I am a student volunteering for a charity. They want to backup their SBS
server, running Windows Server 2003, that currently contains a 300 Gb hard
drive approximately 1/2 full. What would be a good backup media for this
system? Cost is an issue.

Hi:

Use the built in SBS backup wizard found in the Server Management Console.

Any USB or SATA external hard drive will do what you want. Bigger is
better, as you can keep multiple copies of the backups on the same drive.
Most companies purchase two, and keep one off site, rotating them as often
as necessary.

A 500 GB external drive should be under $125 USD.

Hmmm... I wondering if there's a concern about being about to back up 150 GB
of data in any reasonable period of time. I normally get about 30GB/2hour
to external hard drives (with Verify turned on). If that's typical, it may
take about 10 hours to do a full backup of his SBS server. They may need
backup or imaging software that does differential backups (once a full
backup has been performed).

If they want CHEAP, although it can be problematic, an external hard
drive of some type is good, but there can be problems, so you really
need to monitor it. To be effective as a backup you need 2 or more
devices, one should be off-site at all times, one should be connected to
the server, and one to do major backups before updates or as part of a
rotation cycle.

If you invest in quality USB drives, say 5 of them, you're almost at the
cost of LTO-2 tape drive and tapes, which offer a lot easier method and
transport/offsite ability.

Hmmm some more...

the original request did not say anything about his server. With a low
budget he may have a server with USB 1 which would make this impossible.

rtshurmur: You will need to verify that you have USB 2 on that server. You
may have to add a card. Additionally, I submit that 150 GB of data is in
the high range for smaller organizations. Is it possible that there is non
essential data that you could isolate into separate folders and not backup
so much every day?

Or, using ntbackup, instead of the SBS Wizard, you can do incremental or
differential backups.

If this a Non Profit you may qualify for TechSoup.com

A couple of USB's
and Backup Exec for $59.00
http://www.techsoup.org/stock/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=TechSoupMain&keyword=backup&product%5Fid=G-42351&cg=searchterms&sg=backup

Then you can do incremental backups.
