I use outlook 2003, (not outlook express) and have a pop 3 email account set
up to download my email from Verizon. I use Windows XP Pro. The problem I
have is this, when I first boot up my computer and go to my profile, run
outlook 2003, my email downloads with no problem. I log off my profile and
log back in at another time, run outlook 2003, and then I receive an error
message saying the pop 3 email server can not be found. If I shut down the
computer and restart and boot up again, I can download my email from Verizon.
This happens the same way all the time, every time. Thanks for any help!

The next time you close Outlook, start Task Manager and see if there is
still an OUTLOOK.EXE process running.

Hello Brian and VTRESCA75

I have been living with exactly the same issue for some months now. Couldn't
resolve it and worked around the problem by either using fast user switching
or re-booting my machine. The former enabled me to access outlook in other
users accounts or my own outlook when switching back to my profile.

Checked task manager as you suggested, Brian and the outlook.exe process
disappears when the program is closed.

Would appreciate further help.

Thanks to you both

Ron

What is the EXACT text of the error you receive?

Task 'Havelock UK - Receiving' reported error (0x80042108) : 'Outlook is
unable to connect to your incoming (POP3) e-mail server. If you continue to
receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service
provider (ISP).'

This is the error message I get for each of my POP3 accounts after I log
back into my user profile.

Does your PC sleep or hibernate between log ins?

The computer does go into standby but only after an hour. Sometimes I log in
well before this and still get an error and cannot download my pop3 email

Hi Both

Confirm that my PC doesn't go into standby mode in between logins.

I can't think of anything offhand that would be causing this. Have you
tried a new mail profile?

Hi

I created a new profile and replicated the scenario. Same error message as
before - able to send but not receive POP3 messages.

Coincidentally, there was an upgrade to my Norton Protection Centre this
evening which caused a delay in the programme loading up when logging on to
my user account. I was then able to start up Outlook no problem before the
'green tick' showed in the Norton Protection Center icon!!

Logged off, then logged back on again and started Outlook before the green
tick appeared. No send/receive error message!!

Seems to be either a Norton Firewall or Norton Antivirus issue. I know that
this is covered in one of the Microsoft KB articles, but I am loathe to mess
around with Norton as it seems to become embroiled in the system and I had a
bad experience in the past with uninstall/re-installing the programme.

I wonder if VTRESCA75 has Norton as well?

As it is a 3rd party programme, I would expect that you can't really help,
Brian. Would be interested to read your comments though.

Regards

Ron

Never scan incoming (and especially outgoing) mail with an antivirus
scanner. It's unnecessary and can cause communication issues. Moreover,
Symantec's products screw up Outlook more than any other "security" apps.

Thnaks, Brian

Most of the (few) issues I have had with Office and Outlook have been traced
back to Norton eg Word doc scanning, Outlook plugin etc which, when you try
to disable, either doesn't or nags you with a warning icon until you enable
it again.

No matter...

As far as this issue is concerned, either the Symantec software upgrade last
night fixed my own problem or I struck lucky.

Thanks for looking at this, Brian, and thanks also to VTRESCA75 for posting
- it was sheer chance that I caught this whilst clearing out my 'favourites'.

Regards to you both - I hope that VTRESCA75 strikes lucky!
