You probably can't stop it.
Office 2007 files are really zip files containing XML and other contents.
Because they're zip files, they're automatically compressed, typically to
25% of the size of the expanded contents.
The Office 2003 format is not compressed at all. If you want to compare
apples and apples, zip the 2003 file -- the result will probably still be
larger than the 2007 equivalent, but the difference won't be so dramatic.
