    - unknown RAS leases in DHCP server sorry for the crosspost in the RAS/routing group, but since i don't have any reply there i'm trying here at the networking group ... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- hello all, I do not use RRAS in my network, but i have a very strange problem: my dhcp scopes suddenly are full of leases with "unique id" identified as RAS. in fact i can see, all of my dhcp clients have 2 leases, one working active (ping ok)and the one identified as RAS (some seconds older and not in use). it's amazing i even have leases for machines with FIXED ips ! my setup is a win2k sp4 server native domain with 2 domain controllers, one per company site. domain dhcp client computers are winxp pro sp2. i have a 1Gbps cisco switched network with two vlans with 24bits C class subnets. dhcp requests for each subnets are forwarded with ip helper addr. - where does those requests come from ? - why do i have leases for fixed ip machines ? i've tried the "netsh ras ip set addrassign pool" with no success. any help or advice will be very appreciated. thanks in advance for your time.     - Internet Printing Thanks in advance for your help. Even if you just clue me in on what new group I shoul be posting to. I'm useing DDNS from DynDNS.org to give me access via my Linksys router to my Home computer network. Currently in the router I have requests for Port 80 routed to my host where I have Win2000, Personal IS running and all is well I can bring up web pages I create from the internet. I would like to do something similiar to enable me to print to my home laser printer from the internet when I'm on the road. I would think there is a port for similiar routing requests or ?     - WinXP user/password prompt takes more than 1 minute to appear (only I've several laptops (IBM ThinkPads) within the same IP network (all connected to one switch). Some laptops are set up with Windows XP SP2 and the others with Windows 2000 SP4. Connecting from a Windows 2000 laptop to another Windows 2000 laptop: Start - Run... - \\win2k1\c$ - Ok -> I get the user/password prompt within a couple of seconds. Connecting from a Windows 2000 laptop to a Windows XP laptop: Start - Run... - \\winxp1\c$ - Ok -> I get the user/password prompt within a couple of seconds. Connecting from a Windows XP laptop to another Windows XP laptop: Start - Run... - \\winxp1\c$ - Ok -> I get the user/password prompt within a couple of seconds. Connecting from a Windows XP laptop to a Windows 2000 laptop: Start - Run... - \\win2k1\c$ - Ok -> I have to wait for more than 1 minute to get the user/password prompt!!!     - Users can't log in to sharted directory Hi, All, Apologies if this is going over old ground, but this server admin stuff is all new to me! My users are having a problem saving to their individual directories on a shared drive on our W2K server. Windows 2000 server used purely as a file server. c:\ has a shared directory for all user files. The shared directory has full use permissions set. Permissions for the users directories is set as user/Administrator/full control No inherited permissions Workstations are XPPro Each has a user account set as 'limited' on the XP Workstations Each has a 'Y' drive which is the shared directory on the server Users can access only their directory, but can't save anything to it Users with admin rights can access their directory but can't save to it Logged in as admin can access and save to any directory Basically, if you're logged in as 'Administrator' you can do whatever you like, which is as it should be, but logged in as any user other than 'Administrator' whatever your level of control won't allow saving to the shared network drive 'Y' It's got to be something simple and I'm probably having a 'senior' moment but right now it's giving me sleepless nights!     - roaming profile problem I am having a problem with roaming profiles that I was hoping someone here could give me an answer to. I work at a small charter school with 200 students. We have an older Windows 2000 server and about 40 workstations (all with Windows XP Pro) We want to give each student their own login but we want them all to share a roaming profile. I created a default profile that I want to use. However, when I assign more than one login with the UNC path to that profile I get a security error and then it loads a local profile. I shared the folder and set the security rights to everyone and it still doesn't work. I also tried granting the folder with security rights to match the individual login and that doesn't work.     - Server with static routes and two NICS I have a Server that is connected by leased lines ( router SDSL) to other two server in brach offices. the first nic have the address 192.168.0.5 gateway 192.168.0.90, ihave 2 static routes pointing to route -p add IPREMOTESERVER1 mask 255.255.255.255 192.168.0.90 and route -p add IPREMOTESERVER2 mask 255.255.255.255 192.168.0.90. The adsl router to acces internet is the 192.168.0.254 So i need this server to use this gateway to connect to internet (so I can connect remotely for support tasks) I install a secoin NIC I configure un this the IP192.168.0.120 and gateway 192.168.0.254 but I cant connect to internet.     - rdp printer redirection hello, we have a ricoh 2018d printer in our office - this is attached to the network as a stand-alone machine (ie not plugged into the server just into the hub - sorry if my terminology is not quite correct); we have a windows 2003 server running only TS (it is a workgroup computer); our other office has a windows 2000 server... our win2003 server recently had "issues" and the IT people we brought in re-formatted the drive and installed the operating system - setting up TS only. I added the Ricoh to each desktop and our 2003 server as a network printer so the port was like this \\rnp***\aficio2018d we started having problems right away so I re-installed the printer as a local printer with an IP port (is this the same thing as a dot4 port??) so in our office we can print with no problems from our desktops to the printer; we also rdp into the 2003 server (without printer redirection as I installed the printer on the 2003 server as well) and we can print with no problems. When we rdp into our other office (with printer redirection on the client side and it is allowed at the the 2000 server side as well) the printer is not redirected - BUT only for some of our desktops. I figured from what little i undersatnd that it may be because of the port being an IP address - but why would some desktops still work? I ensured that the 2000 server has the same driver that we are using. Anyway, I just tried setting up the printer as a network printer again on my desktop (ie with the \\rnp---\aficio port) and it is redirected !!- I don't want to have two printers set-up on each desktop if I don't have to and I especially don't want the \\rnp printer to start causing problems again - any suggestions or direction will be greatly appreciated!     - How do I stop outgoing NETBIOS Traffic? I have a win2k domain controller running WINS, DNS. The domain only has a few machines as it is a development environment. A few days ago I noticed I had some problems getting any machine to establish any sort of outside connection (HTTP, FTP)...even directly to the linksys router. After investigatin further I noticed the domain controller was broadcasting a tremendous amount of data. If I disconnected the domain controller from the router I got outside connectivity back. I installed a packet sniffer a saw nearly 4 of these per second: netbios-ssn Source: 192.168.1.100 Destination: xxx.xxx.xxx.49 netbios-ssn Source: 192.168.1.100 Destination: xxx.xxx.xxx.50 netbios-ssn Source: 192.168.1.100 Destination: xxx.xxx.xxx.51 netbios-ssn Source: 192.168.1.100 Destination: xxx.xxx.xxx.52 ... The destination is continual and sequential. when I view via netstat -a: TCP MyMachineName:1944 0.0.216.100:netbios-ssn SYN_SENT TCP MyMachineName:1945 0.0.216.101:netbios-ssn SYN_SENT TCP MyMachineName:1946 0.0.216.102:netbios-ssn SYN_SENT TCP MyMachineName:1947 0.0.216.103:netbios-ssn SYN_SENT ... These requests start at 0.0.0.0 and continiue forever. The packets are hitting machines in Seattle, Minnesota, LA, etc...nothing to do with my internal domain. After doing some Googling I found that many reccomended disabling netbios over TCP which I did but still encountered the same activity. What is this? Is this virus activity or normal behaivior...if it's normal behavior I want to disable it because I can't even get to my own router with out disconnecting the "packet pushing" domain controller let alone other resources.     - First hop timeout problem Just upgraded from W2k to XP SP2 IE7 I was troubleshooting a problem with with the Windows time service not syncing with any public internet time server. Whenever I would try to update the time I would get a message telling me an error had occurred. I tried to determine if the server was active by pinging it and it responded OK indicating the the problem probably wasn't a dead server. However, further checking with Tracert indicated the the first hop timed out but all the other hops worked as expected. Turns out this happens on any tracert, not just the time servers. I'm far from being a network expert but this tells me that the reason the time update isn'tworking is because Windows Time isn't able to make connection because of the timeout problem. So, my real problem appears to be this timeout of the first hop...can anyone think of a reason this is happening. I am not experiencing any problems with browsing the internet, sending/receiving mail, or any other issues that I am aware of. Am I totally out in left field?     - sharing files with windows 98se PC I have AT&T DSL and a router connecting both PC's (windows 2000 sp2 and windows 98se) and both have good access to the internet at the same time. So far, so good. I want to share files on both PC's with each other, and I am lost trying to figure out how to do that. I viewed the following microsoft webpage: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/g258717/ but it is ahead of me - I don't have any way of seeing my windows 98se PC on my windows 2000 PC (or vice-verse). When I go to "network and dial-up connectons", under the TOOLS tab, I select "map network drive", but, under "entire network, and also "computers near me", I only see my own windows 2000 PC - my windows 98se PC does not appear. How do I tell windows 2000 that there is another PC (connected via the router), and that it has the same workgroup name ("HOME") as my windwos 2000 PC has and that it uses the same protocols. I don't see any button for "detect a locally connected PC" or something logical like that - how do you let win2k know about it so I can select which drive to map?     - File Sharing Mystery I just did a clean reinstall of Windows 2000, and now, I cannot access shares on another Win2K system. Every time I try, I get the username/password box and each time the username and/or password is not recognized. This happens when using the default share (C$) or an explicit share name assigned to a folder on the other Win2K system. Sharing back to the reinstalled version of Windows from the other machine still works just fine. Usernames and passwords on both systems are identical, and they are both set up on the same WORKGROUP.     - Access Denied Hi, We have 3 Win2000 Server SP4 on the network. 2 Members and 1 DC. I sometime have to fix my collegue computers and want to use resources on the network like shares folders and Internet access. Because the employes PC don't need to be part of the Domain, I connect to servers by typing the server name in the run box like \\servername. Then a logon windows shows up and requires a domain user name. I type in a username and can see and access all available shares on the server. This works fine on member servers but doesn't on the DC? I got the following : \\servername is not accessible....Rights...Please contact.... and then Access Denied. How can I make this work on the DC since I have to access share files? I don't understand why by provinding a username and a password, I manage to connect to member servers but this one won't even let me go further in the connecting process. This DC replaced a another one a while ago and on the olf one, I could access it that way! I took a look at DC and Domain Security policy and can't figured out if there is anything wrong.     - VPN Hey gurus, I have one main office(20 users) and two remote offices(5 users, 10 users). The main office has Small Business Server. All clients are windows XP. Each office has static IP ADSL. Can I do this: each remote office connects via VPN to main office and becomes part of same domain as at main office (eg connect to Exchange, dhcp, browse shares etc) but when remote office users browse web, their web traffic stays off the VPN. We have tried to enable RDP through its LAN interface (which was disabled, but we have now turned on) however it does not work.     - Windows 2000 port filtering/blocking Hi, We have a web server that was previously hosted offsite, but is now on our office connection behind a seperate firewall. It has two nics, one of the WAN and one for the LAN, but the LAN nic was not connected to anything for security reasons. We now have connected the LAN nic temporarily to allow RDP access to the web server from our LAN, but this is not working. We can ping the LAN address of the web server, and the web server can ping our LAN, but for whatever reason, RDP wont work. We have removed and re-installed it, but no difference. I have also tried thrid party utilities for remote control of the system but these wont work either. It seems the web server only allows ping traffic to pass over the lan interface to our network (not even telnet works). It has exchange and is the internet router for this company. They have 8 domain controlers that are site to site vpn's I have checked the binding order on all conrtolers,. I have gone over and over the dns servers on each. I forced Kerberos to use TCP instead of UDP on this controler. Does anyone have any sugustions. Nothing seem to stop this error. My impression is the event viewer should be relatively clean. I asked the Sys Admin to fix these issues. That was weeks ago. Am I overreacting? I'm thinking the network should be without blemish. I've been battling with this for some time now.

I have XP and periodically cease to receive network packets. Now I am on
wireless, but I'm sure it isn't signal strength, or SNR. When the hang
happens, I'm still sending packets, just not receiving them.

My best guess is some sort of driver conflict, but I suppose it could be
many things.

Any clues?
