    - Removing installed (unused) programs I like to keep my system updated. However I am not sure if I should remove old/outdated system programs. For example, in the Add/Remove Programs window I have NET. Framework 1.1 (with all updates), NET. Framework 2.0 service pack one (with all updates), and NET. Framework 3.0 which I assume is the most up-to-date and therefore is the installed and currently used NET. Framwork. Do I really need to keep the other NET. Framework programs (1.1 and 2.0)?     - LAN, wireless internet pravicy and security I connect to the internet through my (LAN) wireless connection on a public network. My files can be viewed by others on my network if I disable my security set-up. My question is if I am online using my first user profile are the files on my second user profile safe from viewing by someone on my network ? I other words, if I only keep My Document files on my second user log-in profile are they safe from view while I am online using my first user log-in profile? I think using a different user profile when going online by wireless connection would automatically disable any access to files stored in a different user profile. Is is ture?     - MS Office 2007 Trial - HELP!! I downloaded the trial version today & have been having problems right from the start: 1. When I opened Word or Powerpoint, the Activation Wizard says that the trial is expired (which I can't understand as I only downloaded & activated a few hours ago) & that I should convert to the full product. 2. When I try 'Word Options' and click 'Activate', it gives me the same message. 3. If I click 'Cancel', I can't key in anything cos it says "The selection is locked". I read the link that Carey gave as her reply about locked content but I can't seem to find the 'Properties' Button - so i still have a problem with locked content (even when there is no content). I don't understand where I went wrong. I followed all the on-screen instructions step-by-step & I had already keyed in the product key given when I was prompted to do so. I even tried calling the Microsoft Technical Support, which referred me to Activation Centre, which referred me back to Technical Support. As this is a new PC, I don't have an older version of MS Office to fall back on & I'm at my wit's end cos I have an assignment due very soon & i need the powerpoint as I don't have the time to do it during office hrs. :-( If anybody has any idea what to do, I'd appreciate any suggestions.     - Office 2007 "Help" causes errors I'm running Windows XP Home with SP2 and now SP3. Having received Office Enterprise 2007, I uninstalled Office XP, then installed 2007 without problems. All programs seem to open and work correctly, except that the "Help" function generates errors. For example: I open Word, click on the Office Button, click on Word Options, and then click on the "?" at the top right. The "Word Help" window starts to open, and, presumably, to load (i.e., the hourglass turns); then, before anything appears in the window, a "Microsoft Office Help Viewer" box opens, saying that "Microsoft Office Help Viewer encountered a problem and needs to close.... etc...." Basically, the same thing happens when I use F1 in any of the apps, as well. Thinking that it might be a TSR or something else in the background, I tried using a "clean boot" (as shown, for example, at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353); the same problem occurs, regardless. Through "Add/Remove Programs", I also tried running "Repair Office". It finished successfully... but the problem remains. I'd be grateful for any solutions or suggestions.     - Unable to get rid of Microsoft Office 2007 MUI Files I am unable to get rid of the Microsoft 2007 MUI Files after I finished uninstalling Microsoft Office Small Business 2007 trail. These files keep showing up on 'Add or Remove Programs'. Because of that, I am unable to install any new Microsoft 2007 applications.     - Strange problem with Arial font Hello, I'm having an odd problem with my fonts in Outlook and Word. When I use Arial it will only appear in Bold. I haven't selected bold and I can't get rid of it. When I checked Format/Font from the menu options I noticed that the dialogue box doesn't have an option for "Regular" under the "Font Style". It seems to be the only font that doesn't have this option. I checked in the WINDOWS/Fonts folder to see if there was a font in there called Arial, and there is, it's called "arial.ttf". Now for MS charity licenses is the price flat out 1 consistant price? or is it avaiable to vendors to (bend) the rules?     - MERGE FILES QUESTIONS There are two questions here: (1) I click Save As > another file with a different name. Office comes up with a box that asks if I want to replace file, overwrite file with changes, merge files. I click "merge." Just *what* is this doing? The Help button is useless for information about merging document files. (2) After clicking "merge," four windows pop up: On the left, a long, thin window showing (I guess) the changes made in the merge; a big window in the middle showing the combined document; on the right, two boxlike windows showing the two original files. I closed the window on the left. But, . . . how do I get it back? I tried going back to Square One (open document > Save As > choose another file > select third option: merge). Nothing happened. The window did not come back. In fact, nothing happened like it did the first time. All it did was open up the other selected document, presumably, with the changes already merged.     - Problem installing language packs (Office 20027) Last year I installed Dutch and French language packs to complement the English Office 2007 applications. After a disk crash a few days ago and ensuing full reinstall of the OS and MS Office 2007, it turned out impossible to install the language packs again, from either the downloaded files that I had saved on another hard disk or from copies burned onto a CD. For both LPs there was a message that "Errors [were] encountered...]. Details in the window showing the extraction progress said that when extracting the X12-34010.exe files (Dutch LP) "cannot open X12-34010.exe" and on the following line, when extracting paul.dll "cannot open paul.dll". Exactly the same error messages appeared when installing the French LP. While I had no problem getting new download links from Microsoft and the installation of the newly downloaded LPs went absolutely smoothly, the problem that occurred with the original ones leave me puzzled, also because the two language packs had initially been downloaded some two months apart.     - Help with MS Fax I use MS Word and MS Fax to occasionally sent faxes. I was able to do this just a couple of months ago but now I can't. I checked in Printers and Faxes and it shows my fax status as Ready. I checked the Fax Concole and in the Outbox there are the three faxes I tried to send just sitting there. For some reason the faxes aren't being sent. I've tried sending from word using the File > Print and choosing Fax. I have also tried the File>Send To>Fax recipient menthod. Neither seem to work.     - Copy/Cut freezing in Microsoft Word Recently, whenever I try to cut/copy something within Microsoft Word, it freezes for about 20 seconds. Pasting does not take any time at all. I had to copy and paste a lot between documents recently and somewhere along the way, this problem started occurring. In trying to isolate the problem, I figured out that cut/copy works fine if I login as a different user. However, I tried moving/deleting different folders within my user profile in the Appdata folder (Word, Office, Templates) but nothing seemed to work.     - Opening Word 2003 Brings Up MS Installer first ... When I click on my Word 2003 icon, or the program itself, Windows Installer 3.1 starts to Install..."     - How do I supress the reboot prompt while giving some UI during Ins I'd like to have users see that Office 2007 is being installed on their PC's and the progress bar, but I don't want the Office 2007 package to prompt for a reboot at the end. The reason for this is that I'm deploying via SCCM 2007 and want it to take care of the reboot so that I can deploy in the middle of the night and not have to worry about everyone having to reboot first thing in the morning. The way it is now, even though I tell SCCM to perform a reboot, it doesn't see the install as being complete as long as the Office reboot prompt is on the window--therefore never starts the countdown. If I manually click "no" to the Office prompt for reboot the SCCM prompt appears and works just fine. If I don't press anything, the SCCM prompt never appears. Alternatively, if I click "Yes" to the Office prompt for a reboot, the reboot happens but the SCCM report is scewed because it then reports a failure due to an "unexpected reboot".     - Office 2003 is not connecting My email and Office 2003 programs were working fine up until a few weeks ago. It started by my Outlook program continually freezing up. I tried running Office update, got all of those and it still was not working. I uninstalled all the updates I could (would not let me uninstall Service Pack 3 and another one can't remember which) and it still was not working. So I uninstalled the whole suite and reinstalled it. Twice! And it's still not working properly. Here is the message I get in Outlook: "Task 'mail.pelicanrealestate.com - Receiving' reported error (0x80042108) : 'Outlook is unable to connect to your incoming (POP3) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'" My ISP is apparently working fine as I can still check my email through the web-mail and my administrator has said there are no problems. Here's the other part. When I try to go into Word or Publisher and search for "Help" or ClipArt, it won't bring anything up! I've tried looking through microsoftoffice.com and none of the solutions I have found have worked. I do not have a firewall active nor am I actively running an Anti-Virus program. I stopped running those in hopes that would cure it, but apparently not. I also ran an anti-spyware cleanup, disk clean-up, and defragmented. Nothing is working! I do not want to get to the point where I have to reinstall the whole computer as there is a lot of work related items on here that I cannot afford to loose and will take a long time to transfer to another machine.     - bulk replacing email addresses in Word docs. I am looking for a way of doing a bulk search/replace of email addresses in our store of Word documents. Currently they have @mydomain.co.uk addresses and I want to search & replace with @mydomain.com I did a bit of experiment with UltraEdit32 on some sample docs and altough it finds and replaces all occurances of the string the docs then cannot be opened by Word. I suspect that there is some arithmetic checksum embedded in the docs and Word wasn't happy as this wouldn't resolve correctly. I could get the users to do it one-by-one but there are many hundreds of templates and standard letters/documents that get emailed/posted out to clients. In some cases the email addresses are in the body of the docs and some have them in text-boxes as part of header/footers. To go through each individual document will take weeks so I am trying to find a better way of doing it. I am aiming to keep the replacing string the same physical length as the original by adding a space at the end. If anyone has any suggestions I'd be greatly obliged.     - Word retains printer settings Hi, I have multiple users who have a problem with Microsoft Word printing. If they make any settings like change the tray from the default setting, the next time they go into word and print, these settings are retained and not back to default. This means half the time they think they are printing to the default plain paper, but actually printed to the letterheaded paper because they forgot they printed letterheaded earlier in the day.
