We have SBS 2003 at our HO and a Windows 2003 server in a local workgroup at
a branch office, with a hardware vpn between the 2 sites. How do I make the
branch office server part of the SBS domain?

Are you going to make the server at the remote office a domain controller?

If the VPN is hardware and properly passing data between the two networks
then the documentation still works. I have several clients using watchguard
firebox peak/edge combos for VPN and have branch office servers (DC's too)
set up following that doc.

Hello Chris,

Thank you for posting here.

According to your description, I understand that you want to add additional
DC on the branch office. If I have misunderstood the problem, please don't
hesitate to let me know.

We always recommend customer to install an additional domain controller for
a remote site. We also recommend customer to configure the additional
domain controller as a Global Catalog to perform catalog search for the
entire active directory.

After doing so, if the VPN connection is down, the additional domain
controller can still authenticate for domain users, and the problem
described in your post will be fixed.

Based on my research, to set up the additional domain controller, perform
the following:

1. While still in a workgroup, promote the server to a domain controller.
(Click Start, click Run, type dcpromo, and then click OK.)

Note: For the domain controller type, you must select Additional domain
controller for an existing domain. To complete the wizard you will need the
Small Business Server computer's full DNS name.

2. Configure DNS to forward queries to the Small Business Server computer.

3. Select the server to be a Global Catalog Server.

In addition, you must create 2 sites to reflect the physical sites in
Active Directory Sites and Services snap-in (in Administrative Tools).

Terence Liu has posted the instructions for how to make the server a domain
controller. I prefer to do this at the main office then take the domain
controller to the remote office and reconfigure the TCP/IP settings. If this
isn't an option make sure that the server is using the home office SBS
server for DNS and no other DNS servers are listed. It is extremely
important that DNS be working properly before you try to promote the server
to a DC.

Thanks Cliff
But I get an error when I try and run the http://servername/connectcomputer

On the remote server I have the dns pointing to the local address of the
SBS, when I ping the SBS from the remote server it resolves the ip address
to the public/wan ip address not the internal ip address and the ping fails.
If I ping the server netbios name it fails. I'm not sure if that means a
router config problem or dbs/wins issues.

Any leads appreciated.

If you have DNS pointed to the local address but attempting to ping it pulls
the public address then DNS is failing locally. That is potentially a sign
that your hardware VPN is not passing traffic properly or that you have
firewall issues. You can start there...but without knowing your network
topology (not something I'd recommend posting!) I can't tell you much more.
Worst case, you might want to call in a consultant who can discover such
things on-site.

Hello Chris,

Thank you for your update, and thank Kerry and Cliff for the input.

Now you unable to ping SBS internal IP, I agree with Cliff, this is mostly
the hardware site-to-site VPN issue. Please connect the VPN vendor to
ensure all traffic could go through the VPN connection.

I want to add one thing, since you have hardware site-to-site VPN between 2
offices, you need to run the SBS with single NIC, or you unable to access
SBS internal IP address.

I hope these will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,
