    - Very odd web connectivity behavior I have Verizon FIOS. If I go to Speedtest I get numbers that reflect the performance I am paying for, 15 up, 2 down. The problem is with Web behavior and it doesn't seem to matter if I'm using IE or Firefox. I click on a link and the status just goes to "done", nothing happens. I can click it quite a few times before it actually goes to the page, then it loads fast. This occurs all the time on any number of sites. Or it will give me an error page, but it will connect upon refresh. I have the Actiontech modem/wireless router from Verizon. The support they offer is useless, when they can be contacted. This has gone on for weeks now, and before I just tell them to come pull everything out I want to hear other ideas. I have run Spybot and Adaware as well as AVG. The system is clean.     - Internet Explorer Cannot Display the Webpage.... HELP!! I am running Windows XP Professional SP2 with all available updates. I am not able to connect to the web and recieve the message "Internet Explorer Cannot Display the Webpage". I have disabled the Firewall and have disabled the Antivirus Program. I have ran Ad-Aware 2007 and have ran WinsockXPFix, ISPFIX, LSPFix, RegCure and they have corrected found problems with out correcting the connection problem. I can see my Local Network but not the WAN through IE. I have even tried reinstalling IE7 and Windows XP Pro (over itself) and yet I still can not see the web. I have the same problem if I connect via Wireless, Wired, or Broadband Cellular. My OS when booted states that there is Updates to be installed but will not download them or install them due to no connectivity. Even when I try to access the MS Update Site it will not display the webpage. The only updates that I have not installed is the .NET Framework 2.0 Update and the 3.0 Update. I have searched the forum for assistance and have tried everything that has been suggested in previous forums without success. I am just about ready to REFORMAT and RE-Install the OS to see if that works. I am able to get online with other computers (both Wired and Wireless) over the same network but not on my DELL Inspiron 5100 Laptop that is having the issues.     - Web page with lots of information causes network to fail Web page with lots of information causes network to fail ... When I go to a web page with a lot of information, then my network fails .. basically, the network activity stalls, the web page does not fully load and my network drives fail ... the best way to resolve is for me to manually go and disable the network connection and enable again (which is frustrating). Any ideas what could be causing this? I browse the exact same web pages on other computers and they work perfectly fine. One other issues that might be related ... when I use Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection ... the connection also fails on the same web pages ... but interestingly it also fails when I view email (in Outlook) that are HTML and have a lot of content/pictures in them.     - ---Causes of network slow responsiveness? Hello. Lately, my browser (Firefox) is driving me batty. When I click on a link, the progress bar at the bottom right sits there, white, for 10-15 seconds before anythign happens. Then the progress bar zips across and I go to the linked page. I used to have snappy performance, not this hesitation. Where would I look for solutions? Is it a problem with the servers at this university? Is it a problem in my computer (not enought RAM - 2 gigs no other apps running), is the whole internet like this now? Any pointers to get me started back to sanity would be so much appreciated!     - Firewall problem when sharing internet connection Both computers have all updates installed (incl SP2). Computer1 has XP professinal. Computer2 has XP home. I have home network set manually cos those wizards didnt work. Everything works on home network. Like file and printer sharing. Computer1 ip is 192.168.0.1 (homenet work nic). Nic having internet connection geting ip from dhcp. Computer2 ip is 192.169.0.2 Comp1 internet connection works fine. Firewall only on nic connected to internet. Home network nic dont have firewall. Comp2 trying to access internet thru Comp1. No firewall at all. IF i disable firewall on Comp1, Comp2 can access websites fine. Everything seems to work. But if i have firewall ON on Comp1, only site what seems to work is Google...Yes, Google works, rest dont. Tried sites like MS, CNN and so on. Pinging sites works.     - Cannot access other computers on workgroup @ home I have a 2 desktops and a laptop together on a home network (MSHOME). Recently all of a sudden I found that my desktop either cannot get to the network cannot access the other machine. Not sure what happened or how to repair. Selecting the workgroup, it says I don't have permission. Don't know where to go from here. I have tried changing network cards and drivers, made sure all windows is up to date.     - Can't Share Folders I'm having a very odd problem. First of all, I have a network between three computers all running XP Pro, and they've always worked, I just set the same workgroup for all of them and I'm good, I've never had to create the same accounts on all computers or whatever that entails. It's always pretty much just been plug and play. Anyways, I just reformatted my computer and the first thing I did was share my printer, that worked flawlessly, and it has been working. I joined the same workgroup of course (HOME, not MSHOME) and I could see the other two computers and read the shared files and folders and what not. However, when I then decided to share a folder of my own (Something which I always used to do), none of the other two computers could access it. They could see my computer in the workgroup but they would get an 'access denied' error. I read about the 'restrictanonymous' registry key which seems to work for many and I applied it but after restarting it always resets back to 1, the other two computers have it at 0. Keep in mind that everything is perfect other than the fact that no one else can access my shared folders, but I can access their's. I've even created accounts named after the other computer's usernames (Something which I've never had to do) and that didn't work either. At first I thought it was zonealarm but I uninstalled it and the problem persists, could it be that it left something behind? Should I reinstall the file and printer sharing component? Sorry for being vague, it's pretty late and I'm going insane over this problem. Please ask me any questions you would need to help me out, as I would really appreciate some help.     - XP Pro machine will not stay connected to network for more than 30 I have a computer that was running normally for several years. Suddenly, it started off the network after about 30 mins after boot. It couldn't see other machines and they couldnt see it. Rebooting solves the problem for another 30 mins or so. I put a second PCI network card in the machine and connected to that - and the problem remained, so it is not the hardware. I replaced the network switches. I ran SPYBOT S&D and several WINSOCK repair utilities. Event log showed another computer on the net trying to become a browser master. I shut that machine off. None of the other machines on my network (6) have this problem. The only possible clue I have is that I'm getting an WARNING (in event log) that I'm exceeding the maximum number of connection attempts. NETSCAN shows 7 devices connected - but XP allows 10, right?     - Laptop on two different networks I have a network set up with wireless router, XP home networking, file sharing, printer sharing, internet access, etc. Desktop and laptop with XP on that network. Works well. I want to set up a similar network at another location, different desktop, router, ISP, etc., but be able to use the laptop on this network as well as the home network. Will that work? How do I set up the laptop with respect to the home network settings for both networks? Also, if another laptop computer is to be added to one of the networks, and that laptop has Vista, will that work? Need to change anything about the network itself?     - All my folders are Read-only! All of my folders show Read-only in the Property->General check box. If I clear this, a dialog (Applying Attributes) shows all the sub-folders being cleared, but when i reopen it, it's back to Read-only again! I have a peer-to-peer wireless network with a Linksys router. Both PCs (under XP SP2 or its tablet equiv.) behave the same way.     - Network Bridge I previously had a setup where my dlink wireless card bridged with my lan card, and the network was extended to my 360. That card suspiciously broke, and now I am left with a belkin F5d8010 pre- N wireless PCMCIA wireless adapter in my laptop. Whenever I try to bridge the 2 connections, the internet says it is connected and the bridge says it is connected, but the internet is actually disconnected.     - Looking to disable AD HOC option Hello and good day. I have several laptops for my organization that I need to set ad hoc on wireless connection properties to never be an option, ie disabled, greyed out etc. The Laptops are windows xp SP2. We are not using Active Directory, instead samba on our network. I was able to get GPMC.msc installed, however I am unable to use the group policy object editor to setup a wireless policy without Active Directory. I have foud through gpedit.msc the following snap in;" Local Computer Policy/User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Componets /Microsoft Management Console/Restricted/Permitted snap-ins/Group Policy/Group Policy snap-in extensions/Wireless Networ (IEEE 802.11) Policies. I have enabled it but am unable to set a policy using it. Does anyone know a work around to set local policy for xp not using Active Directory.     - Security Alert - then floods of empty IE6 windows I'm getting some very bizarre behaviour here. I'm in a program called Magix Movie Edit Pro - although I don't think that's necessarily going to prove central to the issue. I click a button that's supposed to take me to an online site for downloading video resources. A window appears titled 'Security Alert'. Its message is: "You are about to leave a secure Internet connection. It will be possible for others to view information you send. Do you want to continue?" That's a fairly familiar window - from a web browser - but as I said, I'm not. Anyway, I clicked No. That started a unstoppable flood of 'empty' IE6 windows! All titled something like 'No page to display'. Within seconds I had over a hundred covering the desktop. And I don't even *use* IE - my browser is Firefox. XP Home Task Manager brought an end to this, but I had to force closure of Movie Edit Pro and then IE6. 'Yes' takes me to the site, where I'm asked to register. I decline, so close that page. That returns me to the 3 options. 'More Info' gives a window titled 'What's new in Internet Explorer'! Where does that come from? Its content is the familiar one: "Entering a non-secure Web site from a secure Web site. The Web site you were viewing was a secure site. A secure Web site provides secure communication and has a valid certificate. blah blah ... If you do not feel confident about viewing this site, click No." Which is where I came in... Can anyone offer any clue as to what might be going on here please?     - Creating an icon for a mapped drive to a Win2003 Server fails. We have a share on our Windows 2003 server that we can map network drives to by using the address \\192.168.1.100\t$ If we use the map network drive command in My Computer from Windows XP, the mapping works fine. If we try to do the mapping by creating a shortcut icon on the desktop of the XP machine (right click on the desktop, click New, and then Shortcut, and key in \\192.168.1.100\d$ for the location of the item), we get an error indicating that "the file cannot be found". How would you go about doing this? This server does not have a FQD name that we can reference. We need to reference the IP Address. Thanks. After the installation I connect via modem to our office network via the VPN but when i returned the notebook to the lan and use ethernet to access the internet, it works very slow even through we have a fast internet connection.     - internet browsing re direct problem Hello When I go to a website like mail.live.com it takes me to either Google.com or gives a 404 error. I get the same problem with Firefox. I connect through a proxy. Some sites work ok like Google.com. On other computer it works fine with the same settings. I tried removing temporary internet files and cookies. What should I do?     - Wireless LAN ongoing problem I thought I had this working the other day, but it is onlly partially working. Here's the recap: I have a desktop and laptop each running XP Home and each connected to the internet via a Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router. The desktop is connected to the router via ethernet cable. The laptop is wirelessly connected to the router. Both computers access the internet successfully. Using the Network Setup Wizard on each, I've tried to define a Home Network over which I can share files and printers between the two computers. For each computer I have specified "other" for the Connection Method and then specified "This computer connects to the Internet directly or through a network hub. Other computers on my network also connect to the Internet directly or through a hub." (Is this the wrong option in the Network Wizard?) I've assigned each to the same Working Group and specified File and printer Sharing to be turned on. I am using User accounts with the same name, password, and administrator privileges on both computers. In My Network Places on the Laptop, the Desktop is recognized, but when I click to open the Desktop icon I get the following message: \\Desktop is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found." I have since resolved this issue by turning off the Windows Firewall and Norton Firewall on the desktop, and now from the laptop I can access the shared folder on the desktop and print to the printer physically connected to the desktop. But in My Network Places on the Desktop the Laptop computer does not show up at all. Turning off the firewall on the laptop does not fix the problem.     - My Network Places Hello... I am using XP-Pro with latest patches/fixes. I am hardwired to a Linksys Wireless Router which is hardwired to my Linksys Bridge/Range-extender. I receive my internet connection wirelessly thru the Bridge. I just noticed that there are some folders displayed in My Network Places that are from another computer that is not a part of my WORKGROUP. I can access these folders and download from them. This is a huge security risk for the owner of this computer. I am wondering WHY i can see these folders, and if there is a possibility that others might see my shared folders as well.     - PING... Windows XP Pro SP2 Firewall off IP is 192.168.0.5 Why would I be able to ping an external IP address, but not an internal one? For example, if I ping "159.54.238.23" I get replies back without issue. However, if I ping "192.168.0.2" I get a "Request timed out."     - Windows SBS 2003 Networking Issues I am trying to connect several clients to a SBS 2003 domain. I have no problem connecting Windows 2000 clients. These clients can browse most of the shared resources on the network. I am having problems with connecting Windows XP (Prof) client to the domain. It looks like the connection was ok, but I can not browse the network resources and the network can not access the local shares.     - Network Connectivity Issue. Hi, When I was trying to login to my system using my domain login ID and password, it tooks more than 10 mins to get connected to the network. This problem happens daily so I troubleshooted the issue as given below and came to know that the issue is due to Operating System. 1) I changed the LAN connectivity to another port and got the same problem and then confirmed that the problem is not due to network. 2)And the I disabled my onboard ethernet card and added new addon ethernet card and tried to connect to the network and got the same delay in connecting the network and so I confirmed that the problem is not due to onboard ethernet card. 3) And then I tried to connect the network through new ethernet cable and then confirmed that the problem is not due to cable. 4) And also I created a new login ID and got the same problem in that login so I confirmed that the problem is not due to user profile. The problem seemed to coincide with the installation of a noname(Tchibo)-USB-Webcam, which was deinstalled there after. The following is the problem: Both network cards (intel wlan and intel lan) are listed in the device manager as being okay. Drivers installed okay. "IBM connection manager" is not installed. Both cards are activated via the BIOS and the WLAN light signals that the card is active. however: ipconfig just replys "windows IP configuration". No adapter is listed. Network connection is empty. Trying to install a connection gets one to a screen where one can choose an adapter to establish the connection. The list to choose from features only the wlan card not the lan card and says about the wlan card that the installation can't procede till on would have activated the card again. The simple ip services like ping aren't installed but I don't see what I need them for? Does one have to install them in order to get any internet connection and to get the adapters listed? Pluging in a LAN-cable with a DHCP host on the other side won't make ipconfig or "network connections" show the ethernet adapter. I couldn't establish a connection to the ethernet. The WLAN/Bluetooth activation software started when clicked "FN+F5" just lists the Bluetooth adapter which can be activated and deactived. On pressing FN+F5 the software comes up and complains that the card can not be activated. (this doesn't seem to be a wlan problem however as the wired adapter isn't showing up (other than in the device manager) either.) Do you maybe have an idea, what the problem might be?     - Wireless LAN I have a desktop and laptop each connected to the internet via a hub. The desktop is connected to the hub via ethernet cable. The laptop is wirelessly connected to the hub. Both computers access the internet successfully. Using the Network Setup Wizard on each, I've tried to define a Home Network over which I can share files and printers between the two computers. For each computer I have specified "other" for the Connection Method and then specified "This computer connects to the Internet directly or through a network hub. Other computers on my network also connect to the Internet directly or through a hub." I've assigned each to the same Working Group and specified File and printer Sharing to be turned on. In My Network Places on the Desktop the Laptop computer is not recognized at all. In My Network Places on the Laptop, the Desktop is recognized, but when I click to open the Desktop icon I get the following message: \\Desktop is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found." (That last sentence seems to be key.) I am using User accounts with administrator privileges on both computers. I have only one firewall working on each computer.     - Disappearing HOSTS file XP Pro SP2 Hi All - I do web development, and I use the HOSTS files on our local machines to access test servers that don't have 'public' DNS names and for virtual servers on the local loop so we don't have to publish over the 'net to our own IIS6 servers. It works brilliantly. HOWEVER - I have one machine that just won't let me create/edit a HOSTS file. Well, it will let me create it, and then it will just wink out of existence right before your eyes. This box is running XP Pro 32 with SP2 installed & is up-to-date on hotfixes/patches. This is the only machine I am having this problem with AFAIK. I have 4 others where this is not the case. 2 with XP Pro and 2 with Media Center. I'm not sure when the problem began to be honest because machines are tasked differently. I noticed when I started publishing to a new virtual server - WOW - that was slow... of course I'm publishing to a fully qualified path, and I had created a host file to point to the local server, so I first pinged the FQDN - whoa - ti was resolving to the public DNS entry. It was so slow because the traffic was flowing out over the internet to the provider and then back to the server. I thought I might have made a mistake in the HOSTS entry, so I went to system32\drivers\etc - NO HOST FILE! Yep, I was logged on as Administrator when I created the file. I tried a couple of times, and finally used Crimson editor to create the file, and left the system32\drivers\etc folder open in Explorer. About a minute later - POOF! I suspect this is a function of Windows System File Checker. I have done some research along those lines, but I'm unsure if the HOSTS file is one of those protected? The only way I can figure this one based on what I have read is that this machine didn't have a HOSTS file when SP2 was applied - so SFC thinks there should not be one. One other thought has occurred and that was the Malware Removal tool might be responsible.     - Problems accessing site! Hi Everyone :) I have been having this problem for quite awhile now and I have done everything that was provided for me by the people who tried to help. Which was; clearing cookies and cache, checking browser settings, going to Microsoft help topics, reinstalling IE browser .. etc.. but so far I just don't know what to do now based on what I've done so far. :( My issue is that I can't access or go into lets just say ..     - Windows XP laptop with Static and DHCP requirement i have a windows xp pro laptop that I use primarily at my office. It has a static IP assignment and connected to our SBS2k3 domain. However, I need to be able to use it on the road. Unfortunately, when I return from a trip and was using the DHCP settings of the location I connected to (primarily for internet access), I am unable to connect back to my office. I use a wireless network mostly and I have a wireless printserver. The cameras are hardwired to the wireless router. Because of security et al the wireless connection is 54 MBps vs 100 MBps for the hardwired ethernet connection. I need to keep the wireless on this computer because my printserver needs it.     - Keep offline files from going offline with slow connection I am having a hard time keeping systems from going off line when connected via VPN or even a 10 meg (or better even) wireless. We need off line files enabled, but ONLY when they are really off line.     - Networks gone Running XP Pro SP2 on laptop. I am probably the worlds worst at making anything that has to do with networking work - not properly but at all. I'm not stupid, but I do not multitask worth half a cent. After installing XP I managed with a LOT of help to get a LAN working with my desktop (running another OS). This worked for a year or two using only such software as came with XP. (Not to include the internet which I use FireFox for.) Much more recently I got more help and got my first wireless connection working at a local laundromat and did some web surfing with it. About a month ago my browser (at home on dial-up) helped me install a bunch of trojans and viruses. None of this had anything to do with email or messaging I've never used any instant messaging and use IE as little as possible in any event. It took a couple days to get that junk ironed out. (My virus software is weak on catching incoming rubbish, except for email, but pretty good after the fact.) Since then, because of the virus issue - or not - both my LAN and my wireless operations have failed completely. Regarding the LAN, both machines say things are set up fine, but neither detects the other. It's as if the cable were unplugged. Regarding wireless I merely get no connection list. I've tried to reinstall networking, but seem to do my best work merely making things worse. If someone wants to rip me for not giving a nice professional description of my problem, fine. I get that all the time. I'm not a computer professional. I'm not even a computer amateur. If anyone can help me stumble through straightening this mess out that would be great.     - IE & Outlook Suddenly cannot see the internet I am using XP Pro SP 1.2 I have Windows Update set to Automatic Yesterday afternoon suddenly IE & Outlook stopped accessing the internet. I have 2 Windows machines hard-wired to a LinkSys WRT54G router which connects to a Cable Modem. The second machine works fine. IE, Outlook, no problems. From the first machine I can PING anything on the web, so I know I am connected. Network Connections says my LAN is Connected. Firewall is OFF. If I open the LAN Status box and PING something, the Sent & Received packet counts increment as expected. If I try to access an IP address (even the LinkSys at 192.168.1.1), the packet counts do not change. I have tried running thru both Network Setup and New Connection wizards. Nothing changes. The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time things
worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the malware/virus
status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and
versions) did you use to determine this?
