I am developing a networking windows mobile application and want to find an
inexpensive and reliable windows mobile device to target. I want my
customers to be able to afford to buy the devices inexpensively. any
suggestions? i dont think i need the latest technology. are there any
models whose prices are coming down significantly? any ideas how to best
research this question?

thanks - paul

Paul,

Somewhat of a loaded question because there are a variety of devices out
there that are reasonably priced these days. If your users do not need an
integrated keyboard, I would suggest the MWg Atom Life. It is a small,
powerful device with plenty of storage room (1GB). It doesn't have a built
in keyboard (soft keyboard on the screen only) and the battery life is less
than desirable at times. Another option is the HTC Touch. It is small and
less powerful than the Atom Life but the battery life is much better. It
doesn't have a lot of storage memory however.

Look on Expansys at the various deals they have running.

Regards,

This is kind of tangential, but do you know of a Windows 5.0 or
6.0 app that does hierarchical lists like the Palm app
"BrainForest"?

If you've never heard of BrainForest, picture the PC version of
MS Word running in Outline mode - which would do everything I
have in mind.

Seconded - and get the Windows version too so you can edit lists on a PC.

But does it do hierarchies? Reading the web page, I came away
thinking it was just a flat list.

e.g.

MyList
Item1
Item2
Item3

as opposed to

myList
Item1
SubItemA
subItemB
Item2
Item3
subItemX
subItemY

Yes, it does that - take a look at this screen shot:

There's a trial download available, so you can check it out before
buying.

The "Presentation Outline" seems hierarchal to me, as evidenced in the
screenshot:

outline" thumbnail to enlarge it.)

Is that what you're looking for?

Bingo.

Thanks for looking. I must've looked right at it and just not
comprehended....

You now have to live with the burden of being personally
responsible for Yours Truly's blowing $400+ on an MWg Atom
Life..... -)

If you have a little patience, you might join me in hanging out for the
Velocity Mobile 103,
(http://www.velocitymobile.com/press/downloads/103/velocity103_02.pdf)
supposedly due sometime this quarter. According to their press release at
the CTIA show, it will be "low cost" (whatever that means!) The 103 will
have WinMo 6.1, a VGA screen, 128MB RAM, quad-band GSM, tri-band 3G, GPS,
and unlike most WinMo-based devices, will have TV/VGA output (for media or
presentations) and a front facing video calling/web cam in addition to the
usual crummy 2MP camera on the back.

It has a slick "iPhoneish" look- black with a smooth face (the display at
the device's surface, rather than the typical HTC-style "screen inside a
raised bezel" look,) and eschews the traditional D-Pad for a Blackberryesque
trackball. The only "missing" feature I can see is it lacks a QWERTY
keyboard. If that's important to you, Velocity's 111
(http://www.velocitymobile.com/press/downloads/111/velocity111_02.pdf)
will be available Q3. The 111 has the usual QVGA screen instead of VGA, but
has the Motorola Q/T-Mobile Dash smartphone form factor with landscape
screen and full QWERTY keyboard, but is a touchscreen-based WinMo
Professional device!

Usually I don't wax so poetic about vaporware/not-yet-released products, but
I'm so tired of the constant barrage of uninspiring HTC-produced
cookie-cutter WinMo phones, I'm excited to see someone, ANYONE, shake things
up a bit!

Actually, in a small way, no keyboard at all is preferable to me.

That was one "Feature" of the MWg Atom Life that caught my eye
right away.

It's not a religious issue or anything - and I was kind of
resigned to having a device that had a keyboard.... but not
having/paying for something that I'd never use appeals to me
more.

The Velocity device certainly sounds worth waiting for - what
with the VGA rez and integrated GPS...

Same here- I've been using PPCs since before they were PPCs (a Casio E-100
"Palm-Sized PC") and I get around just fine on the soft keyboard. When I
bought my T-Mobile MDA (a rebadged HTC Wizard) it was because it was a
heavily subsidized carrier-branded device. I really wanted (at the time)
the I-Mate "Jamin" which was the Wizard but without the slide out keyboard
(and a 1/4" thinner!) However, a $250 subsidized phone with keyboard
trumped a $700 unlocked unsubsidized one without!

As to the Wizard's keyboard, I rarely use it. When I do, I find my self
ironically needing to pull up the soft keyboard anyway to enter a symbol
that isn't availalbe on the limited number of hard keys!

> That was one "Feature" of the MWg Atom Life that caught my eye

I looked at the Atom Life myself- it hits a pretty sweet spot between
features and price.

Agreed. I guess what frustrates me is that the "state of the art" has
seemingly gone nowhere in three or four years. VERY few PDA phones match
the specs of decent standalone PPCs of 2003. Just when the standalone was
being killed off by the convergence devices, VGA was beoming common, yet you
can probably count the number of VGA phones released in the last 3-4 years
on one hand! Sure, they've added 3G and GPS to a bunch of models, but so
has every $100 subsidized "dumbphone" these days!

In 2008 I should be awestruck by the capability of new models instead of
saying "wow, it's ALMOST as nice as an old Dell Axim!" ;-)

> The Velocity device certainly sounds worth waiting for - what
> with the VGA rez and integrated GPS...

The VGA and video out are doing for me. The VGA screen will make remote
desktop look useable, and TV/VGA Out will allow it to do presentations
without a laptop, and make it a perfect Zune/iPod replacement. If the thing
has USB host mode (the specs don't say), I'd probably trade my first-born
for it. The ability to connect an external hard drive, flash card reader,
and full-sized PC keyboard on one end and a monitor to the other will make
it a 4" laptop ;-)

The upcoming Sony Xperia X1
(http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/products/mobilephones/overview/x1) looks
nice too, but I expect it to be pricier. It will have an 800x480 landscape
screen, USB host, slideout keyboard, but seems to lack video out.
