I have purchased SBS 2003 recently and ended up with incomplete
install so the server does not know it is a PDC, hence EULA error
messages and auto shutdown , which from this news group I find I
should run the integrated setup.

The server is fully functional and in use so this looks a bit risky,
we will make a Ghost image then try run setup.

My main query is the 5 CALS we have. I have connected more than 5
PC's at once all connecting to the SQL Server with separate VB and
Access apps.
I expect to purchase more CALS but am not sure why SBS has not
complained yet, is this tied in with the above?

(I do remember being asked about licencing re per server/per seat or
something similar) and selected per seat ... this part I found
unexpected as did not get this question when installing our
development PC ?

Any advice on CALS and licencing appreciatted

You should rerun setup and then you will get the opportunity to add more
cal's.

We don't do per server or per seat so it's "SBScore" service right now
is more freaking out that you haven't done an install than worrying
about the cal count at this time.

There is a bit of a cal buffer but you should apply them after you
properly install the box.

ok but I would like to know how the current CALS limit has not
triggered a warning message of some sort. We originally only thought
we would need 5 clients, but now we have 6 PC's connecting plus the
client software on the server making 7 ??

There is a small buffer of CALs for system processes.
If the System is not using those CALs than they will be there for your
"over-limit" Logons, but don't rely on them being there always.

Bluntly, SQL Server doesn't enforce CAL counts. Ergo, you can breach
the legal number of CALs you have without SBS recognising it. However,
if the BSA or FAST or whatever software auditing bodies you have in
your location come round, you need to make sure you have the right
number of CALs...
