Two NIC cards, one network
Hi,
Is there an easy way to setup my windows 2003 server to utilize both NIC
cards in the server on one network? Right now with both of them configured
if I look at the network utilization one is between 15% and 25% all day and
the other sits around 1%. How can I get both of the cards to be used at
once?
Thanks. Tag: zone transfer Tag: 234169
Problems in using used/refurbished HP Procurve gear?
I have read that using used/refurbished Cisco, at least ones that are
not "Cisco Certified Refurbished Equipment", gear can present a
problem if you ever need support or software upgrades. Specifically
that you need to relicense the Cisco software (see <http://
www.networkworld.com/community/node/14756>). Are there any such
limitations in using HP Procurve gear? Will HP support a switch
bought from a company like Network Liquidators <http://
www.networkliquidators.com/>, like they would any other out of
warranty switch? Tag: zone transfer Tag: 234165
Can't Find Driver
I'm having extreme difficulty getting internet working on Win2k. Going
through the network setup wizard doesn't create any connections, and
I'm pretty sure that's because there are no network drivers showing up
under Device Manager. I haven't been able to find a suitable driver
thus far.
Does anyone know where I can find the correct driver? I am using the
on-board ethernet port on an Asus A8N5X motherboard. Thanks. Tag: zone transfer Tag: 234158

Test Server naming confusion
We have a web server (serverA) that is giving us some trouble. It is
running Windows 2000 Server and is joined to a domain. We used the
bootable VMWare CD and extracted an image of the computer that has
been giving us trouble. Our plan is to experiment with a fix for this
machine on the VM, so that we don't cause more trouble with the live
machine during maintenance. We copied that image to another machine
running VMWare player then removed the network connection and the VM
(still named serverA) will boot up fine. Our problem is that we need
to get this machine on the network without affecting the original
machine (the one we got this image from).
My question has a few parts:
While this VM computer is running while off the network, if we were to
rename this computer to serverB and change the IP address, when we
reconnect it to the network, will we then be able to join it to the
domain, or should I create a computer account with the new computer's
name (serverB) in AD Users and Computers before introducing it to the
network?
Will there be some sort of cached information that will cause a
problem with serverA's computer account?
Any help or ideas would be most welcome

Use CMD to get network adapter stats
Hello everyone.
I am trying to figure out a way to use the command line to get the current
speed and duplex information from the current adapter. I imagine there is a
way to do this, but I have not been able to find the answer. I have looked
through the Windows 2000 Recourse Kit tools but cannot find what I am looking

I hope someone can help me with this.

How to I remotely schedule backups on network PCs
I need to schedule backups to run once on approximately 30 PCs on the
network. Most of the PCs already use task scheduler and ntbackup to backup
files to a server. But I need to run a seperate one time backup of
particular folders on each of the PCs. I'd like to schedule the one time
backups to run at scattered times over this weekend.
I'm hoping to avoid physically sitting down at each workstation to schedule
the task. I'd like to simply create a batch file and then somehow add a
scheduled task without going to each PC. My biggest problem is how to
schedule the tasks remotely. Or is there a completely better way to do
this? (should I instead schedule the server to pull the backups from the
PCs?)
I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks! Tag: zone transfer Tag: 234132
Can't access shares on server
Okay, here goes! One of our servers (Win2k Server) had a drive go out on the
built in RAID. I never could get the RAID to rebuild so I installed a new
RAID card and new drives. I restored our old drive to the new RAID via our
tape backup but the the server wouldn't boot (blue screen of death with a
"Boot device is inaccessible" error. Did a reinstall of Windows and the
server will now boot. I have managed to get a number of minor issues worked
out but today I have run into a problem that I can't figure out.
Our company computer network is made up of many PCs and several Macintosh
computers. I can access all shares from any of the PCs but I can't get
connected from a Mac even though the Macs are trying to access the SMB
shares. I find several errors in the System Log that might apply:
Source: RASMAN Event ID: 20035
Remote Access Connection Manager failed to start because it could not create
buffers. Restart the computer. Access is denied.
Source: Service Control Manager Event ID: 7023
The Remote Access Connection Manager Service terminated with the following
error: Access is Denied.
Both of these errors sound like the Administrator login for the server
doesn't have access to something. Could this be some kind of permissions
issue?
I find these errors in the Application log:
Source: Usernav Event ID: 1000
The Group Policy client-side extension security was passed flags (17) and
returned a failure status code of (1208)
Source:ESENT Event ID: 412
Services(244) unable to read the log header. Error -530
Source: ESENT Event ID: 454
Services(244) Database recovery/restore failed with unexpected error -530.
Does anyone have any idea what might be going on? Even better, how do I fix
the problem? I would be okay with deleting some services and re-installing
them or even deleting users and rebuilding them. But it would be nice to know
what the problem was before I took off deleting stuff. Thanks for any
assistance! Tag: zone transfer Tag: 234131

windows 2000 can't detect windows server 2003 Domain
Hi to all pros out there,
i will try to clarify the problem i am facing,
previously this company have a PDC (windows NT 4.0) with domain name
(WORLDGROUP) with a few Server (windows 2000) connected to the domain network
as member of the domain. Now they want to replace the old NT 4.0 machine to
new machine with (windows server 2003)
so firstly, i install the windows server 2003 with domain name (WORLDGROUPC)
then link it to the network. after that, i have migrated from the NT 4.0
(WORLDGROUP) to WIN2003 (WORLDGROUPC)
then after that, they said they want to use WORLDGROUP as the domain name, so
i have rename the Domain Name from WORLDGROUPC to WORLDGROUP by using
Microsoft Domain Renaming Tool.
After that, by using one of the serverABC with windows 2000 that connected to
the domain. i disjoin the ServerABC from domain WORLDGROUP and simply join a
workgroup, then i disconnect the old NT (WORLDGROUP) machine from the network
and connect the new Win2003 (WORLDGROUP) *after renaming* machine to the
network.
After that, i disjoin the serverABC windows 2000 from workgroup, and try to
join back to WORLDGROUP, but this time, is the new machine win2003 with the
same Domain Name.
The serverABC just wouldn't join, it keep on showing the domain Name
WORLDGROUP couldn't not be found. (it seem like the serverABC win2000 still
have some cache memory that referring back to the old (winNT) WORLDGROUP
instead of the new (win2003)WORLDGROUP.
i have tried to use XP machine to join the new WORLDGROUP win2003, and
everything works fine, only win2000 seem to kept on referring back to the old
(winNT) WORLDGROUP.
it seem kinda confusing, but this is what really happened in this company
right now >.<
really appreciated to any help provided
thanks in advance
regards,
Vince

Remind me
I asked this question about a year ago and I forgot to write down the
answer. My oops.
My L.A. network is extremely slow at local resolution. When I go to explorer
to find a file on another computer it often takes several minutes for the
drive to appear in the explorer window. Once it appears, then the connection
works very fast, but until then you wait.
Now I had been told that the problem originated in the network protocol
because the network was waiting for a reply from a non-existent internet
connection (apparently it sets this up by default) The solution was rather
simple. All you needed to do was delete a registry key and every thing would
work just fine after that. Problem is; I can't remember the key. Can anybody
remind me?

Netbios name issues on AD server
I have an active directory / wins / DNS server, Server1, which
resolves to ip address 10.0.0.1. In its domain, I've got another
server, Server2, which has the ip address 10.0.0.2.
My problem is as follows:
When I run nslookup on Server2, from Server1, the correct ip address
is returned: 10.0.0.2.
When I check the wins service on Server1, the correct ip address is
returned: 10.0.0.2.
If, however, I try to ping the name "Server2", it resolves to 10.0.0.1
-- which is actually Server1!
Similarly, if I run nbtstat on "Server2, 10.0.0.1 is returned
(incorrectly), but this time with Server2's MAC address!

Can't connect to a wireless network in Windows 2000
I cannot get a wireless network connected in Windows 2000 Pro.
I have set up a home wireless network with a Netgear router and two
computers, one Windows XP and the second a MACBook, both of which network
connect OK. A third machine, an IBM Thinkpad running Windows 2000 Pro (SP4)
is a problem.
It has a Sweex PC card, which detects my network, but will not connect. It
just says "waiting for peer...".
One thing that concerns me is when I open "Network connections and Dial Up
connnections" and right click the LAN icon labelled for the Wireless card.
The menu shows no items for "View available wireless networks", "status" or
"repair".
In Windows XP, "Properties" gives access to the network password setting,
but I do not get this access in Windows 2000 and so I cannot set the network
password.
(The network icon is labelled "Local area connection" , but shows "802.11g/b
Wireless LAN Client Adapter" when the mouse hovers).

Incorrect Alternate DNS Server
Hello,
We recently removed a W2K Server that was acting as a secondary DNS

When I look at individual workstations on the network I see that they

The old DNS server does not show up in Active Directory Sites &

secondary servers the replication looks like it is working fine.

I have an SBS 2003 server running a SQL database application off of
it's "T" drive. If I run disk cleanup while database usage is high the

Therefore, we get the 10 sessions limit.
The problem is idle sessions don't get disconnected at all (they show

is still there even after a reboot.

NDTG (NetDesicion Traffic Grapher) (MRTG/PRTG type application)
The NetDecision Traffic Grapher
(http://www.netmechanica.com/products/?prod_id=1022)
monitors network and bandwidth usage as well as various other network
parameters like memory usage and CPU utilization, providing system
administrators with live readings and periodical usage trends to
optimize the efficiency, layout, and setup of leased lines, switches,
routers, firewalls, servers, and other network components.
NetDecision Traffic Grapher is an easy to use software that monitors
network parameters via SNMP or using custom scriptable polling agents.
It allows you to quickly and easily set up and run a monitoring
station for networks. With just a few mouse clicks you can log the
amount of data flowing through routers, monitor CPU and RAM
utilization, check disk space usage, etc.
The most common case is monitoring the bandwidth usage of leased
lines, routers, and firewalls via SNMP. You can also monitor many
other aspects of your network environment and computer
infrastructure.
NDTG provides out-of-the-box graphs and dashboards for CPU
utilization, memory usage, disk space usage, interface utilization,
service response times, interface errors etc. This helps users gain
better visibility into the performance of servers, routers and
switches and the overall network.
NDTG makes network performance monitoring effortless to set up and
users can quickly get live, daily, weekly, monthly, annual or custom
period graphs out-of-the-box.
NDTG allows users to setup monitoring of custom SNMP MIB variables.
Traffic Grapher makes network performance monitoring truly vendor-
independent. You only need access to the SNMP MIBs provided by your
vendor. Traffic Grapher allows you to monitor critical parameters of
any device and setup thresholds.
NDTG simplifies the process of setting up initial monitoring
configuration by discovering network devices such as routers,
switches, servers, printers etc automatically. Tag: zone transfer Tag: 234057
Network troubleshooting tips? (slow file transfer)
I'm looking for some advice on how to troubleshoot a network I'm
having some problems with.
It's just a simple peer-to-peer, with about ten workstations. Most of
the PCs are WinXP Pro but the PC I'm having problems with is our
'file' server and it has Win2K SP4 installed on it.
It does very little else other than act as a File Server and a Daily
Backup (automated). It's been fine for about two years but suddenly,
and I mean very suddenly, the file copy time from one PC to another
has increased dramatically.
I have some automated jobs that copy a lot of files across the network
(a couple hundred files, ranging in size from 5kb to 20mb) and this
job used to take about 5-6 minutes. Now it takes over 20.
Also, this network is 'isolated'; it has absolutely no Internet access
(not even physically). Even so, I ran Spybot and an AV program to
check and see if something had inadvertantly been added. These
programs came up negative.
I ran Network Monitor which showed that indeed the slowdown is with
network traffic. At times, the data transfer speed is as low as
50-60kb/sec. Most of the network cards we use are 10mbs (a few are
100mbs).
I've checked the task manager and it shows very little CPU usage even
during the file transfers.
I've checked the disk space and we're using only about 50gb out of the
150gb available.
528mb RAM, Pentium IV, some ASUS motherboard.
Rebooted a couple of times, no joy.
File copy 'within' the local drive (from Drive C t Drive C) is fine.
I doubt that anyone has tinkered with the PC or the network settings
as no one really has access to that room, and wouldn't know what to do
to screw it up anyway. It's my job to screw it up. :)
Ugh...
I really, really, really get discouraged with Windows occasionally... Tag: zone transfer Tag: 234054

Windows 2000 Pro. sp4 crashes my router.
I have a Airlink 101 AR680W 4 port/wireless router. I have 4 XP sp2
hardwired computers and 3 wireless laptops that work with no problem at all.
If I plug in my Windows 2000 Pro. into the router it crashes the router. What
I mean by "crash" is that all four of the lights that indicate traffic flow
on each port blink at a very fast rate, you can still network on the LAN, but
no-one can access the internet, it times out.
This sometimes takes an hour or two to happen, other times it happens in
seconds. If I unplug the Win. 2000 cable, reset the DSL modem and routher
everything works again. I also plugged in a D-Link router and got the same
results.
I've looked at the MS knowledge base and found a few things that might have
been the problem but the fixes didn't work for me.
Any help is appriciated.

all of a sudden, network password required?
I have a 2 computer LAN and it's been working fine, with no problem
accessing either computer from the other and moving files around. There are
no passwords required for access.
Today I had a corruption on one computer's C: drive and had to boot up to
another Win2000 installation on the E: drive. Networking is functioning in
the sense that the internet works on both computers(via a router), but when
I try to access folders in #1 computer from #2 computer via My Network
Places, a window pops up requiring a network password, with two lines to be
filled, Connect As and Password. I'm stumped here since there is no
password that I know of. How can I troubleshoot this.
If I try the same type of access from #1 to #2, I get a message that says
"the password of this user has expired". But this particular user name has
administrator priviledges and also "password never expires" checked.
What to do? I'd appreciate some suggestions.

Need EMC AX150 help BADLY, lost major share after reboot. HELP
A client of mine has a 2003 server environment and a clariion
AX1500SCI, he had a backup drive h:\ and then his c: drive was inflated
much biggger that usual, which is an HP server acticing as a
controller. He also installed Exchange on the server that is dishing
out the EMC data. It was a bad purchase, like a10 man office, so they
got ripped off.
Anyways, this is all iSCSI, and in Navisphere I have 2 virtual disks
Backup (drive H: which holds all the backup to disk stuff) and the
Data, which houses the roaming profiles and user data, each about 400
GB in size. They are both assigned to the exchange server, and show as
connected.
Now, within the MS iSCSI initiator properties, I have everything set
for both volumes to be persistent, whenI go to the bound
voulumes/devices tab I see "H:\" and then
"\\?\Volume\9bb23848-fe31-11db-bcbe-0019bbe55910}\".
It has been a while since I have used EC, but H does show up in my
computer and is browsable, just back-up dats. the other volume doesnt
show and should contain the 2 shares and usually fals under c:\, if I
try to remove the odd one from the bind tab it says it doesnt exist,
but I can remove H:\.
I really need to get the DATA, even if I mount it as another drive,
anyone have any ideas?? I tried calling EMC, but they were completely
useless. Everything was fine until someone rebooted the server. I
didn't set this up, the firm that did took off, I am just trying to
help them get functioning again. Tag: zone transfer Tag: 234013

AD client server communication mechanism
Hi there,
In W23 server AD will the client PC(XP, W2K) query login servers
across all my enterprise if my subnet DC is down? Also question re.
browsing company wide resources across servers, is the client PC doing
the query or the server on behalf of the client.
What communication ports are used for AD?

cannot see a computer in My Network Places
Hi eveyone!
I have this issue that has been going on for about 8 months now and i CANT
seem to resolve it. If you can help it would be GREAT!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Issue:
I Have a computer on a remote network that cannot be seen on my windows 2000
server (in My Network Places). HOWEVER, you can type the netbios name in
directly and access all the shares on that remote computer. ALSO, you can
access the remote computer's shares by typing in the IP address. You can
obviously ping the remote computer as well
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have been told that it has to do with the browser service, but I dont know
how the heck that works (I have printed out the microsoft document, but it
was just too confusing) and no-one can give me step-by-step instructions on
how to resolve my issue.
If someone can help i would be overjoyed!! :D
Many Thanks

Coservers and Virtual server not communicating
Hi,
We have installed Everrun FT of Marathon server on windows 2003
servers. The Coservers and the virtual servers have been configured.
Also, a workstation has been configured to connect to the virtual
server. The Virtual Server is speaking to the CoServers and the
workstation. But, the Coservers and the workstation are not speaking
to the virtual servers.
Could you please advice me on the changes to be done.
Thanks and Regards,

setup shared pcs
I have setup 2 PCs identically. Both have Windows 2000 Professional. Both
PCs are sharing a router for Internet access. I have mapped the both
hardrives to the other PC to make sure I have some kind of emergency way
in...(hopefully). What I would like to do is allow users to login to either
PC and their profile to be shared as one common profile so that regardless
of which PC they login to, they will see the same profile information... ie.
"My Documents" for the user that is logged in would synchronize? to the
other PC. Is there a way of doing this? Is there an more viable solution?
Thank you,

Auto start up
I am told there are about 20 - 30 specific places where a program can hide
in the registry and be automatically started up when the system boots. Can
anybody list all these places? Tag: zone transfer Tag: 233992
Laptop does not allow access.
I have a small network at home.
Once networked in a workgroup each computer can see the others. I have a
desktop (1) and two laptops (lets call them computers 2 and 3). Laptop 2 is
a HP machine and Laptop 3 is a toshiba. Brand has nothing to do with the
problem.
Laptop 2 shows up on the network neighborhood directories of the others,
but, when the other computers try to access laptop they get the following
message.
"\\jmlaptop is not accessible.
The network path was not found.
When I ping the laptop I get it just fine and Laptop #2 can access both of
the other coputers just fine.
I think I have fixed this before by reinstalling tcp/ip drivers.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,
I have a W2K3 DNS server. How would I give permission to a Unix BIND9
DNS server in order to transfer a zone from Unix and make it a
secondary on W2K3 DNS? Thanks, T
