    - Firewall help for my network Hello and thanks for any help or advice... I have a small network in my office. I'm connected to a DSL via a Linksys router. One port connects to my main "office" computer that has my email client, billing system, etc. This is loaded with Zonealarm and Superantispyware Professional so that machine if covered as best as can be. I also have 6 other small Dell GX150 machines connected together via a Linksys 8-port switch. That switch is also connected to one of the ports on the router. One of the 6 machines has internet access in that I have Firefox and Zonealarm on it. The others are used for rendering video files, only. There is also a 2T network-capable hard drive connected to the switch to archiving large files from any of the 6 machines. How vulnerable are these other 5 machines (and the HD) to hackers in that they are all on the network with only the Linksys firewall to protect them? Can (should) I install a second NIC card in that 6th "internet" computer and connect that to the router rather than connecting the 8-port switch and would that do anything to isolate the 5 other computers?     - No connection from Vista to W2K Pro Share - Unable to login to sha Network: Windows 2000 Pro systems, with a share on a Windows 2000 Pro system. Static IP addresses. One of the systems died and was replaced with a new system (from Fry's) with Vista Home Basic (not what I would have chosen). The existing Windows 2000 Pro systems are working fine. The new system (Vista) can PING the address of the share (192.168.1.1) and, after removing Symantec Internet Security (no internet access anyway) the W2K share machine can PING the address of the Vista box (192.168.1.3) I have gotten the Vista machine to see the share machine - once. Trying to connect got the login box, where I enterred the username and password of the share system and couldn't connect. I tried using the commands "net view" and "net use" without success - access denied. The system was refusing my network password - even when I'd reset it on both systems. The hardware is new enough that there aren't drivers on the HP website to load for Windows 2000 Pro (which I'd load), XP or even Linux.     - VPN....May be Off Topic This may be off topic, but I couldn't find the right group for it... I went to a site that had a VPN/Router device. It looked as if it was in bridged ethernet mode with Bellsouth's Netopia device because the DSL sign on information was in the VPN/Router. I'm used to only seeing this information on the Netopia, and having the VPN or router device pull an IP from the Netopia. Ok well it seems that Bellsouth reset all the settings on the Netopia. The only way to get the Internet to work was to tell the VPN/Router to pull an IP automatically from the Netopia device. That was fine until I tried to reestablish the VPN. I'm aware that VPN's may have problems with NAT. I assumed that the original tech setup the router in bridged ethernet so that it would "look" as if the VPN/Router held the Netopia's public IP thereby facilitating the VPN connection. Instead I left it as is, and used IP Passthrough on the Netopia to the VPN/Router. However, users are complaining that the connection to the remote software shifts in speed. Could this be because of IP passthrough? Or could it be just their cruddy DSL that keeps going out? Tag: rpc server issue Tag: 234293

    - Linking a network share to a local directory on the C:\ Hi, I'm trying to see, if it's possible to have a virtual link, i think it's called a junction which directs a local directory, let's say c:\temp to a mapped network drive. So as an example if I want to view the contents of my mapped g:\networkshare in my c:\temp directory how do I do it? I'm basically trying to fool the old version of MS sql desktop into putting the database on a network filer instead of the local c:\ which is a desktop so I can back up the DB on the server.     - losing shares when removing fileserver from domain Hello, I have a strange issue when moving the server from a domain to a workgroup. What I am planning to do is to p2v production a current fileserver to an esx server. This goed well and have an exact copy of the fileserver virtually, but before to connect the server to the network and restore a backup of the data I first change the ip address, hostname and move it to a workgroup (while p2v I kept the SID). As soon I reboot the shares are gone. I can still see the shares in the registry (HKLM->SYSTEM->CCS- >Services->Lanmanserver) What could be the cause for this?     - Wrong Network I have a remote system I need to connect to. Unfortunately, the last tech did not change the IP to DHCP. So the system is on a 192.168.0.XXX address. The rest of the network is on 192.168.2.XXX. No one is in the office right now, but that system is still on. Is there any possible way to connect to that system so I can change it's IP?     - network setup issues I am trying to setup a LAN network with 3 computers, 2 running w2K and 1 running W98se. last nite I finally got 2/3rds of the network to see the other computers and share files(both W2k computers). This morning they are choosing not to share and one of them sees all 3 computers and the other sees only 2. (I have closed and refreshed the network screen several times) The W98se computer is the one providing the ICS and I get the message "Unable to browse the network. Windows is unable to gain access to the network. This may be for a number of reasons." I can see the W98se computer from the other 2 and I can share files with it but not the other way around. I am unable to connect to the web with the W2k computers. I read somewhere that having a blank password could cause some instability with networking. Is this true? Why?     - Network Connection Problem I am working on network connected controllers, controlled from PCs. The PCs open a network connection (TCPIP socket connection) to a controller and then carry on a conversation with the controller, monitoring inputs and switching outputs. That part works fine. Our software will connect to a device work fine. If the device turns off or is disconnected, the connection failure is detected and then reconnected and operation resumes. The problem is this: During testing with mulitple controllers, we normally only have one operational controller and the rest have failed connections. Only the controller that we are currently testing is actually present in the test environment. In this situation the one working device won't connect. We have changed the number of devices that are attempting to connect, and fewer devices allows the one working device to connect; but why? A failed connection takes about 13 seconds to fail, and doesn't cause much communication or processing. The network traffic is minimal. When the connection succeeds, the connection works exactly as normal. There doesn't seem to be any performance degradation - if it works it works fine. On a fresh install of windows (XP or Vista) the test system works fine with 24 failed devices and one working. On my development systems, it won't work. I even get the same effect if I run a simulator on the same PC that is running the test so that I am connecting to 127.0.0.1 and have no network connection to any other devices. I have turned off all unneccessary protocols and applications. I can't find any difference in the drivers. Any help or suggestions appreciated. Steve Tag: rpc server issue Tag: 234262

    - Switching speed Hi all, I have a Dell 2800 server with 1 Ghz switches made by Dell (2624)(2716)(2716) hooked to the network. PC's are hooked to the each switch (14 on the network). The second switch is connected to the first switch and the third switch is connected to the second switch. My question is this. Are 1 Ghz switches all created equal? Do switches boost signal? Why do some on the third switch run at such slow speeds, while others run as if connected to the first switch? And last is there a website that talks about switching speeds and compares the brands?     - DNS Communication Issues We currently have an all Windows 2000 server network setup. It is configured with one parent domain and 6 child domains. From time to time we have an issue where we lose communication by name with a couple of hour domain controllers in the branch offices. At these tiem we can ping by FQDN but not NETBIOS name. At these times, we also lost the child domains in question from Network Neighborhood. Once we reboot the servers, it works fine but then a few days later, the same problem again. It is always the same 2 servers that have this issue. There are no errors of any kind in the event logs and after using DNS logging on the main DNS servers I see no problems there either. Pinging by IP address is never an issue. A little more about my setup: There are 3 servers being used as the Primary DNS servers.     - Double Network Cards Hello All, I am wondering if thsi setup is possible on a Windows 200 SP4 Machine. I would like to use a Dual Network Card setup such that one netwkr card is sued to connected to the domain at my office and the second card can be used to assign a static IP address and connect my PC to a PLC Controller. I can do this using a single card, but it involves me disconnecting from the Work network, and over-writing the TCP/IP settings on the nwetork card. I need NIC1 to use a DHCP Assigned IP Address, and NIC2 to use the static 192.168.1.250. NIC2 would only be communicating with a PLC using a PLC Design/Programming application.     - Can not establish Trust Relationship I have 2 PDC's. Server2 in Domain 2, & Server3 in Domain 3. I just created Server2 as the previous one (running NT4), died after many years. All the boxes are on a class 2 subnet & all see each other. Following the tradition procedure in active directory/ ...trust /. entering passwords from both boxes doesn't work.     - time sync issue hey all, i have a simple 2 computer test network i'm on. computer1 = windows 2000 server sp4 computer2 = xp pro sp2 when i use net time on both computers computer1 looks ok to me (local and domain say 9:20 AM which looks right to me) when i use it on computer2 the domain shows 10:20 AM and local shows 9:20 AM.     - Win 2000 Folder Move Restictions and Delete Questions Hello, I have a customer who is becoming impossible to work with. She's requesting things I've never had to deal with before. The first is: She wants everyone (5 users) to read, access and update files and folders that they would normally would given their access rights on the shares etc.. She wants to be the only one to have the ability to move folders from one directory to another for fear of a user moving things and not knowing where it went. Is this possible??? The other thing is, she wants to know if a file or folder deleted from a network drive (from a mapped drive on the users PC) could go into a recycle bin or be retrieved in any way.     - DNS client resolution and DNS server order Hi there, If I have 2 x W2K3 DNS servers in DNS client lease, I noticed sometimes the client does not query both servers in sequence but it stops at first DNS.     - renewing IP address at startup after removing router :-) I connected my Win2000 machine to my DSL (Telenet Belgium) modem through a router (D-Link DI-604) yesterday, just to test the router. Now that I've connected the computer directly to the DSL modem again, it fails to automatically get a dynamically assigned IP address at startup, and I have to do an "ipconfig /renew" each time. Apparently Windows still thinks the router will take care of the IP address.     - Website accessing files on virtual directory I have a Windows 2000 server with IIS 6.0 hosting a website. This website accesses and posts pictures via a virtual directory that is located on a separate 2003 server. Our web programmer has built a function to manipulate these pictures and repost them (change color, B&W, etc). This function works with images that are located local on the webserver and images located on a Network Storage device (Buffalo Teraserver - no o/s) but when trying this with the images located on the 2003 server it does not work.     - Lost my connection Hi, I set up a simple home network between a desktop running XP Home and router (the anchor), a laptop running XP Home and a laptop running 2000 Pro. All the connections worked fine. I then added a little more security using a WEP password on the desktop. The XP Home connected fine after I typed in the password. The 2000 machine has balked. I never get a dialog box asking for a password (key). I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the wireless card with no success. Actually, the 2000 machine never gives me an option for wireless. I have an HP Proliant G1 running win server 2003 sp2 that was working fine
till a colleague applied the following patch: It was the Proliant Support
Pack for Windows Server 2003 (version 8.00a, 25 Feb 2008).

Then we had trouble with HP NIC teaming. HP Support talked us through driver
and NCU downgrades to older versions compatible with our old G1 box and got
the network running again as far as pings and browse requests go.

We are still having trouble however with remote desktop connections TO the
server in question. It gives us an error message to do with 'RPC server
unavailable'.

I find that the list of services does not contain any reference to Net Logon
service. It is absent. I cannot find other servers in the local MS network
and cannot use NET VIEW or NET USE.

Any suggestions on how to resurect this old box to fully fucntionality ?
