My wife has decided that she wants a wi-fi card for her ipaq 2215. Are there
any reviews of all the SD and CF cards that talks about compatibility and
overall performance of different PPC wi-fi cards?

My other question is where to get one- I looked on NewEgg, but the only SD
or CF card I could find
(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833360015) is out of
stock (and has been for a while). Can anyone suggest other sources of
relatively inexpensive SD or CF wifi cards that would be compatible with a
2003 device? The ones on Ebay seem to be priced about the same as the brand
new newegg card.

Embedded extra memory isn't critical, as we use both CF and SD memory, so
she'll still have plenty of resources on the PPC. Plus, she can always swap
out the wifi card if she needs something from her sd memory card(s).

We do have an encrypted DSL wireless router at home, so we need something
that will support basic encryption (WEP? I don't recall offhand which type
it is we have) as well as open connections when she is in coffee shops, etc.

Thanks for any information,
Keith

You can use either CF or SD wifi cards...

In either case, recommend looking for socket brands as their ppc drivers
tended to be the "standards"

since the drivers are critical, strongly recommend confirming
prepurchase that 2003 drivers are either with or available for the card
you intend to buy... for example, most CF card brands were vended before
2003 and most did not provide driver updates.

Most of the SD wifi cards were rebrands of the same hardware and many
people ended up using the socket drivers, but, the last time I looked,
they were no longer on the socket site.

I've had three of the symbol LA4137 CF cards in a 2215.
One worked perfectly.
One worked with SOME of my acces point/routers some of the time.
One wouldn't work with ANY of my access points, but worked fine at
hot-spots.
As far as I could determine from data available to view on the 2215,
they were identical firmware versions. ON a spectrum analyzer, they
seemed to have the same output power and hopped the same frequencies.
Go figure...

Whatever you get, make sure you can get drivers for whatever you need
today or expect to need in the future. Some of the older cards won't
work with newer versions of wince.

Lately, I've been able to buy PDA's with built-in wireless cheaper
than the ebay cost of a wifi card.

the symbol cf cards were the same hardware as the sockets... and, seem
to remember that the socket drivers were usable and better.

I had some serious problems with the first symbol I had (caused hard
resets) and worked with symbol who eventually sent a replacement...
which never had a problem.

An aside... the worst event with that card was when the jornada fell off
a bedside table with the card inserted... it hit the floor card first...
and the force separated the card socket from the motherboard.

IIRC, Symbol just repackaged the Socket drivers in their own installer, but
I might be wrong- it's been a long time!

I've had excellent luck with my Symbol. I bought it on eBay three or four
years ago ("new old stock") while my Ambicom was being replaced under
warranty during a model revision (I waited 3 months for a replacement.)
The Ambi worked ok, but the Symbol/Socket used a lot less power- that was
very important to me with my Audiovox Maestro and it's 900mAh battery.
From a full charge it ran to a "Main Battery Critically Low" shutdown in 45-
60 minutes with the Ambicom and D-Link cards I used previously! I could
get almost an hour and a half with the Socket. (I used to joke that the
Audiovox didn't have true "wireless" internet capability, since it needed
an AC cord to use WiFi!)

I've used that Symbol in my NEC Mobile Pro (HPC 2000 MIPS), two Windows
laptops, the Audiovox (PPC 2K2) and my Dell Axim X5 (2003).
