Network Setup Wizard (XP) did not work, ping does not work
My in-laws have 3 computers they want to network, so I gave it a shot. It
didn't work. :-)
For my benefit, please don't use too much jargon, I use these things, I
don't profess to know how to fix them. ::laughing::
This problem developed 2 months ago, but I was not able to stay with them to
solve the problem, it was time to come home. So I -think- I remember every
thing correctly.
The decision to network was made in conjunction with signing up for DSL.
The DSL modem is routed to a wireless router. All 3 computers are hardwired
to the router. Originally, one computer was to be wirelessly connected to
the network, but for practical reasons the wireless plan was discarded after
the router was purchased.
The software installation for the DSL install went fine. All three
computers access the internet with no problems. 2 computers have XP Home,
and one has Windows 98. The Windows 98 is most likely way behind in updates.
I've just installed 98SE on an old computer of mine, and learned that the
latest version of IE6 SP1 had to be installed for windows update to work.
It's highly unlikely the Win98 computer hs been updated for possibly years.
I will need to check this on the inlaws' computer.
After following the Network Setup Wizard instructions using an XP machine,
including creating the floppy disk and hoofing it to the other computers (all
of 10' max! LOL) I found I could not read the hard drives of the other
computers, even though the shared folders and such had been created on the
hard drives of each machine.
Having learned about the Ping command from the IT folks where I used to
work, I got the IP address of each computer (IPCONFIG). In the command
window of each computer, I tried to Ping the other 2 computers. Of the 6
possible Ping commands, only 2 of them gave me a return.
Could anyone give me some instructions as to how to go about finding the
solution to their network problem? Even if it's just knowledge base articles
I can print out.
I won't be at their place for a couple of weeks. I'm just doing some
preemptive educational activities (LOL) here, prior to leaving town from
their location.
Thanks, folks, have a great weekend. Tag: Windows explorer 7 freezing up Tag: 289168
log on window problem
I am using an XP-pro version (1985-2001) on my toshiba R100 and since then
never had any issues witn the software or whatever, and the XP had been
performing brilliantly well, but today. Just of this morning I couldn't
figure out how I could connect back to my wireless router as I have just
changed my wireless security feature, and during the process of trying to
figure out my laptop's wireless Smart Card and certificates I happen to
restart my laptop.. but during the process though, a small screen came out
(windows log on screen) prompting my username and password. However, an old
username automatically has been provided in the username box and I can no
longer remember my password for it. I kept on trying though, but to no avail.
I need immediate help for this section very badly. Anything will be highly
appreciated. Thank you! Tag: Windows explorer 7 freezing up Tag: 289149
Home WLAN & Internet WLAN simultaneously
Hi,
I have a Dell D600 with Pentium M running XP SP3 and have two WPA-secured
WLANs available - home (file sharing & printing) and internet from next door
(landlord paid for!).
I want to connect to both networks at the same time without the need to
disconnect from the internet link to print and visa versa via the 'View
Wireless Networks' dialogue! Is there a simple way to do this for a person
who only understands the basics of networking!

Pop up message from Local Network. I've searched everywhere...
Hi,
I really need help here. Today, all of a sudden I couldn't go into the LAN
to add a static IP address, all my options are greyed out. The pop up I get
is: Some of the controls on this property sheet are disabled because one or
more other Network property sheets are already open. To use these controls,
close all these property sheets and then reopen this open. Funny thing, this
is the only one open. I've shut the pc down, I've restarted, I've removed all
network cards from the device manger, shut the pc down and restarted to let
it reinstall the network card.
I'm on WinXPRO SP3. All the updates are installed. This is a work computer
and I'm trying to set it up so I can use vpn from home to access this pc when
I'm on call. I can go in and do all this stuff under safe mode and not
receive the pop up message and all my options are available. I have no
viruses or malware etc... scanned with everything on the net and still same
thing. If the static ip address changes I don't want to keep going in to safe
mode to change it. I shouldn't have to! Please help.... Tag: Windows explorer 7 freezing up Tag: 289142
netowrk with 2 ISPs.
Hi all.
2 ISPs are configured in 2 broadband routers with LAN IP 192.168.0.1 and
terminate in 2 different networks. ( 1 hub with 5 workstations and 1 switch
with 15 workstations ) thus not conflicting. IP range 100 - 120 and gateway
192.168.0.1 for all workstations. When one of the ISP goes down, i d/c the
LAN port of router from specific switch ( to avoid ip conflict ) and connect
another cable "switch to hub" trying to shift traffic to other switch / hub
automatically. This sometimes works, sometimes does not. If it doesnt, i have
to disable enable ethernet card manually to make it work. Workstations show
192.168.0.1 timed out until disabled and re-enabled.
Looking for something that would work for sure.. Would a switch instead of
hub work? Any other way i can do this just by shifting cables?

Windows XP Home file-sharing issues
Hi,
The other month my desktop computer blew up..I mean it fried everything
except the hard drives. So, still wanting access to my media drive, I stuck
the thing in a spare computer in my basement and activated file sharing on
it. At first, the access was just generally slow and buggy, stopping a lot
of times mid-transfer of files or, when i'd try to access a file, Windows
would hang. As it turns out the wireless connection was not enough to
transfer files (although it worked when pulling stuff off the second laptop
on my LAN), so I switched it to a wired connection and for a while, it ran
fine..but then I started getting a LOT of the exact same problems..and wound
up getting the error about no more connections. Both the PC with the media
drive and the laptop were running Win XP Home.
After a RAM upgrade in my laptop I started running Vista because, well, it
was actually running somewhat decently. I thought that SOME of my problems
would go away, but if anything, they've only gotten worse. I'm still getting
"Connection Limit" errors at least once or twice a day. Sometimes it'll
happen while i'm using it, other times it'll be after I've stopped using it
for a few hours and attempt to use it (such as getting up and going to work
and then coming home).
I know XP has a 5 connection limit...but seriously, how many connections are
created when streaming media off the thing? I'm the only person who accesses
the machine so I can't for the life of me figure out why my connections
would be maxing out; but it *NEVER* fails, every day it'll hit connection
limit and i'll have to reboot. Other times before it hits connection limits
it makes me wait 45 seconds to a full minute before serving the file...and
today, I just got a "Network Error" when trying to connect to the drive,
meaning I have to walk down to my basement and reboot a perfectly working
machine just so I can continue to have somewhat-buggy (but somewhat working)
file sharing.
I've tried all the registry tweaks I could find , and several people i've
spoken to can't figure out why I'm having these issues..so i'm bringing it
here? Why is file-sharing on my network acting like such a joke? What can I
do so I don't have to crawl over to the closet the machine is in every 14
hours to reboot it? Tag: Windows explorer 7 freezing up Tag: 289134
Computer loses network connection

Some programs, when shutdown, continue to appear running in Task Manager,
sometimes several copies.
Also, computer loses network connectivity - can still ping all computers on
the network, but can not connect; workgtoup finds no connection.
Full shut down and restart restores connectivity until the next time it
shuts dow.

Static Routing in XP
Hello,
I had a few questions regarding static routes. Here's the setup:
On my XP Pro machine, I have created 2 persistent static routes, both
pointing to the same subnet, going through two different routers (primary and
backup).
route -p add 192.168.1.0 mask 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.253 metric 1
route -p add 192.168.1.0 mask 255.255.0.0 192.168.1.254 metric 10
The data is very time-sensitive, so I cannot have much failover latency. If
my primary route (through .253) goes down,
A) How long will it take to fail over to the backup?
B) Will XP then ignore the primary route and consider the backup as the
primary, or will XP keep checking to see if the primary is up every so often
(how often)?
C) If my primary goes back up again, will traffic then shift back to it?
Thank you,

Http connection stops working after installing June Security Updat
I'm at the end of my rope. I've been using my Dell Inspiron 9300 (XPSP2) for
nearly 3 years without incident. The only change ever made to the laptop is
that which autoupdate delivers- as I call, the "monthly visitor".
After the June Security updates, I lose HTTP connections after about 10 mins
(rebooting brings it back)
Https and FTP still work.
I can ping external- such as www.hotmail.com
MSN Messenger still works.
Network Monitor shows only that the remote server "resets" or refuses the
connection.
I am running over a HNS Directway satellite connection. If I dial up over my
modem to PeoplePC, AND vpn into my corp network, then the problem does not
display itself. (Cisco Vpn Client)
It does not make a difference if I run over my wireless router, or plug the
cable into my laptop. It also doesn't make a difference if I drive to
starbucks, and attempt to get online via their TMobile hotspot. Same results.
Running in Safe Mode w/Networking does not display the problem.
System restore to checkpoint earlier than updates fails.
Have run every scan known to mankind- turned off Windows Firewall, Disabled
my Symantec Antivirus and nothing helps.
I've also reset the tcp/ip stack using netsh winsock reset- twice.
The problem began after the first automatic download of June updates. I
suspected KB951376 to be the problem, as it was the only patch (BlueTooth)
that seemed like it could affect my networking. I removed this update, and
eventually ALL of the June updates. The problem went away, then returned.
I went away for the weekend, came back- and autoupdate had lovingly
reinstalled all of the updates for me. My computer restarted on its own
accord, and I was working fine for the rest of the week. Not one to dismiss a
stroke of good luck, I went merrily on my way.
The problem returned on Friday. A check of installed updates showed that the
KB in question was back- only in a V2.
Removed V2, but the problem persisted.
Checked the registry, and found the KB was still installed- Looked again,
and noticed that V2 didn't replace the original KP951376, and it was
installed as well.
Removed it.
The problem still exists.
In summary- No http. Yes https. Yes FTP. Yes Ping. Yes Telnet.
Can anyone offer some advice? Tag: Windows explorer 7 freezing up Tag: 289099

Sharing Connection with STB
Forgive my ignorance, i tried to read the forum but couldnt find something
similar.
I have winxp on my laptop connected wirelessly to DSL router. I have a VPN
connection to external network. What i want to do is to be able to connect an
STB (satellite receiver, with network setup enabled) through the VPN
connection i have on my laptop.
I connected the STB to laptop with an ethernet cable. now i have in Network
Connections: Wireless network connection, Local Area connection, and local
area connection 2 (with the VPN IP).
Can someone guide me how i can let the STB connect throught the VPN
connection. What is the IP and Gateway that i need to put in both Local Area
Connection and in the STB network settings. If i need to enable the "enable
users on the network to connect through this computer network connection" on
which connection should i enable it, and then what do i select under "home
networking connection"
Maybe i am doing it the wrong way, and it's not enabling that option that
should resolve this issue?
I appreciate your kind help.

Here is what I have done thus far.
1. Configured Host Computer with IIS. No prob
2. Configured Host Computer with my own Port #. No prob
3. Configured Router to Forward My Port# & Port 3389. No prob
I can connect to my computer at work from another computer & visa-versa ex:
my co-worker comp to mine and mine to my co-worker comp. By the way we are
on DSL here at work. So my issue is when I disconnect my DSL and connect to
the internet thru dial-up modem and then try to connect to my co-workers comp
thru the IE browser it seems to be searching but nothing happens.
Here is what I did.
http://co-worker IP:co-worker PORT/tsweb
Then I tried something else was to enter our Router Gateway IP instead of
co-workers
http://Router IP/co-worker PORT/tsweb
This time the Web Log in Box showed, I clicked CONNECT and it tried to
search but then I got an Remote Desktop Disconnected error.
Hope someone can help me out on this. Hard to find answers on the web.

Isolating wired and wireless clients
I am trying to determine the most effective (and cost-efficient) way
to isolate wired and wireless connections on the following setup:
I currently have a building with 15 ethernet connections to the
Internet. At three of the locations, a wireless router (Linksys
WRT54G v8) will be used to:
1. share the network connection via ethernet with two computers
2. provide wireless connectivity
I am not concerned w/ wired computers communicating with other wired
computers. But I do not want any communication between wired and
wireless computers. Any good ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.
Solutions that I have dismissed:
I believe the Linksys WRT54G v8 does not have native support for
VLANs.
(Perhaps an alternative firmware like dd-wrt? I believe this would be
one of the easiest solutions, but I worry about installing third-party
firmware and, in the future, leaving it in another person's hands that
isn't familiar w/ such.)
I could buy another router for each and utilize double NAT, but that
would be another $150+ (not including deals) and could - or so I've
heard - limit some services (most notably VPN?).
I am open to suggestions about securing the "post-NIC" side of the
connection, but I would prefer to plug & go without extra
configuration (e.g. static IP w/ software firewall).
Also, any additional resources/web sites for further clarification or
explanation would be appreciated. Tag: Windows explorer 7 freezing up Tag: 289078
network storage device permissions
I have a network storage device (more specifically a BuffaloTech
LinkStation) and a PC with Windows MCE 2005:
I like it but whenever I connect an external USB drive to it I can only
read/execute whats on the drive (NOT the internal drive to the linkstation
BUT the drive that's connected to the linkstations usb ports), I can't
move, delete, or rename files/folders (or even create a new file) but i can
seem to copy files to the device.
Under LinkStation settings, I have shared folders for the USB drive:
Shared folder support: Windows, ftp, backup
Shared folder attributes: read/write
recycle bin disabled
access restrictions enabled (with proper username/passwords as on windows)
and under web access settings i am using in herited folder permissions.

share my printer between 2 computers and surf with 2 computers at
Hello all,
People probably asked you a thousand times but I can't manage to
gather the information I need by searching the web so here is my
situation:
I have a pc with windows XP home SP3 upstairs and a HP Deskjet 916c
printer which is upstairs too. Downstairs I have a notebook with
windows xp professional and also a motorola sb5100E modem.
What I do now to surf the web with my notebook is pull the cable (UTP
with RJ45 connector) that comes from my pc upstairs out of my modem
(which is downstairs) and then connect my notebook with another
shorter UTP cable to the modem. For printing I go upstairs with my
notebook and take the usb cable out of my pc to plug it into my
notebook. I know there's a much easier way without having to plug out
cables all the time but I'm a total noob when it comes to networking
issues.
To summarise, I would like to:
1a. avoid swapping cables all the time
1. share one printer between 2 computers without having both computers
turned on all the time (one computer may be off while printing from
the other).
2. be able to surf the net with both computers simultaneously is not a
must but if it's easy to setup it's always welcome.
What kind of hardware would I have to buy for this? I read about
switches, hubs, routers, print servers and I don't have a clue what
the difference is, let go how to set it up. Important thing to add: I
like to play online games from time to time and I read that routers
can be quite tricky when you want to forward ports so I'm a bit
reluctant about routers unless you can convince me otherwise (I find
it already hard enough trying to figure out how to program my
firewall).
Thanks a lot in advance for your help. Tag: Windows explorer 7 freezing up Tag: 289062
Limited Connectivity
I've just brought my laptop (running XP pro) back from university, where the
internet worked perfectly fine. Now I've hooked it up to my home network (3
computers connected to a router, connected to a dsl modem) and suddenly I'm
getting a the limited or no connectivity message and cannot access the
internet at all any more.
I've tried repairing the connection, which falls at the first hurdle by not
being able to renew my IP. I've done an ipconfig /release and /renew to no
effect. I've tried different cables and different ports on the router, which
again did nothing. I've also tried deleting and reinstalling my network
drivers and even the network connection itself but still no change. I even
did a complete format and reinstall of XP, but yet again nothing changed.
I'm completely stumped, if you have any ideas whatsoever I'd be really
grateful. Tag: Windows explorer 7 freezing up Tag: 289061

Current situation is as follow:
I'm using cable modem connected to DSL router with 4 ports, one being the
LAN/WAN port.
The PC with the Realtek LAN card can connect to the internet without problem
but not the PC with the Dlink LAN card.
If i setup static local IP on both PC, both PC can communicate without

system.
spiceworks asks me for my remote admin priveleges on all my computers. is
there any way I can create this type of privelege on the XP/NT machines, to
allow Spiceworks to log in to these machines?

Screamer
Tab
When I click on Dads under Microsoft Windows Network while on Tab computer I
get error message. "Dads is not accessible. You might not have permission to
use this network resource. Contact the administrator to find out if you have
access permissions. The network path was not found"
While on Dads computer under same location, the workgroug ISMGroup only
lists out Dads C drive and shared folders etc.
Other problems while on Dads is that only 4 of the 6 already setup mapped
network drives exist, and of those 4 I can only see Tab and Databox, and
cannot see Ralph or Laptop when I click on each under the mapped network
drive section.
We cannot recall changing any settings. I am trying to use "browstat status"
to debug. Tag: Windows explorer 7 freezing up Tag: 289020
All XP home LAN - file-sharing stubborn bewteen just 2 systems
I'm in the UK and have a Main computer (XP) that connects by ethernet to the
BT Home Hub H (version 6.2.6.E) and a wireless LAN consisting of 3 other
desktops and a laptop, all XP. I've had no big problems over the months I've
set up file- and printer-sharing other than the typical Zone Alarm matters of
ensuring the IP range is covered.
I've suddenly lost file-sharing ("not accessible... might not have
permission... network path not found") between the laptop and the Main
desktop. Neither wishes to share with the other, although they see each
other, and ping each other ok, as do all the others. All the others are ok
and can file-share as normal amongst themselves and the Main one. The laptop
shares OK with the others. It's just the laptop and Main that are having a
spat.
I've tried in vain setting up a whole new network name. I've tried in vain
opening a new folder in each to share in the hope it might trigger some
action. And I tried in vain deactivating Zone Alarm on both at the same time.
I feel sure it's an XP file-sharing issue, but can think of nothing else to
try.
File-sharing is not something I do on a regular basis between the laptop and
the Main system, but I suspect that this may be a post SP3 symptom - SP3 is
on all systems now.
I've enabled the Guest account on both systems.
Any ideas please?

Local Network or Internet?
My workgroup consists of three computers, 2 Laptops connected to a
router/modem wireless, and a Desktop connected to the router via cable. I
created the workgroup by using the wizard. When I check "My network places"
they are all in the Internet and not in a Local Network. Should they not all
be in a local network?

problem in WinXP sp3 when using network neighborhood
Hi,
Recently, I updated 2 pcs into SP3. But, I found when I click the "network
neighborhood". It is okay and showing the window. However, after closed the
"network neighborhood" window and re-click again. Since, I always need to
use that function in sharing files with other PCs.
In other SP2 PCs, there is no such problem.
Does the problem cause by SP3? Any solution is to solve it? Or, downgrade
to SP2?
Thanks

telnet.exe logging in anomaly
I am not sure if this is an anomaly.. but it happened today when I was
messing with telnet.
SFS off. So, using AFS. So, Classic user authentication.
CompA, CompB.
CompA connecting to CompB.
Both had an account called Admin
(matching passwords, prob matching fullname)
To connect, I guess it logs in as whoever is logged in on CompA. So I
was running telnet.exe from the command prompt, and using RunAs (in a
bat to speed things up). So I could launch a command prompt as Admin
for example, and then do telnet compB 23
If the Admin account on CompA was made Limited/LUA. i.e. removed from
the administrative group, (CompB's Admin account, is Administrative)
Then I found that in order to log on onto compB, CompB had to be
logged in as Admin.
If CompB was logged in as anybody else, be it, built in administrator
(which is administrative). Or, as some limited user. CompA could
not connect to it.
I would get an error "Failure in initializing the telnet session.
Shell process may not have been launched..........", when I tried to
connect and CompB was not logged in as Admin locally.
I think it gave that error message repeatedly e.g. 3 times in a row if
I tried 3 times.
So that was where CompA had Admin limited. compB had it
administrative.
But after alot of fiddling around, I am not sure what changed things,
but now Admin acts like the other accounts. I can't reproduce the
behaviour. Even if CompA's Admin account is limited it still works
.
Any ideas what would cause that?
note- regarding that Failure error message, I managed to cause it
another way, which eventually I couldn't reproduce. I found that if I
made the Admin account non administrative on the remote machine, and
logged in locally on the remote machine, as Admin, then it could not
read the Admin folder. With that symptom, the other symptom was that
when I logged in remotely as Admin, it would give the failure message.
(note- with that cause of that failure, I think it only gives that
error once or twice.. if you keep trying to log in, it logs in as TMP
and as Admin.001 and things. And so I then fixed the Admin account to
point to the Admin directory, restarted windows 'cos you have to. )
It's not of great practical consequence.. though useful to know how it
is working. But it does mean that
You can get failure messages the other odd behaviour described when
connecting CompA to compB, and one of them is Limited the other
Administrative.
So it's nice to know a cause for that.. Since I got it in win xp 32-
bit, and the windows kb article said it was a 64-bit thing.
The KB article suggested something involving something like starting
and stopping and unregistering and registering tlntsvr. (one might
have to start it through the gui not command line, when I tried it I
got an error from command line when starting it).
It didn't make a diff for me anyway.
The other thing I found was to make sure that the service "Secondary
Login" was started (some people had their disabled or disabled theirs
because a windows 2k3 security book or something said to) That didn't
apply to me either, since mine was started anyway. Tag: Windows explorer 7 freezing up Tag: 289004

Network Traffic Log
Is there any software out there (or in Windows XP SP2 Home Edition)
that I can use to log traffic on a home network, including all
wireless traffic amongst 4 computers (one of which is a Mac laptop), a
printer, and a wireless basestation? I am only interested in looking
at the traffic on the home network controlled by the wireless router.
I am interested in knowing which computer/device is initiating
communication on my home network but from the logs I have access to, I
only seem to see those log entries associated with initialization of a
device. These logs are located within the Norton Securiry Software I
have installed on three of the four computers. thanks.

(Windows XP). And all other computers in this LAN now accessing internet.
My question is that ... we need only a few computers can access Internet
while maintaining this LAN ( All Computers can communicate locally but few
computers can access Internet) Tag: Windows explorer 7 freezing up Tag: 288985
Timing out a client side deviceless connection
Can anyone tell me if there is a way to time out a deviceless connection on
the client side?
I understand that the server side will timeout after a default of 15
minutes, but this does not help me. I don't need the deviceless connection to
persist during the users logon session on the client side. I need it to
timeout to force the user to authenticate again, because the next connection
could possibly be a different user.
The PC is a domain member and is auto-logged on to a local generic account
on the PC and not to a domain account. This is necessary because this is a
multi-user PC for our hospitals surgery department with one single LOB
application loaded that connects back to the server with it's own user
management.
This application is used to chart surgical cases that may last longer than
the nurses shift, so someone else comes in and continues charting the case.
The software is on the PC (instead of a terminal server session) because if
for some reason the PC losses connection to the server, the case charting
software continues charting in local cached mode and will upload the
information when the server becomes available again, thus the charting
software must always be available during the case.
But there are times where the user needs to connect to domain resources. So,
our IT surgical support person has placed shorcuts to the necessary resources
on the "All Users" desktop of the 11 operating room PC's that we have (as
opposed to creating the shortcuts on each of the 70 support staffs desktops
in their profiles and any new users that come along)
What I need to happen is an authentication request to take place each time
the resource is opened up. This happens with the first connection attempt
because the account performing the connection is not a domain member and an
authentication request takes place.
The user will login with his own username and password which provides us
with accountability (instead of the PC being logged on with a generic domain
account with access to the resources). But once the user closes the resource,
subsequent connection attempts occur under the last successfully
authenticated user, even though their shift may have ended hours ago and the
PC's logon session is still ongoing for another person who has come along to
continue charting the surgical case.
If you go to disconnect network drives, you see a deviceless connection that
you can disconnect and this will force an authentication the next time the
resource is accessed.
How can I have this connection either locally disconnect after a length of
time (as opposed to the server disconnecting after the default 15 minutes and
still leaving the deviceless connection on the client side), or prevent the
logon credentials from being cached (via the client side deviceless
connection) for that connection so when the resource is closed, new
connections must authenticate again?
If this cannot be done via XP, can it be done in Vista?

response time (for failure) is slow when accessing share and computer
if I double click a network share
e.g. "My Network Places" dirblah on GREYCOMP
and GREYCOMP is off.
It takes ages to realise it.. The window even crashes with a "not
responding"..
(same if I have a mapped drive to the network share and double click
that)
And if I double click it again, it does the same s-l-o-w- response
again, not just a slow response, but windows looks unhealthy at the
time. I can't click .any icon within the "My Network Places" after I
have clicked a share where the remote computer where the share is, is
off. (it is acting as if there is great cpu or ram utilization,
though I don't think there is, but it's not a nice symptom).
Is there a way to make it timeout quicker ?
Yes, it should fail and give an error, but quicker. And pref without
the bad behaviour. Tag: Windows explorer 7 freezing up Tag: 288977

Best thing to do is to re-install.
or make sure its' not beta version that you are using
or your service pack may not be compatible make sure you're upto date.
