Thanks, its good for me to review the security section in your link! Since
verizon replaced my router I hadn't gotten around to reconfiguring it: I
was using WPA with MAC address filtering before. Actually this (wireless
suddenly not working) problem was coincidental with the windows update but
turned out to be caused by a baby monitor using a similar wireless
frequency. Changed the channel on the monitor camera and the problem went
away.
