    - DNS issue on public library free wi-fi? We understand that sometimes there may be temporary DNS-related connectivity losses on public library (or other) free wi-fi. However, even using other DNS servers like OpenDNS or ScrubIt! sometimes does not resolve temporary loss of connectivity with IE 7 or Firefox 3. But uTorrent continues merrily without missing a bit (!). OE6, configured for news only with 3 different news-servers, works for the AIOE server but cannot find the Microsoft (this) and the Mozilla servers.     - Net Use Hi, I have been using the net use command previously with no trouble about 2 months (Windows XP Pro), but yesterday I have not been able to access any of the drives that need a specific password: net use y: "\\server\allfiles" net use z: "\\server\securefiles" * /user:securityuser the all files (y drive) is accessible but not the z drive which needs the securityuser password.     - Transporting a NEtowrk Connection Is it possible to transport a Network Connection, specifically a Network Connection that connects via VPN to our Company Server, using a flash drive or CD?     - Netbios username query Hi, I have a system which queries the netbios username of a remote PC. Unfortunately, during testing of a new XP build, the username is no longer being displayed with a 'nbtstat -n'. The Windows firewall is disabled. The 'Messenger' service has been restarted.     - VPN connects but cannot ping VPN Server I have setup a VPN between a Win XP Pro PC at the office and another Win XP Pro at home. Both are behind nat routers. The VPN works and authenticates OK, but I cannot explore/browse the shared files on the servers. I've tried to open files by \\Servername\ShareName and also by IpAddress/ShareName. But then realized I can't even ping the server addresss 192.254.1.97 Can someone guide me as to what's wrong.     - I've lost my home network I tried to read through the previous posts, but it appears that there could be any number of issues. Here's my story... I have a home network with 2 wired desktops and a wireless laptop - all running WinXP - plus a wired desktop running Vista Home Premium. All was fine. Then, my Linksys WRT54G router, so I purchased a Linksys N wireless router. Now, I'm in a mess. My Vista desktop occasionally recognizes one of the wired XP machines. And that XP machine occasionally sees the Vista machine. But it's inconsistent. And neither can ever actually see any folders on the other. (File sharing is on and some folders on each are shared.) The wireless laptop doesn't see any other machines - ever. I've tried all sorts of stuff - been through the MS KB and all the help files I can find.     - Mapped Network Drives in Internet Zone I've got an odd one for you all. I have about 100 XP SP2 workstations in a Multi-Site AD environment. I rolling out IE7 to our machines and I have noticed an strange behavior on the IE7 machines that I cannot seem to fix. I have the security zones setup in IE as the following (I've anonimized the names): Intranet Zone: [list] [*]*.parent.net [*]child.parent.net [*]*.child.parent.net [*]servername.child.parent.net [/list] Essentially I put all machines in the parent domain and the child domain in the Intranet Zone. Now the weirdness beings, when I type in the UNC "\\servername.child.parent.net\share" windows explorer tells me it is in the Intranet Zone, however when I map a drive to that same UNC path windows explorer tells me it's in the Internet Zone. I found a MS KB (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/303650) that states UNC paths with dots in them (IP Addresses & FQDNs) will always appear in the Internet Zone even though you have defined them in the Intranet Zone, but then why are my UNC paths displaying as in the Intranet Zone? I assume this is because I have enabled the "Intranet Sites: Include all network paths (UNCs)" in my IE Settings GPO. Has anyone run into this and figured out a way around it, or am I stuck? I would just reference all my network resources by their netbios name as the KB suggests, but we're in the multi-domain environment and accessing servers from the parent domain requires the FQDN.     - net view Hi. 5 WinXP SP3 machines permanently are in a LAN. They all have fix IP addresses. When I say "net view", the results vary greatly.     - dhcp and static IP on single nic I was trying to setup dhcp and static ip on single nic so I have two ips as described in this site: http://www.petri.co.il/configure_tcp_ip_to_use_dhcp_and_a_static_ip_address_at_the_same_time.htm but the problem is that in the end it doesn't assign the static ip's. I was on my school network without any problems at all until I installed an NVidia graphics card, the motherboard of the dell machine I use has an onboard graphics card which i have disabled so that I could use a seperate graphics card. The reason for this was so that I could have dual monitor display. But now for some unknown reason my network connection no longer works can anyone help? The operating system is windows xp professional, im completly stuck and i dont want to have to use an image disc as its not up-to-date.     - WinXP Pro + Fax Console + Caller ID Hello, i been breaking my head over this. What type of modem does Windows XP Pro. Fax Services require in order for Fax Console to recognize and fill in the "Caller ID" field? 1. i have tried 3 different modems (generic, generic, robotics) 2. all three different modems recognize the caller id when using AT+VCID=1 string, via HyperTerminal 3. in modem Control Panel, the string AT+VCID=1 is typed in the Advanced tab "Extra initialization commands" but, yet Fax Console will not display the caller id.     - XP Pro Requests Password When Accessing Folders From Another PC Hello, I hope someone can help me! I have an XP Pro Desktop wired to a linksys router. I have a laptop that I recently installed Windows Vista to. My roommate also has a Desktop with XP pro wired through the router. Prior to upgrading my laptop to Vista, I used to copy files and folders from XP Pro Desktop. After I upgraded my laptop to Vista, I can see my XP Pro Desktop, but when I try to access it via Window Explorer I get a pop-up that requests a username and password. I can access the folders on my Vista laptop from both Desktops with XP Pro. I can access the folders on my roommates Desktop with XP pro from my desktop with XP pro and my Laptop with Vista. I cannot access the folders on my XP Pro desktop from either my roommates XP Pro Desktop or my Vista Laptop without getting the pop-up requesting a username and password. I only use Windows firewall on all three machines. No third party firewalls are installed, however, the XP Pro Desktop that I cannot access did have Zone Alarm installed which I recently removed. I have allowing file/printer checked in Windows Firewall. All Computers are in the same workgroup. If anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate your assistance! The 650+ isn't detecting the 802.11b network in the area, which is WEP encrypted. I have another card, a Proxim Orinoco Gold 8420-WD, which detects and connects to the network just fine. I've installed the latest d-link driver. I've tried finding the network using windows, and using the d-link software. There is only one network in the area, but i doubt it would see the others if they existed. Any ideas?     - The DHCP Allocator Has Disabled Itself.... I've got a home user customer who is experiencing poor Internet performance at times on an XP Home SP2 machine that is connected via Ethernet to a Belkin wireless ADSL Modem/Router. There's no obvious problem as far as the ADSL installation or line stats but the System Event Log of the XP machine is full of many occurrences of the following event: Source: IPANTHLP Category: None Type: Error Event ID: 30013 "The DHCP allocator has disabled itself on IP address 192.168.2.2. since the IP address is outside the 192.168.0/255.255.0 scope from which addresses are being allocated to DHCP clients. To enable the DHCP allocator on the IP address please change the scope to include the IP address or change the Ip address to fall within the scope." The Belkin Router is assigning itself 192.168.2.1 and client addresses from 192.168.2.2. The IP address the XP machine is getting, 192.168.2.2, is within the reserved address range so I'm not sure why this error is being generated. Can anyone help? Tag: computers Tag: 289673

    - Puzzling nework behavior I had a 2 Win XP Home computer, one printer LAN running through a broadband router with no problem. But the router died and had to be replaced. After reinstalling the printer drivers both computers can talk to the printer. But that's where the reliability ends. On boot, neither computer can access the other via LAN. I get a permissions error. If I drop both firewalls my backup computer then can see the main machine. Then if I put the firewalls back up (kerio 2.15, btw), machine B STILL can see machine A in real time! Now to machine A. Machine A sees the LAN, "Mynet", but cannot access it. I get the "no permissions" error msg. I've spent a lot of time tinkering around and am getting absolutely nowhere.     - Help with connecting to wireless network I'm having trouble getting one of my computers to access the internet via my wireless network. My first computer connected and accesses the web no problem. I installed the wireless dongle on my second computer no problem and it says that it connects with a strong signal. The problem I have is that for a number of web sites I try to connect via a browser and it eventually "times out" and says that it can't connect. The same web sites connect no problem over the wireless on the other computer. When I ran the XP utility to analyze my connection it came back as saying that it couldn't connect over http, https, or ftp and called out ports 80 and two others (135 I think and another I can't recall) saying I may be blocked via firewall. The Windows firewall was on but I couldn't turn it off because it was set via group policy (it was off on the other computer). I disabled the Windows firewall by: From the Start menu, select Run, then enter gpedit.msc. Expand the Computer Configuration folder, then the Administrative Templates folder. Expand the Network folder, then the Network Connections folder, then the Windows Firewall folder. Select the Standard Profile folder. Double-click the Windows Firewall: Protect all network connections option. Select Disabled, then click OK. Select the Domain Profile folder. Double-click the Windows Firewall: Protect all network connections option. Select Disabled, then click OK. Close the Group Policy dialog box. I confirmed the firewall was disabled but I still have the same problem. It seems like something is blocking the loading of certain sites but I can't figure out why - I can load my geocities home page and msn.com but when I go to my ISP's home page to check mail via the web it doesn't work, same with many other pages like eBay.     - Wireless network problem with XP and Vista I added a Vista laptop to my wireless network and now my XP laptop times-out when tying to connect to websites. It has a good IP address and worked fine until I added the Vista machine. Also, I'm able to ping the router but no other machines. My XP machine will connect to other wireless LANS that have never had a Vista machine connected to them.     - Help! Firefox and Google gives me a DNS "redirect loop" error !!! This is weird. "Redirct loop FireFox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that never completes" This happens for docs.google.com google.com works fine. While it is trying, messages in the lower left flash by telling me it is trying and waiting for a response from the server. IE7 works fine on the same machine.     - Windows XP Home Edition all versions netbios sessions bug Hi! I am a security researcher and a software developer and this bug has been disturbing me for years!!! I have a home network, no domain, all computers have same workgroup name: "WORKGROUP". All my computers are default installation Windows XP SP3 Professional English except one Windows Home Edition (its an OEM version coming with Sony VIAO laptop, also updated to XP SP3, but the service pack is not the cause of the problem) In all my computers, I enabled file sharing in the windows firewall and all the share settings are standard and enabled. No security software or any hooking possible driver is installed on any of my computers. The problem is i cannot connect to any netbios share/rpc service in the Home Edition computer. Now the weird part, the only way which i am able to connect to the home edition computer is if i am connecting from it to another computer on my network using ONLY THE ADMINISTRATOR account and no other account even accounts with full administrator privilleges. Once i connected to another computer using the administrator accountm then he can connect back to me. I know the administrator account comes with a blank password at all xp home edition or just in OEM versions and it may not work because of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa limitblankpassworduse=dword:1 anyway in this case i changed the administrator password in my windows home. I know that windows xp home edition supports only simple file shating and that the design of simple file sharing is to share file access only using the GUEST account BUT this still doesn't explain why if the ADMINISTRATOR account CAN FULLY share files with a windows xp pro(with simoke file sharing turned off) but ONLY AFTER A "NET USE" WAS INITIATED FROM THE XP HOME EDITION MACHINE and ANY other attempt to connect to the xp home from remote using the administrator account is denied.     - XP PC wont DNS or DHCP Hi all, Have a PC here which won't pick up DHCP or DNS. Using DHCP gives me the 169.254... address. If I set a fixed IP add/gateway/DNS, I can ping anything I want by IP address only - still no DNS. NSlookup says "No response from server". I've tried using my router, but also known-working external DNS server. I've tried resetting TCP with netsh. - No joy. I've tried a different LAN card (in desparation). No Joy I've done a System Restore to a time when it WAS working. No Joy. I've tried drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes, and banging my head. No joy.     - Built in netword card shows up as removable on HP laptop HP supplies some of their current laptop models with a Broadcom network card built in that shows up as a removable device and can be accidentally "removed" by the user (Using the "Safely remove hardware" icon in the system tray).     - Remote Desktop -Windows XP So I used to be able to use Remote Desktop on my laptop to connect to my desktop with no issues whatsoever. However, a few weeks ago, I was suddenly unable to connect to my desktop. When I click on the Connect button, the buttons with gray out for a split second and then reenable and nothing happens...no error message, no connection, nothing. I can ping my desktop from my laptop just fine, I can connect to my laptop from my desktop fine, I just can't do it from my laptop to my desktop. Both computers are running XP Professional with Service Pack 3 with all the necessary updates. I made sure Remote Connections are allowed and that it exists in the Windows Firewall exceptions.     - network folders and printer shares lost I have a home network with 13 PC's. Many different printers and folders are shared and working but one specific XP workstation has lost it's shares. I can connect to shares from this PC by using the UNC path to connect to other computers, but I cannot browse to them. This PC has 2 shared folders which were working perfectly as well as a printer shared and working up until a few days ago, but now no other PC's on the network can connect to or see these shares, even the printer.     - Wireless Disabled Automatically Hi. I am using Acer Apsire 5562 running Windows XP service pack 3. I a having a problem with my wireless network. When I start up my laptop the wireless connection works fine for a few minutes. Later it jus disappeared.     - ICS-shared Connection dies when second PC obtains an IP from DHCP Evening! I've been experiencing problems with ICS and my connection for quite some time, but up until now, I was suspecting a certain 3rd party application to be at fault. Due to various reasons, I had to reinstall the 2nd Windows XP machine that uses my shared connection, and yet the problem persists. Setup: My PC is running Windows XP with SP 2, sharing its DSL Connection with my local network. I will refer to this one as PC#1 for the rest of this posting. This local network is bridged together from 3 different NICs; one running over to the 2nd Windows machine, the other from-time-to-time to connect my Mac using cross-over cable, and one for a Virtual Machine running linux. DSL (shared using ICS, remote administration is disabled) | [shared for] | Network Bridge (has DHCP enabled due to ICS, 192.168.0.1) | + Real 100MBit NIC to PC#2 + Real 100MBit NIC with Crossover, occasionally used by Mac + Virtual 100MBit NIC to Virtual Machine PC#2 is also running Windows XP with SP 2, and just yet a clean installation with only Antivirus, Firefox and Winamp installed as of now. I've observed the following pattern so far: 1) PC#1 is up and running, DSL is connected, PC#2 is off. 2) PC#2 is switched on, and after boot it tries to obtain an IP using DHCP. 3) PC#1 gets disconnected, the DSL Modem flashes a few times due to reinitialization. 4) PC#1 reconnects again, DSL is up again, PC#2 can also access the internet. No further problems from here on. Looking at the Event Log, PC#1 shows RemoteAccess informational Event 20159, as if I disconnected clean and by hand (for 3). PC#2 shows Tcpip informational Event 4201 (the NIC was connected to the network successfully and has obtained an IP using DHCP) a few seconds before PC#1 loses the connection (for 2). Other than that, no warnings or errors are recorded. Using the virtual machine (running Debian Linux 3.1 Sarge) or my Mac (running MacOSX 10.5.1 Leopard), this does not happen; those systems obtain their IPs using DHCP, and work right away. I think this problem is related to the configuation of PC#2, but I can only take a guess for that. Does anyone know of this problem, or even knows how to resolve it? It's pretty annoying losing the current connection just because the 2nd PC was switched on, especially when a Software Update or similar is in progress. Thanks in advance. WOL settin To whom it may concern, I have been wrestling with the following quetsion for some time now, but recently while interacting with a third party software vendor they made a statement that got me back to trying to figure the issue out. The statement was: Â¨Often on today's computer there is a second network card that runs out of band or active even if the computer is turned off.Â¨ I stated something like: Â¨I would think that this functionality would be possible even with a single network card provided that the Wake On Lan Option for the card be enabled. I know that the computer has an internal battery for the clock and such things so it would be possible to activate the computer through the network cardÂ¨.     - DHCP Client Service is missing from the services pane This has just happened following a drastic XP recovery exercise on the PC. I cannot pick up an dynamic IP address from my DHCP server on my XP Home PC because the DHCP Client service is not running. I cannot start the service because it does not appear in the services list in control panel. If I search on 'dhcpcsvc.dll' that shows the dll is present in the system filestore.     - What's different connecting directly to a cable modem? Main issue is a problem getting a relative's new computer to connect to the Internet. The relative has been operating a non-branded Windows 2000 computer for several years with an Ethernet cable connecting the computer directly to a cable modem. That computer developed registry problems that it cannot recover from with the "last known good configuration" option. Windows 2000 can't start in safe mode either. The relative doesn't have a Windows 2000 installation CD and there's no indication there's a recovery partition on the small hard drive. She decided to acquire a replacement computer. The new Vista Home Premium SP1 64 bit computer doesn't appear to be recognizing the IP address setting from the ISP. As a result the Internet is inaccessible and the computer is reporting limited connectivity to an "Unidentified network". By comparison to articles on the ISP's web site (obtained and printed out on another computer at another location) the cable modem is connected to the computer in the recommended way (directly with a standard cat 5 cable) and the various TCP/IP settings are as the ISP recommends. As prompted in a telephone conversation with one of the ISP's customer service representatives I rechecked the TCP/IP settings, disconnected and reconnected the Ethernet cable at both ends and cycled the power on the cable modem to reset it. the CS representative reset the modem via remote control as well and indicated that his terminal indicated that the computer's network adapter was visible through the cable modem. All the resets, power cycling and cable reconnect ions resulted in the computer reporting the disconnection and attempt to renegotiate the connect. Unfortunately the computer always resumed the "limited connectivity" to the "unknown network" The relevance to the Windows XP group IS coming! MY computer is running Windows XP SP2 and I am using a different brand cable modem with dual USB and Ethernet interfaces (same ISP). When I upgraded to broadband I was using the USB connection between the computer and cable modem (loading a driver was required). I later acquired a router and the additional cables to connect the components. The computer had no problem detecting the different connection. With the intention of taking my computer to my relative's residence to see if her cable modem was working properly I bypassed my router. With the same Ethernet cable I normally use between the router and the computer connected directly to MY cable modem in my residence my windows XP computer appeared to be having the same problem the relative's new Vista computer was having! My settings also correspond to those listed in the ISP's web article. Not wanting to spoil my settings for operating through the router I am reluctant to make any changes to my computer's settings. I haven't had the opportunity to try the router on her system and she would prefer not to use the additional piece of equipment with the additional power supply and cables. Do cable modems normally require a driver when connected directly to the computer's Ethernet adapter? My router doesn't appear to require one.     - XP SP2 - Cold Start Issue Have workstation with XP SP2 installed. When a non-admin users power's up the machine from cold-start and attempts to login, the file share is not accessible - getting \\FileServ\Users\<username>\<folder> is not accessible. You may not have permission to use this network resource. Access is denied. Network path was not found. Basically, person has permission on the \\FileServ\ server. What's interesting is the after the network login - you THAN able to access the fileshare area \\FIleServ\Users\<username> without incident. It's just during the complete recycle of power to machine - the server is not accessible. ANY suggestions - I've researched many newsgroups and not finding any suitable solution.     - Can't connect to the network On my XP desktop I suddenly can't connect to the network. If I do a system restore I can connect but all my profile information is lost (desktop. settings) etc. etc. Don't see anything in the event viewer except for a CI index corruption message that seems unrelated. Having no luck determining what DLL or system setting might be the issue. The devices say they are working fine. Intel Pro wireless software doesn't even know about the wireless card so something is really up. Since I get connectivity back with the restore I know that something happened but I need some direction on how to find it. Both my wireless and my broafband card are affected.     - Loss of File and Printer Sharing Hi everyone, Sometime in the past few days, I lost and then partially recovered file and printer sharing capability on one computer of my home network. The network consists of two MacBooks, an HP Compaq 6510b laptop issued to me by my employer, and my home workstation, a Dell Dimension 4700. All of these systems are wireless and connect to an AirPort Extreme, set up for NAT, which assigns IP addresses to all with DHCP. File sharing was enabled and functional among all of the computers, and there were two shared printers, also functional: one connected to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme, the other connected to my Dell. The Dell came with XP Home, which I upgraded to XP Professional. The laptop came with XP Professional. The laptop also came with Windows Firewall disabled and Symantec Client Firewall (SFC) installed and operating. I set up an allowed IP address range, covering all of the computers on the network, in SCF for file and printer sharing. I had also disabled Windows Firewall on the Dell, installed Zone Alarm, and also configured it for file and printer sharing. I used Bonjour to configure the shared printers for the PCs with no problem. To save desktop space, I often used Remote Desktop to run the laptop from my Dell without any problems. I'd share files between the two and also print from the laptop to the Dell's printer, no problem. Like many others, I lost Internet connectivity when Windows Update automatically installed SP3 and KB 951748 recently on the Dell. After researching the problem and reading through discussions here and at other formums like AumHa, I decided to uninstall Zone Alarm and enable Windows Firewall on the Dell. I made sure that the File and Printer Sharing exception was enabled when I did so. I also installed SP3 and KB951748 on the laptop. In addition to switching to Windows Firewall, I also recently purchased and installed BitDefender Antivirus 2008 (just the antivirus, not the full security suite), and I downloaded and ran Seconfig XP on the HOME setting (which, admittedly now in hindsight, I should probably have understood a bit better before doing...). I believe the Seconfig XP caused the initial loss of file and print sharing, as it closed a lot of ports and disabled things like NetBIOS, etc. My symptoms at this time were: * Loss of file and printer sharing over the network for the Dell. It was no longer able to connect to the shares on the MacBooks or the laptop, nor could I print to the network printer connected to the router anymore. * The MacBooks and the laptop were unable to even detect the Dell as a network computer. Fortunately, Seconfig XP saved the original configuration, and I was able to restore it. After the Seconfig XP restore, my symptoms now are: *The Dell can now connect to the shares on the MacBooks and the laptop. *The MacBooks and the laptop can now detect the Dell as a network computer. *The MacBooks and the laptop are still unable to access the shared folder on the Dell. *Trying to use the Add Network Place wizard on the laptop to navigate to the shares on the Dell, I get the error message "The folder you entered does not to appear to be valid. Please choose another." I've ensured that *the shared folder on the Dell is set to Share this folder *the share name is correct *the Everyone object has full access in Permissions *the File and Printer Sharing exception is still enabled in Windows Firewall I've also followed the procedure in the Troubleshooting File and Printer Sharing in Windows XP document located at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/thankyou.aspx?familyId=fd7fd48d-6b4a-448e-a632-076f98a351a2&displayLang=en. Still no luck. I saw on another thread in this forum that some antivirus software can interfere with file and printer sharing. Could the BitDefender AV be interfering? It does have a feature called real-time scan, which does scan network traffic on its default setting. Any help is appreciated; I'm happy to supply more information as required.     - Can't access shared files on network I have a desktop PC running Windows XP Professional directly connected to a netgear wireless super g router. It accesses the Internet without a problem. I have a laptop running XP Media Center V 2000 connecting to that router wirelessly that access the Internet without a problem. This setup worked perfectly two years ago before we moved temporarily and used the laptop in our new location and the desktop in our old location and did not have a network connection between the two. We have updated both computers with the various windows updates. I am running Norton Antivirus 2007 on both machines with the firewall on and Microsoft firewall off. Both machines have the IRPStackSize set to 25 decimal I can see in explorer and access the laptopâ??s C drive on the desktop but cannot see in explorer any drives on the desktop from the laptop. All desktop drives do appear in My Network Places but when I attempt to access them I get the message that: drive is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find out if you have access permission. Not enough server storage is available to process the command. I have a 320GB drive connected to the laptop via a USB2 connection to the drive enclosure. I can access all files on the drive from the laptop but get the same message about not enough server storage space when I attempt to access the USB drive from the desktop.
