I've eventually managed to get Adobe Reader for Pocket PC 2.0
re-installed, after it somehow became 'inactive'. But it was an
erratic and time consuming exercise. For most of the time it was shown
as installed, even directly after using the Remove facility. And at
one point it insisted there was insufficient space on my SD card,
despite there being around 1.8 B free. Etc, etc.

Anyway, although it's working, ideally I'd like to get rid of it
forever. Can anyone recommend a reliable alternative PDF reader
please, preferably free?

To go on what sort of Pocket PC? I use the version of Adobe Reader for
Pocket PC 2.0 that's customised for (and came with) my HTC TyTN II and it
seems to work fine every time I use it. Have you asked your PPC manufacturer
for 'their' version (or checked their website)? Unlike the desktop version
where it's pretty much one size fits all for a given OS, the version
provided on my PPC was slightly different to the product that used to be on
Adobes website (before the page that refers you to the OEM/Manufacturer) and
I suspect some customisation/fine tuning may be going on by manufacturers.
If you've got the wrong version for your device that may explain things. If
you've got many other software applications installed as well and one (or
more) of them are interfering with Readers functioning that may explain
things too. How did it work with just Reader installed after the last hard
reset you performed?

As far from perfect as the adobe reader is, it is the _only_ reader
which has the ability to "wrap" text to fit small mobile screens, so, if
you need to access pdf's, might reconsider.

Thanks both. I was hoping there might be a WM2003 equivalent of Foxit
Reader, which I use on my desktop PC and which is far less resource
hungry and faster to load than Acrobat. But the installation issues I
mentioned (on my iPAQ 2210) are my main motive for wanting an
alternative.

Anyone tried Clearvue, which was mentioned elsewhere as a good (but
not free) PDF reader?

It works pretty well, but as you said, is not free. The biggest drawback is
what Bev alluded to. It does not support 're-flow', which makes the text fit
the screen width. You will be doing some considerable side scrolling. You
can of course zoom in and out, but I can't read it zoomed out far enough so
that you don't have to scroll.

There was a beta Foxit ppc reader, however, Foxit (in general)
completely unaware of the wrapping needs on a pc or ppc plus it had
several other problems as well.

Clearvue, afaik, does not over text wrapping either.

OK, thanks for those follow-ups. Guess I'll stick with Acrobat! I've
shifted it to my SD card so at least its 1.3 MB is not noticeable
there.

I've not done this with DRM'd pdfs.
I import them into Mobipocket desktop and then send them to the mobipocket
reader on the PDA. It's not perfect, but it's a lot better than reading
pdfs. Especially since many of them won't reflow, even with Acrobat 2.

The key to reflowing pdf's on a ppc are "tags" and you can determine if
the document is tagged by looking at the document properties.

I agree fully that acrobat reader can be a pain and to that end I now
have "full" acrobat on my desktop and it's primary use is to generate
tagged pdfs for use on the ppc.

Despite all of ppc acrobat's problems, with tags in place on a pdf it
does a great job as a ppc reader, especially when moving around in very
large documents or searching for strings, and, the collapsible toc adds
to it's functionality.

Despite that, end up with a pdf which has partial tags or heavy document
protection and the only real option is to delete it.

Actually, if I understand what the OP wants and what you're suggesting,
there is another alternative. I use a program called Repligo which converts
the PDF file to its own format. I love it on the pda as it's VERY much
faster than Adobe and the text can be set to "snake" or reduce/wrap to the
screen size so it's easy to read. The basic version is free and there's a
much more versatile (the one I use) version which requires a payment.

>> Repligo <<

Thanks... had forgotten Repligo.

I will note that Repligo has one disadvantage, the fact that a pc is
required to preprocess documents before they can be used on a ppc.
While a downloaded or received pdf may not have tags, acrobat reader
does still have the ability to open and view them.

Yeah, my pet peeve for pda's. What I wouldn't give if Mobipocket would sync
directly to my ppc...I understand they've released a beta for the
Blackberries which downloads directly to the unit.
