I am upgrading a 2000 Server to an SBS2003 server over the weekend.
We created a new domain name and recreated all new user accounts, etc...
Now I need to move over just the data from the old server to the new one.
From there, I can recreate the few shares they have. However, there is
approximately 100 Gig of data. My initial thoughts were to move the data off
to a workstation, then copy it back, but this will take alot of time moving
the data back and forth. I tought to install the old tape software and
drive, inventory their last backup tape and restore that it, but again, too
much time.

Is there a way I can map a temporary drive to the old server server and to a
direct transfer of data that way? I've never done this and look forward to
any assistance I can get.

Thanks in advance

Hi Landfish768:

That should work. You will be challenged for credentials when you hit the
old server, but presumably you know the administrators, so you should be
able to connect. I would probably use the administrative share for this as
it avoids all rights issues. Try mapping a drive from the new to
\\SBS-OLD\D$. or what ever drive letter is your data drive.

You might lose your DHCP for the duration, but it will restart when you
disconnect the old SBS and restart the new one.

How are you going to transfer the email? Exmerge, export? Since you have
created a new domain and a new exchange organization, you can't forklift.

Hello Larry,

Thank's as always for your quick reply.

We are currently using POP3 mail, so mail is not an issue on this server. I
will just import their existing Outlook/Outlook Express (argh!!!) email from
their local hard drives.

I am going to try your approach first. My other concern that I forgot to
mention is that I named the new server the same as the old... I'm not sure
if this will come into play or not when I attempt to map the two servers.
The new domain is companyname.local. The old domain was originally setup as
companyname.com.

Thank you!

Attach a usb drive to old server to copy to. Attach usb drive to new
server.

From new server log in to old server by Start Run \\OldServerIP and
enter in a valid user name and password. This assumes that the servers
are on the same network ip scheme.

Hmmm... not likely that \\servername will get you to the old server if the
new one has the same name.

Try RDP to the ip of the old server.

Yes, that's an inefficient method.

And not worth it b/c it's not like you can migrate the security anyway.

This is easy. Download & install the W2003 Resource Kit tools on the new
server (these are good to have anyway).

On the new server connect to \\oldserver\someshare & provide admin
credentials.

Then in a command prompt:

robocopy \\oldserver\share\ d:\whatever\path\you\want\ /e /r:1 /w:1

this will copy the contents of the source to the destination, including all
subfolders, retrying once & waiting one second between retries. If you run
the same command again, it will copy only newer/changed files.

robocopy /??? will give you all the parameters

If robocopy won't run, cd to program files\windows resource kit\tools or
wherever you installed the RK and run it from there.

If you have spaces in your paths enclose them in double quotes (e.g.,
\\server\share\folder name"\ or "d:\this is\a\folder name\" )
Make sure the backslash is *after* the last double quote.

Robocopy is incredibly handy ...I use it all the time.

If the old server is not going to be used as described In this scenario,
rename the old server, reboot, create a share if they are not still there,
connect as Larry described. Copy the files. make sure all actions that needs
the current name is done with.
