual C++2005 Redistributable. The problem is that because it's hung up, it won't recognize any drive letter expect C (I've tried cd\ and XCOPY - no luck), so my thought is to use msiexec.exe to auto- place the file (vsredist_x86.exe) into c:\Windows]WinSxS\ and then execute it. Conundrum: I've looked at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms235291(VS.80).aspx and http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa372024(VS.85).aspx and don't really feel comfortable in putting them together to do what I want.     - SBS2003 & 2008 TS Deployment, Just want to make sure it will work Hi I am planning a deployment of a SBS2003 server (unfortunately needs to occur soon so cannot wait for SBS2008 :( ). It will server files, exchange & SQL to total of 50 local & remote users. Also will be a Terminal Server box for 30 remote users (22 sites). I thought 2008 would be the best option here with the added TS functionality. Remote users will be served Outlook, an SQL Front end app & Office etc. A 2000/2000 link for TS/RWW connections will be provisioned with 512/512 clients ADSL 2+ for other main office traffic While most remote sites are static, there will be use from home connections etc so I was going to use RWW for all remote connections. With cost a big issue saving on deploying VPN hardware etc. However I have read that there are issues 2008 and SBS2003 through RWW. Firstly the 2008 TS does not show up as an application server in RWW, is there a work around for this? I would like to take advantage of the 'easy print' also, so if there is a work around to get the 2008 TS visible in RWW will RWW pass RDP 6.0? I guess the alternative is to use TS Gateway straight to the TS box using HTTPS, but that sidesteps the other RWW features. I'm not 100% sure yet but likely full Remote Desktop will be presented to the remote clients (restricted to only allowable apps) and will likely use RemoteApps to serve apps to the LAN clients. I guess I just wanted to find out what issues this config may present.     - Event ID 402 I received the above error on my SBS 2003 server which has Exchange 2003 on it. When I looked into the sessions on the default Smtp Virtual Server, I saw hundreds of sessions from my ISP server which is configured as a backup for my server. If my server is down, the ISP spools the messages and then sends them to my exchange server when it comes back up. I terminated all the sessions and rebooted the system and my external email is now coming through OK. But I see these same connections from the backup server showing up again. They do not terminate. Hello Everyone, We're running SBS 2003 internally and we have several Internet domain names forwarded to 2 web sites being hosted by a web hosting company on our behalf. All employee email accounts are hosted at the aforementioned web hosting company's mail servers. All employees' email programs are configured to retrieve email and send mail using POP3/SMTP from the web hosting company's respective server addresses and ports. Can I setup Exchange as included with SBS 2003 for employees to have a shared calendar, shared address book, etc. without affecting the email addresses and domain names currently in use? Are there any caveats to doing this, especially considering most workstations are WinXP SP2 and one owner's laptop is Vista Business (Outlook 2K/2003 vs Windows Vista Mail)? Do we need to standardize and force everyone to run the same version of Outlook? Notes: It is a small (<10 employees) family-owned office with 2 members of the same family operating 2 different businesses with 2 different names, 2 different domain names (FQDNs), and 2 different email address name pools, but sharing 1 network, server, etc. That is one of the reasons why we decided to host Web sites and email off site. automatic and started on a default SBS2003 SP1 install? This service is not
starting and I'm getting the error below. But before I spent a lot of time
troubleshooting this, I wanted to double check and make sure that it was
supposed to be started.

Hi Brandon,

It is set to automatic (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/829623 for a
list of default services that are installed in Windows Small Business Server
2003) by default. I just checked our SBS box and it is running. Also,
Windows Server 2003 SP2 is supposed to correct for a memory leak in
cryptographic services (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914962/en-us) so
install that before spending too much time on troubleshooting (should be
running SP2 anyways). ;-)
