I have a Ipaq 200, which among other things, I would like to be able
to use for Skype.

I have a bluetooth earpeice which I have already paired to the Ipaq
200, and that works pretty well, but what I would like to do is use a
mini usb headset that also has a mic on it, and simply plug this into
the mini usb connector at the bottom of the device.

This is both for quality, as a usb audio device is sure going to sound
a lot better than a bluetooth device, and also because if it plugs
into the device, I do not have to worry about charging a bluetooth
device.

I will be using the device with Skype quite often, and it would be so
nice to simply plug in a device.

You can buy lots of USB headset/mic combos for a PC/laptop, but is
this even an option for a Windows Mobile 6 device such as the Ipaq
200?

Does the mini usb device on the Ipaq 200 even support devices such as
a headset/mic?

I have searched around, and I have not found anything. I am hoping
that somebody has some more information on this.

Thank you in advance for any information.

Mini-USB headsets do exist but I would imagine each handset would be
different as to whether they are supported. I would guess that many (maybe
all) would only support data and charge through the USB.
Unless someone here can testify that it works for your model, the best thing
to do would be to try one.
Not sure where you are, but here in the UK you can purchase an item online
and if it does not fit your requirements you can send it back within 7 days
for a refund.

try googling "HTC mini USB pinout"

Several sites show the mini USB pinouts for the HTC phones, which DO
support headset/mic combos, so if you can borrow a HTC headset, see if
it works.

If the headset doesn't work, at least you've tried.

While there are usb connections in that connector, it is not a standard
"usb" connector such as

<http://pinouts.ru/connector/5_pin_mini-USB_jack_connector.shtml>

but rather a combo connector which contains usb, stereo audio, mic,
switch and antenna pins. It _looks_ as if this may be becoming a
"standard" as it is labeled "Extended Mini B"

One caution... don't plug unknown connectors into your device without
confirming that they are compatible... example, some of the IMates used
the same physical connector as the Ipaqs but with different pinouts
which would severely damage if powered and plugged into the wrong device.

Although Beverly's reply suggests the HTC extended mini USB may be
becoming a standard, I would not expect one only on devices made by
HTC. Does HTC make iPAQs for HP?

Very few Windows Mobile devices support USB host, which is required to
use peripherals (such as a headset). They are set up to support USB
client, so they can be peripheral devices.

Your iPAQ has a standard 3.5 mm stereo headphone jack that will work
with any wired headphone that uses standard 3.5 mm stereo plugs.
Simple converters can add support for headphones with 2.5 mm or 1/4"
stereo plugs.

The label name came from the XDA developers site image showing the
pinouts and wiring diagram of the audio out circuit board;

Since there has been virtually zero connector standardization in windows
mobile since day one, the hope that some sort of standard "all in one"
connector remains strong. only recently has the use of the usb
"standard" connectors appeared and they don't offer any audio standard
connectivity.

imho, one of the strongest points for the ipod is not only that it uses
a standardized connector where the male portion has apparently been
released free to mfg's, it contains _so_ many options which radically
expand the value of the device... usb, audio in/out, video, control...

imho, If ms would provide a standard connector spec with the same goals
it would greatly enhance the platform.

>> Does HTC make iPAQs for HP? <<

Don't have a clue... HP did provide the only ppc connector standard afaik.

Oops. Please omit the "not", so the last phrase reads "I would expect

This doesn't really have anything to do w/ USB host support...

The hx4700 had a combined Jack socket; that is, one that also accepts 3.5mm
headphones with a microphone input. Looking at the socket of my 210 and
comparing it to my 210, it seems the 210 also has this input (but I'm not
sure - will test it later with a real headset). That is, instead of an
extended USB headset, you can use either a real 3.5mm headset or an extended
USB headset with a 3.5mm -> eUSB converter.

So just to make sure I understand this right, the 3.5mm jack on the
ipaq 200 is not just a standard audio out for the use of headphones,
but also a microphone in?

So if I take the 2.5mm headset i have for my cell phone, and simply
get a stero 2.5mm to 3.5mm converted plug then I should be able to
plug this into the ipaq and not just have audio but also a microphone?

That would be great. I am not partial to usb, it's just the only
thing I thought would work, if this works, that would be great.

Some devices are using this (great!) approach...

The audio jack and the headset uses a four conductor 1/8" audio plug and
socket... essentially an extra "ring" on the ground section of the plug
which connects to the mic circuit.

_If_ you use the stereo headset which I assume ships with the unit, you
have stereo audio plus mic...

...and, if you plug in a "standard" 1/8" stereo headset, it works
without needing an adapter.

The JasJar was where I first saw this.

The same is true for many of the 3/32" mini headset jacks... they will
accept and work with a standard monoral headset but have the extra ring
in the jack to provide stereo audio out.

I don't seem to recall receiving any type of headset or microphone
with this unit. I will look in the box again (when I find it...), but
I am pretty sure nothing like that came with this unit.

It's a good idea, although in practice, it's not quite as compatible as
you might hope.

Toss and iPhone into nearly any older device, it will want to go into
airplane mode (turning off all radios) before using the device. Some
devices work anyway, some do not.

Despite showing a "charging" icon, not all accessories can charge all
iPods/iPhones as there are two different power inputs, 12V and 5V, and
not all iPods support both.

It's a step in the right direction, and it's better then the
mix-and-match WinMo world, but it's not the paradise it looks from
outside.

You're probably correct. Typically headsets are included with Windows
Mobile phones, but not with standalone PDAs.

(Having said that, my AT&T Tilt phone didn't include a headset- disturbing
considering it uses a proprietary mini-USB jack and AT&T doesn't sell either
a compatible headset or an adapter!)

I actually entered the land of pod since that post by purchasing a nano
for my wife's birthday... been an interesting ride.

While I stand by my feeling that a common connector is a great idea,
seems that apple has closed some other doors... notably the inability to
access the video output except by using an apple dock/splitter product.

>> 12v/5v <<

At least things are condensing around the usb 5v standard.

Re: Mini USB headset with microphone for Ipaq 200? Does it exist? by Beverly

Beverly
Mon Aug 11 16:37:00 PDT 2008

I've seen this on several devices, both 3/32" and 1/8" jacks.

The approach is to split the "ground ring" into two sections... if you
plug a standard 1/8" audio plug into that, the mic is ground and ignored.

Conversely, the same is done on the 3/32" headset jacks... the ground is
split and one section is used for the additional stereo output so
monoral 3/32" jacks will work as well.

Back to the Jasjar, one trick is to use an audio headset and hold the
brick as a handheld microphone.

Slowly.

Too many manufacturers get confused along the way though and add quirky
standards (Motorola, I'm looking at you) that refuse to charge straight
5V, or don't properly isolate themselves and get damaged (HTC TyTN II)
when the power drops.

But there is progress, anyway. 5V, 12V and 110VAC are all good places
to start standardizing though, most of my office lighting is on 12V
supplies, plus it's obviously compatible with vehicles.
