Hello,

When I open an e-mail for reading, Outlook 2003 marks it as read by default.
Is there any way to control it ? I would like to leave the mail as unread
even if I open it. I want to mark it as read only after I read and process
it.

Regards,
GK

by 'open', are you talking about the Preview Pane/Reading Pane? If you are,
check Tools - Options and look at the Preview pane options. You can tell
it not to mark the item as read. If you are actualy opening the email, I'm
not sure off the top of my head if you can keep that from marking your mail
as read since you are actually opening the message. I'll need to dig out
a 2003 client to check.

I am actually opening the e-mail (not reding/preview pane).

if you open the message, it's read. after you close it, you can right click
and mark it unread if you want... or use the preview pane and disable the
mark as read options.

Background:
I am not confortable with preview/reading pane and want to open the message
and read it. However I want to keep it "unread" till I "process" it i.e.,
take action if any. I don't want to right-click and mark it as unread every
time. I want to mark as "read" only after I process it.

Since the number of incoming mails is too much and not all can be processed
immediately, it will be really helpful to have this feature.

The Reading Pane is safer that opening the message.

Opening it and reading it are synonymous to Outlook. Opening a message will
mark it read. You cannot change that. If you wish to make a suggestion to
Microsoft to have this behavior modified, go ahead.
