    - Internet access in a LAN We are using a LAN of 45 Computers. Most using Windows XP as OS and few Windows 2000. and we have a Broad Band Internet Connection in a Host Computer (Windows XP). And all other computers in this LAN now accessing internet.     - Timing out a client side deviceless connection Can anyone tell me if there is a way to time out a deviceless connection on the client side? I understand that the server side will timeout after a default of 15 minutes, but this does not help me. I don't need the deviceless connection to persist during the users logon session on the client side. I need it to timeout to force the user to authenticate again, because the next connection could possibly be a different user. The PC is a domain member and is auto-logged on to a local generic account on the PC and not to a domain account. This is necessary because this is a multi-user PC for our hospitals surgery department with one single LOB application loaded that connects back to the server with it's own user management. This application is used to chart surgical cases that may last longer than the nurses shift, so someone else comes in and continues charting the case. The software is on the PC (instead of a terminal server session) because if for some reason the PC losses connection to the server, the case charting software continues charting in local cached mode and will upload the information when the server becomes available again, thus the charting software must always be available during the case. But there are times where the user needs to connect to domain resources. So, our IT surgical support person has placed shorcuts to the necessary resources on the "All Users" desktop of the 11 operating room PC's that we have (as opposed to creating the shortcuts on each of the 70 support staffs desktops in their profiles and any new users that come along) What I need to happen is an authentication request to take place each time the resource is opened up. This happens with the first connection attempt because the account performing the connection is not a domain member and an authentication request takes place. The user will login with his own username and password which provides us with accountability (instead of the PC being logged on with a generic domain account with access to the resources). But once the user closes the resource, subsequent connection attempts occur under the last successfully authenticated user, even though their shift may have ended hours ago and the PC's logon session is still ongoing for another person who has come along to continue charting the surgical case. If you go to disconnect network drives, you see a deviceless connection that you can disconnect and this will force an authentication the next time the resource is accessed. How can I have this connection either locally disconnect after a length of time (as opposed to the server disconnecting after the default 15 minutes and still leaving the deviceless connection on the client side), or prevent the logon credentials from being cached (via the client side deviceless connection) for that connection so when the resource is closed, new connections must authenticate again?     - response time (for failure) is slow when accessing share and computer if I double click a network share e.g. "My Network Places" dirblah on GREYCOMP and GREYCOMP is off. It takes ages to realise it.. The window even crashes with a "not responding".. (same if I have a mapped drive to the network share and double click that) And if I double click it again, it does the same s-l-o-w- response again, not just a slow response, but windows looks unhealthy at the time. I can't click .any icon within the "My Network Places" after I have clicked a share where the remote computer where the share is, is off. (it is acting as if there is great cpu or ram utilization, though I don't think there is, but it's not a nice symptom). Is there a way to make it timeout quicker ?     - Problem to create a home network Hi My system consists of 3 PC's, 1 desktop and 2 laptops. All connected to a Netgear RangeMax Next router DG83N. The Laptops wireless and the desktop with cable. All machines run Windows XP SP3. I think it all worked fine before I updated to SP3. Problem: The Laptops communicate with each other but the desktop is not seen anywhere. Printer and scanner are conncted to the desktop. All units connect to the internet independently. I have run the guide several times and checked all settings but I cannot get it work. Would be grateful if someone could help me with this problem.     - ICS: Everything works except sending mails I'm at a friend who uses WLAN to connect his Windows XP SP 2 (Home) laptop to the Internet. I've setup Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on his laptop and connected my Windows XP SP 2 (Pro) laptop with an Ethernet cable. I can use various Internet services successfully except one: If I want to send a mail in Outlook the program tells me that no connection could be established with the mail server. I know it's wrong as I can receive mails from the mail server successfully. As I've a few accounts in Outlook I also know that this problem is not related to one mail server. In fact I can't send any mail currently at all (no matter what account and mail server I try to use). I've setup ICS a couple of times before successfully. If there was a problem the Internet connection normally just didn't work at all. It's the first time that I see all Internet services working and accessible except one. Any ideas what could cause the problem? I tried already to switch off an anti-virus program on my friend's laptop and even shutdown my own anti-virus program but it didn't help so far.     - Ethernet over USB Hello, I am working on a project where I want to connect my Windows desktop to a Linux embedded computer I am working with using ethernet over USB. For example, I want both computers to be able to ping each other from the command line over the USB cable (I can currently do this with the ethernet cable I have connecting them). I have heard that Windows has some native support for ethernet over USB, but I don't know more than that (i.e. what drivers to use, how to set them up, etc.).     - repair to get rid of a network Guys, I need to get rid of a network because my computer is a total mess ever since I connected my PC to my notebook. As I found out deleting a network is not possible so my thought was repairing XP. The question is: will that solve the problem or will the network still be there?     - Internet connection times out System running XP sp3. Internet is DSL. Everytime my friend connects to the internet it is fine for 10-15 mins and then just stops saying that the connection has timed out. If you restart the computer it does the same again. Both connections tried work fine on all other computers. I tried his computer at my house and still had the same problem. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the network adaptor drivers, uninstalling and re-installing Internet explorer and firefox, setting up a new connection, i have also tried installing a different network card. I am now at a loss as to what to check next. The last time this happened i was downloading an updated driver for his netwrok adaptor and, although the internet would not work, the download continued. I shared the data from the old computer and the new computer found the old in Network Neighborhood, I then simply copied the files to the new. The data consists of numerous files housed in several folders. To do a very very lazy and basic integrity check, I compared the folder sizes from the old and new machine. Since they house the same files, the same folders, they should be identical right? Now I'm in a bit of a dilemma. I noticed discrepancies, bytes that are unaccounted for. The differences seem arbitrary, on one folder there are 199 less bytes, in another there are 1,304,200 more bytes. The number of files and folders are identical for every folder transferred. What could cause a loss or gain of bytes after transfer without loss of files or folders? 1. The first time I noticed a discrepancy on the first folder I transferred, I changed some attributes of the original folder, deleted the one that made it through and transferred again. The folder came out identical in both "Size" and "Size on Disk". I do not know why this occurred. 2. Since then every folder to come out on the other side has a discrepancy either in the "Size" or "Size on Disk" values. 3. I removed the internet cable from the router to remove possible internet problems from the equation during transfer. The only parties to the transfer were the two computers and the router. 4. I've tried transferring a single folder over and over to see if random discrepancies occur in size to show some kind of corruption is occurring through travel. The result? Only a static discrepancy (if the folder made it through first time with 199 bytes less, every subsequent transfer of same folder yields same result). 5. The total size, roughly more than fifty gigabytes transferred. Does anyone have any idea what could be going on here? 1. Could data have been corrupted through travel? 2.     - Wireless adapter IP address with no network Can anyone guide me to some type of slution? I am working on setting up a 802.11N network in Windows XP pro. I am trying to use USB adpaters (D-Link and Linksys) for the PC and I am connecting to a 11n router (D-Link.)     - Windows can't configure wireless connection My Dell laptop with XP Home loses the setting for Windows to connect wireless. I have to reset each time by doing "run" , "services.msc", then click on "Start" under Configure Zero Wireless Connection. The problem may in that window, "Apply" is dimmed so I can only click OK.     - XP Can't Connect to Network I've got two machines, one with VistaSP1 and one with a brand new install of XPSP3. They both run over wire to a D-Link 4-port router and then into my Comcast cable modem. Vista machine can connect to the Internet without a problem, but as far as I can tell, XP machine can't connect to or even ping the router. Strange thing was, the XP machine used to have Vista insalled on it and it worked flawlessly. Only after repartitioning the HDD and dropping XP onto it does it no longer work.     - Problem with Network Places Laptop XP Pro networked with PC XP Home via wireless router and Ethernet. If I click Network Places on the laptop and there is some fault that prevents it getting to the PC (e.g., router or PC off), the Network Places window freezes up. If aborted in Task manager the contents of the desktop all disappear including Start button and task bar. Any programs with visible windows still work but nothing else can be accessed. Explorer can be restarted using Task manager but why should this be necessary? Is there some setting somewhere that will cause Network Places to time out if it cannot get to the remote places? It seems a particularly stupid piece of design if it doesn't even do a ping first. I know I could do a ping first but why should *I* need to!? (BTW it doesn't seem to happen with the PC XP Home.)     - Win XP Pro SP1. Cannot create new connection. Hi, I have reinstalled Win XP Pro onto an existing PC. It should be a clean install, because I did a full disk re-format as part of the installation. It has installed SP1. The installation is OK, except I cannot connect to the LAN. There is a 1394 Connection which is "enabled" and "connected". However I cannot create a new LAN connection. I follow the "Create a New Connection" wizard, all looks fine, but when I reboot (as requested) there is no new connection. Other Windows & Linux machines on the same LAN work fine, using either DHCP or fixed IP address. I tested the PC itself by booting Linux from a CD - the LAN connection works fine therefore the hardware is all OK. The account I am using is an admin, with no password.     - network disconnected automatically - how to change the setting? I use remote desktop a lot. But recently, not sure if it is due to a recent windows xp update, the network of my romote computer got disconnected automatically after a few hours if not used. I had to call people in my office to move the mouse or keyboard a little bit so that the network can be activated and reconnected. Did anyone get the same problem?     - How to connect to computer-to-computer network? Hi, I was away from home and tried to piggyback on someone elses wireless connection. I found two "Unsecured computer-to-computer networks". One was even named "Free Public WiFi". Signal strength to both was good (4 bars and 3 bars). When I tried to connect, Windows took a long time and then said I was Disconnected. However, in the text it said I WAS connected. In actual fact I was NOT. What's the deal with these computer-to-computer networks? How do you connect? One strange thing is that when I got back home those two networks still show up! I've tried refreshing the network list but can't get rid of them.     - Dumb Blond needs Network Advice Hi everybody, I'm ready to try networking. Here's what I've got: 1. Comcast cable using their Motorola Surfboard SB5101 cable modem. 2. Desktop PC built in 2000 with some upgrading; cable from PC attaches to the Motorola cable modem. NO wireless card on this computer. OS = Win XP Home 3. Vaio laptop w/wireless card (.11b). OS = Win XP Home 4. Toshiba laptop w/wireless card (at least .11b) OS = Win XP Media Center 2005 5. Inkjet printer w/parallel & USB ports, currently connected to desktop via parallel 6. Samsung laser printer w/USB and wireless ability 7. Scannner w/USB 8. External HD for storage Idea: Combine Cable Modem & Wireless into one peripheral -- I'm looking at the Motorola Surfboard SBG900. One review said it was not intuitive to set up the wireless and the security. I know nothing about these things, so will need guidance. Question: Are there other cable modem/wireless router combo peripherals on the market? I've googled and haven't found any, or else don't know the right lingo. My goals: * maintain HIGH security. I do some paralegal work and do not want anybody else to pick up my files. Clients deserve confidentiality * transfer files between the three computers via wireless or ethernet. * print to the laser printer from any computer * use the laptops in the living room or on the porch (25 feet) and be able to print and transfer files via wireless * not have any of the devices conflict with each other or with the telephone. * most data is text files and graphics (up to 25 megs), plus web and email. No games, TV, DVDs. I'd like suggestions on what kind of cable modems/wireless routers to get. An all-in-one would be nice. Simple setup is important. Simple configuration is important.     - Trouble with shared folders Hello, Got a network with 3 computers all running XP Home edition, SP3. Lets name them A, B, C. A is directly connected to the internet through a wireless ADSL router, B and C connect wirelessly as clients to the wireless router. Gateway is 192.168.1.1. A has fixed IP 192.168.1.2, B fixed 192.168.1.3 and C 192.168.1.11, all same subnet mask and all part of the same workgroup. I have shared forlders in all PCs and what happens is the following. From A I can see the shares of A, B, C. From B I can see the shares of A and C. But from C, I can only see the shares of C, nothing else. They are not appearing in network places, they dont even appear when I explore entire network, under workgroup name. Only C is found there. I can ping from all computers, all IPs and I get no errors whatsoever. C in particular, can ping A and B. I am using a remote desktop control software in all 3 computers and it works perfectly, with the local network IPs. Any idea of what can be causing the problem at C or even maybe at A and B not "broadcasting" the shared folders?     - Switch easily between DHCP and Fixed IP on Notebook I use wireless at home and when travelling on my notebook. For some reason AT&T insist on having fixed IP addresses at home and on the road it's all dynamic of course.     - XP Pro and Home won't allow access I have windows XP Pro on one computer (call it "A") and XP Home on another computer (call it "B"). they are connected together via a linksys router (ethernet cables). both computers have all of their drive letters set up for file sharing (including allowing to change files on the network). When I click under "my network places" on each computer, both computers show up. And under A's "my network places" where it lists the "B" computer, I can access B's drives via the A computer. However, on the B computer under my network places, when i try to access the drives on the A computer (in fact just double clicking on the name of A computer) gives the error "[computer name] is not accessible. You might not have persission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission. The network path was not found." But all of the drives on A computer are set up for file sharing with permission to change files.     - Wireless no longer working on after Windows automatic update While the wired connection works fine, My wireless connection seems to have stopped working after the automatic windows update yesterday. I have a Toshiba Satelite A105 laptop, with Windows XP Home Edition SP2. The list of wireless networks comes up fine, but when I try to connect to my wireless network it's not working. It just says "waiting for network", then it refreshes the wireless list and does nothing. While it says it's waiting, the little wireless symbol in the system tray does nothing however, it just stays there with the X on it. Any ideas how I can troubleshoot this problem?     - Another "VPN Sign-on Keeps Popping Up" I have a VPN connection that I use intermittently, and it has started trying to connect every time I change webpages. It has "Never dial a connection" checked.     - NET WORK PROBLEM SHARING PRINTER I presently have two computers , one with windwos xp home ,the other with windows xp professional. I run my internet to both of them using a router. I want to share a printer between thwe two. I tried using network wizard to set a network between the two computers. set everything up as requested. Using the same workgroup.when running the one with xp pro the program seemed to work but when I ran the network wizard and the xp home computer it stopped and gave an error and cannot complete setup. I turned the printer on to share but when I go back to ad printers and check the printer showed as not shared and cannot chane it to share.     - IE cannot show my updated program! Does anyone have any suggestions on how to solve following problem? I am running a tomcat program with database, and using IE as an interface.     - Apps cannot access internet On my laptop, wireless connection, none of my applications can access the internet. I do not recall making any changes to any settings that could have made this occur. I've tried both IE and FF and triple checked the proxy settings. iTunes, other applications also cannot access. The wireless connection indicates signal good and connected. I disabled Zone Alarm and rebooted with the same results. Also ran the MSFT TCP/IP stack reset tool to no avail.     - XP Pro to XP Home wireless network I have two laptops at home, mine running XP Home edition and one from work running XP Professional, which is on the network at work through a VPN (once I log in). Both are connected to my cable modem by a wireless router, connecting wirelessly without problems. What I want to do seems simple: I want to operate one computer from the other, that is, I'm at the work laptop all the time and have it connected to my extermal mointor and so on, and I'd like to be able to access the home laptop from the work laptop. I've tried networking and nothing works, after following step by step instructions to install an app from Microsoft called "network setup" it told me it can't because the work machine is "on a domain". I've tried various other things and the closest I've gotten is logging into the one computer from the other over the Internet (Citrix remote pc) but it's slow and not what I need. Any advice welcome.     - Had two of the same IP's, how do I clear the damage? Hi All, I set up an OpenVPN tunnel between two sites. I goofed and had the same IP address (192.168.255.100) on each end. I have corrected the problem. Problem: every machine on the network works fine with the new IP addresses (192.168.255.100-local, & 101-remote), except the original machine (192.168.255.50) I was doing the testing on. It can not see the 192.168.255.101 at the remote location. (Everyone else can, but not .50) Is it possible that its routing tables are messed up? How do I do a mass clear and start over?     - Belkin Wireless Router Trouble I have a Belkin Wireless Router that I use to wirelessly hook in to m home network, while I'm wired to my Xbox 360 in the other room. I hav absolutely no trouble connecting immediately, and I get great speed, bu it constantly looks for a certificate to log me on, and never finds it and it will from time to time, pop up a message telling me that window was unable to find a certificate to log me on to the server. It's jus driving me nuts that it won't just connect already.     - Problem sharing external (USB) drive with XP Pro I have a home LAN consisting of an XP nPro (XPP) desktop, an XP Home (XPH) desktop, a Vista wireless laptop and an Ubuntu wireless desktop. XPP and XPH have external USB drives in addition to their internal ones. I have set up sharing using the article by Ron Lowe and Steve Winograd at <http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_filesharing/whole.htm>, but while the XPP external drive is visible from the other computers, it is not accessible. Simple file sharing is off at XPP and the Guest account is disabled. Each machine has an account with the same username. I've gone through the Lowe/Winograd article and I'm pretty sure I've done everything they say, but I still get that "you don't have permission..." error message.     - Lose control of ICS connection from client - only reboot gets it b I have a desktop running XP SP2 whose internet connection I share. I specified that clients could control that connection. That way lazy old me can sit at my laptop (XP and SP3) and dial out. It works just fine - most of the time. Sometimes, generally after having my laptop come out of standby or hibernate, I can no longer control the connection. Network Connections does not even show the connection (which it normally does). One really bizarre aspect is that if my better half has already started the connection on the desktop, I can still get out to the internet from my laptop, even though I cannot see it in Network Connections, and it does not show up on the task bar, either. So far, the only way I can get control and visibility back is to reboot the laptop. I don't have to reboot the desktop that has the connection that is being shared. Obviously, I would rather not have to do that. Is there some other way I can kick-start the access to the ICS? By the way, even though the laptop now has SP3, this happened under SP2 as well. The network connection between the laptop and the desktop is a Linksys wireless router, if that matters. I have tried rebooting said router to see if that fixes the problem, but it does not. Thanks.     - can't reach network printers i have 2 different xp pro pc's on 2 different networks that can't ping the network attached printers on those networks. other workstations can ping the printers and these 2 workstations without a problem. these 2 workstations can ping other workstations on the network without a problem. i have the firewalls disabled on both pc's and the norton firewall is disabled on both pc's. both have that latest updates installed. there's nothing in the printer setup that can block a particular ip. the printers are from ricoh/savin, toshiba and hp. any ideas? thanks in advance -- a few miles from nowhere...     - mapped srives "fail" I experience this problem at 2 dififerent sites now. It is as though mapped drives take long to "activate" after startup. The apps make use of mapped drives to common data on the server. On restart of a pc and then opening of the app we get errors relatinf to not finding server data. If we close the app and go into explorer, then we can view the contents of the mapped drives. Then we restart the app and it "connects" to the data and runs fine, till we restart a pc.     - Network Shares via VPN OK one way, rejected the other way Hi There, I am hoping that someone can help me with this, as i have no more hair left to tear out. Allow me to explain. We have two sites linked via a vpn tunnel, two different domains, one site in the UK and one site in Ireland. Both sites can ping each others routers and main servers. RDP works either way The problem arises when trying to open a network share located in the Ireland site. For example, sitting on a machine in the uk, open a run command and enter \\192.168.16.2 - after about 30 seconds to a minute i get a error â?? The network path was not found. If i enter a hidden share ie \\192.168.16.2\c$ after about 30 seconds a password authentication request box appears asking for credentials. I enter the domain administrator user name and password (which i know are correct as i have performed a rdp to the same machine) and wait â?? after about 30 seconds, the authentication requestor is back again. I have also tried various combinations of the username ie administrator@mydomain.com mydomain\administrator â?? etc All result in a brief pause then the requestor is back. Now going from the other direction is a different matter â?? if i RDP onto the server in Ireland, then open the Run command and put in a ip for a server in the uk â?? i get another password authentication request, i enter administrator and its domain password, after a brief moment, i am presented with the shares on that server.     - Mystery downloads I use a wireless broadband connection to the internet with a 3GB monthly limit (uploads + downloads). Yesterday my systems apparently downloaded 900+ MB and I have no idea what application or website did that to me. I'd be very concerned about malware if this traffic were upload traffic, but since it's download, I feel it's probably some poorly designed web site I was connected to for a while -- is that a reasonable assumption? In any case, I would really like to find a utility that would log, for each IP address I connect to, the upload and download volumes. Can anyone point me to a reliable program that will do that?     - network access to shares always try to authenticate but fails I have 3 PCs running XP Pro on a pear-to-pear network. On one of them I cannot access the shares. I can see them but if I click (using Win Explorer) I get asked for a password. If I use Simple File Sharing it ask for a pasword for the guest account - although there definately is none (I have verifie this with "net user guest"). If I use Classis File Sharing and assign rights to a known user, the password fails. It just keeps taking me back to the login dialogue box.     - Offline folders I have 2 destop pc's and a laptop, that I keep for business, and on a PC I have a shared folder for service manuals, time sheets, ect... Until Saturday all 3 had XP Pro SP2, and PC's AM2, XP64, and Laptop C640 had all access behind a Router/firewall with Shared folders, and offline folders that sync'd to/from my laptop. On Friday, I upgraded the AM2 to a new MB, CPU, and ram, and then did an inplace upgrade to the OS, to get the new hardware recognized and drivers loaded. Since all three are all on the same workgroup, I renamed the shares to a more logical naming so that first the PC name, followed by the drive letter, then the shared name. NOW. I have updated the AM2 to XP SP3, the XP64 also, and wanted to do the laptop also, but wanted to sync the folders first, but I needed to rename the shared offline folders to reflect the new names, but from the sp2 laptop, the newly renamed folders on AM2 don't show up in network neighborhood. Summary: Laptop c640 XPSP2 sees and accesses XP64 XPsp3 and all shared drives/folders in Network neighborhood both ways. PC AM2 XPsp3 sees and accesses XP64 XPsp3 and all shared drives/folders in Network neighborhood both ways. PC AM2 XPsp3 sees and accesses Laptop c640 XPSP2 and all shared drives/folders in Network neighborhood both ways. BUT Laptop c640 XPSP2 can only see PC AM2 XPsp3 and 1 OLD sharename but nothing else. The limited user can only get on the internet if an admin logs in first then switches users. The admin accounts can get on the internet anytime. may help.
