While I wait for Grisoft to get back to me, I figured I'd get a faster
answer here.

Going to eval AVG8 since I've been using the free AVG for a few years
and am happy with it.

They have a version for "file servers" AND a version for "email
servers", but what I have is both. My server is for file/print and
email. Will the "email servers" version do both?

What I'm hoping for is a single product that protects the server,
gives me workstation software AND email scanning capabilities.

Hopefully AVG does this in 1 product otherwise I'll have to keep
searching. I think I evalled another product that worked that way.

Thanks,

Roveer

I run AVG 8 on two different client sites. One is with AVG Internet
Security SBS Edition and the other with Network Edition and the Email Server
Edition (at the time I installed that to the client, SBS Edition didn't
exist).

If you need only on product that covers everything, you have to go with the
Internet Security SBS Edition. Pretty good product but I have to say that
yesterday, I was running to fix a 'problem' with a client that couldn't
access his aol account (on Vista computer). The only time they could access
it, it was when I would uninstall AVG completely. I send them an email and
they haven't gotten back to me yet. The client decided to disable UAC on
the computer, which was another way to solve the problem. I told them it's
not safe to do that but the client.... is the client. I think that will be
corrected though.

Another issue I found out, is that the main service of the product can not
be stopped, unless you uninstall the product. In other words, if you click
on the icon on the task bar, and close it, the program keeps on running.

Overall I like it, but I would also suggest you take a look at Trend Micro.
Price wise I think Trend is a bit cheaper now, and it's more popular with
the SBSers. I like them both.

Thanks for the input. I did find the SBS product on their website
after finding a features grid which showed which versions did what but
I have to say their site can be a bit confusing. It's not clear which
version does what (until I found the grid).

Trend was the other product I looked at a while back. I have used
their web based scanning as a secondary to my software based
solutions.

I'd be interested in hearing from anyone on Trends products. I guess
before installing trial versions, I need to do some more research. I
was pretty set on AVG, but Trend needs to be explored.

Comments welcome.

For Trend you should look into Client/Server Messaging Security for SMB.

The difference in the management console between AVG and Trend is that Trend
uses a web interface instead of Windows application. You can install
remotely to your client machines without needing to involve your users (same
as AVG)

If the computer has another antivirus program installed (e.g AVG), Trend
will uninstall it and install it's own agent. I think the content filtering
options (in the email component) is more extensive in Trend than AVG. AVG's
new Web Shield and LinkScanner on the client side, is pretty cool (inspects
the links on a page and validates whether they are legit or spoof). The
drawback is that it slows down the pages a bit.

I haven't done extensive comparison, I just thought of posting a couple of
things that just crossed my mind.
