 - Cannot aquire network address on second computer I'm trying to set up a network in my home without having to buy expensive equipment. We currently have a broadband connection with two induvial computers. My plan is to set up a network for these computers so they gain access to the internet via the modem and an 8-port switch. Before I got started, the desktop computer worked fine, then once I hooked up the switch and connected the second computer, I could not get a connection. The switch I have boasts plug-and-play capabilities, but I just am not able to get both of the computers online at the same time. I've tried just about everything I can imagine (i.e. checking cables, connections, reseting the modem, ect.) and all I get is a prompt stating that the conncection is limited.  - IE 7 & Accessing a secure log in page I am using Internet Explorer 7 with Windows XP. I have had no problems prior to this accessing a particular web page. I am still able to get to the main page and a secure log in page, but when I try and enter my name and password nothing at all happens. I contacted the help desk at the company of the webpage and they can't figure out what the problem is. I am able to log in using Moxilla Firefox as my browser, why can't I access it throught Internet Explorer any longer? I much prefer to use IE 7. Hope you can help.  - Can't connect to the internet I have three machines that I use through my Linksys router, two desktops (wired) and one laptop (wireless). One of my desktops (running XP SP2) can suddenly no longer make a connection to the internet or download e-mail in Outlook. It is able to talk to the router and can see the other computers attached to it, but can't make an internet connection. The other two machines are having no problems. Surprisingly, a gnutella-based file sharing application that I have running on the maching still can make a connection and exchange files. I have tried all of the usual fixes...checked cables, replaced cables, rebooted the PC, powered down the router and the cable modem, bypassed the router and wired directly into the modem, even unplugged the ethernet cable going into the PC and plugged it directly into the laptop (internet worked fine on the laptop). We joined the domain then restart. 2. We installed ISA 2006 client, Mcafee Antivirus, Office 2003,... then restart. 3. We went to Microsoft Update site to update windows, after compelete update then restart. 4. We can't use remote desktop any more. How can we fix this problem?  - Reactiontime opening a word document out of word or within explore Dear experts, in our area we use Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003 R2. All components use the latest patches and service packs. There is a network share which is locally mapped using a driveletter. When we try to open a word document (doc-file) by using the command "File - open" out of word, navigating to the document on the shared drive the doc is opened quickly at all times. When the user navigates to the shared drive (using the drive letter) and just left-clicks the document in windows explorer it takes longer than a minute while ms word opens up and loads the document. This happens 5-10 times, then things go a lot faster for a while and then it takes longer again. Any ideas how to solve that problem ? We currently do not have any error reports in eventlog, nor any other phenomens. All the systems are working good, except that one problem. Would appreciate any suggestions for further diagnostics. One computer (FAULTY) is not responding to any ping messages or connection open messages from other machines in the network. I can ping to other machines from that FAULTY. I could open a remote desktop session from FAULTY to other machines in the network. but again I cannot connect to this machine remotely. I checked to confirm that the windows firewall is not running.  - Packet Sniffers? Hi, We are running a Windows network, 2003 Server Domain and Windows XP workstations. I'm having trouble with a printer and a specific application and I feel that if I can see what's getting sent to the printer then I might be able to solve this issue. Or at least get the right vendor, software or printer, to take a closer look at the issue. I've been searching for packet sniffers and there are just so many that I don't know how to choose one.  - Strange problem, I really need help I've been fighting this problem for two weeks, searching for help online, from newsgroups, reading manuals, etc with no luck. So please, if you have any idea what to do, share them. I installed USB based (3G) modem, which lead to the problem. Here are symptoms: - After installing the modem first some socket connections couldn't be established, then it became denser, now only about 1/20 succeeds - It seems random when socket connection succeeds, the variance is from every second to try every 33rd try. - The problem occurs with all means of connection (Ethernet, WLAN, modem) - The problem occurs with all TCP types of connection (Telnet, SSH, HTTP, etc), BUT ICMP works alright all the time - The problem occurs in all networks I've tried -> It looks like TCP packets are sent out because on connection tries the amount of transfered data increases, but received amount stays the same, meaning either that the target never receives the packet or its return packet never reaches my computer - Establishing network connection doesn't give any specific error, e.g. telnet just says 'connection could not be established' - If I use localhost listening socket (e.g. ssh tunnel to http-proxy), the connection doesn't even reach that meaning that not even localhost connections are working, BUT if an external computer tries to use my tunnel to proxy, it works fine, no problem at all - Web browser doesn't return any errors, clicking a link just doesn't do anything (besides on that 20th try or so), which leads me to believe that packets don't even reach gateway. Although routing table looks alright, e.g. with Modem connection the primary gateway points to localhost - Windows firewall is off and I don't have any other firewalls - In Safe-Mode everything works alright, starting XP in 'last good known configuration' doesn't help - Uninstalling the modem doesn't help Thanks in advance any advices you can give.  - Can't connect to internet Hi folks, I am helping a friend with his PC and I connected a Cat 5 cable from my router to his PC. His computer tells me that there is a problem connecting to the internet and it will not connect. This is a Win98SE PC but I have connected this way many times in the past although with an older Netgear Router. The Router I currently use is a Belkin Wireless N router. I can connect other PC's this way (using the cable to one of the router ports) with no problems. This PC, however, will not connect, FireFox times out as does any other access event. I read another post in here and changed from Automatically obtain an address to the IP address and subnet for TCP/IP for a device in my range (eg 192.168.2.4) I also entered the default gateway address manually to my router address. It still does not connect. Is there something in the computer or the router setup causing this? I've disabled the firewall on the PC to no avail. I also used ipconfig /all and it reports the proper IP address and gateway address.  - Mapped Network Drives Problem I have three machines all running XPSP2. The main machine is called Figaro the other two are quality and jfk. I have mapped some of the drives on Figaro to the other two machines and for some reason those mapped drives are no longer accessible. In Explorer they show up as disconnected network drives and when I click on one I get the error message, "An error occured while reconnecting P: to \\FIGARO\C$ Microsoft Windows Network : The network name cannot be found. This connection has not been restored. I disconnected the mapped C Drive from Figaro and I cannot remap it. I get the error message "The network path \\figaro\c$ cannot be found." It doesn't matter if the firewalls (Kaspersky Internet Suite) are on or off. What is truly weird is that I can connect to Figaro from quality using remote desktop. I can ping Figaro from quality and vice versa. If I open "My Network Places" on quality and go to entire Network > Microsoft Windows Network > Workgroup (The name of my workgroup) > it lists all three machines. When I click on Figaro I can see all the printer, Shared Docs, printer and faxes and Scheduled tasks folders. Doing all of the above on the third box, jfk, yields the same results.  - cannot communicate with printer wireless I have installed a Lynksys wireless printer server. Three computers, two laptops with XP Pro and one desktop with XP. All either SP2 or SP3. The wireless server works nicely in that we can print but a dialogue box comes up and says "Printer not responding." Even so, it prints. The problem being that there apparently is not two way communication with the printer across the wireless network and therefore we cannot get the status of the printer, ie ink status.  - Denied Access to Workstation & Shares After Crash I have two workstations running Windows XP Pro connected to each other directly via a crossover cable and networked together as a workgroup. The power went off in the office and the UPS for one of the workstations failed. So it went down hard. Ever since then that workstation will no longer allow the other workstation access to its shares, but the other workstation can be accessed just fine. I can't even access that workstation to look at the shares. When users attempted to access that workstation from the problem free workstation they are denied access and their accounts are locked out on the problem workstation. I have verfied that the usernames and passwords are the same on both workstations. When they attempt logon as the adminstrator they get a logon prompt, but of course are still denied access. Regular users don't get a logon prompt. They only got an error saying they do not have access and/or have been locked out. I checked the local security policies on both machines and they are exactly the same. The windows firewall is not running and the service has been stopped entirely on both workstations. The security logs are not full. I was told by a friend that I should check the registry setting under HKLocalMachine > System > CurrentControlSet > Control > Lsa for the crashonauditfail option to verify that it was not set to a 2. I checked and it was set to 1. I set it to 0 to verify that it was not a problem with that. When the users attempted to logon after that, they were given a logon prompt, but still not allowed access to the computer or its shares. However they were no longer being instatnly locked out on that problem workstation. In the Event Viewer security logs it only stays "Unknown username or bad password" in failed event when that user's attempt to access the computer. Hi, I know that ping failures is a frequent problem, and there is alot of info available on how to troubleshoot this type of problem, but my problem is subtley different from most. I have two computers, (A) is an XP Pro Laptop, (B) is a Windows 2000 Server Desktop. Both have static IP Address, (A) 192.168.1.10 and (B) is 192.168.1.11 Both have subnet masks of 255.255.255.0 (B) and (A) are networked together through a 3Com Hub. These are the only two machines on the network. Quite simple. Anyway, to the problem: 1) (B) cannot ping (A). At all. 2) (A) CAN ping (B), but after a few minutes the ping responses stop with 'request timed out'. There is no firewall running on either machine. I know that is bd practice, but I am trying to solve this intermittent connection problem. So, what could be causing ping packets to be blocked from (B) to (A), and what could cause pings from (A) to (B) to run for a while, before getting 'request timed out'. Any suggestions appreciated.  - I can not connect to the internet I currently have two computers (both windows XP SP2) connected to cable internet through a Netgear WGR614v7 wireless router, which replaced my old one yesterday, but the problem started way before that. It started with a momentary blackout, which left my old router not working, half a week later, we had some really bad weather (125km/h wind) which gave me multiple blackouts, and, like normal, my router started working again, (don't ask me why, it just always seems to do it.) a couple of days later it finally went dead. my problem is this: my second (newer) computer will no longer connect to the internet. now there are some odd occurrence with this, the light on the router shows up, meaning the computer is connected, but the router does not say that the router is connected when you look at attached devices in the settings. also whenever I turn the computer on, it tells me that the network connection has 'limited or no connectivity' due to an nonrenewable IP, and when i look at the values for the connection, it shows up the physical address, it comes up as 169.254.202.29, rather than 192.168.1.3, as it should. i have tried everything i can thing of, tested the Ethernet cable, reinstalled netwwork adapter, new router, tried with different Ethernet cables. but none have succeeded, does anybody have any ideas at all or should i just try re-installing windows?  - XP Firewall - replacing 'netfw.inf' on client machines. A little background. We recently completed a migration to a new network and domain (~1200 clients) and I need to deploy a firewall setting change to all systems to reflect the scope change for some of the allowed applications (for example, SMS Remote). All the clients that existed before the migration have scopes that are no longer valid for the allowed applications. All clients deployed after the migration are using a different image so their scopes are set correctly. Can anyone recommend the best route to remedy this? I don't believe Group Policy is the right way as we are not looking to introduce new exceptions but rather edit the existing ones on the older clients. I was thinking that replacing the "netfw.inf" (with the desired settings) and running "netsh firewall reset" would be the best route. After some thought though, I am concerned as to what would happen to the exceptions that existed on some clients that may not be included in the updated "netfw.inf" (ie: applications that the users themselves have installed.
