Set ActiveSync to translate pwi when copying from PDA to desktop.

And there lies the dilemna...What I have been doing is saving the notes on my
SD Card....popping the card out and reading it off a card reader in the
PC....I havent installed Active Sync on the Corporate PC.

Are you typing the notes or writing them with a stylus?

If you are typing them, there are several replacements that will save as
standard ascii files (tombo being one of my favorites, but there are
plenty).

For example,
http://www.pocketpcfreeware.com/en/index.php?soft=105
http://www.pocketpcfreeware.com/en/index.php?soft=1283

If you are writing them, there are several applications that will save the
notes to a standard graphic format, such as svg or jpg.

For Example:
http://www.pocketpcfreeware.com/en/index.php?soft=1351

There a lot out there, the ideal is to consider using another program than
the included notes. Another thing to consider about using a 3rd party that
stores in a standard format is that you email it to anyone directly from the
device without a problem, and back it up without worrying about a format
change.

Suggest looking at

http://BevHoward.com/ASync.htm#Notes

and

http://BevHoward.com/bhhpj.htm#Record

Essentially, notes are pwi files on the ppc but "outlook objects" when
they are synced and the above go into detail on what's happening and
some options.

A similar (if not identical) question has appeared elsewhere, for example
http://forums.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/showpost.aspx?postid=3231806&siteid=65&sb=0&d=1&at=7&ft=11&tf=0&pageid=0
I've copied and pasted my work around below:

I experienced similar problems and have the current work around.

Set ActiveSync file conversion to convert .pwi files to .rtf files. I
initially thought this would lose the sketch/graphics but I've just tried it
and both graphics and recorded sound were there (sound in form of clickable
icon).
I've also set ActiveSync to convert .rtf files from the desktop to into .pwi
files on the mobile. As a quick check I renamed the file and then copied it
back to the mobile and it seemed complete. But I hadn't made any changes to
it on the desktop.

Tools - Advanced Tools - Edit File Conversion Settings...
Select Device to Desktop
Select InkWriter/Note Taker/Notes Document
Select Edit
Convert to desktop computer files of the type:
Select Type: Rich Text Format (*.rtf)
OK

Select Desktop to Device
Select RTF File
Select Edit
Convert to mobile device files of the type:
Select Type: InkWriter/Note Taker/Notes Document (*.pwi)
OK
OK

I'm using :
Windows Mobile 6
ActiveSync 4.5.0
MS Wordpad 5.1

I haven't tried MS Word of any kind since I don't use it. OpenOffice.org
opens the .rtf file and includes the graphics and a sound symbol but doesn't
appear to play the sound, I shall investigate that further.

Hope that helps.

Might take a look at http://BevHoward.com/bhhpj.htm#Record

The germain point is;

"For the techies out there, the embedded object in a notes.pwi file is
actually a complete .wav file. If you go in with a HEX editor, you can
find the wav file header information and copy from that point to the end
of the sound binary code (fairly easy to spot) then create a new file
from that clip with a .wav file extension and it will play as a normal
wav file. The same is not true for sound objects embedded in other file
types such as pWord... it is my guess that in these cases, the wav file
is in the PIM database."

Hmm. I've just realised that in my enthusiasm to try and help I'm just
repeating what Thurman said to do. I apologise for confusing the issue.

Since John says "I havent installed Active Sync on the Corporate PC." I
assume that that isn't possible. I seem to recall reading about a portable
version of ActiveSync, would that help?

Also note that I've written a program to extract all these files. As my app
is CF-based, it runs on both WM and desktop Windows. See

Could you change to keeping your notes in Word Mobile? On m iPAQ I can
re-program the record note button to active Word Mobile and create a text
note in Word Mobile. OK, the only advantage of changing the button setting is
to make it bit easier.

That way your note would be in .doc or .docx format.

I've proved myself wrong.

The ActiveSync conversion doesn't work 100%.

I've just tried copying another file across with a more complicated sketch
and it lost the ink / sketch.

So I tried another one and the conversion failed "Cannot convert file
'Example1'. The fie converter did not find the expected data while writing
the output file."

Now that is pretty annoying. Considering how long people have been having
problems with this I'd've thought a responsible company would have come up
with a fix.

Thanks for the tip but the problems I'm currently experiencing aren't
specifically related to the sound portion of the file.

a) ink / sketch removed from converted file
b) error whilst trying to convert file with ink, text and sound

To be honest extracting sound from the .pwi isn't a priority for me, If I'm
recording sound it tends to be just sound so the Mobile uses .wav format. I
do tend to use sketches / ink mixed in with text though, and that's appears
to be the problem part. I haven't tried your tool for this reason, unless it
does extract the other parts?

Nope, it only extracts sound. Sorry for the confusion.
