The desktop connection is propriatary, so whatever you want to do, you are
stuck with ActiveSync...

You might check out a SyncML client. SyncML is a platform-independent
Contacts/Calendar/Tasks over-the-internet sync system used primarily by
"dumbphones", but there are clients available for Windows Mobile, and plug
ins for various desktop PIMs. You'd sync both devices against a server
(many free ones like scheduleworld.com or zyb.com exist.)

Funambol.com offers free clients, which are a lot more stable than they used
to be. Commercial ones are available as well. I'm using Funambol
currently, sync'd with Scheduleworld.com to keep two WinMo phones, a desktop
and three laptops (all rumming Outlook) in sync. I haven't sync'd my phone
to my desktop with Activesync for over a month now.

But AFAIK, SyncML can't sync to a desktop directly. If you wan't server
sync, there are several open source options

Correct- you sync over the internet via plug-ins to various desktop PIMs,
like Outlook or Thunderbird.

I'm synching two WinMo devices and four PCs (running Outlook) with a
Funambol server (rather than Exchange.)

And best of all, you can do it wirelessly, something Microsoft doesn't
seem to be able to manage (note: we don't run Exchange)

...any more, at least... Activesync worked just fine wirelessly up to v3.8.

I waited very patiently for wireless sync (without Exchange) to be brought
back in some form, but it seems that's not going to happen. SyncML does
pretty much everything I need Exchange to do, and doesn't lock me in to all-
MS products, particularly on the mobile device side.

I run a non-Exchange mail server that provides a SyncML interface, plus
a Outlook sync client (Not SyncML based, it actually syncs the TNEF
data), plus a decent web interface.

It works great, and unlike the older ActiveSync versions, it doesn't
need my PC running and a VPN client or a new port open to make it work
either, I can sync anywhere that has HTTPS (port 443) access.

Kudos to Microsoft for pushing me to look for third party solutions.
