Win XP Win 2000 networking problem

I'm setting up a home network, so far with only 2 machines connected. I can
see the Win XP Pro machine from the Win 2000 machine, and see the drives and
share files from the Win XP Pro, but from the XP Pro machine, I can't see any
other computers on the network. They can ping each other, but that's all.

I'm going crazy here...

If you can ping each other but browse, it could be the master browser issue.
Try to use browstat to troubleshoot it. Or this search result may help.

Computer BrowserYou may try to use browstat.exe from NT resource kit to
check the master browser status. Or stop computer browser on w2k/xp. ...

I would look at logs from "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config
server", and "net config workstation", from each computer, and diagnose the
problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely (download browstat!):

How do you have your shares setup? What are the permissions? Without the
proper rights you can not access the hard drives of other computers.
