Is anybody doing this, or are there other non PocketPC builds on a
commercial, hand held, PDA style device?

There are some non-Pocket PC devices in that basic form-factor out there,
yes. I seem to remember one or more being mentioned here before.
Intrinsyc, as I recall, has a reference platform in the basic Pocket PC
layout.

You don't have enough information to build a different OS configuration for
a commercial device, no.

The main reason behind my quest is that we have a CE 4 device that we build
that communicates over DCOM. We wanted to use the same interface on a hand
held to perform similar services. It looks like I will have to implement
some type of translation server with sockets.

It just shouldn't be that hard to add DCOM to an existing system. I remember
getting DCOM to work with CE 3 wasn't too bad. It's been a while, but I
think I just added a file or two and changed some registry entries. Granted,
this was in my build and I don't know what it would take to do after the OS
is already loaded...

The process remains the same, and is quite simple. Just add the item from
the catalog. However this only works if you have a BSP for the hardware
device to actually build an OS image for the device Retail device vendors do
not, as a rule, make enough information available about their devices
internals for you to create a BSP for them. So, you have to go with a custom
solution. One option is to use web services to wrap access to your COM
components.
