1. Haven't heard of any cross-compiler.
2. current, high-end KVM's, particularly Jbed, are VERY fast - a lot of
stuff (even games!) runs as quick as a native WM app - see my MIDlet game
reviews to see which (mostly 3D racing) games are worth trying out to see
what they're capable of.
