    - Unit Converter with Currency Exchange and Calipers Posted since the mobile need for a converter, especially currency, has been asked for here in the past. A mobile mvp (Dwayne Lamb) has just released a $20 Unit Converter application which includes a currency converter with downloadable currency exchange rates. <http://bettermeasure.com> Contains a lot of options, so, navigation may take some time to learn. From what I have seen so far (less than an hour's use) it will replace my current unit/currency converter. Appreciate neat tools? Checkout its screen measuring tool... once calibrated to your screen, very exact measurements within your ppc's screen size are a snap.     - Remove Windows Live from Windows Mobile 6.0 TMobile Wing On my T-Mobile Wing PDA Phone, I clicked Start > Programs > Windows Live. I did not want to install this and selected cancel. However, it installed, adding lots of icons to my Start menu and a Windows Live email account to Messaging. I need to remove this but there is no link in the Remove Programs service to remove it. In Messaging, I can click and hold and get a DELETE button on every email account, except Windows Live which is grayed out. T-Mobile customer support was unable to figure out how to uninstall and suggested I contact Microsoft but I cannot find anything in the support or knowledge base sections of the Microsoft site to answer this question.     - WMDC Problems Using TyTN II, Vista Home Premium Background: Tried using WMDC 6.1 months ago and had the same sync issues that many others experienced. Read that going back to 6.0 solved problems. Installed 6.0 and everything worked fine until 2 days ago when I discovered that all calendar information disappeared from PDA. Did a restore on the PDA from prior day's backup to get calendar data back on PDA. Later that day, I hooked phone up to laptop to do a sync. Received error message on the phone that sync failed. When I opened WMDC to check things out, I discovered that the options for Calendar and Contacts no longer existed in the menu of items to sync. They just totally disappeared. I uninstalled WMDC and reinstalled 6.0. I opened WMDC and verified that 6.0 was intalled. Then I hooked up PDA to laptop. Device drivers started installing. When done, I opened WMDC. Not only were the Contact & Calendar options still missing, but now my WMDC version is 6.1 and obviously it still won't sync. I'm totally at a loss.     - Missing Ink Notes When I write a message on my Mobile 6 equipped phone, I can not view it on the PC - this was not a problem with older version... Even new notes - anything drawn - will not show up when viewed on the PC - I just see an empty note... Help - what gives? Do I have to update to Office 2007 to see ink ???     - Sync problem: Windows Mobile 6 <> Intellisync Mobile Suite <> Novell The equipment: - HTC Touch running Windows Mobile 6 and Intellisync Mobile Suite (IMS). - (Work) PC running Windows XP pro, Novell GroupWise. The problem: If I create an appointment on the HTC, let's say at 10.00 > sync via IMS > the appointment is shown in my (GroupWise) calendar at 09.00 (- one hour).     - Friend cannot sync his new AT&T Tilt (8925) I have a friend that just purchased an AT&T Tilt (8925) PDA with phone. Itâ??s running Windows Mobile 6 Professional. I have the same unit so he came to me for answers that, unfortunately, I couldnâ??t answer. So, here I am, trying to get some answers for him. OK, his problem is that he cannot sync his unit to his computer. He copied all of his contacts over from his old simm card but he cannot sync his computer. He installed all of the software as directed but, by default, all of his sync options are grayed out and cannot be selected. He does have one selection made. File syncing is selected but also grayed out so he canâ??t change anything about it. Also, the files that are synced say theyâ??re read-only. Heâ??s checked the file properties and they do not appear to be read-only but if he tries to modify a Mobile Word or Excel file on his computer and then save it, heâ??s prompted to change the name because the file is read-only. Weâ??ve checked all the settings we can on his computer and on his PDA but can find nothing whatsoever that will allow him to sync his PDA. Has anyone else experienced a problem similar to this? Iâ??d like to be able to help my friend but I donâ??t know what else to try. Any assistance anyone might be able to provide would be most appreciated. He is running Vista Home Premium on his computer and is using the 90-day trial version of Outlook 2007 that came with his PDA. That brings up another question. Iâ??ve never owned a Windows Mobile PDA/Smartphone that didnâ??t come with a full version of Outlook. I hadnâ??t noticed this when I received my AT&T Tilt because I already have Office 2007 Enterprise installed. What the heck is he supposed to do after 90 days?! It seems like a lot to sell someone a high dollar PDA with phone and then expect them to shell out another $90 to purchase a full version of Outlook.     - How To Avoid Multiple Instances Hi I am writing a windows mobile application using embedded VB. Can anyone suggest a way to avoid "multiple instances" of the application. On reading on web they emphasise the usage of SetForeGroundWindow and FindWindow API's. But i think if somehow I can manage to get the list of currently running processes on the device, I should be able to stop execution of second instance. in between System.Diagnostics.Process.GetProcesses method is not available in embedded VB, so any other alternative to resolve this..     - another battery problem I have Ipaq 2210 about 4 years old, with 2003 SE. Two old batteries, one original and one copy, both charge to 100% but work short. I`ve bought two new, both made in China. At the first charging they go to 100%, but after every next charging percent drops with 10%-unit. At last percent is only about 20 and Ipaq gives warning - low battery. The wall charger gives 5.0 V as should be , USB charging is not better. Original HP battery has 1400 mAh, the copies 1600 mAH.     - Unable to Copy From PC to PDA This should be simple to solve but I can't find the answer elsewhere: I have an HP PDA, my friend has the same or almost the same PDA, running the same OS. We both have the same version of Active Sync. We're both running XP on our desktop. I can copy files to my PDA. He can't. For him: Using edit/copy on the PC doesn't enable paste on the PDA. Dragging from a PC window to an Active Sync window shows the international no symbol meaning "you can't drop that here." I can edit/copy and edit/paste without problem. I can drag and drop.     - Alarms without sound needed on PDA! On my desktop I have set a lot of alarms that go off silently, i.e. I get an alert popup, but there is no sound being played. In Outlook 2002/XP one can achieve this by setting a reminder but unchecking the "play this sound" checkbox. I am using such alarms a lot to remind myself of birthdays (the corresponding agenda entries are created automatically by Outlook), anniversaries and other events that should not go forgotten. When I sync such agenda entries to my PDA, however, these alerts will invariably go off with a sound which is especially nasty when they go off at midnight (at which time we usually are already asleep)and I thus fear that my wife will sooner or later smash my PDA against the next wall, if these alerts keep going off during the night. :-( Is there a possibility in to define "silent" alerts on a WM6 device? By "silent" I mean alerts that produce a popup and/or a reminder but without sound? Ideally this options should be synched with the calendar item, so that one wouldn't have to think about it again after synchronization! Or can one define a general "silence period" during which there will be no alerts (or rather: alerts will go off either before or after that period)?     - PDF reader? I've eventually managed to get Adobe Reader for Pocket PC 2.0 re-installed, after it somehow became 'inactive'. But it was an erratic and time consuming exercise. For most of the time it was shown as installed, even directly after using the Remove facility. And at one point it insisted there was insufficient space on my SD card, despite there being around 1.8 B free. Etc, etc. Anyway, although it's working, ideally I'd like to get rid of it forever.     - With WMDC can you only sync from PC to smartphone? I have a MOTO Q running wm5. PC running vista home premium. Can't seem to sync my contacts with my pc. I have outlook 2003. In wmdc "change my sync settings" it says "sync FROM pc". I want to sync FROm my phone to the pc and vice versa at times.     - HX2795 Screen Calibration I've just about had it! My four month old HP is losing the stylus calibration of the screen. I did a clear reset (lost all programs and settings) when it first happened last week, and did a recalibration (ie: touch X's etc). Now it's off again! The battery shows 80% power, so all should be OK. Can anyone out there offer a solution? If not, I'll no longer sink good money into a Palm or HP and will carry a small notebook. Too bad.     - Cingular internet to text options going, gone? fwiw, another one of those "can't quite get there from here" scenarios; Cingular had two internet to text message domains which allowed email to be sent from any email client to a cingular cell phone; <cellnumber>@CingularME.com and <cellnumber>@mobile.mycingular.com The acquisition by at&t added a third; <cellnumber>@txt.att.net While all of the above work (at the moment) for someone to send text _to_ your phone, their digital coded "reply" addresses are confusing, broken or severely delayed, plus the two cingular addresses have changed behavior since I started using them. The @CingularME.com address includes a binary "reply to" number which is accepted without argument by the system if you send a reply... however, it appears to "black hole" the relies... sent a couple of test replies to messages from this address earlier this morning and they have yet to arrive. The "36245" sender address coming with mail sent via the last two addresses above is at&t's 5 digit code for "Mail" ("6245" is "Mail" on the number pad) ...if you simply send a reply to that number, it will fail. To use "36245" return address, you must manually put the "to" email address(es) in the reply message's subject line but that's not clear to the user in the original message or on AT&T's web site. Now for the final kicker... if the received message is from someone who used the @txt.att.net address, the sender's email address is not included in the text message. so, for the moment, your internet text mail correspondents need to use the @CingularME.com address as that includes the email address ...unless you know their email address by heart.     - 4150 ROM Udpate Failed Hello, I have the exact problem in this discussion: http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.pocketpc/browse_thread/thread/6dd012985ff6fcfd/a948f48c65319cb6?hl=en&lnk=gst&q=4150+ROM#a948f48c65319cb6 His computer restarted (like mine) during ROM update.. not my iPAQ will not boot, stuck with the screen 1.05H 1.02 and HP logo. I've read lots of people, including the thread I linked, were able to fix this by flashing the ROM from the SD card, using mtty. When I launch mtty, I do not get the option to connect to the device no matter what I do..     - PPC 2003 (Ipaq 2215) compatible wifi card list? My wife has decided that she wants a wi-fi card for her ipaq 2215. Are there any reviews of all the SD and CF cards that talks about compatibility and overall performance of different PPC wi-fi cards? My other question is where to get one- I looked on NewEgg, but the only SD or CF card I could find (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833360015) is out of stock (and has been for a while). Can anyone suggest other sources of relatively inexpensive SD or CF wifi cards that would be compatible with a 2003 device? The ones on Ebay seem to be priced about the same as the brand new newegg card. Embedded extra memory isn't critical, as we use both CF and SD memory, so she'll still have plenty of resources on the PPC. Plus, she can always swap out the wifi card if she needs something from her sd memory card(s). We do have an encrypted DSL wireless router at home, so we need something that will support basic encryption (WEP?     - Delete Task categories? I've had PocketBreeze installed on my iPAQ 2210 for several years. I thought I'd just tidy up some of its settings, starting with deleting a few unwanted task categories. But darned if can find out how to do it. PB uses the 'default' Tasks program built-in to WM2003. But neither in the settings for that nor in the settings for PB itself can I see how to delete a category.     - Switching on overnight, discharging battery My iPAQ 2210 is for some reason switching itself on overnight. The first time I discovered this I wrote it off as a minor issue. But it happened again last night when I'd forgotten to replace it in its cradle. This morning it wouldn't switch on until I reset it, and then gave me the warning that battery was too low.     - Alarm Notification Hi, Not for the first time, my pocket pc (Mio 550, WM5) is having a problem with the alarm notification. The alarm works at the right time but the "notification" soft key does not show and I cannot switch the alarm off or snooze. The LED starts flashing and never stops (until I hook it up to the comouter for synchronisation). Soft reset does not work. When I do connect for synchronization, the "notification" soft key does come up for a second. Pressing it does not seem to help. This did not happen right after installing some new piece of software. It was fairly old by the time this happened, so I didn't bother to see about a new cradle.     - Getting to voicemail on Tilt To me a touch-screen is about having the ability to get right to the information that I see on the screen. That's the minimum a touch-screen device has to offer. Of course, it is possible to get a lot more creative with touch-screen interface as demonstrated by various iPhone apps. I am not sure why I am not able to tap open the voice mail on my AT&T Tilt. Not to mention having access to a lot of developer applications, which up to now has held back since the pentration rate of flash lite on winmo was less than ideal. But knowing that it would be in place and supported - sweet. But I would be wrong to not point out that it also moves PPCs closer to the smartphone group.. a pretty sandbox for your penance...     - Where is the End key in Windows Mobile? I am so enraged at the number of bugs and un-features in Win Mobile that I'm numbering 'em. Complaint no. 3: Where is the End key on the keyboard? For example, how do you add words onto the end of a sentence residing in a cell in Mobile Excel? When you tap on a cell thereby bringing up its contents at top, the cursor is at the BEGINNING of the cell's string. How do you get to the end of the string? (It took me several months to realize that I can sequentially tap Ctrl then Right to jump forward word-by-word. But that's still tedious. And as usual, Microflot makes it worse by, once you reach the end of the visible portion of the string, not scrolling the off-the-screen portion to which you are next scrolling into view until AFTER you've scrolled.     - Where is the symbol for "1/2" on the keyboard? I have so many complaints about Win Mobile that I've started numbering them (even tho' I've submitted many complaints into this group already). Complaint no. 2: On the WM keyboard, where are the common symbols, e.g. for "1/2" (one- half)? This complaint is ironic, because in point of fact Win Mobile's symbol insertion is SUPERB and MUCH BETTER than desktop Windows. On the desktop, if you're using Word, you have to launch Word's own character dialog, select your character, then exit. With something like Excel, it's absolutely pathetic. You must launch the Start Menu. You must hunt under Accessories, or Ladies' Apparel, or some damned thing, to launch Windows' main character map. You must SELECT a character. You must COPY the character. You must EXIT the dialog. You must RECLAIM focus over your app. You must INSERT the character, etc. But Win Mobile's keyboard has its superb accented-character shift that immediately gives you all the diacritics.     - The D-word Durability. Ah, the D-word. The word reviewers never get to. In 9 years, I've owned 6 Pocket PCs: one Compaq Aero 1550, one HP568, three HP1945's, and a Dell X51. I use them a lot, for all sorts of things, in a tougher-than-average environment. I suspect I'm the guy they worry about when they choose the warranty length. The 1945's durability sucked. The first one's screen broke, in normal use that the similarly sized 1550 had no problem with over the preceding years. Based on my experience & the volume of complaints I saw online, I still figure HTC, HP, or a vendor managed to overstrain the panels during manufacture or assembly. It was still under warranty, though I had to browbeat HP customer service. The replacement 1945 fricasseed itself one day. It was out of warranty by then. The third one lasted longer, and still works, but the digitizer is now too spiky for note taking. It would make a nice MP3 player, if I needed one. The 568 fried itself, too, just outside of warranty. HP tried to repair it, but no dice. The repair lasted a month or so. Forget about repairing PDA's unless you can do it yourself with duct tape. The Aero 1550 was the jewel. It did its job perfectly, with no extra features or bugs. If technology hadn't advanced so quickly, I'd still be using it. It lasted me through 3 years of hard service. After I upgraded to the 568, I gave the Aero to my nephew who fiddled with it for years afterward. My current X51 is going strong except for the ever-present HTC digitizer spiking that slows note taking. When it wears out, I'd buy another, but they don't make them anymore. Today, I'd have to pick between an Asus A626 and an HP210. Or maybe get a Nokia 810 and give up on Pocket PC. How bad can web-based functionality be? I'm tempted to just buy the dumbest possible phone with an organizer on it that can sync to a PC, an MP3 player, and a Sony Reader. I just have to find a phone with an organizer, but no camera. Lessons Learned About Durability 1) Screen protectors are good things. While a perfect individual can keep a screen and stylus perfectly clean & never scratch a screen, I can't. 2) HTC digitizers suck after a while. They begin to spike. Lekrn to edit carefully befere publishing. 3) Rhinoskin aluminum cases are good things, especially if you work in a factory. Or if you drop things occasionally. Watch out for loose hinge pins, though. Don't sit down with one in your pocket. 4) Cheesy plastic d-pads wear out. Not the contacts, the touch points. The resulting notchy d-pads hurt your fingers. 5) Scroll-wheels wear out as well, although they're nice to have while they last. In their case, it's the contacts, not the wheel. 6a) Did I mention HTC oigitizers suck? Well, OK. 6b) The HP1945's, even in a Rhinoskin case, were just a little too small and fragile to be practical. That's why I have no interest in the HP110. Clever little things, though. 7) If your PDA starts to feel hot, back it up immediately to a flash card, and don't put it back in your pocket.     - pda appointment yields meeting request with wrong date Hi, I create an apointment with attendees on a pda. Then during activesync, the meeting requests that are sent have a wrong date : instead of having the appointment's date, they have today's date with the hour being rounded to the closest half hour. However, in the calendar, the appointment has the correct time and date. I've seen afew testimonies of people witnessing the same behavior, but nothing close to a hint about where to find the beginning of a solution. I will add that this problem seems to happen randomly, i.e. it does happen "sometimes" with the same pda and computer, while with other devices it will always happen and with some other it will never happen... PocketPC or similar device? I've seen some comments saying that
devices simply don't have the juice to do this -- mostly people
recommend doing the translation off of the PDA. If it exists, though,
I'd like to try it on the pda -- I have seen PocketSphinx (http://
www.speech.cs.cmu.edu/pocketsphinx/).

Anyone know of any others?
Have any experience with this task?

Nick, I am looking for a Digital Voice Recorder with ability to convert to
written word. Most are not compatible with vista. I am trying to get a
device that I can record a lecture and then print a copy. If anyone knows
about this maybe it would help both.

I have no use for such a feature. But I hadn't thought before that you might
be able to repeat the text conversion and thus use the training on the
speaker's voice from the very beginning of the item...
