Moving the role of File/Print Server to New Win2k3 Box !!!!!!
Hi!
Can anybody give step-by-step on how to move the role of a Print/File
Server from one Windows Server 2003 box to another ?
I basically have 3 Server in our office
1) DCSRV01 - Win2k3 Domain Controller
2) EXSRV01 - Exchange - 2003 ( Additional DC)
3) FPSRV01 - Win2k3 - File and Print Server
I will be setting up a new Storage Server and wish to transfer the role of
FPSRV01 to the new Storage Server with less or no changes being done on the
Client computers.
Pl suggest

Naming a Win PC workgroup on a LAN
Hello,
What is the correct way to name a Win PC workgroup on a LAN? Seems any
non-spaced word is acceptable. Now, the network setup wizard provides
options for a domain name "name.dns" (Business connection), if not
chosen the only Net ID would be the workgroup name, presumably ok for
peer to peer interactions in a home LAN.
Now if the system is to be networked with UNIX machines, FreeBSD and
others how should this be best handled?
I have a system so set up, using just the workgroup name and using the
same name on the UNIX machines, no DNS extensions. However, the system
seems to have some instabilities, sometimes it works fine and other
times it doesn't => with responses of "Mixedgroup is not accessible. The
network name cannot be found." in a Windows Explorer Dialog Box.

Weekly Hottest Computer Free tips (30-10-07)
Weekly Hottest Computer tips
Hello Dear,
Computer Free Tips will give you practical advice, great tips, and few
tricks every weekday. This newsletter is sent out every Tuesday and is
designed for those who love to learn Computer in detail. These are the
Hottest Computer Tips of the last week.
1- How to protect your computer with advanced backup and recovery?
A backup is a duplicate copy of a file, program or disk that can be
used if the original copy is lost, damaged, or destroyed. Thus, if you
regularly take backups of your sensitive data or programs and update
them as and when needed, system failures can be covered easily through
these backups.
http://www.computerfreetips.com/oct_computer_tips/27_ghost_backup.html
2- How is virus activated on your computers?
There are different methods through viruses may be transferred from
one computer to another. Now- a-days, most of the viruses spread due
to receiving unknown e-mail messages that contains viruses. When a
user opens such an infected message, the virus is also loaded into the
computer memory.
http://www.computerfreetips.com/oct_computer_tips/25_virus_activated.html
3- How to detect viruses in a computer using multiple antivirus
engines?
Virus detection and its removal are made through an antivirus program
which finds out viruses in a computer and then possibly removes or
repairs the virus problem. But today an interesting tip, how to scan
your system without any installed antivirus program.
http://www.computerfreetips.com/oct_computer_tips/23_detect_viruses.html
4- How to Enable Boot Logging to troubleshoot windows startup
problem?
You can troubleshoot many of computer startup problems using windows
boot logging. When you start you computer with enable boot logging
feature, a log file will be created to identify the drivers and
services that is creating the problem during startup.

Internet Connection Wizard
At step 3 of 3 in the Microsoft Internet Connection Wizard where the
prompt is to give a name to , in this case, a new dial-up connection
the system will not accept any name that is given to it no matter what
I seem to enter.
This makes no difference to anything and is preventing me from getting
back online when my cable is down and I have to use dial-up.

anti-virus suggestions
We got Symantec Endpoint which is a very impressive program. The
problem is that it's so high end that our systems are slowing to a
crawl. We have 5 year old systems in a network that run Windows
2000/2003 servers with 60 clients. Is there any anti-virus with
centralized management that won't slow older hardware down? Tag: favorites Tag: 233637
Network Issues keep on going Semaphore Timeout ?
Recent issues with a laptop are still ongoing.
The laptop can see and has access to each of the other computers as it
should. The other computers can see the laptop, but, can not access the
directories properly.
The last error I got was that the "network path was not found".
I recently had to delete the TCP/IP protocol and reinstall it. after doing
this everything was up.
Sorry for the long preamble - How do we set the variables / parameters for
the networking?
Even a hint would be good. Thanks

3 sec deadtime by opening windows shares
Hi,
we have a mixed network (Windows 2000 AD/ Netware eDirectory)
When try to access a Netware share - the content is listet prompt.
When try to access a Windows share - the content is listet after a pause.
The same occurs, when open a link with unc-path, or when we klick on a
mapped drive.
The second time the link/share opens immediatly.
I suppose this is a problem of the master browser settings.
Whe have a Wins-Server and the clients are configured to use the
Wins-Server.

logon window disappeared
I am using a win 2k pro desktop as the server and internet connection sharing
computer for a home network. Clients are both running win xp home. Using a
Linksey router/access point ethernet connection to the desktop. Both other
computers, a Gateway laptop, and a Dell desktop are wireless.(live in very
rural area, nothing but dialup available.) My question involves security.
When I first set this up you had to logon to the server computer to access
files or printers. All of a sudden this disappeared and now it is open

active directory usage on client PC
Hi there,

Access Denied
Hi,
We have 3 Win2000 Server SP4 on the network. 2 Members and 1 DC. I sometime
have to fix my collegue computers and want to use resources on the network
like shares folders and Internet access. Because the employes PC don't need
to be part of the Domain, I connect to servers by typing the server name in
the run box like \\servername.
Then a logon windows shows up and requires a domain user name. I type in a
username and can see and access all available shares on the server. This
works fine on member servers but doesn't on the DC? I got the following :
\\servername is not accessible....Rights...Please contact.... and then
Access Denied.
How can I make this work on the DC since I have to access share files? I
don't understand why by provinding a username and a password, I manage to
connect to member servers but this one won't even let me go further in the
connecting process. This DC replaced a another one a while ago and on the
olf one, I could access it that way! I took a look at DC and Domain Security
policy and can't figured out if there is anything wrong.
How can I fix this please?
Thanks in advance.

VPN
Hey gurus,
I have one main office(20 users) and two remote offices(5 users, 10
users). The main office has Small Business Server. All clients are
windows XP. Each office has static IP ADSL.
Can I do this:
each remote office connects via VPN to main office and becomes part of
same domain as at main office (eg connect to Exchange, dhcp, browse
shares etc) but when remote office users browse web, their web traffic
stays off the VPN.
Always grateful for advice. All offices have nice ADSL routers but more
hardware can be had if needed.

DNS question
Hi there,
I will be migrating to active directory. We currently use Unix DNS
inside and outside. While I can use windows 2003 DNS in active
directory on the inside to replace present Unix inside name
resolution, can I also forward the external DNS queries from the
inside W2K3 DNS to our outside DNS server to be resolved?
Our outside DNS server also holds our domain.

Hi,
We only run workgroups on our network, we do not have a domain. The
other day the boss asked me to change the network settings so that all
computers would be on the same workgroup. At the end of the day I
had one more computer to go, I was in a rush and accidently set it to

requires a password and a domain to connect to.
I want to get this computer network settings back to using
workgroups. How do I do this? I have tried safe boot but no luck.

Windows 2000 port filtering
Hi Guys,
We have a Windows 2000 IIS box that used to be hosted offsite but is now on
our office connection. We have tried to enable RDP through its LAN interface
(which was disabled, but we have now turned on) however it does not work.
The LAN interface allows the IIS box to ping all our local machines by IP
address, but telnet and all other types of RDP/Remote Control apps do not
work.
The IP filters and IPSEC stuff is all empty (not enabled) under the
properties of TCP/IP for the network card, so I am wondering if this is
possibly enabled through the registry.
Also, there does not appear to be any software based firewalls and what not
on the server so it will be nothing to do with 3rd party software.
Thanks in advance. Tag: favorites Tag: 233611
Windows 2000 port filtering/blocking
Hi,
We have a web server that was previously hosted offsite, but is now on our
office connection behind a seperate firewall. It has two nics, one of the WAN
and one for the LAN, but the LAN nic was not connected to anything for
security reasons.
We now have connected the LAN nic temporarily to allow RDP access to the web
server from our LAN, but this is not working. We can ping the LAN address of
the web server, and the web server can ping our LAN, but for whatever reason,
RDP wont work. We have removed and re-installed it, but no difference.
I have also tried thrid party utilities for remote control of the system but
these wont work either.
It seems the web server only allows ping traffic to pass over the lan
interface to our network (not even telnet works).
The IP filtering and IPSEC settings for both network cards are empty, so I
am wondering if there are any registry keys or similar that could be blocking
this traffic?
Thanks in advance for your help. Tag: favorites Tag: 233610

Event Viewer Anomoly
I run the company and need to pay attention to technical matters. I
examined the event viewer. What is have listed below are shorted
version of the event. My impression is the event viewer should be
relatively clean.
I asked the Sys Admin to fix these issues. That was weeks ago. Am I
overreacting? I'm thinking the network should be without blemish.
We're using IP addresses to map over the Wan and I prefer FQDN. I told
the Sys Admin it's only three servers and 25 computers -and it
shouldn't be too esoteric to fix things.
Anyway have a look at these persistent events and let me know if I'm

performed with one or more critical servers in order for changes to
propagate across all sites (most often due to the servers being
unreachable).
For (a), please use the Active Directory Sites and Services Manager to
do one of the following:
1. Publish sufficient site connectivity information such that the
system can infer a route by which this Partition can reach this site.
This option is preferred.
2. Add an ntdsConnection object to a Domain Controller that contains
the Partition CN=Configuration,DC=laeyeworks,DC=com in this site from
a Domain Controller that contains the same Partition in another
site.
For (b), please see previous events logged by the NTDS KCC source that
identify the servers that could not be contacted.
These are the most glaring examples. It's just over the wire, a Wan,
office to factory, a three mile distance. With such a tiny network I'd
think our SysAdmin could easily correct these anomalies.

Mapping in a Profile
Hello All,
My LAN consists of a Domain Server and its clients. There are shared folders
on the server for each user, which the user maps on the client login where
he/she logs in. How can I map these individual shares as per the concerned
login?
Eg:
Username: ABC
Username: XYZ
Shared on the server:
D:\ABC
D:\XYZ
If ABC logs in on any computer, his profile should automatically map the
server's \\ABC as his local X:\
and if XYZ logs in elsewhere, his profile should automatically map the
server's \\XYZ as his local X:\

Confusing WIndows 2003 RDP Issue
I have a client at a remote site. They are part of a domain called
domain "1" that is physically located somewhere else. They use a
printer called "printer x". That printer is managed by "server3" in
"domain 1". They connect to a server to use an application via rdp
that sees this networked printer on their domain. The actual printer,
however, is located in their office. When they connect to another
domain's server for a client they do billing for they want to be able
to use that printer as well. But the problem is:
1. that printer is not physically connected to their machine so it
won't be seen as a client printer
2. the printer is networked and shared on another domain.
My question is would it be possible to use that printer when they use
RDP to connect to another server in a different domain? Keep in mind
that on their local machine that printer does come up under printers
as a network printer. Tag: favorites Tag: 233554

DNS and WINS
I have two domain controllers. The first one went down about a month
ago. It served as the primary WINS server. Around this same time one
of the applications we use started to get really slow especially
during printer operations. Under network settings user's systems were
changed to the secondary DC since all the stations were set to look at
the primary DC for DNS. This hasn't changed anything, and I also see a
DNS error in the event viewer. It looks as if the system is trying to
transfer information between the primary and secondary DC. That's fine
since the primary is down. I would expect that.
What I can't figure out is what is causing this slowness. ANy ideas?

Are NICs the gate... or is it the Fiber...?
Howdy,
I have a LAN that includes a 150 meter run of fiber optic
line.
Right now, on each end, our (Win 2000 and XP) systems talk
to each other over that line using 100mbps NICs. Mostly, we
use that remote system to store images of the systems in our
office, and so, the files are sometimes on the order of 20
gig in size. As you would guess, it takes a while...
If we went to 1000mbps NICS, would we see faster speeds, or
would the fiber (or something else) be the gate.
Thanks for any thoughts on this,

http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/75cd0e1f-f464-40ea-ac88-2060e6769f331033.mspx?mfr=true
It mention that I should use supercopses when create scope for each subnet
and assign ip range 50/50 on each dhcp server:
Please correct me if my understanding is not correct, I did the following:
1st DHCP server:
- create scope for each sub.
Eg. subnet 1
IP Range 192.168.0.2-254/24
Gateway is 192.168.0.1
Exclude: 192.168.0.130-254
subnet 2:
IP Range 192.168.1.2-254/24
Gateway is 192.168.1.1
Exclude: 192.168.1.130-254
Create a superscope:SCOPE1 and assign scope subnet 1 and 2 to the superscope
SCOPE1.
2nd DHCP server:
- create scope for each sub.
Eg. subnet 1
IP Range 192.168.0.2-254/24
Gateway is 192.168.0.1
Exclude: 192.168.0.2-129
subnet 2:
IP Range 192.168.1.2-254/24
Gateway is 192.168.1.1
Exclude: 192.168.1.2-129
Create a superscope:SCOPE1 and assign scope subnet 1 and 2 to the superscope
SCOPE1.
Does the above steps correct?
How about the reservation? Should I create same reservation entry on both
DHCP server? Does the reservation still work If one of DHCP server was down?
For the old win2000 dhcp server, ip has been lease to a lot of pc.
Can I just stop the dhcp in the old dhcp server and start the dhcp service
on the 2 new dhcp server? Any error when client pc's lease time expired? Can
they renew the ip from the new DHCP server without error and delay?
Thank for your help

Network Icon Speed differs from what I set to
Hello:
Using windows 2000 server, SP4.
If I change the property "Speed & Duplex" under 'Configure, Advanced'
to 10mb full/half, 100mb full/half and
then restart my computer. When I hold the mouse over the network icon
in the system tray the
speed ALWAYS says 1.0 Gbps.
How do I know if the change in speed/duplex is taking effect.

LAN 2 Computer workgroup trouble
Both computers run Win2KproSP4 with latest updates and have been working
fine until now..
Desktop name "Mpc545" and Laptop name "GX3" are connected through a
Netgear Switch to a cable modem and then on to the Internet, which works
fine on the Internet with either or both..
(Mpc545) My Network Places> Computers Near Me>
"(X) Workgroup is not accessible"
"The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available"
However a Search> finds GX3 in location Workgroup and all files are
accessible from Mpc545.
(GX3) My Network Places> Computers Near Me>
Icons GX3 and Mpc545 show up o.k...
Click on Mpc545>
"(X) \\Mpc545 is not accessible"
"The network path was not found"
A Search> finds Mpc545 in location Workgroup, but click on Mpc545>
"Mpc545 is not accessible"
"The network path wasn't found"
I recently Installed "RegCure" on the GX3 Laptop, which may have caused
this problem???? Tag: favorites Tag: 233537
Registry Value for Network Adaptors
I have windows 2000 pro and I installed a Belkin Wireless N Notebook Card on
my PC. The problem is that the networking utility that was installed with
the card is not showing any available connections in it...even though the
card is connecting as it should. This problem first started with my old
wireless G notebook card..this is why I bought the N. It appears to be a
problem with the computer, not the networking utility.
I noticed in the registry under network adaptors
({4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}), it is not installing a new registry
key for the wireless N card. I'm assuming it should be. Can anyone tell me
why this might be? Thanks

Major problem with hostname resolution in Win2K
Hi,
I'm having a terrifically difficult time getting the hostname of my
win2k
computer to resolve to the correct, external IP address (as opposed to
127.0.0.1). I think it's a Win2K problem,
Here's the issue: I'm using java to display the network interfaces and
their names on two identical Dell Latitude D800 Win2K systems. The
(undesired) result I'm getting on one system is as follows:
Interface: MS TCP Loopback Interface
Canonical Name: Chris <---- computer name
hostAddress: 127.0.0.1
Interface Broadcomm NeXtrem Gigabit Ehternet Driver
Canonical Name: 192.168.12.20
hostAddress: 192.168.12.20
On another system called "Rock", I get the desired result, with the
exact same code:
Interface: MS TCP Loopback Interface
Canonical Name: 127.0.0.1
hostAddress: 127.0.0.1
Interface Broadcomm NeXtrem Gigabit Ehternet Driver
Canonical Name: Rock <---- computer name
hostAddress: 192.168.12.40
Anyone know what could cause this behavior? I've tried just about
everything. I think I'm going to have recode around this nasty bug.
That means I'll have to modify some complicated, inherited spaghetti
code, instead of a hoped for tweak.
I've tried a bunch of things already (modifying hosts, lhmhosts,
disabling dns lookup service, ipconfig /dnsflush /registerdns,
enabling LMHOST lookup, changing the system name, searching through
the registry for computer name and 127.0.0.1). As far as I can tell,
all the relevant settings between the two systems are identical.
Any help would be vastly appreciated!
ps: java code used to display this output:
import java.net.*;
import java.util.*;
public class GetPublicHostName {
public static void main (String args[]) throws Throwable{
System.out.println("abc");
NetworkInterface iface = null;
for (Enumeration ifaces =
NetworkInterface.getNetworkInterfaces();
ifaces.hasMoreElements();){
System.out.println("efg");
iface =
(NetworkInterface)ifaces.nextElement();
System.out.println("xInterface:" +
iface.getDisplayName());
InetAddress ia = null;
for (Enumeration ips =
iface.getInetAddresses();
ips.hasMoreElements();){
ia = (InetAddress)ips.nextElement();
System.out.println(ia.getCanonicalHostName() + " " +
ia.getHostAddress());
}
}
}

Internet Connection Problems
Hello,
I'm building a mini/small data center or server network to study & practice
network/system administration practices. I have a 3Com OfficeConnect Router
(3CR860-95) & a 3Com OfficeConnect Switch (3C16792/16-port). I have 1 Dell
C600 (Windows NT SP5), 1 HP Compaq nc6000 (Windows XP SP2), 1 Dell Precision
610 (Red Hat 8), 2 Dell PowerEdge 2400 w/2 NICs (Windows 2000 Professional)
1 Dell PowerEdge 2400 w/2 NICs (Mandrake 2007), 1 Compaq 5500 (Windows 2000
Server). Every component gets connectivity, but every 3-5 days I am not able
to connect to the Internet, or when I login in the morning, I have to wait
up to 2 hours to get connectivity.
Can someone tell me what is wrong???
Thank you,

Software for Groups n User List
Hi!
I have a lot of users and groups in my Windows 2003 Domain. The groups list
keeps building up.
Is there any software which when run will generate data of No.of Groups and
the No.of Users in each Group??
Its quite tedious to double click each group and manually take note of
users.
Pl suggest.
Thanks a lot
