Hi Folks,

-- WinCE 4.2 .net --
I have come across an exception while playing streaming video by =
ceplayer.exe application,
when the audio driver[audio.dll] is NOT loaded.
[reasons for not loading may be due to absence of audio codec hardware =
or likewise].

The exception is as follows:

First-chance exception in DXMASF.DLL
(0xc0000005: Access violation)

in file : WINCEROOT\private\directx\wmt40\filters\nssplut.cpp

Exception 002 Thread=3D87e79668 Proc=3D47db1e92
AKY=3D00000041 PC=3D01e12718 RA=3D01e12704 BVA=3D00000000
Process 'ceplayer.exe'

This exception is observed when the =
'WinCEPB42-040331-2004Q1-MIPSII_FP.EXE' QFE packet
is installed and the platform is 'rebuild all'.

Prior to 2004Q1 QFE installation this exception is NOT observed.

If I restore the old dxmasf.lib & dxmasf.pdb files in =
WINCEROOT\PUBLIC\DIRECTX\OAK\LIB\MIPSII_FP
and 'rebuild all' the platform, everything works fine again.

Now, I would like to know, what is the difference between the updated =
dxmasf.lib=20
compared to that of old one ?

The document 'WinCE .NET 4.2_Update_Readme_2004Q1.htm' does not detail =
the new expected behavior for the same.

Can anyone get me the link where I can find technical information =
[changed behavior of the binaries] for QFE update.

regards
Sajid

Hi Avram,

First, thankx for the reply.

There is nothing special i do with my configurations for the headed =
systems.
I have observed this exception in various configurations like: STB, IA, =
DMR... so on,
with ceplayer-ware.

Our BSP works fine with streaming video when the QFEs are not installed.
We do not have any problem with the 'WinCEPB42-040101-QFE_ALL-MIPSII_FP' =
QFE.
But the later one does create the exception.

Following are the steps I followed for debugging the exception:
1 - I freshly installed registered WinCE 4.2 [MIPSII_FP alone]without =
any QFE on a new system.
2 - Installed our BSP for MIPS platform
3 - Created a platform on Internet Appliance configuration
4 - Enabled multimedia drivers and others
5 - Built it and ran it on the target with all the hardware in place.
6 - Started streaming video from a streaming video server using ceplayer =
[both http & mms protocols used]- everything works fine
7 - Then, I removed the audio codec from the target and ran the same =
image - still everything works fine [ofcourse without audio]
8 - Later I installed 'QFE WinCEPB42-040101-QFE_ALL-MIPSII_FP' packet =
and restarted the host system [just to make sure]
9 - Cleaned the platform and 'rebuilt all' the same platform without any =
changes
10 - followed steps 6 & 7 - still no problem
11 - Next, I installed 'WinCEPB42-040331-2004Q1-MIPSII_FP' packet and =
restarted the host system [just to make sure]
12 - Cleaned the platform and 'rebuilt all' the same platform without =
any changes
13 - Started streaming video from a streaming video server using =
ceplayer [both http & mms protocols used]- everything works fine
14 - Then, I removed the audio codec from the target and ran the same =
image - surprise!! got an exception as mentioned earlier.

So, to produce this exception at your end.
You may try out the above steps!

Hope, you get me the required information.
Thanking you.

regards
sajid.

Hello Sajid,

I was wondering if there's a reason you're installing the 2004 instead =
of our more recent 2005 update? The dxmasf.lib file has had a couple =
more updates since Q1 of 2004. Can you please try to install the full =
2005 update followed by the Q1 of 2005 update and tell me if that takes =
care of your issue?

The full 2005 update can be found here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=3Dd8e5e43f-8f2f-=
45f5-aad4-985a8bbafb17&DisplayLang=3Den

And the Q1 of 2005 update can be found here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=3Dfbe4efe4-dc43-=
460c-a5ae-ca87f8aac237&DisplayLang=3Den

Please let me know if you still run into this problem and we will be =
glad to investigate further.

Thanks again,
Avram

Hi Avram,

First, thankx for the reply.

There is nothing special i do with my configurations for the headed =
systems.
I have observed this exception in various configurations like: STB, =
IA, DMR... so on,
with ceplayer-ware.

Our BSP works fine with streaming video when the QFEs are not =
installed.
We do not have any problem with the =
'WinCEPB42-040101-QFE_ALL-MIPSII_FP' QFE.

6 - Started streaming video from a streaming video server using =
ceplayer [both http & mms protocols used]- everything works fine
7 - Then, I removed the audio codec from the target and ran the same =
image - still everything works fine [ofcourse without audio]
8 - Later I installed 'QFE WinCEPB42-040101-QFE_ALL-MIPSII_FP' packet =
and restarted the host system [just to make sure]
9 - Cleaned the platform and 'rebuilt all' the same platform without =
any changes

I am from the Windows CE QFE team at Microsoft and I would love to =
help you=20
further with your issue. The first step is to try to reproduce this =
problem on my end here. Can you please provide me with some details =
about the configuration that you are building as well as any special =
steps that you have to do in order to run into this problem.

By the way, by listing the suspect QFE, you have saved me TONS of =
time!=20
Thanks for that!

I hope we can get this resolved for you in a hurry.

Hi Folks,

-- WinCE 4.2 .net --
I have come across an exception while playing streaming video by =
ceplayer.exe application,
when the audio driver[audio.dll] is NOT loaded.
[reasons for not loading may be due to absence of audio codec =
hardware or likewise].

The exception is as follows:

First-chance exception in DXMASF.DLL
(0xc0000005: Access violation)

in file : WINCEROOT\private\directx\wmt40\filters\nssplut.cpp

Exception 002 Thread=3D87e79668 Proc=3D47db1e92
AKY=3D00000041 PC=3D01e12718 RA=3D01e12704 BVA=3D00000000
Process 'ceplayer.exe'

This exception is observed when the =
'WinCEPB42-040331-2004Q1-MIPSII_FP.EXE' QFE packet
is installed and the platform is 'rebuild all'.

Prior to 2004Q1 QFE installation this exception is NOT observed.

If I restore the old dxmasf.lib & dxmasf.pdb files in =
WINCEROOT\PUBLIC\DIRECTX\OAK\LIB\MIPSII_FP
and 'rebuild all' the platform, everything works fine again.

Now, I would like to know, what is the difference between the =
updated dxmasf.lib=20
compared to that of old one ?

The document 'WinCE .NET 4.2_Update_Readme_2004Q1.htm' does not =
detail the new expected behavior for the same.

Can anyone get me the link where I can find technical information =
[changed behavior of the binaries] for QFE update.

regards
Sajid
