Hi - Recently purchased the HTC Touch, i used to have a Nokia N series
prior (which i gave to my father), I live in India and travel a lot by
trains for my job/ personal. ( not the local, but from city to city..
combination of cost and fear of flying ...)

anyways, one of the features on the Nokia used to be the cell tower
information that can be displayed on the phone and each time as i
cross to a different area, i get the location on my cellphone and doze
of to sleep saying to myself, ok another 4 hrs to go. But for the life
of me, although HTC Touch is such a cool looking smartphone, this one
feature is not there.

I have tried various apps like Mobiletracker, Tinygps, googlemaps (my
location), but gives no inclination on the same and does not provide
the information atleast something that can be displayed on the "Today"
screen .

no major issue, but would be pretty cool if it could be done on the
HTC Touch, lemme know, if any of you folks have any similar apps for
Windows Mobile 5 or 6 applications that can be integrated to this.
Your suggestions, recommendations woould be most welcome.

Thanks for your time

If your "Touch" is on Sprint then you might be interested in the following

You didn't mention if you have Mobile 5 or 6. Mobile 6 allows the GPS icon
in the Start/Settings/System folder. Some programs require that icon to be
visible and 'tunable'. In Mobile 5, it required 'fiddling' with settings
>without hacking the registry< etc. Once exposed, external/internal GPS
would work.

It appears the free www.google.com/gmm program looks for it in Mobile 6 even
though it is using the cell towers for approximation.

It works in the U.S. with an accuracy varying from 100 yards to ~1/2 mile.
If you download and it doesn't work, try combinations of 'External GPS'.

Also note there are 'lipstick sized' GPS units shipping now with built-in
display, recorder and Bluetooth for ~$89 USD.

I feel it's very safe to say that the OP, who lives and works in INDIA, is
not using Sprint as a carrier! ;-)

Yeah, probably his best bet would be to get a BT GPS like someone else
mentioned since it will work with "Google Maps for Mobile."

I found a doc that tells the basics on how to set up a Bluetooth GPS for
WM5.
http://www.usglobalsat.com/downloads/Bluetooth%20GPS%20Set-Up%20Guide.pdf

For WM6 all you have to do is go Settings->System->External GPS and set it
for the same comport you assigned to the GPS device in the above
instructions.

One neat feature about "Google Maps for Mobile" is after you tell it to "Use
GPS" it shows how many GPS satellites have been found in a status in the
upper right hand corner of the map. It will say something like: "GPS active
(7)" indicating it found 7 satellites.

Got a HTC P3600, so....
Yup, did all that. (plus check the 'district' check box)
but where does the info get displayed?

Wondering out loud if there is possibly a three digit cellular number
which would report the current tower?

try googling "cell broadcast on HTC Touch" - there's a description of
what is required.
Jitesh has already replied showing you, but India may have a different
code. It's 050 (or 50) in Australia
google has a lot of info on "cell broadcast"

Following on from the last post, it may depend on your provider if you
actually get any SMS cell broadcasts. They mightn't have that facility
