Office 2003 is not connecting
My email and Office 2003 programs were working fine up until a few weeks ago.
It started by my Outlook program continually freezing up. I tried running
Office update, got all of those and it still was not working. I uninstalled
all the updates I could (would not let me uninstall Service Pack 3 and
another one can't remember which) and it still was not working. So I
uninstalled the whole suite and reinstalled it. Twice! And it's still not
working properly. Here is the message I get in Outlook:
"Task 'mail.pelicanrealestate.com - Receiving' reported error (0x80042108) :
'Outlook is unable to connect to your incoming (POP3) e-mail server. If you
continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or
Internet service provider (ISP).'"
My ISP is apparently working fine as I can still check my email through the
web-mail and my administrator has said there are no problems.
Here's the other part. When I try to go into Word or Publisher and search
for "Help" or ClipArt, it won't bring anything up! I've tried looking
through microsoftoffice.com and none of the solutions I have found have
worked.
I do not have a firewall active nor am I actively running an Anti-Virus
program. I stopped running those in hopes that would cure it, but apparently
not. I also ran an anti-spyware cleanup, disk clean-up, and defragmented.
Nothing is working! I do not want to get to the point where I have to
reinstall the whole computer as there is a lot of work related items on here
that I cannot afford to loose and will take a long time to transfer to
another machine. Help me please!
Thanks! Tag: can't install office 2003, won't accept product key Tag: 293321

bulk replacing email addresses in Word docs.
I am looking for a way of doing a bulk search/replace of email addresses in
our store of Word documents. Currently they have @mydomain.co.uk addresses
and I want to search & replace with @mydomain.com
I did a bit of experiment with UltraEdit32 on some sample docs and altough
it finds and replaces all occurances of the string the docs then cannot be
opened by Word. I suspect that there is some arithmetic checksum embedded in
the docs and Word wasn't happy as this wouldn't resolve correctly.
I could get the users to do it one-by-one but there are many hundreds of
templates and standard letters/documents that get emailed/posted out to
clients.
In some cases the email addresses are in the body of the docs and some have
them in text-boxes as part of header/footers. To go through each individual
document will take weeks so I am trying to find a better way of doing it. I
am aiming to keep the replacing string the same physical length as the
original by adding a space at the end.
If anyone has any suggestions I'd be greatly obliged.

Word retains printer settings
Hi, I have multiple users who have a problem with Microsoft Word printing.
If they make any settings like change the tray from the default setting, the
next time they go into word and print, these settings are retained and not
back to default.
This means half the time they think they are printing to the default plain
paper, but actually printed to the letterheaded paper because they forgot
they printed letterheaded earlier in the day.
This problem only occurs to several users, 80+ people work with same
printers and software and are ok.
All users use Win XP SP2 and Office 2003 SP3. Thanks. Tag: can't install office 2003, won't accept product key Tag: 293292

Formatting Options Within Charts in MS Word?
Hi folks,
I'm working on a document with charts throughout, and my editor has
made a request that I'm not sure I can comply with given MS Word's
capabilities.
Legends in charts; I have chart legends with 5-6 labels where some
labels occupy a single line and some are longer and hence occupy 2
lines. Word appears to automatically space chart legends so that the
legend keys (the little colored squares) are equidistant. This means
that there looks like there's a line space below the one-line entries.
Is there any way to shift the legend entries around so that this
illusion disappears?
Any and all suggestions welcome. :)

Why are my Office programs stalling?
When I use Word, Office and Excel, every few minutes my cursor turns into the
hourglass and just hangs there for about 10 seconds. I think this started
after I installed Acrobat Professional 8, so I uninstalled it to download
some Office updates, etc.
The hang ups didn't occur while Acrobat wasn't running, and started again
when I reinstalled it (I think). However, uninstalling Acrobat a second time
didn't fix the stalling, so I've reinstalled it and am trying not to get too
annoyed at the constant stalling. Doesn't happen when I'm using Explorer or
Acrobat.
Any brilliant solutions out there? Tag: can't install office 2003, won't accept product key Tag: 293260
Wildcard characters for instant search
There are apparently no wildcard search characters for instant search in
Office 2007. It would be nice to have some wildcards available for more
flexible searches.
Furthermore, searching for items that include custom fields, for numeric
reference or index numbers, can be difficult without wildcards due to
anomalies in searching for numbers with character separators.
For example, the user may use a custom genealogical field for Outlook
Contacts to sort relatives according to relationship. In such a case, â??Smith
51-10-00-00-00" up to â??Smith 51-19-99-99-99" might represent a specific
branch of the family including children, grandchildren, etcetera in proper
birth order. As such, searching for â??Smith 51-1" would presumably include
everyone in that family line shown above, unfortunately, the actual search
returns zero results.
Perhaps, the search engine is interpreting numbers and delimiters in a way
we do not understand. Nevertheless, we suspect that wildcard search
characters ( "?" for character or "*" for multiple characters) would help
with this type of a search, not to mention with many other more common
searches!

Sending e-mails from Word and IE
I'm running Word 2002, sp3 and IE 7 with all current updates. About a month
ago I began to find that attempting to send an e-mail message from either of
these programs consistently results in a time out of the message attempt. I
get the notice that my mail server has been contacted but that's where it all
stops. As a result I have to hit the Stop and Hide buttons, bring up my
Outlook Express (I don't use Office Outlook) and hit the Send and Receive
button. This will connect and send the message each time.
Has something changed as a result of the updates over the past couple of
months that would prevent messages from being sent from Word 2002 and IE7?

Passing Visio drawings to Excel
I am working in an environment where I am creating documents using Visio
2007. The problem is that not many people in the office have Visio, but they
need to be able to edit the documents every so often.
I want to know if I can embed the Visio 2007 drawing into an Excel 2003
document with limited editing capabilities - such as entering text or
inserting shapes/pictures.
The goal is for someone with Visio to create the document, embed it in an
Excel file, and send it out. The recipient (who does not have Visio) needs
to be able to fill in information in that document and save the changes.
Is this even possible for someone without Visio? Is there an easy way to do
it, or do I need to write a macro?

Windows installer keeps popping up in Outlook 2003
[2008-5-7]
I bought a new powerful laptop with Vista Business and trial Office 2007.
First, I installed Office 2003 side-by-side with Office 2007. Many problems.
So I uninstalled both Office 2003 and 2007, deleted the office folder in
"c:\program files" and the registry, and re-installed Office 2003. Problem
still there: any operation in Outlook will launch Windows installer to
configure Office 2003. ANY OPERATION. Receiving an email, delete an email,
copying some contacts from one pst folder to another...
On my 6-year-old laptop, copying 200 contacts takes 5 seconds, while now on
the brand-new laptop it takes half an hour, with the launching of windows
installer sessions one after another.

Is the 'free' Office 2007 transferrable?
I've got a 'free' version of Office 2007 from the Vista/Office 2007 rollout
event (I received a valid Product Key from MS at the event), and it's time to
get a new computer (I've been spending 25% of my time just trying to keep
this one working!).
I guess that this isn't technically a 'Retail' version as I didn't purchase
it, but it's not OEM either as it wasn't on the machine when I bought it.
Anyone know if this 'free' version of Office 2007 is transferrable to the
new machine? If I don't have to purchase a new copy, it's always nice to
save money...otherwise, I'll order a copy with the new machine.
Thanks,

Equations in Office 2007 cause errors
Hello,
I'm using equations in MS Office Word 2007 often. But many themes, usually
as I use more in one document, Office seems to be unable to save my documents.
How to reproduce:
- Create a new document and save it.
- Insert a few equations (formulas).
- Try to save the document.
- Office prompts to choose a filename (Weird because it's already saved).
- OK, you pick a filename and then you get the errro: A file error has
occured. And the box closes after clicking OK.
In Office I cannot align (center/left/right) anything after a certain point
(same point when you can't save anymore).
Very annoying error.
I did install MS Office SP1.
I get this error on every PC (Win XP Pro).
Anyone knows a fix? Tag: can't install office 2003, won't accept product key Tag: 293168
word 2003 readonly file
Good Morning,
Iâ??m Italian so excuse me if my English is not clear as expected.
Iâ??m writing this technical support request because one of my customers has a
very very strange problem with Microsoft Word upon saving.
Hereâ??s the configuration of the PC:
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2, with all the latest updates
installed;
- Microsoft Office 2003 SP3 Professional Edition;
- NOD32 Antivirus System;
- Spybot Search and Destroy;
- Autocad 2007;
- PDF Creator;
- Some DWG Viewers;
- IBM Client Access for AS/400
My user works with some Word documents, of about 20 Megs-size, with some
pics included.
I searched over various forums in Internet, and I found that Word allows a
maximum of 32 Megs-per-file size, wich is referred to text only.
So, my user should not oversize this limit with her documents.
These documents are all written in different languages, the user is Italian
and the docs are one in Spanish, one in Deutch, one in Portoguese and so on.
The problem is described as follows:
- the user opens the document, works in it in editing mode normally
- then she updates the summary which is placed at the top of the document,
selecting-it all and the choosing â??update fieldâ??
- since this step no errors occurs;
- when saving, totally randomly, word says that is not possible to save the
document because it is in read-only mode, and the user is prompted to save
with another file name.
This is a very strange error.
I tried everything:
- installed Office 2007 with the latest Service Pack 1, same result;
- disabled and uninstalled the Antivirus system, same result;
- copied the files locally, checked the file permissions, everythingâ??s right
but the problem persists;
- searched the web for any possible solutionâ?¦ I tried everything I caught
but the problem persists.
After all these steps I prepared a new computer, and the problem remains
also with the new PC.
So I got no idea about the way to solve the problem.
Is there any fix?
Any procedure to be followed?
Thanks in advance. Tag: can't install office 2003, won't accept product key Tag: 293166

Move autotext from Word 2003 to 2007 Building Blocks
I have tried in vain to move my old autotext entries from Word 2003 to Word
2007 following advice MVP Beth Melton gave on 1/2/2007 to a question by Mike
Kuch: renaming the old Normal.dot to AutoText.dot and placing it into user â??
App.Data â?? Roaming â?? Microsoft â?? DocumentBuildingBlock â?? 1031.
Then I have moved BuildingBlocks.dotx out of this folder, so that there is
only one folder left in the 1031, namely Autotext.dot (which is the renamed
file from normal.dot from Office XP).
It doesnâ??t work with me. To give an example, I write in Word 2007 NYT and
add F3, there will be no reaction, where under Word 2003 it would roduce
"New York Times".
Where is my fault? I would be grateful for help.

I had work done on my computer and the office 2003 was not re-installed.
I've tried numerous times to enter the product key but, it won't accept it.
What do I do now?

Are you using the correct key? It is NOT the one stuck to the case of
the computer. And if it is the correct one, are you reading it
correctly? 8 not a B, 6 not a G etc.

Where did you get the key from? It should be with the CD.

Bob, I got the key from the back of my Gateway, just like it said on the
