    - Not enough memory to initialize winsock driver Hi folks, I'm getting intermittent disconnection from the internet. One of my application that I use for the internet shows this error message, "Not enough memory to initialize Winsok Driver". The funny thing is that I'm still connected to the internet and Windows shows the signal strength of my Wireless Internet Connection as excellent. However, I can't access the internet. Going to any web address in Firefox gives me the message, "Done" at the bottom, but nothing is happening -- no error message from firefox. I can't get any email in my Outlook Express either.     - Can't connect to Internet I have a cable modem going into a Netgear WGT624 Vs Router with latest firmware. It then goes into a wired hub and then into other XP boxes on my MSHome LAN. All is well here with the LAN and all goes into Internet. It does have a wireless option but I do not use it. One on of my XP boxes I have a Compex 16 Router which also have a wireless option which I use. It also has the latest firmware. I have a laptop with a wireless connection to that Compex and I get to the all LAN boxes okay but not to the Internet. What should I do to get to the web from the laptop?     - Is my network getting attacked? Some strange behavior on the network at a non-profit so at a suggestion I installed Wireshark to capture packets and I get strange looking behavior. As a comparison I tried it on a couple of other offices and don't get the same at all. Does this make sense to anyone or can you point me to some hack-savvy forum where they might? Below is about 30 lines of capture. On this Sat AM I have only the server, a workstation, the router and the switch on. The other stations have been off since the previous evening so all has had time to get settled. The server, workstation, and router all keep sending packets asking who has IP address x, and sending "name query" packets. Then the switch keeps sending "Spanning tree" packets. I'm sure some of this is normal on startup or periodic refresh but in this case it's pretty much all the traffic over the course of this 14 second snapshot.     - Internet Protocol reads "unavailable" I recently formatted my Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop and installed all th drivers. But, for some reason, the computer will not connect to th internet. The network connections menu reads that the wireles connection is enabled, but says it is sending/receiving 0 packets. then click on the support tab, and all of the items read "unavailable and cannot find an IP address.     - Device Manager is missing Network Adapters category Going through KB article 825826 (case 1 method 1) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825826/en-us . When I go into System Properties...Hardware...Device Manager, there is no category for Network Adapters. The list goes straight from Monitors to PCMCIA adapters. Running Windows xp Media Center Edition. Anyone have an idea how to fix that? I search the KB, but didn't find anything. Thanks. BTW, got here because Network Connections only shows my wireless connection, not the LAN connection. I re-installed my Generic Marvell Yukon Chipset Based Gigabit Ethernet Controller, but no change. (Somehow my networking got really screwed up during a Norton Internet Security 2008 install. Used System Restore to get rid of all my resulting blue-screen errors, and used the Norton Removal Tool to try to get rid of the failed installation, but my networking is still all screwed up.)     - Communication Port (COM1) devices is preventing hibernation or sta Hi, Every time after scanning my PC for errors the following error message eould preveny my PC from going into hibernation or standby mode The error message is â?? The device driver for the â??Communication Port (COM1) devices is preventing the machine from hibernation. Please close all application and try again. If problem persist, you may need to update the driver.â?? Usually I overcome this problem by uninstalling the COM1 driver at the Device Manager and Scan for hardware changes and let the system to reinstall it back. I could hibernater after this, I neeed to repeat this process whenever similar problem recur. I have spend more than 3 hours of Chat with MS Support and contacted OEM newsgroup for help, but solution offered was still unable to resolve the problem. These solutions are: 1 Uninstall and reinstall SP3 2. Reinsatall Intel and OEM drives (Network Adapters) at safe mode. Is there anybody from this newsgroup know how to fix this problem swiftly ?     - HOSTS file does nothing? Hi all, I edited my hosts file recently to block out a couple of ad-server domains and noticed it didn't do anything. Curious to test whether my hosts file worked at all, I directed www.google.com to 127.0.0.1 and ran IE. It promptly loaded www.google.com without any bother at all. I rebooted and still had the same issue. It seems the HOSTS file is being totally ignored. I've Googled for information on it but as far as I can tell, Windows XP still makes use of this file?     - Mysterious incoming net packets keep waking up systems I have three offices where there's a server and a number of stations and all are set to go to standby, but to be able to be awakened if I use RDP to connect for remote admin. But in the one office the systems wake up a few seconds after going to sleep. I've narrowed it down to something coming in from the internet, apparently with packets capable of waking the systems up. In the network card settings there's a selection for it can be woken by the "magic" frame or the "wake up" frame. I forget which, but one type is apparently what RDP triggers. If I turn off that kind of wake up the system stays in standby but then I can't wake it remotely. I have a nice router and switch which can probably tell me more than I know how to use, but there is a small, steady stream of unicast packets coming in from the internet and they are apparently the culprit. I don't know how normal this is, if it's a remnant of someone having had a virus, if it's a remnant of some file sharing software (which I take off).     - ping with dscp windows ignore ecn-ce field when I ping from machine A to B: >ping 121.1.1.1 -v 0x47 windows keeps delivering the ToS field as 0x46 in the IP datagram. This is what Wireshark reported. However, I didn't have any problem when pinging from a linux box. It appears that the 2nd Hex will always be round off to the lower even number when pinging from windows machine, e.g: 0x27 becomes 0x26 0x15 becomes 0x14 0xA3 becomes 0xA2 and so on.... When looking closely in Wireshark, this is this due to the last bit of the QoS because it's related to ECN-CE ....whatever, this means....does anyone know how can I turn on this function? So I can set the traffic all the way from 0 to 255 without any limitation? and secondly, starting with windows 2000 ....has microsoft updated the QoS filed to DSCP?     - CNN Virus Problem I had the CNN Virus Problem a few days ago and have finally cleared (I hope) the virus from my system. I now have a new problem. My lan contains the following components: wireless router, two computers, two printers, network backup drive Computer 1 had the virus. One of the print drivers was deleted somewhere along the way. Now, Computer 2 can ping all other parts of the network except Computer 1. Computer 1 can ping only itself, not even the router but it does have Internet access. IP address, mask and gateway are all the same as they used to be before the infection. No dup IPs on the network. Rebooting the standard million times has not changed anything. Setting a fixed IP address, rebooting no help. Back to DHCP, no help. The most eerie of all, the print driver for one of the printers, printing to a fixed IP address WILL print a test page but printing a normal document gets a disconnected error.     - Ad hoc network connection problems, XP to Vista I'm trying to set up an ad hoc network between an IBM T43 running Win XP Pro SP3 and a newer Dell laptop using Vista SP1. I can define the ad hoc network on the XP and get the Vista machine to "connect" to this network. But the T43 will not connect. I have selected "Use Windows to configure settings" in the Wireless Network Connection Properties window, but IBM Access keeps jumping back in and takes over. I think I might get farther if I could work only in Windows without this third party program making my waters muddy. Funny that even tho I used the ThinkPad to create the network it is the machine that is having connection difficulties. Any thoughts on how to get this set up?     - Looking to share my Laptop Wireless over Laptop LAN port Dear All, I have a machine upstairs right next to my laptop that is wirelessly connected to my router, I've tried to use a cross over cable between the two machines, but everytime I 'Enable' the LAN (even when the wireless has the correct IP and is enabled) I can't access the internet on my laptop. Disable the LAN and the internet comes back.... I must be doing something wrong... my Ip Range is 192.168.1.x, Default Gateway being 192.168.1.2. I've read various posts, some mentioning using 10.0.0.1 etc, but I was confused, as I have never had to use this before, as far as I was aware any device on the network has to be within the same ip ranges, I'm sure I've read somewhere that the subnet can make alterations to the numbers you can go up to, but as I've never needed more that 255 machines, I've always stayed with 255.255.255.0 (clasping at straws there) Is there anyway I can set up the laptop, so the wireless on the laptop still calls my router for internet, but shares the connection it receives over the lan port (cross over cable) and the 'other machine' can access the internet? There is 'NO' option what so ever for the 'other' machine to have a wireless nic put into it, or a usb version,etc it only has a lan port. Hope someone can help me with this predicament...     - DNS issue on public library free wi-fi? We understand that sometimes there may be temporary DNS-related connectivity losses on public library (or other) free wi-fi. However, even using other DNS servers like OpenDNS or ScrubIt! sometimes does not resolve temporary loss of connectivity with IE 7 or Firefox 3. But uTorrent continues merrily without missing a bit (!). OE6, configured for news only with 3 different news-servers, works for the AIOE server but cannot find the Microsoft (this) and the Mozilla servers.     - VPN connects but cannot ping VPN Server I have setup a VPN between a Win XP Pro PC at the office and another Win XP Pro at home. Both are behind nat routers.     - I've lost my home network I tried to read through the previous posts, but it appears that there could be any number of issues. Here's my story... I have a home network with 2 wired desktops and a wireless laptop - all running WinXP - plus a wired desktop running Vista Home Premium. All was fine. Then, my Linksys WRT54G router, so I purchased a Linksys N wireless router. Now, I'm in a mess. My Vista desktop occasionally recognizes one of the wired XP machines. And that XP machine occasionally sees the Vista machine. But it's inconsistent. And neither can ever actually see any folders on the other. (File sharing is on and some folders on each are shared.) The wireless laptop doesn't see any other machines - ever. I've tried all sorts of stuff - been through the MS KB and all the help files I can find. I rolling out IE7 to our machines and I have noticed an strange behavior on the IE7 machines that I cannot seem to fix. I have the security zones setup in IE as the following (I've anonimized the names): Intranet Zone: [list] [*]*.parent.net [*]child.parent.net [*]*.child.parent.net [*]servername.child.parent.net [/list] Essentially I put all machines in the parent domain and the child domain in the Intranet Zone. Now the weirdness beings, when I type in the UNC "\\servername.child.parent.net\share" windows explorer tells me it is in the Intranet Zone, however when I map a drive to that same UNC path windows explorer tells me it's in the Internet Zone. I found a MS KB (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/303650) that states UNC paths with dots in them (IP Addresses & FQDNs) will always appear in the Internet Zone even though you have defined them in the Intranet Zone, but then why are my UNC paths displaying as in the Intranet Zone? I assume this is because I have enabled the "Intranet Sites: Include all network paths (UNCs)" in my IE Settings GPO. Has anyone run into this and figured out a way around it, or am I stuck? I would just reference all my network resources by their netbios name as the KB suggests, but we're in the multi-domain environment and accessing servers from the parent domain requires the FQDN.     - net view Hi. 5 WinXP SP3 machines permanently are in a LAN. They all have fix IP addresses. When I say "net view", the results vary greatly. Sometimes it shows me only 1 computer, sometimes all 5. No scheme detectable. Why is that? Otherwise, the network works just fine.     - dhcp and static IP on single nic I was trying to setup dhcp and static ip on single nic so I have two ips as described in this site: http://www.petri.co.il/configure_tcp_ip_to_use_dhcp_and_a_static_ip_address_at_the_same_time.htm but the problem is that in the end it doesn't assign the static ip's. I was on my school network without any problems at all until I installed an NVidia graphics card, the motherboard of the dell machine I use has an onboard graphics card which i have disabled so that I could use a seperate graphics card.     - XP Pro Requests Password When Accessing Folders From Another PC Hello, I hope someone can help me! I have an XP Pro Desktop wired to a linksys router. I have a laptop that I recently installed Windows Vista to. My roommate also has a Desktop with XP pro wired through the router. Prior to upgrading my laptop to Vista, I used to copy files and folders from XP Pro Desktop. After I upgraded my laptop to Vista, I can see my XP Pro Desktop, but when I try to access it via Window Explorer I get a pop-up that requests a username and password. I can access the folders on my Vista laptop from both Desktops with XP Pro. I can access the folders on my roommates Desktop with XP pro from my desktop with XP pro and my Laptop with Vista. I cannot access the folders on my XP Pro desktop from either my roommates XP Pro Desktop or my Vista Laptop without getting the pop-up requesting a username and password. I only use Windows firewall on all three machines. No third party firewalls are installed, however, the XP Pro Desktop that I cannot access did have Zone Alarm installed which I recently removed. I have allowing file/printer checked in Windows Firewall. All Computers are in the same workgroup. If anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate your assistance! I've got a home user customer who is experiencing poor Internet performance at times on an XP Home SP2 machine that is connected via Ethernet to a Belkin wireless ADSL Modem/Router. There's no obvious problem as far as the ADSL installation or line stats but the System Event Log of the XP machine is full of many occurrences of the following event: Source: IPANTHLP Category: None Type: Error Event ID: 30013 "The DHCP allocator has disabled itself on IP address 192.168.2.2. since the IP address is outside the 192.168.0/255.255.0 scope from which addresses are being allocated to DHCP clients. To enable the DHCP allocator on the IP address please change the scope to include the IP address or change the Ip address to fall within the scope." The Belkin Router is assigning itself 192.168.2.1 and client addresses from 192.168.2.2. The IP address the XP machine is getting, 192.168.2.2, is within the reserved address range so I'm not sure why this error is being generated. Can anyone help?     - Puzzling nework behavior I had a 2 Win XP Home computer, one printer LAN running through a broadband router with no problem. But the router died and had to be replaced. After reinstalling the printer drivers both computers can talk to the printer. But that's where the reliability ends. On boot, neither computer can access the other via LAN. I get a permissions error. If I drop both firewalls my backup computer then can see the main machine. Then if I put the firewalls back up (kerio 2.15, btw), machine B STILL can see machine A in real time! Now to machine A. Machine A sees the LAN, "Mynet", but cannot access it. I get the "no permissions" error msg. I've spent a lot of time tinkering around and am getting absolutely nowhere.     - Help with connecting to wireless network I'm having trouble getting one of my computers to access the internet via my wireless network. My first computer connected and accesses the web no problem. I installed the wireless dongle on my second computer no problem and it says that it connects with a strong signal. The problem I have is that for a number of web sites I try to connect via a browser and it eventually "times out" and says that it can't connect. The same web sites connect no problem over the wireless on the other computer. When I ran the XP utility to analyze my connection it came back as saying that it couldn't connect over http, https, or ftp and called out ports 80 and two others (135 I think and another I can't recall) saying I may be blocked via firewall. The Windows firewall was on but I couldn't turn it off because it was set via group policy (it was off on the other computer). I disabled the Windows firewall by: From the Start menu, select Run, then enter gpedit.msc. Expand the Computer Configuration folder, then the Administrative Templates folder. Expand the Network folder, then the Network Connections folder, then the Windows Firewall folder. Select the Standard Profile folder. Double-click the Windows Firewall: Protect all network connections option. Select Disabled, then click OK. Select the Domain Profile folder. Double-click the Windows Firewall: Protect all network connections option. Select Disabled, then click OK. Close the Group Policy dialog box. I confirmed the firewall was disabled but I still have the same problem. It seems like something is blocking the loading of certain sites but I can't figure out why - I can load my geocities home page and msn.com but when I go to my ISP's home page to check mail via the web it doesn't work, same with many other pages like eBay.     - Wireless network problem with XP and Vista I added a Vista laptop to my wireless network and now my XP laptop times-out when tying to connect to websites. It has a good IP address and worked fine until I added the Vista machine. Also, I'm able to ping the router but no other machines.     - Windows XP Home Edition all versions netbios sessions bug Hi! I am a security researcher and a software developer and this bug has been disturbing me for years!!! I have a home network, no domain, all computers have same workgroup name: "WORKGROUP". All my computers are default installation Windows XP SP3 Professional English except one Windows Home Edition (its an OEM version coming with Sony VIAO laptop, also updated to XP SP3, but the service pack is not the cause of the problem) In all my computers, I enabled file sharing in the windows firewall and all the share settings are standard and enabled. No security software or any hooking possible driver is installed on any of my computers. The problem is i cannot connect to any netbios share/rpc service in the Home Edition computer. Now the weird part, the only way which i am able to connect to the home edition computer is if i am connecting from it to another computer on my network using ONLY THE ADMINISTRATOR account and no other account even accounts with full administrator privilleges. Once i connected to another computer using the administrator accountm then he can connect back to me. I know the administrator account comes with a blank password at all xp home edition or just in OEM versions and it may not work because of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa limitblankpassworduse=dword:1 anyway in this case i changed the administrator password in my windows home. I know that windows xp home edition supports only simple file shating and that the design of simple file sharing is to share file access only using the GUEST account BUT this still doesn't explain why if the ADMINISTRATOR account CAN FULLY share files with a windows xp pro(with simoke file sharing turned off) but ONLY AFTER A "NET USE" WAS INITIATED FROM THE XP HOME EDITION MACHINE and ANY other attempt to connect to the xp home from remote using the administrator account is denied.     - XP PC wont DNS or DHCP Hi all, Have a PC here which won't pick up DHCP or DNS. Using DHCP gives me the 169.254... address. Hi
Make sure that all computer are set to the same Group and each one has
unique name.
If you have Drives thta are mapped to other names UnMap them. Delete icons
and links that are not set with the correct properties.
Be patient after few days and few reboots the "dead stuff" would disappear.
