I have had this problem at a few sites.
SBS setup with 2 NIC
ADSL modem set as bridged/pass through
Running the wizard I select a connection that requires a user name and
password and fill in the fixed IP address and DNS fields
Just the normal thing that is used and works most of the time.

Now the problem
After doing this sometimes it will not connect however if I just leave it
for about 2 hours or more it connects.
Question is there a way to force the connection at anytime??

Regards Doug

Hi Doug:

Your question leads me to ask why you find it necessary to fill in any ip
info. Your SBS server should be acting as the DHCP server for your LAN and
the workstation should be getting all of its DNS and IP info from the SBS
DHCP.

If you have been using the Wizards, and if all DNS settings point to your
SBS internal nic, connections should be immediate.

If you have questions about the DNS settings, please post the unedited
results of the following command;

ipconfig /all > c:\iptest.txt

from the SBS and a typical workstation:

Are you putting in the correct IP DNS Gateway information?
(that your ISP gives you?)

Sorry if this is a missunderstanding
when we select a connection that requiures a user name and password the next
step is to fill in those fields then on the same page there are the fields to
fill in the fixed IP address of the site from the ISP and the DNS of the ISP
SBS then becomes the authenticator for the ISP

The connection that I'm talking about is to the internet. All the internal
is OK

Ok, so I answered another question, not the one you asked. Too little
sleep. It was another post about the add a user wiz.

When you say it "will not connect", what are you experiencing? Do you mean
the wizard does not finish, or that the server or the workstations cannot
connect to the internet or ?

the results of the ipconfig /all may still be useful.

Yes, if this was incorrect then it may never connect
As I stated in the first post it just takes a long time to connect to the
internet

Do yourself a favour and grab a simple NAT router that can perform the
PPPoE/A login for you. It is quite possible the existing ADSL device may be
able to be put into NAT mode, this will do.

The main reason for this recommendation is to provide a stable IP interface
to your 'external' connection. There is a secondary (and these days rather
minor) advantage that the additional NAT layer offers some protection to the
server.

The only 'down' side is that you then need to set up port forwarding on the
device, but for most devices the few minutes required to do so is not as
much cost as the benefits.

sounds like a DNS Issue
Post the IPCONFIG of a Workstation and the server.

I'd also be tempted to use OpenDNS.com DNS servers
(Some ISP's have terrible DNS servers)

Open DNS servers are
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

They are Free and if you sign up you can use their FREE filtering.
It's AWESOME!

I take it from the responses that this maybe a ISP DNS issue and it takes
time for the DNS servers to populate or whatever.
This has only happened in the last few months and it is with the same ISP
If I set the modem to not bridged and let it be the device to login then the
connection is available immediately
However this is no good for RWW

Just thought that there might a way to force the connection immediately

Thanks for all your help

Well it should be immediately
At least it is for me?

However if this is a new ISP and you are connecting network and the SBS
server on the same day.
then yes you will have to wait for them.

But Honestly After you run CEICW and put in the right IP Gateway and DNS
it should work Right Then and there!

I just suggested OpenDNS because Some ISP's have issues with their DNS
servers.

Thanks again Russ,
I will use the OpenDNS servers if I have this problem again
If that then fixes the issue tyhen we will know for sure that it was a
problem with the ISP servers
