    - Slow Logon It seems that my 2 clients are experiencing slow logons. I am using folder redirection (Desktop & Documents) only. I am using roaming profiles. Is there anything I can do via disabling DHCP (Client and/or Server Service), that might help? We all use static IP addys and I don't know if this could have an impact?     - SBS 2003 and Gmail problem Hallo We have a Small Business Server 2003 and use the Exchange part. One of our employees is on an other location and have a POP3 mail account on another domain (name@external.dk). On our exchangeserver he has a mail account (name@internal.dk) and we have created a contact with his external mail-account. All mail to name@internal.dk is forwarded to name@external.dk and is works onless the sender sends from a Gmail account. The sender gets a mail from postmaster@internal.dk saying that the mail couldn't be delivered because: Sender address rejected: Invalid Sender Domain Is there somewhere on our exchangeserver, this is typed in? or what is the reason for this message?     - NT4 with Exchange 5.5 to SBS2003 R2 using ADMT Hi, I have a customer who wants me to do their migration from NT4 to SBS2003 R2. Since I've never done it and I've lived on an NT4 domain for the last nine years (don't fix what aint broke), I took the opportunity to use my own domain as the guinea pig for a test migration. I found the ADMT help lacking but, I was successful migrating the domain. I actually spent several months sort of pregnant but duplicating the users and key group, syncronizing the new sbs file server with the old file server and then mapping user on the old dome to shares on the new domain. The only snag with that was security which I was able to address. Anyway, my question is about Exchange 5.5 and migrating to the new server; when I do the ADMT migration will the message stores transfer as well? Tag: OWA Tag: 387543

    - DHCP? Hi All, I have one SBS2003 Premium Server and 2 clients. I also have a Westell327 Verizon DSL Router. I have set the router up NOT to assign IP address. I use static IP's for the server and the 2 clients. Do I need to have the DHCP service running on the Server? I noticed it is trying to do some funky things with one of my client XP machines. I can see one of my clients in a pool with a different IP than what I assigned it but when checking the client it has the IP I assigned. If no, do I disable from the DHCP window on the Server or do I disable the service from starting??     - Need help with determining what the problem is so I can fix it Hello i've got an odd one I was hoping I could get some assistance with, This customer has 10 new xp pro computers and 1 sbs2k3 server that I installed. They rely on PaperPort for their document/pdf/scanning management. Several times a week when copying or renaming a file within paperport, it freezes. When it freezes on this users system it takes down every application for every user on the network, with the normal unable to open file type of error. I unplug her system from the network thinking it is the source of the problem or interference, this does not change anything. Here's where it gets wierd. Even though none of the applications will run, I can still access the mapped drive and copy and paste items from it. I can ping the server and bring up the internet. Outlook remains connected and recieves mail fine. However, no network applications will work. With performance monitor running on the server I can see the number of open files go from 170 down to 0 immediately following the paperport crash. In task manager on the server my processor is normal and below 15%, ram and virtual memory are normal, there are no tasks eating up the processor. There are no events in the event log relating to any type of problem. I disconnect the server from the network and attempt to rename the folder (via win explorer) that the user was copying when paperport crashed, I cannot rename it explorer essentially freezes. Only a reboot of the server will bring the network back to its normal state. My question is this: What performance monitoring counters would you recommend I watch to determine why the server is not processing requests? (I can't seem to determine to what it's not processing since the mapped drives are still up and running, and outlook is as well) (please omit the default counters, current drive queue length, ,active connections and open files) When a workstation copys a folder from the server to another directory on the server and the workstation crashes in the middle of the copy, what process or service running on the Server would be effected by the workstation crashing? Theoretically If I can see the files on a mapped drive without any problems but when I go to open those files in any app (word,excel,adobe,etc) and the app freezes without any errors what would this be indicitive of? (assuming of course it's not a permission problem, I can open said docs locally on my workstation, and after a server reboot those files open fine) It seems the server is detecting a partial copy or corrupt file and for some reason this is taking the server down. Oh there is one important thing I forgot to mention, they were having the same exact problem on another server before I installed the sbs2k3. Also, all workstations have been replaced with no results. I am absolutely positive this is a paperport specific issue (sorry, and yes I have posted in the paperport newsgroup as well).     - Redirection Problem SBS 2003 R2 Standard. I had redirection turned on. I did not like how it worked, so I created Home drives manually, setup permissions and mapped a drive to the new location. A script then copies various files form the client machines to the server when a user logs on. This appears to be working, except for the following: A. User logs on and opens Excel, the from within Excel, opens a document - opens quickly. B. User double-clicks a desktop shortcut to the same document and it takes at least a minute to open. I think it is related to the redirection getting messed up. If I disconnect the drive mapped to their documents, the file will open quickly either way (A or B). When the drive is mapped, and trying B it appears to be doing something on the mapped drive, like looking for redirected files. This user is connecting remotely via a DSL connection and is very noticeable. When looking at the properties of a couple of these documents, the "start in" folder was pointing to the old \\servername\username redirected file, where the file no longer exists. I corrected this, but it does not help. Excel is just an example, it does the same thing with Word, Adobe, or Access documents. Any ideas? Tag: OWA Tag: 387504

    - Laptop randomnly dropping wifi signal - any ideas? Hi guys, I have a laptop on a SBS network, for some reason it keeps randomly dropping the network - I am not entirely sure what is going on, but it seems to keep losing the wireless access key. I have another laptop on the same network which is, however, still connecting fine. Both laptops are XP, using the same wifi point, and both users have the same permissions level. The key is being assigned locally rather than via any policies - could this be the issue and if so how do I configure to automatically provide the wireless key, as this could resolve quite a few problemos!     - Roaming Profiles and Redirected Folders Inconsistent I'm Running Windows 2000 Small Business Server as a PDC/DC/AD, DNS, and Terminal Server with a Windows 2003 Server running DHCP, DNS, and File Server. Clients are Windows XP Pro. On the W2K SBS, I set the default policy to include folder redirection of the users' "My Documents", etc. folders. In AD, I set the users profiles to be redirected (different path, same server, W2K3) as well. The redirection is not working consistently. I've had cases where a user logs in from one computer and their folders are redirected. The same user goes to another computer and logs in - the folders are NOT redirected. It is "hit and miss" as to whether the folders/profiles are redirected or not. What should I check to diagnose and fix these problems? What needs to be changed? Tag: OWA Tag: 387479

    - Using DHCP to separate activity? Is it possible, within Windows DHCP (Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2), to specify a range for wired clients and a separate range for wireless clients? Background: a small organization, two servers (both domain controllers), one running DHCP. Client systems connected to this network fall in three categories: 1. Permanently wired desktop systems for office workers, members of the domain. 2. Wireless notebook systems for office workers, members of the domain. 3. Guest laptops needing Internet connectivity only, not members of the domain, wirelessly connected. All three client types will be getting their addresses from DHCP. I was thinking of disabling DHCP services on the wireless router (Linksys) altogether. I wanted to specify a range of IP's, perhaps even on a different subnet for the wireless clients to keep them as separated as possible from the domain. Then create reservations for the couple of laptops that are domain members, assuming that would supercede whatever rules could be established to force wireless guests to a different range/subnet. I'm supporting a VERY small, non-profit organization with not much of a budget for this kind of work. Most of the equipment I have at my disposal is either old, borrowed, or was obtained cheaply/free. Labor to design and implement whatever I come up with will be donated. Sparing me the "you get what you pay for" anecdotes...what's the most efficient way to accomplish separating guest wireless connections that need Internet access only, from legitimate office workers on both wired desktops and wireless laptops? I cringe at the idea of trusting the Linksys router for network security, but perhaps I'll need to do that if I can't separate things out a little via DHCP. Perhaps DHCP is not the tool to attempt isolation/segregation with. But GPO's/IPsec will only apply to members of the domain and guests will only interact with resources on the LAN at the level of the router and DHCP server. I don't have too many other options right now. The only networking equipment I have at my disposal is A) a DSL modem, B) a wireless Linksys router, and C) a small 6-8 port switch with little to no onboard intelligence (doubtful any VLAN capabilities). No DMZ, no ISA, no proxy, no dedicated firewalls, etc. Ideas? Suggestions? I'm open to anything at this point. I'm just beginning the design phase. Thanks in advance. Tag: OWA Tag: 387477

    - Adding a W2K server to a SBS network I have setup a SBS 2003 server in its own domain and want to add a W2K server to that domain. Do I just add the W2K server under 'Client Computers' or do I need to add it under 'Server Computers?' This server is just a member server. I don't need to administer it from the SBS server.     - Poor Fax Line Quality? OK, I need some advice here. I have a new SBS 2003 Standard install that is using the faxing capabilities. The users are reporting they are having faxing problems. When I look at the incoming logs I see alot of "poor line quality" or "the machine did not respond in time" errors. On the outgoing logs things look much more normal. This occurs in about 1/3 of all incoming faxes. I changed out the modem and put in an USR modem on the HCL and still have the same issues so it's not the modem. I even watched the monitoring as a fax came in and I did notice that it took about 2-3 minutes to transfer 1 page and for what the content was on this page that took way too much time. Before this the user was using a standard fax machine with no reported problems so I'm a little stumped here short of getting verizon involved in looking at the line. This fax line is also shared for the DSL. I am also thinking of turning down the baud rate on the server but I shouldn't have to. Any ideas here? Thanks! -Richard K Tag: OWA Tag: 387425

    - Sharepoint Extranet disabled RWW Scenario: I've setup an extranet site on SBS03. When I applied SSL certificate to it, I can no longer access the RWW and OWA sites. Before I did this, I had not problems. Setup: https://file.domain.com goes to sharepoint extranet https://file.domain.com/remote userd to work, but no longer does.     - Remote Server Administration Tools for Vista SP1 Released The Remote Server Administration Tools for Vista have been released. This is the tool set that replaces the adminpack.msi tools pack for XP. Vista SP1 is required. Once you run the installer, you have to go to CP -> Programs and Features -> Turn Windows features off or on. I recommend taking a look at these - I do all my server admin from my desktop PC, and these tools let me skip RDP for most simple functions.     - Exchange Users Although we only have a limited number of SBS users, we are quickly running out of Exchange managed mailboxes. Ultimately we will have 200+ mailbox users so presumable will have to add a separate Exchange Server to our SBS controlled domain?     - NTFRS 13552 and 13555 Erorrs on SBS 2003 Following Tornado I'm running SBS 2003 Premium w/sp2 (not R2). A few weeks back, we were hit by the tornado that came through Atlanta and the server sustained a shutdown due to power events that overwhelmed our APC UPS. Following the event, I'm now getting several NTFRS 13552 and 13555 errors in my SBS event log. The FRS error status is FrsErrorMismatchedJournalId. I've done a good bit of research on these errors, but I'd like to get some feedback from the SBS gang to correct the issue. Currently, the FRS service will start, but it will post these errors in the event log. The SYSVOL and NETLOGON shares are functioning properly and the users can login just fine on the network. Also, my SBS Group Policies are working fine. I do not have any other domain controllers, but I do have one member server running MS-Windows 2003 Server w/sp2. Symantec AV is set to exclude the necessary folders from realtime scanniing like SYSVOL. I do also have a good backup of the SystemState from before the store with Veritas Backup Exec 9.1. What would be the best recommendation to correct this issue. I'm guessing that I can perform a non-authoritative restore using my backups of the SystemState, but I'd like to try the baby steps first.     - SBS Backup & NAS devices This is SBS 2003 R2 Premium. On the LAN we have two NAS devices. One (A) is not joined to the Domain but can be accessed via the LAN. It has a list of authorised users and is setup so the user Administrator can access all areas. The other (B) has been joined to the domain, and uses the domain users for access control. Again Administrator can access all areas. If we use the Backup wizard and configure it to backup to A and a specific folder, it then runs quite happily (if a little slowly) and the backup files duly appear (until it runs out of space!!). If we use the Backup Wizard and configure it to backup to B and a specfic folder (with the same access privileges as A) and then run it, the process creates the sub-folder "Backup Files" (as it does above), but then fails unable to access the folder. At this point there is an empty file in Backup Files and it wont let me look at it as I (Administrator) dont have sufficient privileges. I've tried changing the ownership permissions of both the file and the folder but it still wont allow me to access the file or delete it. So, my question is, why is the Backup process creating a folder and file with different ownership and privileges, and what are they? TIA, JohnK Tag: OWA Tag: 387382

    - SBS Setup Error: An error occurred while creating user accounts... I'm hoping somebody has seen this error before and knows how to get by it. I have a brand new, fresh install of SBS (brought current settings over via a swing migration, had no issues that I can identify with that). I have rebuilt the server completely a few times, so I can pretty much rule out a bad install. At the end of the SBS Setup, I get the error: "An error occurred while creating user accounts. Open Active Directory Users and Computers, manually create a test user to verify that Active Directory is running. Rerun setup." I'm then prompted to restart the server, but it doesn't think it has finished the setup successfully and still keeps the "Continue Setup" icon on the desktop. Everything is functional from what I can see: Exchange, OWA, Companyweb, etc. I have included logs from that setup below. Please let me know if you'd like any additional information.     - Windows SBS 2003 & Windows Vista We are currently running Windows Small Business Server 2003 and have about 10 client computers connected to the server. Two of the clients were installed about 6 months ago and are running "Windows Vista Business", the rest of the computers are still on XP. About 1 month ago i tried to install a new client running vista to the server and had trouble with it... Due to lack of information on the internet i gave up on the problem and installed XP (which connects up perfectly). In the past few days i have again been trying to add yet another new "vista" client to the server. And i keep receiving the same error. "The Server that is running Windows SBS 2003 cannot be found. Verify the following before you continue:.......". The message says to ensure the server is the DNS.... which it is and then it says something about clearing the proxy information in Internet Explorer...which i have also done........ It really has me stumped!! I have even tonight wiped this client again and installed XP on the machine and it connects perfectly without a hitch......     - RWW and Web Site Hi all, As I have stated before I use GoDaddy to host my web site (www.damexpress.net). When I use RWW I use my static IP address (provided by Verizon) to connect to my workplace server and computers. All of my mail is hosted at GoDaddy. And the users use GoDaddy's web based interface to send and receive mail. What I want to do is: (I know I have been over this before in this NG but sometimes things don't sink in!!!) 1. I think that I may want to use Outlook 2003 but I don't see that in SBS2003 programs. I am not sure that using Outlook has any advantages over the current web base e-mail??? 2. If there are overwhelming advantages to using Outlook then are there any step by step guides to follow to make this happen. I know that it involves changing MX records and an A record but all of this is may not be necessary if I am not going to change the way users get mail. This NG has been absolutely great. I have been helped with: Roaming Profiles (works great now) Folder Redirection (works great but found out I really don't need it because all users have to access the same files, so I just shared them on a separate drive. RWW (works great but I can only access the computers in the network, nothing else works because RWW says I don't have things installed or configured but more on that to come :) Still haven't got VPN to work and I would like to get it to work even if I don't use it.     - HDD failure! Mirror boots ok except WSUS - Re-installation is fail Hi! Please help, I can't find a solution... Hereâ??s the situation: - System with 2 HDDs (HDD0 & HDD1). - SBS 2003 installed to the first partition of HDD0. - WSUS(2) database installed to the second partition of HDD0. - Using soft-raid mirroring only to the first partition of HDD0 (being mirrored to the first partition of the HDD1). Thus, WSUS wasnâ??t being mirrored anywhere! Due to continuously environmental power problems (about 10 days long), the SBS 2003 disk failed! The BIOS doesnâ??t even detect the HDD0. I switched to the soft-raid mirrored HDD1 and the system (thank God!) works fine except (of course) of the WSUS service. The WSUS database folder is gone for ever! After the shock I bought a new hard disk and I created a soft-raid mirrored HDD(1), mirroring this time both c: and d: partitions of HDD(0). The old mirror (HDD(1)) became the HDD(0) and the new installed disk (HDD(1)) is now mirroring the HDD(0). I tried to uninstall WSUS 2 and re-install it, but the installation is failing (I tried 3 times). Our SBS 2003 server has been having problems lately where when somebody goes to logon to the console sometimes one of the following things will occur: 1. When pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL, the console freezes and screen just becomes blank with wallpaper at back (No logon prompt shown) 2. When pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL and then logging on (entering password etc) the console then freezes after logon prompt has dissapeared and becomes blank with wallpaper at back Sometimes we may lose network connectivity, otherwise other times console is frozen, though remote logon's are allowed and networks are still up.     - Software RAID Recovery Just experienced a hard drive failure that has Mirrored Drives. The problem is I think when the one drive went bad it corrupted the other drive. So know I have a broken HD, a good HD that shows data when I install it in another computer but it won't boot the server. They are SCSI drives. Tried the repair install but SBS doesn't see this disk. Does anyone know if I can just Ghost this disk that shows data and the OS on it to another drive in another PC? I was close to calling OnTrack for data recovery just not sure how much they charge and how good the results are. If anyone has any feedback I would be interested in knowing.     - Blackberry and SBS setup Hi, My boss got a Blackberry while everyone else has WMP5, gotta be different! Anyway, if my boss leaves his desktop on all the time with Outlook opens, does it mean with the BB desktop software, it can synchorize the Blackberry over the data network just like if I had installed BSE server?     - Another security question/issue. Ok; I get daily hits to the disabled admin account. Event log tells me they are denied access. First, I was told the reason the attempts are higher than my lockout policy is because policies don't apply to admin account - correct? How can I find out who is making these attempts and how I can deny that individual access? The most annoying instance happens very close to the same time every morning at about 4:00 a.m. The logs don't give an address of the user trying the attempted logins. What are my options? Second, if the account is obviously disabled, why would a hacker keep attempting to access it? It's not going to work...right? Third, I've been noticing fail authentication attempts with the user name MDaemon. Is that an actual service that I need to deal with, or is it an attempt at unauthorized access? Finally....if I've closed all ports except 25 TO the SBS box from my external firewall appliance, why am I still seeing failed authentication attempts on a daily basis?     - As Admin, I can't view my users Roaming Profiles. What add'l I set up security for Roaming profiles from the "blue book, admin companion", but I've noticed that when a user logs in, the roaming profile directory is created for that user (on the server) but I can't access it from the admin account. What add'l security do I have to add to allow me to access these dirs? I tried Admin with subdir and file permissions, but it would appear the the user account trumps it and keeps me out.     - SBS 2003 and Outlook rpc over http issue Hi, First dont reply if you dont have an answer that kinda wastes my time out here and makes me repost. SBS 2003 that has been running for 3 years with minimal issues. I have setup SBS and configured exchange on this machine years ago. Recently I tried to configure an Outlook 2003 client on Winxp with all updates to connect via RPC over HTTP with no luck. I have about 20 of these SBS machines at other locations and have never had an issue getting RPC over HTTP to work. I re-ran the email connection wizard with no luck. Checked all ports on the firewall and I have pop, smtp, ssl, vpn, sharepoint and terminal server open and are forwarding to the server. I can initiate a session via HTTPS only which works fine. However I can not get RPC to work. I have tried this on several machines and it is most definitely something that is screwed up on the server. I know for a fact that at one point this was working. I did install CRM about 2 years ago but the customer didnt want to use this after a while so I uninstalled this. I am thinking that the CRM did something to my box but I cannot seem to figure this out. I even tried my own laptop which I use to test other customers machines with no luck. I am also unable to get any windows mobile devices to connect either. It may be an issue with my certificate, authentication is setup correctly. I checked the RPC permissions in IIS and it is setup to use basic authentication for RPC requests. Any ideas? Both the server 2003 and the XP pro clients are fully patched, office 2003 is up to SP3. I have also tried to run from a Vista client with office 2007 and it still is failing. The windows mobile device is version 5 with activesynch. Any help is appreciated greatly...     - companyweb not working in RWW Hi, I've been trying to get the companyweb link within RWW to work. I've updated the companyweb using sharepoint 2.0. Works great when I'm in the domain. When I connect using RWW, I get Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage. I'm not running the RWW in sharepoint because when I do upgrade to it, I can no longer log onto RWW.     - WSUS 3.0 SP1 - can't connec to server Running SBS 2003 Premium SP2. ============== Recently rebuilt server and re-installed WSUS 3.0 SP1, but when I try to connect to the server, I get an error stating I don't have the proper permission, that I must be a member of the WSUS Administrators or WSUS Reporters groups. I checked and I am. I checked the Application log and saw several errors that I worked through. The registry key is set to port 8530, and all websites in IIS Manager are set to ASP.NET 2.0.x (although the ASP.NET tabs for the Sharepoint and WSUS websites have the version greyed out and the dates are missing. Don't know the significance).     - Cannot edit, create, or save files in any place other than my I have a pc that i just got from dell. The problem is that when I log into the server 2003 server I am unable to save files anywhere other than "my documents". If i log in as local admin i can save or change files anywhere on the c: drive. The profile that will be using this pc is currently allowed to create, edit, and save files anywhere on the pc and so are the other 30 computers in the network. I verified this by creating a txt document on the root c directory successfully while logged in as that profile. I configured the server and the security permissions which do not disallow anything regarding where files can be created or modified. None of the other pc's have this problem. We use an erp software that needs access to sme files in its install directory on the c drive but obviously am not allowed to make changes here so I am unable to run our software.
