Hi

I have been trying in vain to configure my Dell Axim X5 (WM2003) with the
Enfora GSM0110 Compact Flash GSM modem with my sim from Three UK which came
supplied with the Three USB Broadband Modem.

I can find no reason why this SIM shouldn't be usable with the Enfora but the
default WM2003 dial-up wizard only allows input of the dial-up number (*99#)
and the user name and password (which I believe should be blank or guest and
guest - neither works). In the advance settings I am inputting the extra dial-
string modem commands as follows

+cgdcont=1,"IP","three.co.uk" and the rest of the settings as advised by
Enfora's guide.

I am unable to connect with those settings. I note from Three that CHAP
authentication is needed for connecting and the WM2003 wizard shows no security
settings options.

Is there any third party dialer software that will allow configuration of CHAP
security on a connection to this modem? Or is there a way of making the
existing wizard configure the security settings? Or is it possible the SIM
cannot be used outside the USB modem? It does work in a Three contract phone.
I am fairly convinced it is simply an authentication issue.

Thanks in advance for any help

I'm not familiar with the Enfora, but earlier cards didn't work in WM2003
without special dialing apps to handle the settings. A quick Google search
shows that the Enfora comes with a program called BVRP Mobile Phone Tools.
Generally these CF card makers don't toss $50 apps in unless you need them!

IIRC, those settings are in the Phone Edition devices, but not standalone
PPCs. (Those settings should probably be handled by the card driver, not
the PPC, I assume.)

BVRP is now "AvanQuest.com"- you might try the trial version of their Phone
Tools software and see if it works.

Good luck!

This card works fine with WM2003 I believe but you may be correct in the
software direction!

The settings come from Enfora - the info from three.co.uk

I just came across that as you replied - thanks! Let's see if it works!

Not so far :-(

Anyone have any more advice?

I mean the CHAP vs. PEAP settings. Those aren't in a standalone PPC, AFAIK.
In a typical setup (connecting to an external mobile phone) the phone would
handle that part of the config, so I assume in your setup, the card would
have to handle that, (but the PPC seems unable to "tell" it to. That's why
I assume you'll need the 3rd party software , unless the card came with a
driver setting plug-in that installed in the PPC Settings menu.)

Let us know- those Enfora cards can be had fairly inexpensively now.

You have it in one I think. The downloaded software (pocket phone tools) has no
option for CHAP or PEAP or otherwise. It has more options than the WM2003
default connection manager but not the required security settings. I had a
similar problem with a wi-fi card bought for the same device. I was unable to
connect to several networks due to WPA security (WM2003 not supporting this)
but thankfully the excellent OAC client solved that and works a treat. I find
it difficult to believe that (if this is an authentication problem) is not
solveable.

They can be had very cheap but not widely available used it would seem. I will
report my findings!

After delving into Enfora's documentation for this adapter I came across th=
e=20
following info for AT commands re authentication.

"AT%CGPPP=3D<pt>
<pt> 0 - No authentication (ignore login + pwd)
1 - PAP
2 - CHAP
3 - automatic authentication
The following command sets the authentication format and parameters.

AT%CGPCO=3D<n>,=E2=80=9D<authentication format>=E2=80=9D,<cid>

<n> 0 - Inputs specified in Hexadecimal
1 - Inputs specified in ASCII

<Authentication format> Authentication format (ASCII),
<username>,<password> where
Username: Maximum 16 bytes ASCII string.
Password: Maximum 16 bytes ASCII string.

Authentication format(Hexadecimal):
Protocol Configuration Option specified in Hex value; maximum size is equal=
to=20
256 bytes.
<cid> 0 =E2=80=93 The new username, password, and protocol type is to be ap=
plied to all=20
context Activation.
1 =E2=80=93 Context ID zero.
2 =E2=80=93 Context ID one.

Example:
ASCII format for all define contexts, username: johndoe, password: tornado.
AT%CGPCO=3D1,=E2=80=9Djohndoe,tornado=E2=80=9D,0

The %CGPCO command parameters can be provided in both hexadecimal and ASCII=
=20
formats. The command allows for the simultaneous use of two context activat=
ions=20
and unique login parameters for each.

Please check with your network provider to determine the transparency type.
If the PAD is being used on a transparent network, it will function properl=
y=20
without having to be concerned with the username and password."

Can anyone tell me how to input this to the modem directly using terminal=
=20
software such as PockeTTY as the dial string is now going to exceed the 22=
=20
character limitation of WM2003.

Thanks in advance
