    - How to "properly" modify a Core OS source code file in PB? I'm using VS2005 SP1 with PB 6.0 SP1. I needed to modify kitl_x86.c, which is physically located in this folder on my workstation: C:\WINCE600\PLATFORM\COMMON\src\x86\COMMON\kitl\kitl_x86.c I tried to edit the file from within Platform Builder...I see the file in the Solution Explorer tree, under: Solution>OSDesign>C:/WINCE600>PLATFORM>COMMON>src>x86>COMMON>kitl>base>Sourc e files The file name is displayed as "../kitl_x86.c". I can edit the file in the IDE, but I can't save it. As usual, I searched the online Microsoft documentation for PB for 90 minutes, got a huge headache, lost my patience, and then just used Notepad to edit and save the file directly. (It worked like a charm!) Presumably this is the wrong way to edit the file. What's the preferred way? Do I need to somehow clone/copy this file to a "Private" folder in PB, where I can make my tweaks, so that PB will know of my changes and then build my tweaked copy into my OS image?     - wzcsapi.h in visual studio 2005 Hi all, I am trying to include wzcsapi.h in a VS 2005 project. All I need to do is make the WZCSetInterface and QueryInterface calls and use the INTF_ENTRY struct defined in that header file. Unfortunately when I try to compile the project I am getting errors such as: C:\WINCE600\PUBLIC\COMMON\OAK\INC\wzcsapi.h(117) : error C2146: syntax error : missing ';' before identifier 'pEapExtensionInfo' I presume I am doing something wrong with the environment. There are a few structures used in the wzcsapi.h that the compiler seems to be unable to resolve a declaration for. i.e. EAP_EXTENSION_INFO. Any ideas? Thanks.     - KITL only working in Polling Mode (CE 6.0 on an x86 CEPC) Sorry, this post is long. I've successfully built a Windows CE 6.0 OS for my x86 "CEPC", and can download it to my target successfully over ethernet. I can run my simple "Hello World" applications on the target with no problem. However, I have been able get the KITL debugger to work in "Polling Mode" only. (To do that, I modified the kitl_x86.c file to add the OAL_KITL_FLAGS_POLL to the pKitlArgs->flags setting in the InitKitlEtherArgs() function.) If I try to use the default "Interrupt Mode" (that is, without setting the _POLL flag), then my OS image will hang during the booting stage, with a repeating sequence (every 8 seconds) of 16 ethernet UDP packets being sent from the target to the host, which never seem to get acknowledged by PB. Each UDP packet's data payload starts with "EDBG". I had read in other postings that it could be an MTU size issue on my development workstation; I haven't investigated this issue yet. But it's interesting that if I switch to Polling Mode, everything starts up fine and I can execute my applications on my CE target. Has anyone seen this problem and then been able to get KITL working in Interrupt Mode? I can live with Polling Mode for now (in fact, I don't even know if Interrupt Mode will improve the performance of my system, since I've never seen it work before), but I wondered if anyone has found a fix for this problem.     - VS2005 with CE 5.0 SDK I've searched and search and haven't been able to come up with a definitive answer. Does anyone know why a Platform Builder CE 5.0 generated SDK does not show up in VS2005 as a possible device when creating a Smartdevice application? I have a custom CE 5.0 ARM device that I would like to create an SDK and give to an application developer. He would like to use VS2005. Is this possible? Do I need to do anything to my 5.0 OS?     - My Subproject apps aren't being copied to the Release directory when OS is built After one full week of work, I have successfully built a Win CE 6.0 OS for my x86 "CEPC". (I'm using an old PC motherboard as my "target" device). I'm able to download the new OS image to my target via ethernet, and Windows Explorer comes up fine with the display, keyboard and mouse working well. (A beer bash celebration is being held this afternoon. :-D ) Now I have a minor issue that is more of an annoyance: I'm using VS2005 SP1 with PB SP1. I wrote two simple Subproject applications in my OS Design Project; one is named "ConsoleApp1" and the other "WinApp1". They both build fine separately (by right-clicking on each subproject and selecting "Rebuild" from the pop-up menu). But when I do a "Rebuild Solution" to build the entire OS and my subprojects, they're not being included in my Release directory, even though the "Project>Properties>Subproject Image Settings" are set to include those subprojects in the Build and the Image. During the makeimage phase, I get a fatal error that says it cannot find "ConsoleApp1.EXE" file in the Release directory, and it halts the build. Seems like the makeimage phase deletes the ConsoleApp1.EXE and WinApp1.EXE files from the Release directory, and then it complains that it can't find them. As a workaround to this problem, I set the "Build" setting in "Project>Properties>Subproject Image Settings" to "Excluded", leave the "Image" setting at "Included", and then manually copy the EXE files to the Release Folder. Now when I do a Rebuild Solution, it includes the EXEs in with the OS image, and I can execute them just fine on the target.     - CMD can not start. Low on memory or too many console windows open. Looks like a well known problem, still... I have a Serial Port driver for my custom platform. When i redirect the console output to the COM1 serial port it throws an error saying: "CMD can not start. Low on memory or too many console windows open. Please close some console applications and try again." None of the applications that I have written uses/opens COM1. The only place where I try to use COM1 is by specifying the registry : [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\Console] "OutputTo"=dword:1 "COMSpeed"=dword:115200 My OS design includes the comand processor and Console window. Including/exclusing the console window doesnt make any difference. I have all the WinCE updates installed and had a clean build sysgen for my platform. Still it thows the same error message. I have OEMRead/write DebugByte implemented in the OAL which use the same UART port but i reset everything in my HWInit for COM driver. So my idea is to put all the HW register operation in one function(in driver), and use CriticalSection to protect.     - Installing Device Driver in Kernel Mode Hello, I am porting an device driver from CE 4.20 to 6.0 and need to install the driver as a Kernel mode instead of User Mode. I have been wrestling with this for a few days now and can not find any information on how to do this. I need this device driver running in kernel mode because about every 100 mSecs we make around 25 - 30 DeviceIOControl calls into the driver to read some data of a PCI bus. With the driver running in User Mode the system runs for a while and then just reboots. I seem periodic failures error codes of 0x80070057 (The parameter is incorrect.), I am guessing that the driver while running in UserMode can not handle this amount of traffic from what I have read. I have tried changing the "Flags" registry entry for the driver to have the without success. Any help that can be given would be great.     - RAS Difference between CE 5.0 and XP Hello, I am trying to solve a problem that I am having using RAS for CE 5.0. I am using a dial up satellite modem and it is VERY slow. I can connect to a remote network (dial up) using XP. At this point I can do anything (albeit taking a horrible amount of time). On my CE device, I can get the RAS dial up to connect. Then Nothing! I am attempting to do an "InternetConnect" call in order to FTP some information. This call always returns a 12002 (timeout). I have set up all the available timeouts (using InternetSetOption) to 5 minutes. I don't think the problem is in my InternetConnect function itself as I can connect using a GSM modem without any problems. The difference between the two is primarily speed. What might the settings be in XP that makes it work? Might there be a comparable setting in CE? Please let me know if you have any insight on this extremely frustrating problem.     - GetDescriptor does not return with USB 2.0 devices Hello, I'm trying to make USB 2.0 devices work on a CEPC with EHCI/OHCI Host controllers. I've installed all the USB related QFEs. If I insert a USB 1.1 flash key, EHCI passes control to OHCI and all works fine. In case of a 2.0 device, I can see debug strings up to: CHub(Root tier 0)::AttachDevice - status = DEVICE_CONFIG_STATUS_SCHEDULING_GET_DEVICE_DESCRIPTOR_TEST, failures = 0 +CHub(Root tier 0)::GetDescriptor - address = 0, Type = 1, Index = 0, Size = 8 GetDescriptor does not return at all, due to a busy pipe.     - Hardware Access from Application We have a custom platform with a lot of special-purpose hardware on it. Under CE 6.0, all of the hardware access must be done by a device driver. I wrote one to wrap our hardware, but it sure would be better for us if our application could access the hardware directly. Is there a way to do this in WinCE 6.0? Could I write a device driver that would map the physical addresses to a calling process's virtual address space? (if so, what API would do that for me?)     - mount/format nand flash FATFS-partition problems Hi, I'm trying to create and mount a FATFS partition from NAND flash (CE 6), as an "external drive" so to speak. In control panel -> storage manager I see a DSK1 partition. When adding files to the mounted folder the files are actually put in flash (Checked from outside of OS). However when rebooting the system, this partition is never detected so at every reboot the entire flash is reformated and a new DSK1 partition is created. If registry settings autoformat and autopartition is '0' it simply does not mount anything.     - Adding a Certificate to NK.bin? We have a device that will be deployed on shop floor networks. It is essentially guaranteed that the device will not have access to the Internet. I have a requirement that I verify executables on a thumb drive originated with our company prior to running them (for maintenance and/or upgrades). I thought I would sign the executables (we do that already) and verify the signature. Since the device cannot go the the certificate authority (Verisign in our case) and get our certificate, the certificate needs to be installed.     - NAND Flash In NAND flash document I could not find any terms referring to Sector. I found blocks and pages in NAND flash. But In WindowCE FMD always reference to sector address. 1. For example Sector Address =0x00000140 means which block and which page in the block it is refering to. My nand flash is only 64MB of 512Mbits x8 device. window CE NBoot debug message shows total sector 56916. But the nand flash documentation tells total 4096 blocks ,each blocks 32 page, each page is 512 bytes. I could not corelate the sector with nand flash block and pages size.     - Power Manager Hello all, We have registry entry for informing the Power Manager when there is any user input may be keyboard, mouse etc. Similar to that, is there any registry info which informs power manager that, the system is active but the user is idle? I am trying to implement the feature user idle, system active. I implemented the system activity timer. but, still its not working. for example, if the system plays media player, the system should reset the timer before it expires.     - .NET 2.0 not selectable in catalog Hello again, The story starts like this. We need to integrate a product that uses the .NET CF (compact framework) 2.0 SP1 into our CE 5.0 image. So, I installed the 20061231 QFE rollup from Microsoft. The install seemed to complete just fine. Then I re-opened platform builder 5, removed .NET version 1 from my workspace, and went to select .NET version 2. I then discovered that I could not select either "Add to OS design" or "View Dependencies," the options were greyed out. I was able to add .NET version 2 via manually selecting the environment variable, then building. My questions are: why is GUI option still greyed out, and how do I correct that? When a project is compiled with Settings > C++ > Generate Browse Information = Yes, the compiler produces sbr files in a bizarre location under Documents and Settings.     - trouble with deploying at C# hi? My environment is PB5.0 for os building and visual studio 2005 team edition for c# app developing. Of course, I added dotnet cf catalog to the os design. The problem is all files in C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\\SmartDevices\\SDK\\CompactFramework\\2.0\\v2.0\\WindowsCE\\wce500\\x86 are deployed at every time when the app is run. So the total consumed time for executing the app is so much, over 3 minutes. This phenomenon isn't happened from the first os. On updating my os design, this problem is happened. We use only NAND flash (no other flash onboard) based bootloader for Windows CE 5.0. We have a Linux 2.6 BSP too. When we ship the board to customer, we must burn Linux/WinCE bootloaders on board so that the customer can see the demo. Any ideas how to put Linux/WinCE bootloaders on NAND flash simultaneously ?.     - Converting PCM Wav files to GSM6.1 format I am writing a program to convert PCM Wav files to other formats like mula, GSM6.1, ADPCM etc. When I call acmFormatSuggest for the format tag WAVE_FORMAT_GSM610 I get an Not Possible error(512). This codec is installed on my system and I am able to use another program to convert my WAV file to GSM6.10 format.     - Removing .db file entry for PUBLIC item Hi, I'm looking for any creative solutions that you might have found to the following problem: I have ActiveSync in my build, but do not want it to start automatically every time there is an RS232 connect event (this is annoying and does not fit the usage model of our device; manual start is fine, when ActiveSync is to be used). This is all well and good, but when you include ActiveSync in the configuration, you *always* get datasync.db included in your image and that *always* puts the database entries to start ActiveSync in the notification database. The help page for ActiveSync says, "If you do not need AutoNotify, remove this entry.", but that was obviously written by someone who has never used PB in the real world. I shouldn't modify PUBLIC, as I don't want to prevent *every* device that I might build from having this feature, just the ones that I choose. Unlike registry files, there does not appear to be a way to indicate that a given entry should be removed from the database via some .db file that I create (or via entries added to project.db or something easy and sensible). So, I could somehow forcably copy my own datasync.db over the top of the one from ActiveSync found in the flat release directory, or I could edit the PUBLIC code to remove the AutoNotify entry and assume that I'll remember to put it in my own .db file on any device that *should* have it. Now I want to insert this value to platform.reg. I tried to write under [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\TOUCH] "CalibrationData"=dword:310035 But this doesn't seem to work.     - Swap ANSI Code Pages Hi! What has to be done to swap the ANSI code page on Windows CE? All available languages have been implemented into the compiled WinCE kernel. They appear in Regional Settings / Your locale. It is possible to swap the locale but it has no effect on the ANSI code page. Registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\International\ACP is set to 1252 and has to be swapped to 1250. But setting it, flushing and cold booting has no effect. The value is set to 1250 but the active code page remains 1252. So the registry setting seems to be for informational use only. - Is it possible to swap the ANSI code page by an API call? - Is it possible to swap it by altering the registry and reboot? - Is it possible to swap it in platform builder? I am working on WIndows Embedded CE6 SP1 and recently tried to add one
new driver node in the BSP .pbcxml file.

The target BSP is one vendor provided (not included in CE6). When I
opend .pbcxml in using Catalog editor, it shows nothing besides
"Catalog [current file]" node, while the "Source" tab includes various
node definition codes.

Then, when I changed File Version property of "Catalog [current
file]" node, the Catalog editor view shows various driver node under
"Orphaned Nodes" folder icon node.

So - what is "Orphaned Nodes"? How one can resolve / add driver node
in this BSP catalog file?
