Hi

I sometimes use google groups to view usenet groups via PocketIE on my HTC
Tytn II, it works but is not brilliant. What is the best web or wap based
site for reading usenet groups in PocketIE?

imho, that's the best web interface... although there are a couple of
ppc newsreaders out there.

Assume you have experimented with the three pie display options?

Right got them, the "one column" option is the best view as you can actually
select newer or older in threads that are over 28 or so messages long, in
the default view I was using "fit to screen" you couldn't select this
option, this was the main gripe I had with using google groups, if you log
into your googlemail just prior to visiting google groups you are actually
logged in and can post to usenet.

Thanks for the pointer on "one column" and I'll have to try that myself
sometime.

BTW there is another way to log into Google Groups with your PPC than the
one you mentioned.

1. Try to "Sign in" as normal and when you find you can't sign in then
click on "Creat an account now"

2. On the page you go to it says "Your Google Acccount gives you access to
Google Groups and other Google services. If you already have a Google
Account, you can sign in here. Click on where it says "sign in here" and
then you can sign in from that page.

Once you sign in on the third page you are also signed in on
http://m.google.com

I have to use google groups becuase my mobile data is free but NNTP ports
aren't allowed, I guess those programs above use an NNTP port and are
tradional news clients.

Thanks I have bookmarked that page and am posting this message from my
Tytn II. This is a much better way of signing in.

I have the same problem with my mobile operator- they block port 119.

My solution is to use aioe.org as my newsserver on my mobile, because
they're free, and can run either on the standard NNTP port (119) or port 80,
which is probably open (for HTTP.) For a newsreader I use QMail- the second
to last reader on Bev's list.

Do you ever your "Phone as Modem" and if you do, do they still block port
119?

BTW, I saw this about Sprint yesterday:
http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/05/19/sprint-falls-in-line-caps-unlimited-data-at-5gb/

I know 5gb is a lot but I wish I knew if they would give us a way to check
our usage.

Not quite my mobile data is through a proxy server 212.9.19.199. I just
tethered my Tytn II to my PC and then set the proxy server in IE I was able
to browse websites, but in Windows Mail there is no option for proxy server
so it has no way to resolve nntp.aioe.org and even if it could I dunno if
NNTP requests would work even if they were on port 80.

T-Mo USA, my operator, also uses a proxy for HTTP, but leaves POP, SMTP, and
IMAP ports open for e-mail access. (At least on the dirt cheap $6 US/month
unlimited internet access plan I use- their higher cost plans are
unrestricted.)

I did speak too soon, however- upon reflection, I remembered QMail didn't
work through the proxy either- I have it set up to connect over GSM data
(CSD) through a free dialup ISP (that blocks 119 and SMTP port 25 to prevent
spam.) 9.6k GSM data isn't that bad for low bandwidth applications like
Usenet text groups- I set it up so long ago I'd forgotten! Sorry!

Google Groups is probably the way to go for you, unless anyone knows a good
WAP portal for Usenet.

I use Googlemail's Java app for email which works over the proxy connection
I have and is a seperate email client in itself, no need to use crappy WAP
based mail. Therefore I don't need the POP, SMTP or IMAP ports open and my
connection is £0 per month as I`m on payG and only top up once a year,
mainly use my Tytn II use recieving calls, email and looking at google
groups.

Thanks for the info. I just found out I'm at 1.8 gig already and I didn't
think I used my Slingbox that much this month.
